Ford was always stronger on fleet sales. Trucks that are used to destruction in four or five years. I would bet that for private users sales were similar. Not defending or attacking either Ford or Chevy
Thank the EPA and the government's constant push for efficiency. Styles and generations of cars and trucks are considered obsolete way before their time. This is nothing new, though. That's why so many different manufacturers make cars that look relatively similar. How many cars and SUVs on the road right now look like brothers or sisters yet come from entirely different vehicle manufacturers and have designers in different parts of the world?
I couldn’t agree more. I’ve owned my ‘95 Z71 for over ten years and it’s been the most reliable vehicle I’ve ever owned. Cheap parts, easy to work on, still looks like a new truck, and (living in Washington state) not a bit of rust. It still tows my 24’ travel trailer and family of five around without a complaint. I’m sold!
yeah but thats 3 years newer then my 95 and guess what the damn problem is the fucking engine mounts rust way to easy for something on the raod my engine mouts are fucked in my 95 and me replacing them is gonna be an issue as i make 40 a month
My 95 GMC 1500 i bought for $900 i love the body style. Issue transmission 4l60e i tell people do not buy use transmission you will be sorry. Not with the 95 TBI then if you one of these trucks you will have to deal with PWM. Cause 95 is year by its self cause transmission lockup issues.
@@DanielJaegerFilms good video, great truck. You are a Ford guy you say?? RUclips Deboss garage why not Ford.. RUclips Car Wizard worse engine ever.. I have a 2014 Silverado, I off road the crap out of it and hot rod it all of the time!! I have 91,000 trouble free miles and get 23.6 MPG! Hauling two quad's I average 19 MPG. So far so good... I know people with Ford's that never off road them and have had more problems then I have had with my old 252,000 mile Zr2!!
PhillLsx Ga. I have a 2000 Silverado with 205,000 miles on it and it doesn’t even feel worn out at all. All of the steering components on it are stock but it’s still tight as hell and there is no play in the steering wheel. I would have thought that it would have become a problem over the years but so far nothing bad has happened but it makes me concerned almost like it’s too good to be true. lol
Replacing the outside door handle scared the hell out of me because I did it wrong and could not get the door open from the outside or the inside!!! Be very careful if you haven't done this repair before...
kcotte59 because if you haven't beaten her by now, then, there must be something settling you down man. Aaaand, judging by the comment, maybe you should give it serious thought. Life is too short to be in a situation like that. I'm personally glad I didn't stick with that bitch. I tell ya, the one I had would bitch about the color of money. Now I have a simply awesome woman, who wouldn't give a shit if I drug the rustiest truck home to fix. So long as I enjoy wrenching on it, that's all that matters to her. Shit, she'll hear me getting wound up, n bring me my bag n bowl
kcotte59 props to you for not taking it as bragging. I don't usually do that, but, I had to use my sweetheart as an example. I just feel there's more to life than money etc. Yeah, there's gotta be something somewhere, bc, a normal woman would appreciate a man that ain't afraid of a load of laundry or dishes. Alot of people call me cold bc I refuse to deal with a cocky, conceited woman. My advice, take it as you will, bc I am not there in person, but, you gotta scrape up the self respect you have left, make a few calls, n enjoy life while you can.
Ahh have you seen 90s-00s Chevy interiors feels and looks like old Lego plastic I like the way they look but the quality sucks my brother had a 2003 Chevy suburban the seats feel great the door panels are a little squeaky when you lean on it but the dash is so cheaply put together cheap hollow plastic at the top its horrible
I paid $1,800 for my '94 C1500 with a 5.7L V8, 213,000 miles when I got it. Had to replace the battery and I'll be getting new brake pads soon but that's about it. It's doing pretty well so far but I've not been able to drive it a whole lot on account that it has no plates yet, and the whole Corona thing is delaying that for me XD
Bought a running driving 98 k1500 Cheyenne, 5.7 extended cab. 800$ cut the drums out so only front brakes 230k miles and that thing won’t quit. Badass truck outruns a 2002 5.4. Mine has the 4 on the floor
One of my work passenger vans with a 350 blew an oil cooler line on the highway. Even with losing 3-4 quarts of oil because the driver drove it to the nearest gas station and did not stop when the oil pressure light came on the engine survived.
Dudes right I have a 94 Chevy 1500 with a 5.7 in it and it currently has 387,000 original miles on it and still runs and drives great every day to work can't believe it every day it's that high miles and still runs great bought the truck at 260 thousand miles and have only put a water pump an new gas line patched and that's it I'm amazed I believe these are the best motors and trucks I've ever saw !
96 chevy k1500 extra cab cab with 159,000 getting a little rust around windshield and radio antenna on front bumper. Replaced the manifold gasket, alternator, 3 fuel pumps, brake job twice, rebuild front end, two windshields, 4 sets of tires, two batteries, 2 brake lines that rusted out, two tailgate handles, 3 door handles inside, one door handle outside, one radiator, am going to put new shocks all around now. Owned this truck for for twenty yrs and love it like the body style and the motor has a 3" lift from when bought new in 96.
Logan Mayo The Vortecs had weak oil pumps that would fail also prone to sludge. I’ve seen many TBI 350’s with over 400K miles. They were the best engines.
I'm a Ford guy too. Bought an '89 Silverado K1500 three years ago. I'm loving it. Mine is absolutely rust-free, believe it or not. Had about 98K on it when I bought it. Had a leaky oil filter adapter that the seller thought was a rear main seal. Fixed that in ten minutes. New exhaust system. Good to go. Drove it. Had to replace starter and battery. Oil changes. That's it so far. Oh yeah -- upgraded the 4X4 actuator to the motor-driven variety. It's a great truck. Paid 3K for it. Think I'll keep it for awhile.
Yeah thanks for posting I love these trucks I have a 94 K 1500 Z71 I bought brand-new I'm in Arizona so I have no rust it's never been in an accident original engine and transmission, I'm looking at 500,000 Miles right now runs like a dream I love it.
1996 GMC Sierra 1500 20 plus years and 200,000 plus miles. 1/2 ton hauled a ton of wood pellets numerous times not to mention tons of wood and Sheetrock. My truck is a workhorse and would not trade it for any other vehicle. Replaced the water pump and starter that’s it in 20 + years! Battery’s and tires too!
I did not have good motors during those years. I replaced blower motors and windshield wiper motors in so many it's not even funny. However the engines are rock solid.
Chaka Gillis your right my blower motor doesn't work on my truck and my wiper motor acts up it will stop my wiper blades in the middle of my windshield or they won't shut off
+Dillon Koch lol i kept a rubber mallet in my 93 silverado. when the blower motor or windshield wiper motor would stop, i would tap on them and worked good as new lol
i paid 1,700$ to get trans rebuilt on my 92 astro work van... friends thought i was crazy..super reliable andi can easily get another 50k out of it.frame and body still good. ..new van payments would be 400-500$ a month.
kcotte59 HAHAHA the 5.4 Triton? More reliable? Put the crack pipe down bud! The Triton is one of the worst engines Ford has put out in the last 30+ years.
I have a '91 with the 5.7L and almost 300k on it. The only gripe I have is the low towing capacity. I live in Colorado and it has a 5000 pound towing capacity. you pull 5000 through the mountains you're gonna get in a lot of people's way. It just has no get up and go with that kinda weight in the thinner air. Other than that it's a great reliable truck.
no the 73-86 Chevy's were junk they were carbureted instead of EFI . They had bullshit small sadle tanks one on each side real pain in the ass. Not to mention the 4x4s had solid front axels god do I hate solid front axle trucks. IFS is so much better in every way and I don't have to get out to lock out my bullshit hubs I just push a button sip on my coffee and carry on my way and dont have to worry about spilling my coffee with IFS vs hillbilly junk solid bullshit front axle trucks.
+Special Ed The 88+ Chevy so call cowboy Cadillacs are so much more reliable then 87 and older Chevy's. Not only the 88+ Chevy's way way way more reliable they ride way nicer they come factory with fuel injection and so much more. I have had my day with them 73-87 Chevy's what a bunch of junk. Fucking carburators we're always needing attention. Most had crappy TH350 and TH400 3spd non overdrive crap transmissions. The fuel tank switch was always a problem they came factory gutless as all hell. The solid front axe 4x4s required you to get out to lock out them stupid hubs not to mention them old solid axle Chevy's ride like crap and handle like crap. The list goes on I work a full-time job I don't feel like spending all my spare time working on a piece of shit truck. I just sold my 94 Silverado with over 400 000 most of the truck was all original including the 5.7TBI and 4l60e everything worked as GM intended including the air conditioning I'v upgraded to a 98 Z71 Silverado. Don't miss my 85 Silverado at all fuck that old carbureted piece of shit. That 85 I had was always a prick in the -40c mornings that 94 I had I'd just push a button and in my nice warm house.
My dad owns 2 with almost 300k miles each. The automatic transmissions lasted about 240k - 250k miles but that amazing considering how cheap they are to replace.
There are plenty of things to talk down about this truck any real Chevy guy will tell you everything that’s wrong with them If you care to know I’ll tell you
Totally agree with him on these trucks! I have a 98 5.7 z71. No rust on my truck though, used fluid film in the cab corners and rockers every year. 100$ a year can go a LONG way.
My dad has the same year z71, no rust except for a small spot on the rockers on the driver side door. Been an ohio truck since it sold off the lot in 98. We got it in 2004.
I've a '95 GMC K1500. One of the best vehicles I've ever owned. It turns heads anywhere I take it. Best of all, it gets me home no matter the terrain I need to go through to get there.
Friend of mine had this same truck and he got almost 400k on it before the body was just rotted out. Damn New England winters. It was a nice truck that asked for minimal work.
I have a '94 Silverado, standard cab, long bed, 2 wheel drive. Closing in on 300k miles and NO RUST! It is a north Georgia truck where we don't have much issues with saltwater air or winter salting on the roads. I've had it almost 25 years and still running strong. Hell, this truck has given me fewer problems than most of my kids!!!
Naa not in Florida they aren't. I see more of these trucks still tooling around on the road then I do the old round body F-150's or big rig Ram's. I bought my old worn out work truck 8 years ago for $1500 expecting to drive it a couple years then scrap it out... Ended up fully restoring it the truck was so AWESOME mechanically!
Up here in the North country every rig Rots out unless you undercoat it every year twice a year so I agree those were the best bang for your buck anything with the 350 Chevy motor is Bulletproof
You’re dead on the money. We bought a 1999 suburban in April for 3500.00. Once I fixed everything including cosmetics we had about $5000 into it. It looks beautiful. Within 3 hours of owning it before upgrades I had three people wanting to buy it. I was up to six in two days!
I drive a 94 chevy 1500 with only 143,000 miles. This truck has been abused but somehow to this day still runs. It blows my mind. Someone actually put diesel in the tank on accident and the engine just ran straight through it
im a ford and chevy guy these silverados are along the same line in terms of reliability as the 97-03 f150. 97 and 98 f150s did have an issue with timing cover gaskets and intake gaskets but it was solved in 99. id say tho the f150 does squeak out a win because of the 4r70w transmission is more reliable then 4l60. its retarded how cool these guys think they are with there brand new $50 000 f150s and silverados when a 4 door car would suit them much better laughs
Interesting. I have a 2016 Silverado. Drove it off the lot with 9 miles. Now has 25,000 miles. And the bed and bed rails are all scratched, dented, and well broken in (and yes, the liner is sprayed). I also have a tool box bolted right through the bed rails. And I've towed cars, lumber, lawn equipment, snow equipment, ladders, etc. I've loaded my bed with soil, mulch, tree limbs, and plants. And I'm not afraid to push a snow bank out of my way to pull into my driveway. I'm also not afraid to get it dirty or muddy, but still wash it once every month or so, and polish, wax and seal the paint twice a year. This was after I traded my 2003 with 262,000 miles in excellent condition. And I pushed that truck to the limit as well. Oh yeah. And I paid only $32K for mine after hours of negotiating. And my '03 was $26K brand new. So I think I did well. So don't worry, there's still dudes out there that use their trucks as trucks. And I'm one of them. However, there are tons of dudes that shouldn't have a truck because they don't use them as trucks. Know who they are? The ones with the hydraulic tonneau covers. Because any truck guys knows those things are a waste of time when trying to load the bed.
Your right, I got a black 97 Z71 no rust 6 inch suspension lift 3 inch body lift 35's on it I put a 1992 14 bolt semi float rear end under it with a shackle flip kit. Love these body styles.
Steve's Auto OSTROGOTH same here got a 94 Blazer 299.5 k on the clock, 5.7 tbi and 14 bolt semi float out back from a 95 k1500 3/4 ton bolted right it on 6 inch lift and 35s most reliable truck ive ever owned.
I have a 1993 WT/1500 with the 4.3. it has 280,000 miles never been rebuilt and still gets an average of 24 MPG. I've had it for over 15 years and it has only left me on the side of the road once when a body to frame ground strap broke on me. I just clamped a jumper cable to the battery to the frame and it fired up and I drove it the last 13miles home from work. The only mods on the Truck I did was Added Duel Stainless Exhaust, Mallory Coil, Removed the Clutch Fan and put on an Electric fan that kicks on at 220F and off at 180F and put a 160*F Thermostat in it. I also upgrade the brakes to Z-rated brakes for more stopping power. Only did that because the price difference was only about $100 difference from stock. I'll keep this truck until it don't run any more. I've had people ask me when I'm going to get a new truck. I tell them If I have to put even $500 a year into this truck ( Witch is very rare ) It's still cheaper then new truck Payments and the Increase in Insurance. Great Truck. Take Care of it and It will definitely take care of you.
By far one of the best and most informative videos on this truck. I've been searching RUclips for awhile looking for a decent video and I'm glad I've finally found one. I'm going to be picking up one of these up next week as my first car and I couldn't be more excited. Thanks!
Look ItsRain I agree with you, my 03 silverado has lots more rust, but it has been beat on and has been driven in the harsh Wisconsin winters with lots of salt, but still, my rocker panels are completely gone compared to this truck in the video. But I don’t really care how something looks, I mostly care how mechanically sound and reliable it is, and these trucks absolutely meet my expectations👍
My 02 Yukon XL with the 5.3 is amazing. Was bought new and lived its entire life in Southern California, there is little to no rust on it. Extremely reliable
You were spot on on all the details of these trucks. I love mine I’m so glad that I finally got another one a couple of months ago. I plan on keeping this one running it’s my 97 GMC StepSide extended cab Z 71 off-road. It’s got 213,000 miles on it in the most impressive thing on this truck when I first test drove it, was how strong the drivetrain felt. I am very fortunate as I do not have any oil leaks and any leaks at all. Which tells me this one was taken care of.And for $1600 I feel like my money went far
All of these reasons is why I wouldn't sell my 06 Silverado for anything else on the road nowadays, I would still have it as my daily driver even if it broke 200k. And as far as rust issues go, thank god mine doesn't get any (primarily because it lives its life in south Texas).
kcotte59 kcotte59 my 02 3/4ton has the 8.1 with 454000 original miles and still going strong..which is the same body style as an 06 just a different front clip.
Can't say anything about the '06s but the guys that I sold my old '03 has over 300,000 miles with the original motor and trans. Even the original G80 3.73 rear still works. Really miss that truck. I love my '16 but that '03 didn't owe me a dime.
kcotte59 Mine is 2006 never any problems and I mud run burnouts beat the fuck out of it still run and drives like a top. I'm sorry your luck is bad with them
Have a 90 c1500 been my daily driver for the last 17 years I have done a lot of maintenance to it . But that's to be expected for a 27 year old truck no rust here on the southern trucks! Straight up awesome trucks
I have a 1989 Silverado ....I bought it brand new after I graduate from a technical college and started working .......I drove it everyday until I parked it in 2004 (bought a new 2004 Silverado) .....the V-8 350 is a great and strong engine with 288,789 miles on it .....only issue was the alternator, fuel pump , and paint ....I'm in the business of Auto Collision repair , so I've done 2 complete paint jobs on it throughout the years (changed the fleet side box to a step side box)......other than that great truck .......no rust , no engine trouble .......A/C works perfect ...
The 88-98 c/k (GMT400 platform) are by far my favorite trucks of all time. I have owned several of them and I am happy to say that I recently bought another one this year. They are rocksolid and fun to drive the only thing that I would mention is make sure that you keep an eye on the oil and transmission fluids as they are prone to leaking from the pans so as long as you keep them full of fluid they’ll keep running. Get one from AZ, or southern NV as they usually have little to no rust. There are so many aftermarket parts and modifications to make the truck exactly how you want it.
No reason to buy a new vehicle if you just maintain the damn thing. People don't maintain anything and it just rots away to the point its completely worthless and the only ones that want it are junkyards
My biggest issue with this body style was always the cheap interiors. That and there always seems to be issues with the door latches and tailgate latches. But I agree that they are good looking trucks and mechanically they are very reliable.
Bought my 1994 Silverado used in 1998, with 78k miles on it. Still driving it nearly 22 years now with over 335k on the original engine. Had to have trans rebuilt about 5 years ago. Love my Chevy Truck! Get lots of people wanting to buy it from me. Have a hard time letting it go.
I absolutely love these trucks!!! I've literally owned at least 20 of them. Many I have seen sitting in someone's back yard and buy it for a few hundred bucks, put a battery, fresh gas, maybe a starter or alternator and get them running and either drive it for a while or sell it and make some extra cash. The body style is very desirable and the drive train is the best ever out of the light duty trucks. I have a 99 Tahoe 90s body style I bought from a old guy for $2000, 180k on it and zero rust and it runs like new. I work for a Chevy dealership and could drive a brand new Silverado if I wanted but NO...I'll save the money per month and drive my Tahoe for pennies a month in comparison. Love the video btw!!!!
Being a Ford guy...I ended up with a 96 Silverado I bought for my 16 year old sons first truck. I love the old truck so much...that I've started to restore it.
I just bought a 97 C1500 stepside with a 350 engine. It rides very good. Overall it looks very nice. Here and there some paint tapped spots. But found no rust or any damage. Its getting inspected to be on the road since it got its LPG system removed and gets on Dutch license plate. It will be done in a few weeks and cant wait!
What is a private sale? How much was asked, and how much did you end up actually paying? I am trying to buy an older truck, but everyone wants 833 million for their 265k mile rust bucket.
I bought through a garage/dealer of 2nd hand cars specialized in American cars. I paid about €9500 for the truck and €11k including removal of LPG system, putting on name etc. Cant compare those prices here with America since its a rarity here 😂 Ps she had about 155k miles when I bought the truck
Great video! I own a 1994 C1500. Mine is a sportside extended cab with a 305. I bought it for $2500.00 dollars last year. I bought it from a gentleman I work with. I had a 2008 Avalanche and could not afford it but I do not regret getting rid of it as I am happier with my 94. Mine has 171,000 miles and no rust. It does need a paint job and I plan on painting it some day. It drives as good as my newer truck did and uses less oil. These trucks are very popular and I even get compliments on mine every now and then. The 305 has enough power for what I need. I enjoyed your video.
I've had 4 of these OBS trucks. Theyre great. They tend to need a little work here and there but if you keep up with the maintenance they can go 300k miles or more. Its all about the owners of the vehicle. These trucks started at decent price points and everyone bought em. But not everyone took care of em.
Oh, man, you are killing me here! 🤕 I used to love the latest tech; now I hate it. I miss roll up windows and non-electric keys. I am trying to find an older truck. I have a budget of about $2,500, which is not much during anytime, but especially during Bidenitis/"not inflation." Do you have any suggestions? I am also fearful of buying vehicles with timing belts. So expensive to replace.
Got rid of a TBI 95 with 275K on it, but still running strong to pick up a 97 (Vortec) Silverado that is in much better shape with 162K on it...no rust, beautiful interior. I've been loving it! Will drive for many years to come. Love these trucks!
We have a '98 Chevy 1500 4x4 Suburban with 206000 miles on it and a '99 GMC 2wd 1500 pickup with 301000 miles on it. Both have been very reliable and we plan on hanging on to both for the foreseeable future!
Im from Cali so when i moved to the midwest i was astonished of the amount of rust trucks have. I was okay with sundamage but wow some tailbeds were just falling off
Are they still rust buckets if you're not in the rust belt? My husband's doesn't have a spec of rust he doesn't baby it but doesn't abuse it, it has over 300k on the original drive train. ...
That's a good write-up and video. I learned how to drive in a 96 Suburban (in 2003), my parents still have that truck (2 transmissions and 1 engine later). My daily is an 03 Silverado 5.3. I tow a small hard-side camper. Though it's only about 3,500lbs, it's a parachute. The 5.7 Vortec has so much more towing power than my newer 5.3. Chevy still knows how to make simple, easy to maintain and repair, trucks. Fords and Dodges are too complicated and love to bury half the engine under the firewall. My biggest gripe about the GMT400s are the damn interior. No bottom bolsters on the seats and a very low window line at the door panel. I drive with one arm on the door and this is NOT the must comfortable truck to do that. I'd rather have the interior of the GMT600, but the drivetrain of the GMT400. Now THAT'S a damn good truck.
Love my 92 K1500 5.7. 140k miles. Pushing 30 years old I'm only replacing parts due to age and rust issues. Got to love Nebraska. I get more compliments on thos truck than I did my 07 Votec Max with 6in lift, 35 in Mickey thompsons, 20 in rims. Murdered out. Love the 90s trucks. So cheap and easy to work on.
One of the best real life videos on these trucks. Similar to my videos only this guy takes his time explaining the process of having a truck worth something... Good video dude..
Nathan Springer it's worth every penny you've invested too. I've had my 92 stepside for 10 years. I wouldn't take 5 grand for mine, and I paid 3 grand for it 10 years ago.
I have to say I paid $5,500 for my 1999 Silverado...5.3 v8 and it's a best one of the smoothest riding trucks I've ever owned....I dropped about $700 in cosmetics for my pleasure only..other then that...I'll never get rid of it....
Chris Simmons All of the stock shocks on my 2000 are blown out, but now it rides like a couch because of it and I kind of like it. lol I plan to turn it into a long travel build sometime but for now it’s completely bone stock and it’s been great. I paid $4,800 for mine. Came with 160,000 miles on it, now it has around 205,000. It seriously drives like a sedan it’s so smooth.
+1 on most everything in this video. I'd love to pick up one of those pickups again in good shape someday. I like TFL Truck, but they're quite inexperienced when it comes to anything under the hood or mechanical. They're....well, simply put, they're journalists, not mechanics. I've worked on my share of Ford and GM vehicles and GM is almost always a heck of a lot easier to work on than Ford. Case in point; it took me 2 solid evening just to replace the spark plugs on my F-250 because the idiot engineers decided to put the plugs under the coil packs, which are directly under the fuel rail, which is under the intake, which is literally under the windshield despite having a 4 foot long hood! On a GM pickup, plugs are a ~30 min job if you don't break anything.
Bought mine a few months ago for $1,300 with the cab corners redone and frame in excellent condition. Body has 106k miles on it but engine is unknown. Wasn’t running when we bought it but a few oxygen sensors later and it ran pretty well. My uncles got a 94 turbo diesel with 320k miles on it and it’s still pulling strong, love these trucks.
I have a 1991 Silverado Z71 stepside, still running smooth. I've had it for 13 years, worse thing I had to do was the transmission but that is with 230,000ish miles. love it.
We have a 95 non vortec it pulled two full size ATVs and a big boat the engine started getting problems at 400,000 miles could have fix it but decided to put in a 383 stroker instead.
I have a 95 c2500 I just got and it is surprisingly clean especially when compared to the fords and dodges that are the same vintage and even newer trucks, the old 350 TBI and 4L80E trans are almost flawless
I owned a boat yard in the 1990's, I had 1990 Chevy 1500 Silverado 4x4 with the 6 foot short bed with a horsepower rating of 190 if I remember correctly. We were new to the business and the truck was to say the least not comparable to heavier duty trucks that other people were using in the business. That being said, the truck never broke down and was dead reliable. Brakes had to be changed every six months due to heavy towing and quite often towed our largest boat and best seller which weighed 9500 plus the trailer which was another few thousand pounds. This truck was pushed to all limits. Six years later after getting out of the business the transmission and rear differential had to be rebuilt and I couldn't believe both lasted that long.. At a price tag of $16,000 dollars at the time this truck paid for itself many times over and was sold for $6000. Both Chevy and Ford made these trucks aerodynamic looking; I am no engineer but I don't understand why today they have these gigantic boxed shaped front ends. I wish the styling today was a little more reminiscent of the trucks from the 1990's and of course with modern day touches.
I think the engines are solid but the factory injection spider can be failure prone and the 4L60E transmissions had a number of weaknesses. Most of the ones I was looking at a few years back with fairly low mileage already had the trans. rebuilt.
I have an 08 Silverado and has the 4L60E Trans in it. Going on 225,000 and still not touched. A good majority of these trans failures comes as a result of poor servicing. Depending on how much you do with them, 60,000 is the norm for fluid and filter changing. The more you haul and tow the sooner you have to service them. They will last but most did not maintain them properly.
actually its a well known fact that the parts inside the 4l60e are just not built strong. i cant count how many people have had to replace there trans at only 200 000kms not miles but kms. ive seen some go for as long as 250 000 miles but very rare and you have to baby it. there are much stronger components that people usually use when they rebuild them to address there problems. ive got over 220 000 miles on my 03 f150 trans and everything on the drivetrain is still all origional and going strong. 2 valve tritons are great engines only got to watch for the 5.4 and make sure you reef down your sparkplugs good. should overtorque them on all engine sizes though to be safe.
The 4L60E's have a few well known common failure points like the sun shell, the accumulators, and TCC. This is fairly well known and most of these mechanical problems date back to the older non-computer controlled version of these trans., the 700R4's.
can attest, 97 K1500 with 250,000 miles. love this truck. Easy to work on and plenty of aftermarket and OEM parts. CA no rust either. Great vid keep it up OP.
Bought a 93 K1500 11 months ago. Needed a lot of work but I knew I could make it into what I want. Completely rebuilt engine into a cammed Vortec 353 with edelbrock dual plane intake and bored custom throttle body with 18lb regulator spring. My transmission guy is rebuilding tranny now to handle the engine. Pretty sure its cranking 300hp/400tq now (conservative estimate). I also tore out the entire interior except the wiring and steering column. New dash, headliner, vinyl floor, door panels, and 40-20-40 front seats with center console. Changed interior color from tan to black. Also put in a sweet instrument cluster from Dakota Digital, the VHX series. Only major things left to do are AC conversion (new evap core is already in), front suspension refresh, new wheels/tires, new paint.
Just replace intake gaskets with upgraded metal ones. Replace injectors to upgraded BWD setup. It eliminates the poppet nozzles and places injectors directly at intake port. I replaced my about 7yrs ago (80-90k miles) I haven't had a problem with either one.
Great solid trucks. I am sold on the quality assurance GM had built into their trucks of this era. I'm also in Washington State. Did not find a bit of rust on my trucks. very reliable and still on the road at 330,000+ miles with no rebuild in sight.
Down here in Texas these trucks are not rusted😂
Jon Snow100 must be nice 🤣🤣
I agree unless your in South Texas near the ocean.
Lol shit bubba what rust? Lol 96 Z71 350 and she’s a mean bitch, more than my baby momma lol 😂😭🔥
he's probably i n the north part of missouri my 1990 SLX had no rust and im from missouri
Rather have a rusted truck than live in Tex-Ass
If the F-150 out sold Chevy in the mid 90s to early 00s, why do we see 10 chevys of this era on the road for every 1 Ford?
True that
Because the Fords are all in junkyards
Ford was always stronger on fleet sales. Trucks that are used to destruction in four or five years. I would bet that for private users sales were similar. Not defending or attacking either Ford or Chevy
I wish I can push the like button x10
You mean every brand new ford
I wish chevy trucks were still like this.
They are still pretty good. The 5.3 is a great engine
Matthew Tyler yes my dad has a new one and I'll be honest, it is a great truck. I still like the old ones better but the new ones are good too.
THE SQUAD 2. Me too bud
My 2008 Silverado has 300k original motor and transmission.
Just bought one last week. Nearly rust free( surface rust on roof) no rocker rust. 122,000 miles 5.7 clear coat peeling $1600.
They are bad about roof rust normally
392,000 still going strong
That’s impressive. Gas or diesel?
1996 z71, 285,000 here.
@John Waters,You're more of an ISUZU mini truck kinda guy.
320,000 here and original engine
Mine just hit 307,000. I have the ‘99 Z71. She runs smooth
I’m sold!
Dad bought a blue and white 73 c20 loved that truck
Nice video and great truck! Glad to see you showing some love to these beasts
Oh my goodness, you guys DID watch my video! Thanks for the comment!!!
yeah but thats 3 years newer then my 95 and guess what the damn problem is the fucking engine mounts rust way to easy for something on the raod my engine mouts are fucked in my 95 and me replacing them is gonna be an issue as i make 40 a month
I would have thought that it would have become a problem over the years but so far nothing bad has happened but it makes me concerned almost like it’s too good to be true. lol
just make sure you keep a few door handles on hand. you will need em
Replacing the outside door handle scared the hell out of me because I did it wrong and could not get the door open from the outside or the inside!!! Be very careful if you haven't done this repair before...
kcotte59 time for a divorce. I spent 12 years with a chick who was always right. Beer and weed are far more expensive than a divorce
Yep I got a 95 C 2500 standard GMC driver side inner door handle is a 14 mm long socket lol
kcotte59 because if you haven't beaten her by now, then, there must be something settling you down man.
“Why 90’s Silverado’s are great trucks.”
Because that’s back when GM cared.
Craezo king Beats and tell me how that affects the reliability
@@benjamingarcia2282 it's reliable but it's a bit overkill to say they cared
...and didnt use carpeted wheel well liners
@@superunknown8645 lol
I paid $1400 for mine, with a quarter of a million miles on it, it still runs great, it's in great condition, it's a 1994
I have a 1994 Chevy Silverado 2500 V8 5.7 engine. Only 168,000 miles on it. Hoping to last a lot longer.
Yea you have the TBI engine they are the best. Want to sell it?
I paid $1,800 for my '94 C1500 with a 5.7L V8, 213,000 miles when I got it. Had to replace the battery and I'll be getting new brake pads soon but that's about it. It's doing pretty well so far but I've not been able to drive it a whole lot on account that it has no plates yet, and the whole Corona thing is delaying that for me XD
I paid $600 for mine lol been a project for 2 years mine is a 1991
Bought a running driving 98 k1500 Cheyenne, 5.7 extended cab. 800$ cut the drums out so only front brakes 230k miles and that thing won’t quit. Badass truck outruns a 2002 5.4. Mine has the 4 on the floor
You can't kill the Chevy 350 V-8. Those engines are almost bullet proof!
Viperman200221 yup still my favorite block
One of my work passenger vans with a 350 blew an oil cooler line on the highway. Even with losing 3-4 quarts of oil because the driver drove it to the nearest gas station and did not stop when the oil pressure light came on the engine survived.
Viperman200221 same thing with the GM 3800 V6 I have that engine in my Buick then those engines will go forever too
Viperman200221 yeah I drove my 99 yukon with both heads cracked for a few years lol
350’s are damn good engines, but I would put my money on a 5.3 lasting longer than a 350.
Tyler Webb
I have a 1992 C1500 4.3 and five speed with almost 390K miles.
I have the same truck. 94 Chevy k1500 with a 5.7.
Yeah you got the tbi motor, it will last longer than the truck. I personally don’t like the vortec 5.7
Logan Mayo
The Vortecs had weak oil pumps that would fail also prone to sludge.
That body will be gone before that vortec motor gives out.
LibertyFighter thats the way it is with all the pick up trucks in my area
I did not have good motors during those years. I replaced blower motors and windshield wiper motors in so many it's not even funny. However the engines are rock solid.
Chaka Gillis your right my blower motor doesn't work on my truck and my wiper motor acts up it will stop my wiper blades in the middle of my windshield or they won't shut off
Yepppp
+Dillon Koch lol i kept a rubber mallet in my 93 silverado. when the blower motor or windshield wiper motor would stop, i would tap on them and worked good as new lol
Chevy siverardo year models 88 to 98 were fantastic trucks
i paid 1,700$ to get trans rebuilt on my 92 astro work van... friends thought i was crazy..super reliable andi can easily get another 50k out of it.frame and body still good. ..new van payments would be 400-500$ a month.
kcotte59 my 99 has a 5.3 with 223 thousand mile, everything og
kcotte59 HAHAHA the 5.4 Triton? More reliable? Put the crack pipe down bud! The Triton is one of the worst engines Ford has put out in the last 30+ years.
the 2 valve tritons were decent ..i had a couple.. the 3v is a disaster.
The older ‘73-‘87 square body Chevy’s, now those were a great truck.
no the 73-86 Chevy's were junk they were carbureted instead of EFI .
Tyler Tyler I prefer any Chevy truck up to 1989, you can have the newer cowboy Cadillacs.
Yea. I love the 70s Chevy trucks, blazers and suburbans.
I had a 77 Chevy custom deluxe it was a great truck it had 500000 miles on it and still worked
My favorite body style of any chevy truck. Sexy and reliable
My dad owns 2 with almost 300k miles each. The automatic transmissions lasted about 240k - 250k miles but that amazing considering how cheap they are to replace.
I agree but the late 70s to mid 80s square body was to me the sharpest looking
@@dericcormier38 i have a 79 silverado they are sharp lol
I like the 06's
07-13 is my favorite generation
We have 1997 2500 with the 7.8l V8. It's amazing. 200k miles and zero rust. Amazing. Get offers to buy it all the time at gas stations!
Anyone who talks down on these trucks has no idea what they are talking about.
zepfan96 you were born in 1996?
There are plenty of things to talk down about this truck
any real Chevy guy will tell you everything that’s wrong with them
If you care to know I’ll tell you
Doors are too heavy for the hinges .
zepfan96 exacty
Leaky intake manifold gaskets, heater hose nipple that breaks, ball joints that drop, spider fuel injection hoses that clog and it goes on and on.
This is your BEST consumer advice Ever. Well done Daniel.
Outt Ink what is fluid film?
Mr.Clem it's a rust preventative fluid
Yeah, its almost like wd40 but THICK. It sticks on your frame, or pretty much anything you spray it on.
My 96 is comoletely rust free. But then again, I'm from Louisiana haha no salt here
97 Silverado right here. 301km, never had the heads off.
Thats what I'm talking about
I've a '95 GMC K1500. One of the best vehicles I've ever owned. It turns heads anywhere I take it. Best of all, it gets me home no matter the terrain I need to go through to get there.
i always love that generation of GM trucks even troughout my youth,
Without the rust that's more than a $5k truck in the south.
If it's in decent shape and doesn't have crazy high miles it very well could be.
Fb market place would have it for sale with rust here in texas for 5 to 7k lol.
@@austinreeves9112 my dad and i got a 125000 mile rust free 98 for 300 dollars here in texas. just have to look for the right deal.
People are still asking $8k and $10k in the south.
Here in Mississippi they all over the place without rust.
Haha just got one of those for free!! And looks much better than the one on the video. 0 rust!
These Silverados are way underrated
Naa not in Florida they aren't. I see more of these trucks still tooling around on the road then I do the old round body F-150's or big rig Ram's. I bought my old worn out work truck 8 years ago for $1500 expecting to drive it a couple years then scrap it out... Ended up fully restoring it the truck was so AWESOME mechanically!
There not Silverados there c/k until 2000 then Silverado became the name of the truck
Brindle Chihuahua Had a mid 90’s Z71 and the badge that they GM placed by the rear of the cab says “Silverado”. Same with my brothers 1997 Chevy 3500.
Brindle Chihuahua c/k is how they classified the truck, c for single cab and k for extra cab. Silverado has been the model name for quite a long time.
C stands for 2 wheel drive, K stands for 4 wheel drive
Up here in the North country every rig Rots out unless you undercoat it every year twice a year so I agree those were the best bang for your buck anything with the 350 Chevy motor is Bulletproof
You’re dead on the money. We bought a 1999 suburban in April for 3500.00. Once I fixed everything including cosmetics we had about $5000 into it. It looks beautiful. Within 3 hours of owning it before upgrades I had three people wanting to buy it. I was up to six in two days!
wheelstandr they are gorgeous if they are well kept or restored. And the old ones will not devalue anymore as long as you take care of them.
96 and up with a 350 and manual transfer case....unstoppable.
I had a 97 full size extended cab and that truck was Bullitt proof
I drive a 94 chevy 1500 with only 143,000 miles. This truck has been abused but somehow to this day still runs. It blows my mind. Someone actually put diesel in the tank on accident and the engine just ran straight through it
SGT SCHULTZ 17 I've got a 1994 chevy 1500. single cab. 139k miles. 4x4. runs like a dream. Last owner wasn't nice to it.
kcotte59 it was only around 3-4 gallons of diesel in a 20 gallon tank
SGT SCHULTZ 17 I own a 97 Silverado z71 with 300k & still runs strong
Max Vega without a doubt. Chevy did an amazing job from the years 88-98
I have a 2001 silverado with 13,816 miles on it very low
I am a Ford guy....but yes, love this truck! Love the body style not like new Silverado for old men and dudes who don't want to get them dirty...
im a ford and chevy guy these silverados are along the same line in terms of reliability as the 97-03 f150. 97 and 98 f150s did have an issue with timing cover gaskets and intake gaskets but it was solved in 99. id say tho the f150 does squeak out a win because of the 4r70w transmission is more reliable then 4l60. its retarded how cool these guys think they are with there brand new $50 000 f150s and silverados when a 4 door car would suit them much better laughs
John Wyskochil I’m an every truck guy because just liking one brand and thinking anyone who disagrees with you is stupid is obnoxious.
the new chevys are for guys that want to get their pant antlers jerked off
SurviventheOnslaught Not sure what that means but ok. I'll be sure to run my 2016 close to 300,000 just like my '03. But hey to each their own.
The newer ons with the LS are good too. I have an 06 Yukon With almost 300,000 miles. Looks, and runs great.
BRETT m nice, I love my 02 Yukon xl and I’ve got 330,000 on it and it’s never once stranded
Thanks!
I have to disagree with you on the rust, i see alot more 99-06 trucks rusted out compared to 88-98 trucks.
Look ItsRain heck I saw a newer Colorado with rust
yea the 99-06 rust really bad
Lived in ohio my whole life, but clearly i moved.
Yes that is true
My 02 Yukon XL with the 5.3 is amazing. Was bought new and lived its entire life in Southern California, there is little to no rust on it. Extremely reliable
J Garcia 2001:2006 where the golden years of Yukon
You were spot on on all the details of these trucks. I love mine I’m so glad that I finally got another one a couple of months ago. I plan on keeping this one running it’s my 97 GMC StepSide extended cab Z 71 off-road. It’s got 213,000 miles on it in the most impressive thing on this truck when I first test drove it, was how strong the drivetrain felt. I am very fortunate as I do not have any oil leaks and any leaks at all. Which tells me this one was taken care of.And for $1600 I feel like my money went far
Ex-fiancé’s dad had one of these with 298k on it. Original engine and transmission. Still started up quick and ran like a champ.
All of these reasons is why I wouldn't sell my 06 Silverado for anything else on the road nowadays, I would still have it as my daily driver even if it broke 200k. And as far as rust issues go, thank god mine doesn't get any (primarily because it lives its life in south Texas).
kcotte59 kcotte59 my 02 3/4ton has the 8.1 with 454000 original miles and still going strong..which is the same body style as an 06 just a different front clip.
the 8.1 was good my dad had one that had over 300k on it when he sold it
pulled anything we hooked to it.
I'm sorry your luck is bad with them
Chris Johnston how is that?
My 1995 Silverado is awesome!!!
It’s super awesome
Have a 90 c1500 been my daily driver for the last 17 years I have done a lot of maintenance to it . But that's to be expected for a 27 year old truck no rust here on the southern trucks! Straight up awesome trucks
Patrick Kennedy is gtg few c people n t m
I have a 1989 Silverado ....I bought it brand new after I graduate from a technical college and started working .......I drove it everyday until I parked it in 2004 (bought a new 2004 Silverado) .....the V-8 350 is a great and strong engine with 288,789 miles on it .....only issue was the alternator, fuel pump , and paint ....I'm in the business of Auto Collision repair , so I've done 2 complete paint jobs on it throughout the years (changed the fleet side box to a step side box)......other than that great truck .......no rust , no engine trouble .......A/C works perfect ...
well i would hope there is no rust after repainting it every fer years lol
The 88-98 c/k (GMT400 platform) are by far my favorite trucks of all time. I have owned several of them and I am happy to say that I recently bought another one this year. They are rocksolid and fun to drive the only thing that I would mention is make sure that you keep an eye on the oil and transmission fluids as they are prone to leaking from the pans so as long as you keep them full of fluid they’ll keep running. Get one from AZ, or southern NV as they usually have little to no rust. There are so many aftermarket parts and modifications to make the truck exactly how you want it.
Why do you people say 88-98 when my 99 k1500 is a OBS too
@@Ty-bw9sw I think the 99 is a GMT800, and informally called NBS
@@four-eight-zero5627 Unless it’s a Suburban, then it’s still a GMT400 with the old body style.
been driving my '91 k1500 for for 21 years now. upsets everyone that i'm still driving the same veeeeee-hicle.
No reason to buy a new vehicle if you just maintain the damn thing. People don't maintain anything and it just rots away to the point its completely worthless and the only ones that want it are junkyards
Stick a tesla battery in the bed and some tesla drive modules and call it good!
I had the 91 3500...... great truck !
My dads 95 silverado has 230K miles and runs great! Only problem it had was transmission but fixed it and since then no problems :)
Your dads 95 Silverado’s a great truck dude
My biggest issue with this body style was always the cheap interiors. That and there always seems to be issues with the door latches and tailgate latches. But I agree that they are good looking trucks and mechanically they are very reliable.
I own this very truck. Daily driver, 252k, 70 miles a day, no rust on mine - north texas. Greatest truck I will probably ever own.
Have a 94 k2500 5.7 with 5 speed granny it pulls over 10k lbs no problem and runs amazing with the 201,000 miles it has on it
@Dr_Face_Slapper
Is the 5.7 and tranny on the 1500 the same on the 2500?
@@114wildfire no the nv4500 is only on the HD trucks the nv 3500 is on the 1500s and such
Dr_Face_Slapper
What is your average fuel economy?
Love my 91... Still running strong..😎😎
Chevys strong that’s why
Cant compare those prices here with America since its a rarity here 😂
Ps she had about 155k miles when I bought the truck
@@ek6648 Wow! That is VERY expensive.
@@ek6648 Thank you.
Love these trucks and glad that you're giving everyone else reasons to love them too.
The main reason they were good was because they were not offered with a worthless four cylinder, turbo charged, engine.
I've had 4 of these OBS trucks. Theyre great. They tend to need a little work here and there but if you keep up with the maintenance they can go 300k miles or more. Its all about the owners of the vehicle. These trucks started at decent price points and everyone bought em. But not everyone took care of em.
My 1994 silverado c2550 454 only has 65000 miles its like going back in time driving it
Oh, man, you are killing me here!
I just recently got back into roller skating. I have not really skated since the 90's. Used to skate a lot.
Here in the south you can get em rust free, but they are getting more expensive almost equal to the gmt800 for an equivalent truck.
shoot4fun82 +1 I'm in Louisiana same here
YaBoiScoots I much would my ZR2 be worth over there lol I'd be willing to drive
I got a 2000 Chevy with 320000 miles
is it still running good
Gas or diesel?
98 Silverado 1500 with 289k. Have had 0 issues out of it, still on factory rear brakes. Bought it brand new and have owned it ever since
Also keep an ignition switch handy with these...
Miss mine. I'm in AZ almost never see them rusted great vid.
eric rush me either. Just severe sun damage. But that's easy to fix.
I live i PA so there rusted to hell :(
Im from Cali so when i moved to the midwest i was astonished of the amount of rust trucks have. I was okay with sundamage but wow some tailbeds were just falling off
Yeah im in texas not a spec of rust here
I have a 98 gmc sierra z71 barely any rust just in the bed where it had a 5th wheel from previous owner.
Are they still rust buckets if you're not in the rust belt? My husband's doesn't have a spec of rust he doesn't baby it but doesn't abuse it, it has over 300k on the original drive train. ...
mine has NO rust in Seattle WA
Here in Texas, I have 3 of them with no rust at all anywhere
What happened to the original engine?
I gotta 95 Tahoe a 98 K3500 & a 99 s10 I love both 5.7s and my 4.3❤❤❤
Love my 92 K1500 5.7.
My 94 has just over 430k miles with original engine and transmission. But must have done 100 pair of breaks🤣
Those rust bucket silverados are what keep my non rust silverado going, scrap yard is full of them
Hm, funny. My 99 Tahoe with 115,000 miles doesn't have a spot of rust on it
Lol mine too. Have a 2500 98 mint 4x4
They are good-looking trucks and Have good clearance with sheet metal tucked up and real bumpers and rub strips!
I got a 92 with no rust damage and she runs amazing. Best truck I've ever own
One of the best real life videos on these trucks. Similar to my videos only this guy takes his time explaining the process of having a truck worth something... Good video dude..
I bought my 94 for 1500 bucks. I have another 4k in it now and about to do paint and body.
I've had it for 13 years, worse thing I had to do was the transmission but that is with 230,000ish miles. love it.
We have a 95 non vortec it pulled two full size ATVs and a big boat the engine started getting problems at 400,000 miles could have fix it but decided to put in a 383 stroker instead.
hahah your funny if the are built right and put expensive nice racing part in the will last forever
Motorider717 ha that guy is the idiot. 383 still better than a 302 or 351. Hell the gm 302 is better than Ford's 302.
I know any non stock engine becomes unreliable but the way we built it is with good strong parts
I’m a ford guy too but I’m not gonna sit here and act like they’re perfect. No manufacturer is.
I rather pay the gas vs a new car loan
Keep in mind every salvage yard in America has Chevrolet Silverado and the 5.7 motor is easy to fix
My 98 Tahoe was a beast it was the strongest truck I ever owned you could make it not run
I have a 99 tahoe and its also a beast! This thing has damn near done it all! Ive had to do regular maintenance but, its as tough as nails!
I think the engines are solid but the factory injection spider can be failure prone and the 4L60E transmissions had a number of weaknesses. Most of the ones I was looking at a few years back with fairly low mileage already had the trans. rebuilt.
exactly what i said the 4l60e was not to reliable. the 4r70w from the f150 was better i like both ford and chevy though.
Mine ate the trans twice. No towing lived a mile from work.
can attest, 97 K1500 with 250,000 miles. love this truck.
My dad just got this engine rebuilt. Hell yeah.
They’re strong trucks dude
I do hope the same is true for the Tahoe built on the same chassis!
Exact same thing
The same is true for GMT400 Tahoes.
Lower intake manifold gaskets and spider injectors. other than that they're good trucks
Alex's Bikes and Motors yeah that right there's what made most of them junk I got one that had those same two problems
Go 88-95 if you don't want that problem.
Sure, but when people have these issues they think its the head gasket then you buy it for nothing and fix it for cheap.
Woofer Cooker I'd rather fix the issues with the vortech trucks than live with the weak tbi.
I got one of these for 1500 the 500 was for a metal tool box in the back, as my first vehicle i love it.
