I hope everyone paid attention when he said the most important word: *metronome.*
Especially if you *think* you don't need one, you definitely need one. (just a tip from someone who was already teaching people to shred back in the 80's). Biggest mistake I ever made as a player was to *think* I didn't need one for the first few years I played because I had such good natural rhythm. They will make you more precise, cleaner, faster and generally more confident. They will also make good drummers love you, and crap drummers hate you, lols. But the audience will always always love you.

Great video! I own a guitar for years, but i always get "intimidated" by how much theory and even practice is required to make songs, improvise, etc. But, man, this video and the one about the beginner scales demystified it for me. You made it seem obvious, fun, useful. You made me realise the real importance of practicing picking patterns, learn the scales of a certain key (all of which always felt boring and, in reality, abstract for me), and well, the importance is HAVING LOADS OF FUN!
Thank you Rob! Please, keep this beginner series going :D

Video lesson number 3! Since this is in my listening wheelhouse I was particularly pleased with the subject matter of this video. I first picked up the guitar after my father passed away in 85 and I was listening to all the Hair Metal, Classic Rock, heck anything with Guitar in it. I loved Metallica back in the day and Megadeth. Anyways I sold all my stuff back in 86 before I left to go into the US Army. I picked up the guitar this year again and am trying to learn the instrument for real and I find that these three videos of yours are really perfect because as you stated multiple times I can slow it down, stop it, put it down and pick it back up after time at work or with my daughters. I have really enjoyed these videos tremendously and look forward to the latest entry in this series. Thanks for the inspiration and Cheers!

And also I just want to put in like a PS, you really inspire me a lot a lot of folks tell me you're 50 you got a major disability just quit give it up quit being a child, they have no idea what's going through my mind and the sounds that I hear when I think of my music, right now I'm literally sitting on about 200 songs worth of music but I have to get my equipment together you know as well as I do that's extremely important to have the right equipment for the sound that you want, and I have to admit it's quite discouraging when people tell me I'm too old I'm a gimp you know give it up you know don't don't disgrace myself by walking out on a stage with a guitar, I say thanks to you and people like you that I follow and that I respect but you're the only one that I ask advice from, like this and you inspire me to keep going so for you to reply to me sometimes the way you do every once in awhile means the world to me I don't feel alone then I feel like I got to a coach in my corner helping me, and for that Mr Chapman I am eternally grateful, but again I would like your honest opinion on what guitar would best suit what I'm trying to do between the schecter I believe it's the A1 apocalypse purple with tremolo, or the dragon blood ghost rep I don't know if it comes with trim lower or not I don't think it does, but I've also been very out there about your quality of guitars you give people more bang for their Buck like shafter does so to me coming from ESP over to Chapman or over to schecter is a major major move, I own a couple of esp's but the thing about the ESPYs I can afford they sound so much alike no matter what you do I need something that sounds different, so please any suggestions you can give me I would greatly appreciate and thank you so much every time I see your videos it's like a huge inspiration thank you and God bless

I was originally self taught too (took theory lessons on piano later). Learning how to play by ear is something I highly suggest to others. Music is all about your ears. Take good care of them too, they're the most important thing you'll ever have for being a musician. I wish I'd started using ear plugs sooner for gigs and band practice. I have severe tinnitus now and it's distracting at best.

I guess I could do lessons on youtube, but I seem to be getting lazy about even just playing in my old age, lols. But it's really fun watching these, and I'm subscribed to a number of music theory channels and still manage to learn more. Especially about the stuff I didn't bother with so much as a youngster like blues, country and jazz. I was always more of a neo-classical, prog rock, and metal guitarist back then.

I was lucky enough to see Metallica when I was a JR in high school in 1991. I used their music while lifting weights for American football and in my dream job until I was injured in the line of duty. Years later with a slight head injury that effected short term stuff (There are people out there with way worse brain injuries) my doctor told me to pick up and lean a new hobby. So I am driving home with the Metallica on and the same band that got me pumped for lifting got me to pick up a guitar. I started at the age of 44, I don't play much medal I love to play the blues. Thing is don't let people tell you that you are to old to pick up a guitar like some family and friends that I have proved wrong. I am not good but way better than they thought I would be after 2 years...thank you Rob for all the inspiration and lessons in all the videos you do on this channel and with Lee you are the coolest guitar company owner hands down

Started playing Offspring - Gotta Get Away, at one point. Then noticed you didn’t realize it. Atleast I learned a new old song because of it. That’s something great about a video like this. It’s all stuff I already know but I was still able to take something away from it. Also makes me realize I’ve been listening to the same music for over 25 years. Thanks for making 34 feel old Chappers.

Great video! That was a pretty cool and layman friendly break down of Metal chords, Thank you! I could hear so many songs it was crazy(like a train), makes me want to search out those songs again.
Rob you should sell bundles of gear that make the style of sound you are playing that day, priced: low, mid, high or mix and match, people would be inspired to buy a kit or a piece to build off of.
    Keep these coming please :)

So, can I say how much I love this? I’m definitely an intermediate player, been playing for years, but never played much metal… Or any metal! So this is still great for me. And I love the format. I love how it’s like I’m sitting down with you and having a lesson. I love the back-and-forth as you show something and then encourage us to stop and try it and come back and listen some more or to play along with you. It’s just great. And I definitely took advantage of it, grabbed my own vintage 80s super Strat (1989 Korean made Squier II) plugged into my katana mini and played along. Made for a great practice session. Thanks!
Btw, had the opportunity to play (unplugged) a Chapman ML1 pro at GC yesterday, and it felt amazing!

Snicker Uker Mostly because of time. Only had a few minutes and it was in the used gear room where they didn’t have an amp set up and ready to go, not that I could find anyway. Surprised to see it, it’s a pretty rare find in the states. So I definitely had to Pick it up and play it a bit, even if it was just unplugged.

I started out as a classic rock guitarist, then prog rock, then jazz fusion, then classical before I joined my first thrash metal band, lols.

@Snicker Uker : Always always try out an electric unplugged first. Then you can really hear the difference between even guitars of the exact same make and model better. Then after you've narrowed it down to 1 - 3 that sound the best unplugged, then plug them into the same amp you have at home, *not* a better amp. Way too many people plug into a better amp in the store, buy the guitar, then get home only to find the new guitar sounds only as good or worse than their old guitar.

Thank you Rob this is great i have GAINED more from this than anything im currently working on.
The upstroke is tough to start with but I just dip in and out of the video and Im slowly getting there .
One thing i would say to anyone who reads this you really need the tone . My little Vox mini rythm has the gain at 3 /4 and US Metal amp sim selected the volume however its on about a quarter as im a little worried i will launch the speaker thru the grill 🤣.

Shit, you weren't kidding about basics! Good to see tbh, in this era of videos where everyone is going mad in their guitar videos, this kind of video might benefit someone who's been on the fence about guitar music.
