    Great video honestly, very concise.
    About what you say at 7:30, I agree on most part but for the kid that watches this video and is new to guitar and somehow ends up reading my comment, don't hardwire yourself thinking that's the absolute correct way to play and whoever doesn't do it like that is doing it wrong, it's a matter of intention, dissonance is part of music and if u have a certain intention that deviates from the standard it doesn't mean it's wrong, playing wrong is easy, playing correct is harder and playing wrong but sounding right is the hardest easy thing.Y'all are now free to roll your eyes at my boomerisms.

    Great lesson! It's impossible to stress enough how important it is for new guitarists to take the time and get a basic understanding of the modes. I grew up with late 80's metal, learned Aeolian, and as a result I see the neck in Aeolian while playing. For example, when I'm playing A Mixolydian my brain sees Aeolian off the 2nd or B Aeolian. If I'm playing C Lydian I'm seeing Aeolian off the 3rd degree or E Aeolian. Listen to Bernth, kids, and learn your modes!

    7:55 I'm pretty sure there are several Fates Warning guitar solos that use Aeolian over Phrygian. When you were playing that example it felt very familiar and didn't seem that out of place to me 😉 Maybe the trick is to use that technique sparingly.

    This lesson is soooo helpful. As a Metal guitarist I've been always fearful about mode stuffs, since to me it relates to what Jazz guitarists playing 3000 chords at one song... But hey, only one note to change from major minor scale? I think this video is the most efficient way to get a glimpse of mode changes. Thank you for the lesson Bernth, greetings from Korea!

    This was eye opening to me a couple years ago when I started thinking more this way. I was used to thinking about modes as moving the root note to a different starting point of a major scale (which I think is the more traditional way of visualizing this) but it was challenging to latch onto the sound of the mode and go beyond just memorizing it. When I started thinking of what the mode does to the specific intervals of the scale it became a lot easier to actually think about and actually implement.

    Good explanation!
    My approach to modal scales is to start with pentatonic scale. The (major/minor) pentatonic contains exactly these notes all (major/minor) modes have in common. Modes then are nothing but adding a specific note within each third-step of the pentatonic.

    So a mode is basically the notes one can play right? So like let say a song starts on E phrygian the notes i can only play in the track (unless my swag level is high enough) would be E F G A B C and D because their intervals are 1 b2 3 4 something something (i have a goblin brain)
    Does that sound right? Also i know damn near nobody will understand

    I'll never understand the modal scales... The phrygian scale of the example gas the same notes of a C major scale. The E phrygian: E, F, G, A, B, C, D. The C major: C, D, E, F, G, A, B. So how can I improvise on a E phrygian scales? Do I have to use the notes of the C major scale?

    • @owenlewis6546
      @owenlewis6546 4 года назад +1

      Yes, you do use the notes of C major when you play in E Phrygian, but you put the tonal center at E not C. Its the same notes but thought of in a different way to produce a different sound. This probably isnt the BEST explaination but hopefully it helps a little

    • @Bernthguitar
      @Bernthguitar  4 года назад +1

      That is mentioned and one of the most important parts of the lesson actually :) I know that there's a lot to take in with long theory videos like that though 👍🏻

    • @EladWinner
      @EladWinner 4 года назад

      @@Bernthguitar I'm meant specifically like instead of saying for example that the E Phrygian mode is just the E natural minor with one different note, explaining that this is basically just taking the C natural Major and starting the scale from the 3rd degree in it being the 3rd MODE of the natural major - The Phrygian. For me personally that was the most crucial part for understanding the concept when I learned modes 🙂
      But I'm sure you just tried to make it as simple as possible for people who learn it for the first time.. Great job man! Waiting for your next videos!
