dude, you're a wizard. before watching this video i only knew how to play the d minor scale, but after watching it, i magically was able to jam in G dorian, A phrygian, Bb lydian, C mixolydian and A locrian.
One of the best things about this explanation is the fact that no new patterns were introduced. So, if you know your patterns well, you can modify which pattern you play where depending on the particular mode you are in. That's HUGE!
I wish I found this 2 years ago when I started exploring modes. For me it went back to the basics and my journey is further along, but you have brilliantly explained this. I will be refering this lesson to people who are starting out and want to know about learning the modes.
i still have some questions. If there's a backing track that plays D major scale chord : D - Bm - A - G. Simple progression. Which modes can i use? Thank you so much.
@@diabetespotato5388 The mode is driven by the chords in the track and what the tonic / home chord is. In your jam track, given the tonic / home chord is the D and the other chords in this track belong diatonically (i.e. in strict music theory) to the key of D-major (chords being D, Em, F#m, G, A, Bm, C#dim), your mode would be D-major (also called Ionian). But say the same chords in your jam track were re-arranged in the order of Bm-D-A-G, the song would be different and have a different flavour (given the minor start/end). The mode of this track would now be B minor (Aeolian) given the home chord / tonic is the Bm chord, despite all the chords still coming from the parent D-major key. Again, if the same chords in the jam track were rearranged to be A-G-Bm-D, the sound would be different again. A song starting on the 5th note of the scale (A) using the D major scale would make the mode A-Mixoldydian with its own sound / flavour. It again uses the exact same chords as those in D-major, but having the A chord as home / tonic and its own flavour (mixolydian is used often by AC/DC and rock songs). Summary: each of these re-arranged progressions in the jam track use the same chords, but mixed u create a different music style / flavour. When soloing, you can use those exact same notes from the parent key, but the tonic is the focus. You are soloing in the key of D in any of the modes taken from the D major parent scale (e.g. B minor, A mixolydian, G lydian, E dorian, F# phrygian, etc). Once you get this, then you can then explore how to mix modes together, and how music is sometimes constructed using different modes of the same parent key, and sometimes to parallel keys, or that breaking the laws of music can be used to create new music (blues does this playing the minor scale over its parallel major). Or that you could jam over a drone note usings several modes to create different flavours. For example drone note of say C played continuously, with no other chord changes, and you start to play a C mixolydian progression, then move to Ionian, but then change to a minor flavour mid-song e.g. c dorian and then aeolian). Lots of movie scores mix modes even across bar changes. Look for David Bennett Piano channel in Star Wars and how they create feelings: ruclips.net/video/RD6bY7WZVxg/видео.html&ab_channel=DavidBennettPiano. You finally made modes click for me!
FINALLY all clicked!! Got it!! Totally understand how to apply the modes!! Wow!!! That was a very clear and concise explanation! Also, you repeat yourself a lot which is extremely effective!!
Loved the video ....I found the simplest way to ( I hope) understand this, is to take what you said about each mode in relation to the Ionian scale, and then move the Ionian scale down to change the mode but retaining the starting (ionian) shape..For example, the A major (Ionian) pattern in the upper register on the D and G strings are both fretted at the 18th and 19th frets...If you expand the Ionian notes to encompass all the other strings and frets , the shape of the scale is clear. This means If you start an octave up using the 18/19 frets for A major, then all the modes shift two frets down using the Ionian shape, with the exception of the 3rd - 4th Mode Lydian and the 6-7th mode Locrian which are only one fret down .. You can of course apply this using the first 12 frets ( in A major starting 6/7th frets) and work down to Lydian before running out of frets and simply go up from the Ionian (6/7th fret) position to Locrian (7/8), Aolian (9/10) and Mixolydian (11/12).....SO to play the modes its a slide rule principal - shift and apply .

Far out! This is the best MODES tutorial so far. I can understand it so clearly. Presentation is nice. voice is mellow. pace is alright. Please do more! Thanks in adv.
This video helped me eartrain myself into modes a bit further. If you can run up and down a major scale by ear, you can run up and down a mode by starting on it: D, then E, then F, and you've just practiced your Dorian, Phrygian and Lydian modes, at least by singing. You can chop the section you're singing to R thru 5 and back down, and reverse order on the whole scale or just the portion. If you ever did vocal exercises, that's what you did: sing portions of scales to warm up. Where progress really starts to happen, I imagine, as a guitarist, is when you learn how to treat modes on the axe the way you do the major scale, or your favorite blues scale. The example of Lydian at 4 min. or so includes those little changes of direction, suspensions, trills.. whatever your melodic style is. Good work here. Thumbs up.
Completely mind blown. This was the first video i watched about modes and i think I don't need to watch any other video to understand this. 🔥Thank you.

Amazing information, I have been struggling for years to wrap my head around this stuff, and I think for the first time in my life I may have understood what I have been so desperately hard trying to learn. Thank you.
modes explained the best way i have ever heard is that they are simply inversions of the parent scale. this way it doesn't matter what kind of scale it is just so it is a parent scale.
This is how I've come to understand it. I learned the circle of fifths. The chord families associated with it. Modes are defined by the degrees of the scale that are associated with a given chord. Dorian flats the 3rd and the 7th. Phrygian flats the 2nd, 6th, and 7th. Lydian sharps the 4th. Mixolydian only flats the 7th. Aeolian(natural minor) flats the 2nd, 3rd, 6th, and 7th. Locrian flats, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th. After memorizing those sequences. I then applied them to the the relevant chords. Example, Applying Dorian mode to Amaj, (A ,B ,C# ,D ,E , F# ,G#) Now becomes (A ,B ,C( flat 3rd) ,D ,E ,F# ,G(flat 7th) -- ). by flatting the 3rd. Amaj has become the key of Am, for which I can go to the circle of fifths, and play around within the Am chord family in Dorian.
I have just started trying to learn modes and have watched a few videos beore this, but your use of visuals is exactly what I needed. Thank you SO much for your creativity and teaching prowess!

Finally, someone is able to explain modes and I don't walk away with more questions!!! Thank you for making this video! Some of them just happen to know how to effectively use those modes better than most.

definitly you´re the best teacher on net....I decided to choose you like my personel mentor---.really you explain so clear. Thanks a lot!
My struggle to understand modes comes to an end after a decade. Thank you sir!
The best video on understanding modes on the internet.
Absolutely wonderful video. I have a degree in music and a masters degree in composition but this is the most clear description of modes i've come across. Keep up the great work :)
You went to the wrong music schools. This is not correct.
@@5400bowen In fact, I attended superb music schools. I'm not sure what part of this you deem to be incorrect but I'd be happy to hear your thoughts on it. Theoretically, what is explained in the video is sound.
Far out! This is the best MODES tutorial so far. I can understand it so clearly. Presentation is nice. voice is mellow. pace is alright. Please do more! Thanks in adv.
This is the sort of explanation, i was looking for. Clarity and content.
Thanks!
Heard many explanations.. But can understand none.. This is the only one which made me understand modes..thank u man.. 👍
🔥Thank you.
Thank you Samrat
This is the best modes explanation video I've ever seen!
Very simplified, thank you. I get bored with the pentatonic, natural minor, and major scales. This will add plenty of flavor to my playing.
Ten years struggling with this !
And in one single video everything is crystal clear ! Why it’s about the method to explain this where lies all the intelligence !! Thanks
Subscribed ... you’re the best !
Thank you Sven!
God bless you, dude. Finally I clearly understand how to use modes.
Thank you so much for this!❤ It’s opened my eyes! After so many hours of useless stuff… You rock!! 🤘😍🎸
I'll agree. Definitely the best explanation I've seen on modes so far
Yes. That's is a very healthy way to look at it.
Nope, he has this completely backwards.
@@5400bowen You should explain if you're going to say that I was doing it backwards.
The visually enhanced diagrams are grade A+++++ Makes it very easy to see what is being explained EXCELLENT work !!!
Grab a pen and paper guys! This was the best video about modes I have ever watched.
I have just started trying to learn modes and have watched a few videos beore this, but your use of visuals is exactly what I needed. Thank you SO much for your creativity and teaching prowess!
Nope, he starts off way off. I don’t care if he gets to the real point later, his first statement of what modes are is way off.
Beautifully explained.......straight forward and simple.. .....
Absolutely Gold explanation of the modes! Best coverage and straight forward explanation of the modes I have ever seen! YOU THE MAN!
Good job. Nice graphics. I always try to present a visual when teaching modes to students. This is excellent!
Well thank you Steve!! Keeps me motivated :)
Best explanation of this I have found. Very logical and concise. Well worth watching.
Found this video last night and have already shared it with four other players today. I have a list of “light bulb moment” videos that I frequently share with other players - thank you for adding another video to the list! Excellent explanation and truly appreciated!
Finally, someone is able to explain modes and I don't walk away with more questions!!! Thank you for making this video!
I have to admit that now that I understand them, it took out some of the mystique from my favorite songs. Musicians who I thought were geniuses aren't so much now. Some of them just happen to know how to effectively use those modes better than most.
I learned 2 modes today Thanks to God and also Thank you Sir for making this video😊❤Godbless Sir
This is best explanation.Thankyou so much for uploading this video .
I really thankyou from the bottom of my heart for providing such type of informative video along with the animation and which is FREE OF COST.
May god bless you ❤️

This guy is a gifted teacher! Everything is clear. Now, back to practice.
Thanks Phil.

Francois Georgy (comment below) expressed it perfectly - thank you QJamTracks for your skillful presentation - it did it for me too
I’m blown away😭🔥🔥🔥🔥I’d pay for such a lesson 🔥✨
Wow I am shocked by how great of a video this is. Theory videos aren’t usually good and when I watch them I still am confused. But after watching I finally understand modes. Well done.
