Hi guys, really hope you enjoy this and find it useful - I did try to keep this as basic as possible but I really hope it doesn’t come across as condescending if you already know some theory. Have a great day and take it easy Chappers
There seems to be an extra audio clarity in your videos this year. Even with RUclips compression and gain. I can hear the individual notes better on chords. The thing is you have change at least three major components recently. What do you think is contributing the most to this? Is it the new magnets that are designed specifically for guitar? The new v2 guitars? That new Barefaced cab?
Thanks from a beginner. I found your video a useful gathering of a lot of information I’ve been learning and brought it together. Not condescending at all rather supportive and encouraging. 👍🏻

Rob Chapman just wanted to say hello. I think you will be seeing me around soon. I’m about to join the club...but in a way that has never ever been done before. Cheers. I will try to figure out how to get you my email address.
Thank you Mr Chapman for the chord tips. Don't have next to any money for other then paying my bills. Feeding myself it helps a lot someone is willing to give you a free lesson don't find that much on RUclips really. I used to watch it's a music store with the captain I always enjoyed watching you guys together hope you guys are doing well
The german version would be: "Eine Alte Dame Geht Bier Einkaufen" - an old lady goes to get beer Edit: had a stupid mistake in the german sentence, since in swissgerman (of my region) nobody uses the equivalent of the standard german "Bier einkaufen" but much rather "Bier holen" which gives a H (B) String instead of an E String.
You are a man of many talents but you are a phenomenal instructor. I think you were born to teach. You have a comfortable and fun energy in your instruction videos 👨🏫Prof. M.Lord
Rob, this was great. Clear, concise, slow ( thanks) and wonderful camera work on the fingering. I have stopped watching several you tube teachers who go too fast ( at least for me) and skip over things that leave me spinning. I thought your presentation was spot on. MORE PLEASE!!! Cheers from Montana.
I've been playing guitar for almost 30 years (at a mediocre level) and I've learned a bit of music theory along the way. Even still, I still watch videos like this to refresh the basics, and maybe I've overlooked something, or maybe you bring new stuff to my attention.
Chappers I’m picking guitar up again after a several year long hiatus. I found you through Andertons by clicking a video on accident and have been hooked by your personality your skill and method ever since. Thank you for helping me knock the dust off again! Cheers from Tennessee!
Absolutely Brilliant Video, Rob - your patience with us beginner twats and love for the instrument shine through. Your explanations are simple, thorough and clear. Excellent communication throughout. A winner!
Maybe I am just far enough along, in my guitar journey, for this lesson to come at a perfect time... Rob you are now my favorite guitar wizard! This is just what I needed at this time! Thanks!
Hey Rob great job. I wrote the chords down starting with Cmaj of course and followed the minor chords adding in the Mode names and numbers. Thanks for helping to resurrect nearly 50 years of forgotten theory!
Good job is giving people the basics to learn and enjoy with rather than showing how good you are. I’ve been at it over 50 years and I still watch this stuff, it was a lot harder when a beginner had to use a book like Alfreds Method One. Keep it up and grow more players of all ages.
This is the first video I have seen where it all makes sense already and that’s only from years of watching Chappers and the captain. Still great to watch as always. Great for beginners!
I've seen The Captian play the second version of a C chord many a time and wondered what it was and now I know. Such a great and useful lesson, please keep them coming as this one is something every one should learn early but is generally missed by many teachers.
Man Rob - you are really the best guitar teacher ever - no questions remain unanswered (this applies to all of your tutorials). Precise and clearly explained every single step - just awesome. Thumbs up for your didactic skills. Thanks for your valuable videos - just fun to watch and learn . And by the way, please visit Germany again soon with Dorje.
Thank you so much for the explanation on the bar chord and how you place your index finger. That one little tip has made bar chords far easier than they use to be and they all so clear!
Thank you! Very informative and thorough. I have been in a 20 year slump with my playing. It’s as if I had hit a wall and could not progress no matter what I tried. It has been so frustrating that I just quit altogether. I’m back now with a shiny new, fresh mindset and plenty of motivation. I am now progressing to where I don’t have to play the same songs and licks that I have been playing over and over for years. That was the wall that I’m speaking of. Same stuff, over and over and over again until I just couldn’t do it anymore. Your videos inspire me to get better and I thank you for that. Greatly appreciated my friend!
Great breakdown Rob!! This is the bread and butter of my song writing too! Like you said certain chords like B may not be used as much as the others but it has its place and time. A ton of the greatest songs ever written involve these ten chords! Just takes time/repetition and they become second nature to play. Soo many things you can do with them. Rock on!!
This video was fantastic and helps build my knowledge a bit more in terms of the chord shapes but the real benefit, as a beginner, was learning the scalar relationship between the chords. Lovely video, Sir!
I learned these chords when I was ten from my dad. He called them cowboy chords and I must say it was very helpful for me to learn chords first before I started playing scales and harder licks. Really great video! 👍
Fantastic and very clear display of knowledge, I’ve known these shapes and used them but never knew their names. I learnt from watching guys and from magazines before the internet.. thank you for a great lesson!
I'm looking forward to learn how to play the lap steel guitar! Watching this video is a lot of help! Thanks again!! Also looking forward to keeping in touch!! I love your music! Great voice as well!! ✌😎🎸🔊🎶🎶
I like your videos so far, thanks. I was a drummer for an odd 20 years but after moving to Ireland I had to start playing guitar to keep on musicking. Nice and clear instruction.
I've been playing guitar for 13yrs. Learning other people's work. Metallica copy machine type stuff. I'm at a point in my life where, I want to learn, read and right music. Really didnt know where to go, to start from the basics. Thank you for posting this. I'm using this video for my foundation. Thank you.
Howdy, Rob - I am continuously in awe as to your ability to wield the excalibur of tone and inspiration I've been playing for 40 years and I learn from you every single time - this lesson was no exception Keep it up and Bod Bless
Hello Rob from the USA. First off, I had forgotten the B chords completely and wasn't using them. I need some chord practice for sure even after 13 years of playing. Secondly. I will also experiment using my Capo that is collecting dust with the 2 slides I don't use either. Thanks again and I will be checking out more of your vids as you are easy for me to understand compared to other teachers. Peace!
I'm sure he had a little smirk on his face when he said 'Here's a G String' :) I loved you since you and Cap'n ventured into vids for Andertons, and like how you have simplified these vids!
Dear Professor Chapman, I whish had picked up the guitar at 12 and not 42... After 13 years of playing I can now do a credible Crossroads (cheating around in the solo) and half decent Pride and Joy (oooh the practice that went into that intro and fugged aboud da solo...) but I can thoroughly enjoy your lessons and demos. All the best from Stockholm, /Peter
Hi Rob, love the info and the work involved. What to play, how and why, is invaluable to an older beginner like myself. Been noodling for a while, and decided not long ago, to "start at the beginning," where I should have done years ago. This is a great help. Cheers.
Extremely useful Rob, and explained extremely well. Learning these, and learning to smoothly transition between them, will put any player well ahead. Many thanks! 👍
I really like the frame on the Wall with no picture in it ;) and i also like you and your Videos, especially the Videos with you and the captain on andertons tv :) cheers
I'm about six months into this learning guitar business now, I've spent more money on it than I deserve and watched countless hours of instructional stuff and this is right up there. Hope there's a bunch more
Thanks Rob. It is always good to revisit the basics. You shouldn't practice until you get it right, you should practice until you can't get it wrong. My theory knowledge is practically non existent but this was very useful.
It's fun to return to the basic. I was listening and thinking that this is the basic of music and you don't need much more than that to play anything that you want. Yes there are other chords, 7th, 9th, but there so many songs are using only those basic chords that I could have fun for hours with only that. Thanks for sharing. Really enjoy the way you teach.
Great video, Rob! Really like the demo of the posture for a barre chord and explanation on the capo for changing the key. You should do a series of these for each key as it would be very helpful for learning more chord shapes the proper way.
Bro. This is exactly what I needed. I have been what seems to be “writers blocked” so to speak, for months. I just haven’t been able to get it until I watched this video, so thank you kind sir. Keep doin what you are doing, I look forward to watching more of your videos.

great video i like that you did the major scale with the 3 note per string method i've been meaning to learn this technique.. and i finally understand the 3 down from minor to make a major pentatonic but whats new to me is 2 down with the major scale , makes a minor , or dorian scale , hey !!! if that what u say i believe it
Thanks Rob I'm 3 months into my on-line course and loving the journey so far, I'm finely starting to play things that nearly sound like songs lol. Rob, thank you. This is great and if you wanted to continue, I believe some remakes of your original vids on scales (I didn't know who Dorian was until you introduced us--haha), lessons, etc. would be wonderful. I also think teaching some key techniques would be great--like how to do proper double stop bends, etc. You have developed your shape and movement techniques to a fine art and I would love you hear your techniques on these and others. Does any of that rambling make sense? "Thank you, Sir...may I have another?" Cheers.
Fantastic chappers thanks, Iv watched Justin, Andy guitar, etc but this is by far helped me! I am struggling with barre chords, as in transition between barre and open chords. Any tips please. Jamie from Trowbridge. 👍
