Attention beginners; everything you need to know (to improvise)(ehh, chords and things but wtf) is right here! I'm 66 years old and already knew all of this but: This is the "singularly" best guitar lesson I have ever seen! It has taken me a lifetime to figure all this out on my own. If you're a beginner, commit all this to memory so that you don't have to think about it; just do it. Wow! The KEY to improvising is right here; look no further. If this doesn't DO IT for you you'll never GET IT. You have seen THE LIGHT! Rock on!

@@carsonjimbob4338Lately I've been working on Brian May's leads (Queen); one would not want to emulate their lifestyle but great musicians; I play the lead on the clap, clap, boom part; love it! Gospel, Country, Blues, Metal, Chet Atkins, BB King, SRV, Motley Crue, Chuck Berry, Hendrix, etc. For example:. The lead in ZZ Top's LaGrange (Billy Gibbons) follows the pentatonic scale in the first of the two leads; in places... note for note. So, I use the pentatonic and major scales of any key to "have notes that will always work...". Basically I use the major pentatonic and minor pentatonic "patterns" or "shapes". Major pentatonic has what I'll call a country sound. Learn all that stuff in this lesson and you're almost done! No crap! Rock on!
One more thing... Most people aren't geniuses. It never hurts to know what the hell you're doing. Why do musicians say "the 3rd, the 5th, etc. ? Know the answer to that! Best wishes!

I get that guitar is fun but if you truly love it then you'd probably dig out a book or three dozen and figure out the theory behind what does what. As Yngwie used to say, learning scales is like "eating your greens." It's not fun but once you learn them, which isn't hard then you're about an hour away from knowing all your different modes and how to constuct chords.

Initially I thought a friend of mine had been replaced by alien pod-people 🥜. Instead, I learned he had been studying your video.
He's suddenly playing scales, picking out melodies from recordings, attempting to bend notes. And then he played something more sophisticated sounding ... he said it was a "Dorian" scale. Pod person 👽!
My point... this video helped to unlock a whole new musical dynamic for a self-described strummer. For years, I've offered to help with scales, visualization and improvising. After studying your video, he finally told me he had been too "embarrassed"(???) to ask for help.
He always thought he would have figured it out on his own (by now). He honestly believed you had to be "gifted" in some way to learn this stuff. Nothing ever clicked for him.
Long story short. You've either demystified some key concepts for lots of folks here or you're the alien pod-people overlord. Thanks either way!
My friend is turning 70 this year. Life's too short to let embarrassment get in the way of your goals and it's never too late to learn something new.
So now he's all energized about music theory and more annoying.... "How do you know it's a relative minor? It's always asking for money."

I have been playing guitar for decades, literally, and stumbling around like a blind man when it comes to creating a solo. I'm like the guy that types with one finger of each hand knowing he should learn some keyboard skills.
Yes I could eventually come up with some cools stuff but I had no way of knowing how I got there...it was totally trial with much error and then struggling to remember what it was I found with no way to apply it to other songs...each time it was start from scratch all over again.
I knew I needed to learn some theory but it just never worked for me.
A couple days ago I watched this video and now I can't avoid using the things I learned in this lesson! It is remarkable because I feel like I have a cheat code to exploring and creating melody!! Only, unlike getting a cheat code in a video game which invariably ruins the game for me, this new knowledge you have given me has done the opposite for me with regards to music....I am now unbroken for the first time!!
Armed with this new knowledge this morning I found myself taking that third pattern and transposing it to start on the A string, 5th fret, because I was going to play over something in D that was starting there and didn't want to start way up at the tenth fret. So I figured 'D is D...thats the root so learn damn it!'
So I found it works just fine and that's when it all seemed to be so clear for a change. I now have a reference for anything I do or hear...find the root and I'm off and running.....this is SO FUN!
So thank you and well done Mr. Chapman! I am eternally grateful for your spirit and enthusiasm that drives you to offer up such a resource that opened up this path for me that I so wanted to explore for so long. I hope you get all from music that you seek and you continue to help pioneer the musical territories of the internet because you earn it.
    Thanks!

    Holy Shit Rob, wtf.
I've been stumbling about for the last 30 years using the Pentatonic and bits of the Dorian not knowing what I was doing or how to really use it (didn't even know it was called the Dorian).
This has been the single best guitar lesson I have ever seen.
Shit dude, it just makes sense now. My mind is blown, I'm feeling a little dizzy and light headed thinking about the potential it has opened up for me.
Thank you for posting such a simple and well explained video man.

Thanks rob I've been on and off learning the guitar, I'm an Audio Engineer, so everything I've learned has been through watching and emulation, this explained tons, nobodies told me how to use, the scales, I knew the basic1234,1234 scales from the nut from e to e, now it's like someone turned on the lights. I watch sooo many real excellent internet instructors, but this one showed me the way, I am so psyched...THANKS SO MUCH !!

@@GuitarsAndSynths My teacher won't teach this stuff unless I ask and then only in small quantities which left me having to know what to ask on my own. I've done better on my own charting out the circle of 5ths and developing a basic mode/root note chart but you need to know the major scale backward and forward for that to work. Lucky for me :))

Chappers, thank you, thank you, thank you. I've been playing the guitar since I was 12 on an old Gretsch jazz guitar (tan), then moved to learning Classical Spanish Guitar for the next two years, then picked up a white Strat and thought I was God, playing what I heard, felt but mostly imitated people like Clapton, Hendrix, then as time went on Robin Trower and so on. I played in a group for a while, then, my guitarring buddy died when I was 35 and i gave everything up. This year I am 73 so I decided to buy a Start, a Custom Les Paul Black Beauty with three humdingers, and a Custom 1960 'Ice Tea', Straight Gibson, and a Marshall Amp (SS sadly), but my playing was still not up to scratch, so I found a Gibson guitar Course (DVD's + CDs), bought lots of books, etc. Then I happened on your 'You cannot exist without these - 3 Scales lesson'. I learned more watching this with an open mouth, and yes I was hungry too, than my entire sixty years of playing a guitar (badly) it seems. You are awesome and a wonderful, wonderful teacher. (That's coming from a teacher of nearly forty years by the way at college and university level.) You enthralled me and I am so, so grateful to you for making something that looks blistering impressive look so incredible easy. I have now got to make my niot yet arthritic fingers move incredibly fast using those three scales or as you say the 7 Diatonic Modes. At long last, I can now play the guitar the way I want to. Bless you mate.
