- This is part 1 of a 2 part review of the Top Studio master detail set for the Tamiya McLaren Honda MP4/4. I will also compare two different Tamiya releases for this kit. Part 2 can be found on RUclips and covers more of the parts in detail, plus photos of the completed model are included. Manuel Ozorio found these web sites for more photos of the 1:1 car and engine: CAR = www.gurneyflap...., Engine = www.gurneyflap....
What an unbelievable piece of work! It's clearly evident how much time and thought went into producing that detail-up set. Thanks for the thorough review!
It certainly looks like it. I couldn't see any detail or size differences between the two. The decals are different and the newer one has the driver.
Thanks for the comment Styrene!
Thanks for the kind words. I have more coming.
Great video love the detail and tips you give.
Ted,
I have the earlier release of the the kit. Wow
Thought there was a detail kit out there for it, that is just intense. That makes me sweat. Lol. Thanks for taking the time.
I always pronounced it ta-me-ya, so I thought I better look it up online, if I'm going on record. I got various results and picked the way an announcer said it while covering a model car contest. I figured if he does this for a living, he must know. Oh well...
Thanks for looking.
WOW, you should get a prize or something! I'm afraid you'll have to settle for knowing you're the 500th subscriber. I'll give you a shout out in my next video.
Congrats!
Holly shit! That detailing kit has more parts than the real car!
Yeah, it's intimidating at first glance, but considering some of the parts are replacements for the kit parts, it lowers the difficulty rating a little. Some of the other detailing parts are pretty small and will take extra time. I haven't started mine, but it sure looks like it would make an awesome model. Thanks for watching, Carlos.
Tamiya offer the best models!! By far!
Im your 500th subscriber yay!

just a basic question for ya...this upgrade kit does it come with instructions or is it a go by the eye type of thing and upgrade what you'd like? I'm a beginner and I've only ever assembled models straight out of the box and nothing else.
I bought the mp4/5 a few years ago when those re-releases came out, and didn't come with a driver =(
do you know whether this kit would work for the MP4/8?
Great video!
Thanks for watching. I wish I had time to actually start building this model.
Please keep us posted if you ever start building it, the level of detail on this one is awesome.
I just purchased the MP4/4, w/ the drivers that he shows, but I can't believe they don't have the Marlboro logo on it! I have to get the decals now! Please help, trying to find it (from your second video).
It's ridiculous that they remove cigarette sponsors. Samething happened in our country and cigarette sponsorship was also removed from rallying and cricket. This theory is that it'll stop new people from smoking if they don't see the branding. I'm 38 now, I've worked with a lot of the brands through my life and have never put a filter in my gob. Must be some weak people out there... *drinks another bottle of Coca Cola*
I recently purchased the MP4/5B and I was curious, I've been trying to find a photo-etch kit for it but no such luck. Would the Photo-etch kit for the mp4/4 be a good substitute if I can modify some pieces ?
I'm not an expert, but the MP4/4 was a '88 car and the MP5/B came out in '90. Given the two year difference you'd expect drastic changes (especially nowadays). The biggest difference is the engine bc the rules outlawed turbos starting with the MP4/5 in '89. The rear body and wings were changed on the 5B to accommodate larger radiators. The photos I've seen of the 4/4 and 4/5B look very similar. You'd probably be able to use most of the parts, but there are differences - the engine especially. If you're not building this as a 'show-correct' model, I'd say go with it. Thanks for the question and for watching my video.

Thanks for your input and you are right I completely forgot about the engine changes between the two cars. I did end up getting the driveshaft, brake kit, and air funnel kit from top studios, and a carbon decal set from studio 27 so I think I'll have my hands full haha. I'm no where near the skill level that you're at but I thought I'd give myself a challenge.
JSams4131 Smart move to just buy particular detailing parts rather than the whole set. Definitely need the Marlboro decals. Keep us informed of your progress.

Will do, still planning out my attack at the moment and sanding/painting where I can. Hoping to at least get a coat of primer and pure white on the body by the end of the weekend :)
nice nihongo pronunciation. I always get incorrectly corrected at my local hobby shop. even with mnemonic aids, like "Tommy Yah," they dont seem to want to pronounce it correctly.
Smoking kills, we all know that, but it´s really neccesary to take off the Marlboro sponsorship of a miniature? Nobody is gonna start smoking for that, i just can´t understand it
I'm with you. The funny thing is that the vertical bars that replaced the Marlboro wording is still saying MARLBORO by design - your brain fills in the blanks.
