He told me that hippos are the only animal he was ever afraid of. He could happily walk up to great apes or bears without protection, but would never enter hippo waters unless seated in the largest and sturdiest of boats.
Hippos are not vegetarian they are omnivores and have been known to eat people on several occasions. One man was ambushed in some bushes and mauled by a hippo his corpse was found half eaten by the hippo. There was another incident when a hippo capsized a mans canoe and he died from his injuries (he apparently broke his leg so he couldn’t swim and drowned).
They don't necessarily eat meat as part of their diet, they tend to eat meat when food is scarce . They will cut you in half but won't really eat you. There stomachs aren't really made to eat meat in a way .
They do sometimes eat meat, especially when grass is scarce, but the vast majority of their diet is vegetation and they’ll get sick if they eat too much.
