@Christina Woodard actually hyenas are not canids, nor related to them at all. Hyenas are more related to cats than dogs if anything, but hyenas have their own family. The creature hyena is most related too is the mongoose.
At the beginning of the video it's shocking how huge a hyena is compared to humans. And it's way more dangerous than any domesticated dog. I think it would be hard to survive even if just one attacks you... And a clan has dozens of them.
Imagine being caught by just one, and you have no weapons. Humans have been known to be surprisingly powerful opponents in one-on-one conflict. But I'm not so sure, they weigh a little less than us, and have a stronger bite. The only advantage I see us having is choking. Maybe agility. I'd be more scared of hyenas than even lions since they're more likely to attack you and they don't kill before eating.
@@MMO10216 When I go to Africa, I'm always sure to have a weapon.... Hyenas are cruel opportunist, they don't go for the kill they will just start eating their prey while their alive. I still remember hearing a story about a little boy that got attacked by one and had his lower jaw torn out of him by the hyena, thankfully the boy survived this horrible ordeal; and thanks to a surgeon, he used a part of the boy's bone(don't remember what part it was) to reconstruct his lower jaw. I hope that people that live around these animals are more careful no one deserves to go through that, especially not children.
That’s only true for large prey like Zebra and Buffalo but solo Hyena hunts smaller Antelope like Impala and young Kudu and snaps it’s neck instantly, much faster than big cats so they’re not always cruel, if they can reach your neck or skull, they’ll happily crush or snap it for you 😂 - ruclips.net/video/JvJaYBpmI_s/видео.html

Weird noises do not really deter hyenas. It may only deter aardwolf hyenas, as aardwolf hyenas are sensitive to sounds. @@No565nwbw We do have hyenas in India, but the striped hyenas. They are smaller than the African spotted hyenas and are more solitary. They are also primarily scavengers who mostly feed on carcasses or kills stolen from leopards, wolves or dholes.
Let's survive a spotted hyena Step 1: Beware of their laughter Step 2: Don't go out at night Step 3: Be strong Step 4: Don't run away spotted hyenas are much faster than you Step 5: Be together
Here in Africa there's two animals we're very wary of. Sure Lions are scary, but the ones that sends a chill down your spine are hyenas, Wild dogs. There are numerous horror stories we grew up listening to about Hyenas and Wild Dogs. It's mostly because when these animals hunt you down, there's very little chances you'll survive.
I think the most terrifying thing for me is that when they do catch you, they will literally eat you alive. No bite to to the neck to suffocate you like a Lion or Tiger (granted I know Lions can and do on occasion start eating while their prey is alive if they have to) , no drowning like a crocodile. They just tear you open and disembowel you while you’re still breathing.
These human-wildlife conflicts are on the increase in Kenya. In Dec 2023- Jan 2024 alone, many cases have been reported in my area(casualties arising from hyena attacks). They hunt in packs and are fearless. They are being spotted as early as 6 pm and also in the wee hours of the morning.
"Your tree climbing skills won't save you from a cheetah" Um, yes it can. Cheetahs also have extended claws like dogs do, and thus suck at climbing. Stay in that tree, or more accurately climb down anyway because cheetahs can't risk injury, even from an unarmed person. They'd rather treat you like the predator in the scenario and leave.
A punch in the side could break a rib, cheetahs are indeed very concious of injury. They wouldn't risk attacking an ape larger than it that's also probably stronger.
I think you forgot three more very important ones: 1. Play recorded noises of larger predators such as lions and tigers. 2. Determine which species you are talking about - only spotted and striped hyenas are known to attack people. 3. Determine which large predators have the upperhand above hyenas.
Large predator sounds may not completely deter spotted hyenas, maybe lone individuals, but if a good amount of spotted hyenas are chasing you down, you are pretty much dead unless you climb up something like a tree or big rock they can't get up.
