    F.A.Q (I'll update this if people have more questions)
    1. Why no cage?
    Cage is being sorted before it goes on track again and was already planned before this day.
    2. Why no HANS
    It's on the to-buy list.
    3. Why do you shake the wheel.
    It's a weird habit I picked up for sim racing. I'm working on it.
    4. Why doesn't your speedo work?
    The car has a ZF BMW gearbox which means this shit don't work no more. If you look closely you can see my GPS speedo in the video.

      Dashboard wise: install an Aim dash. You have full datalogging and can analyse your laps afterwards including laptiming. Also allows you to add additional sensors. On a turbo'd miata I would add an exhaust temp sensor, gearbox temp sensor, ... Then you also have working speedometer and it is used in professional racing. I installed one recently on my Lotus to replace my datalogging laptimer and now everything is in one unit. Very convenient and handy.
      The calipers should be enough. I would really give RS14 pads a go. They have a perfect bite up till 700°C. The discs should handle it as the miata is very low weight. I think a combination of brake pads and steel brake lines will be more than sufficient. (unless the discs are bent or damaged offcourse). For the current brake lines, the rubber ones tend to flex under high temperatures decreasing the brake pressure feel you're having as the tubes flex while you floor the pedal and brake fluid pressure builds up in them.
      Cooling wise, no experience on a miata though. Better radiators and more fans is probably the way to go there. I would also ask them to keep an eye on transmission temps. A ZF should be able to handle around 450 hp but that is generally for road usage. On track they really take a beating so it might be worth keeping an eye on it. It's better to avoid damage than blowing a tranny because then you'll really be spending some $$$ for rebuild/replacement.

  • @admkbldwn
    @admkbldwn 4 года назад +779

    I don't know if you've installed brake ducting on it yet, but if you haven't you should look into it -- just some simple, flexible ducts with some holes cut in the wheel wells to pass them through would do wonders for brake temps. Also, you should absolutely install some vents or at least cut holes in your hood. Without someplace for that air to escape, you end up with a high pressure area stacked up in your engine bay that keeps the hot air from getting out and restricts airflow through your radiator and intercooler. So the good news here is that your issues have relatively simple fixes!

      @@willsee7452 Those don't work on circuit cars, you have a high pressure zone at the base of the windscreen that prevents the hot air from escaping through there. It's actually counterproductive because the pressure that gets in from there works against the Air that tries to go through your Radiator. So, not a good Idea.

    1. Ditch the slotted rotors. Good blanks are all you need and want.
    2. What kind of pads were you running? A lot of guys have good results with ST-43 or R-4E pads.
    3. Get some ducting for the rotors.
    4. Do you have an oil cooler? They can pull a lot of heat out of the engine.
    5. Get a HANS device. You've got the helmet and harness, be safe!

    1 - Get the proper brake pad. E compound is a good pad on the street, B is more of a race only pad. I've ran them both.
    2 - check AP Racing, you may find a rotor that is a direct fit for your setup. I found the AP rotors better than the Wilwood rotors.
    3 - install some brake cooling ducts.
    Lastly, try downloading Harry's Lap timer app. It's cheap and a decent way of tracking your laptime progress and speeds.

    One thing I think you should make sure is that you have steel brake lines, and braided steel connections to your calipers. Is your brake fluid heats up, the typical rubber lines will get soft and start expanding. This leads to a squishy pedal, and can also lead to those brake lines exploding.

  • @DjDolHaus86
    @DjDolHaus86 4 года назад

    Brake ducting through the front bumper using a bit of ducting pipe to direct air onto the back of the rotors will help with cooling a whole bunch, reasonably cheap and easy to do.
    One interesting thing to note is that if you look carefully at your flyby at 10:27 you can see the bonnet lifting, this happens because air is getting forced and compressed under the car and then expands up into the engine bay. If the air can't escape fast enough the pressure builds and lifts both the bonnet and ultimately the front of the car slightly which will manifest as front end lift at higher speeds. To alleviate this issue the most simple solution is to drill some big holes in the bonnet so the air has an easier time escaping, this will also help with engine cooling a bit due to the increased airflow through the engine bay.
    The front bumper of the MX5 isn't exactly great at aiding airflow though the engine bay so you can either go down the cheap and messy route of carving it up to make the 'mouth' bigger or you can buy an aftermarket one with larger apertures. You'll need to both vent the bonnet and widen the intakes to see the most improvement otherwise its kind of like putting a bigger turbo on a stock exhaust (all succ and no blow).
    Car looks awesome though and please don't take this as me trying to tell you what to do with your car/money, project cars are personal and individual and that's the way they should be. Hope she treats you kindly and I look forward to seeing more.

    Needs big brake vents and bonnet vents (Singular Motorsports). The latter will evacuate the high pressure out of the engine bay, thus letting more air in through the radiator. They also let heat out from the turbo, and reduce front end lift caused by pressure build up.

  • @garethwillis
    @garethwillis 4 года назад

    Just so you know the loss of brakes was more than likely caused by the brake lines carrying the brake fluid. They get so hit that they reach a point were they can't hold pressure which is why even though you changed the pads you didn't have the braking performance from earlier in the day. Braided hoses are only a few quid and worth every penny, it's something worth considering in the future.

    If you have the tools, you should cut holes above your splitter with ducting towards your front calipers to allow for airflow over the rotors, much better brake cooling. Don’t know if this was something you had done or thought of but just an idea for better cooling of your brakes!

    I'm 99% sure this information you already know, but Singular hood vents, Supermiata QMax coolant reroute, and shrouding around the radiator will work wonders on your underhood temps. Might want to also upgrade the brake fluid. I'm not sure if the standard is the same in Europe but in america 90% of cars come with Dot.3 fluid. We upgrade to Dot.5 to help keep the fluid from boiling. That with a good set of street/track pads and rotors should help out tremendously with your braking.

    I have experienced the same brake issues. In a properly functioning brake system the pad deposits a film on the rotor and actually uses that as the friction surface. When you overheat the pads as such you will get uneven film deposit which leads to gravely feeling and sounding brakes. This also massively reduces braking performance because your pad is just clamping down on the "peaks" of the film rather than full surface area contact. Your problem wasn't actually the pad but the rotor. You have to resurface it or in a pinch drive it very easy to smooth back down the high spots. Overall if you are on the stock rotor size in an NA Miata you will have to upgrade as it can not handle anything near 3x the power you are putting through it. I also think you are crazy to run 20psi on the turbo. I think you will have serious heat extraction issues anything north of 10psi.

    I don't know if this helps. but our race team when we bed the brakes we always do a slow couple of laps on and off the brakes, then bring the car in and let it all cool down. After check the pedal length and bleed the brakes if required. (if brakes aren't bedded properly then it will feel like you have no brakes at all) we race in QLD and Australian Production car series and Bathurst 6 hour at Easter is our big event in a clubsport so brakes are always something we are constantly getting right. I hope this helps and well done mate, you looked quick in the mazzy, you are well on the way, can't wait for more.

    First thing you do for a track car is change the brakes for larger ones, if you do not you will always have brake issues, you will also need to make a vent pipe inside the wheel arch from the front bumper to aid cooling. Trust me ive had an MX5 and know all the issues you will get with tracking them. Need good track tyres also before you even think of anything else. Oh yeah finally a roll cage, my friend broke his back when his MX5 when it flipped over in gravel trap.

    • @horyzengaming3935
      @horyzengaming3935 4 года назад

      @@Jimmy_Broadbent The size of your discs should be 330mm and no less otherwise you will have brake issues all the time. Even a stripped out Mini cooper needs 330mm discs to prevent brake fade just on a trackday. I used Brembo calipers and 330mm discs on my MX5, when summer gets here your brakes are going to cook mate and be 10 times worse. The size of your discs are the most important and you need cross-drilled to dissipate some heat. Just a friendly heads up as i have been racing around tracks for 30 years and seen a lot of accidents and cars written off at the track due to brake issues, don't want it happening to you as i like you and like what you are doing.

    • @mrc7966
      @mrc7966 4 года назад

      @@horyzengaming3935 All Clio Cup racecars (similar weight to MX5) run 280mm non drilled rotors. Pad compound and ducted cooling are what make the difference to heatsoaking and therefore fade. Bigger rotors just mean more unsprung mass. Also, here's some info why cross drilled rotors are obsolete in the modern era:
      At one point in time race cars did have cross drilled rotors, and this is probably where the idea that they offer increased performance came from. But if you look at any serious professional race car today, I would be shocked if you found any cross-drilling.
      Like everything else, there are advantages and disadvantages to drilling and slotting a rotor. Fortunately, technology has progressed so that there is no longer a need to cross dill rotors and therefore, we don’t have to deal with its disadvantages.
      The reason why rotors were drilled in the first place was to relieve the gas that was created when the pad material started to breakdown (burn). Since modern pads don’t gas off any significant amount, this is simply not a concern.
      Many people and advertisements claim that cross drilling helps the rotor cool. I’m sure those little holes do help the rotor cool in some regard (possibly not measurable), but the effect in reality is completely insignificant. Furthermore, any benefit of extra cooling is most likely off set by the reduction of the rotors mass due to the drilling which lowers the overall heat capacity of the rotor.

    • @horyzengaming3935
      @horyzengaming3935 4 года назад

      @@mrc7966 Yes cooling is the main factor to anything that gets hot, bigger brakes discs, pad material, disc material, crossed drilled, grooved, ventilation, what wheels are being used and aerodynamics make all the difference to brake temperatures, its not just one or two that makes the difference. All class orientated vehicles have to use near to stock options so using a class of one vehicle should never be used as a reference for a track car. But i'm pretty sure Jimmy knows all this already so it's no good preaching to the preacher's here.
