Hey dude, Turbo MX5 rusty track danger-weapon wisdom boi here. Before you think about wider tyres and aero, get on track and see how it does. I was fixated on putting ridiculously wide tyres on, splitters, flat floors, wangs..etc but when I got the car to a track and found the limit there were so many other areas that were glaringly in need of work. Firstly, brakes. If you want to run the car for an extended period of time, you need good brakes. This is where the majority of lap time gains will come from, as well as the added bonus of being safer. I currently have a set of standard discs and EBC Yellow pads, that setup is okay but to do anything competitive or for a long time, it needs a better setup. The Wilwood route is common but expensive, there are also some Subaru 4-pot caliper brackets floating around on the internet that are maybe worth a try. It's also 100% worth putting braided brake lines on and a master cylinder brace (sometimes called a brake stopper). That'll harden the pedal up a lot and get rid of the very spongey feel that comes with the standard setup. Next, cooling. Again, if you want to run the car for an extended period of time on track (which you do) you'll need upgraded cooling. Looks like you've got a beefy Japspeed alloy rad which is great, but make sure you work on the front of the car to ensure you're getting the most air though it as possible. I took out a bunch of plate metal from behind the bumper and replaced it with a thin bar to maintain rigidity but allow more air through. Along with that I've 'shaped' (beat the hell out of) the plastic cowling to help force air through the radiator without it getting lost around the sides. As a result my alloy rad gets approx ~30-40% more airflow which is key to helping the car stay cool. With that alone I managed to do 10-15 lap stints at full send without the temp needle even thinking about moving - I have no doubt it could have gone all day without breaking a sweat. Tyres... Width is no where near as important as compound and tyre quality. If you actually think about the difference between a 205 and a 225 section tyre, you're only gaining 20mm of contact patch. That's less than 10% increased contact (which you won't use of at all times) for a big price hike. I run 195/50/15's (as do most MX5's) and you can't beat the price/performance value of the tyres on offer in that range. I used a single set of AD08R for 2019 and they've still got plenty of life left despite having 5+ track day spankings. The grip level of that tyre is perfect for my 250hp power figure, so if you're running closer to 300 it's maybe worth thinking about something a little more racey. The MSA Tyre rankings (1a, 1b, 1c..etc) available in the Time Attack UK Regs are brilliant for comparing the likely performance of tyres. Remember that when you increase tyre grip, you're putting way more load through all of the suspension components and all of the moving parts of your car, so you'd have to ensure everything is polybushed and up to scratch. Finally... Flex. This was the biggest thing that I noticed out on track. I didn't fully appreciate chassis quality until I drove a Ginetta - for a car that only weighs 100kg less than my MX5, and has HALF the power, with harder compound tyres... the laptimes are comparable. This (in my humble and non-professional opinion) is mostly down to chassis quality. Once you approach the limit on track in your 5 you'll find out very quickly that the car you're trusting your life to is about as flexible as a plastic ruler. I have a GCR2 roll bar which helps a little, and if you're planning on putting a full cage (with door bars) in that'll also help - but you absolutely need to think about adding some strengthening bars wherever possible. The handling and 'feel' improvements you'll get from that alone justify the cost, I'm sure I would have knocked 1-2 seconds off a 1 minute lap had my chassis been stiffer last time I was out on track. Hope that helps, always keen to blabber on about my rusty shitbox and have done track days at a variety of different styles of track so happy to answer any other questions!
@@topsu_u I don't think a reroute is needed, there's some evidence on both sides of how much difference it actually makes - the main thing is getting a lot of air into a high capacity radiator. If you do that properly then you shouldn't need much else.
I'd heard about the massive chassis flex in older Mx5s, it's the kind of thing you wouldn't notice much at moderate speeds on the street but definitely on track. I think I remember seeing an MCM video years ago about chassis braces for MX5s, which they said were great.
'Sprints' are basically time attacks so sprint and hill climb series are by far the best to have low risk track/road time! :) Cheapest form of Motorsport as well!
@Swan Connery Don't they have strict regulation when it comes to homologization? I know that the MX5 amateur track series that run around here don't allow any aftermarket modifications. You need to have a stock MX5 and only very specific items are allowed (like brakes and cooling). If you're of excess of 125Hp, you'll get 7,5kg of weight per Hp. If you're over 127Hp, you're banned. I would imagine most amateur series have similar kind of rules to ensure fairness.
Jimmy, I don't know where you are based or which track you plan to visit but I own Frenzy Performance Tuning in Suffolk and specialise in turbo conversions, performance engine building and live mapping... If M-Tech still use Megasquirt based management I'd be more than happy to come along for the day to keep an eye on the health of the car as this is what I have most of my experience installing and tuning. Get good dampers if you haven't already; if you plan on doing hill climb (or similar) events then you'll be driving on a variety of surface qualities, and so being able to adjust the compression setting of the dampers will really help on courses with rougher surfaces. As well as this, because you don't have 4 sets of wheels and a team to change sets during a race, you'll need a versatile set of tyres that will last for a good time, and that can hold their own in the wet. I've heard good things about Bridgestone Potenza RE-71Rs, but tyre choice varies from car to car. Even if you don't make any changes to the car's setup, getting out there and practicing is the most important part. That squeaky clutch reminds me of my old MX6. God, I miss that car something awful. That KL V6 sounded the business. That being said, your MX5 sounds excellent, too. Proper A N G E R Y little engine.
Brakes. Case in point: the time I felt in a hurry going from point A to point B (but was I really is another question entirely) I realized slowing my Altima hefty from 180k to still was impossible already after the second and a half attempt only. So yeah, don't underestimate them, jolly.
This real life content is a nice break from all the sim racing and I definitely don't mind seeing a bit of diversity. I'll be definitely looking forward to seeing more videos with the MX-5. And have fun in Oz, Jimmy!
Gotta take a quick gander at the NASCAR form when climbing in the window. Stand next to the door, swing the near leg up and in, pull the other leg up, sitting on the sill, then slide in feet first.
Really liked this style of a video. I think you should have a camera show the outside of the car as well, maybe just on the windshield. Would give a good view of acceleration and you could show some scenery in the video as well.
If you consider going for wider tire for extra traction but want keep balance, suggest to not think of staggered setup, but up tire width square, fronts aswell. Though there might be some rubbing issues front, so possibly some thicker spacers on steering rack ends to limit max steering angle (and or wheel spacers, but these will increase scrub radius too) may come in handy. If this had been mild boost i'd probably limit to just better compound grippier tires, but i guess with 300bhp it won't hurt going wider too, especially given steep boost power curve. With grippier tires it's much easier/quicker to run into brake limits, so bring also more track oriented pad set to track (high boiling temps fluid of course too), or otherwise your sessions will be very short till you hit fade.
Looking forward to your time attack vids👌🏻 Tyres: Nankang AR1 245/40r15 no question Brakes: ds1.11 pads rbf600 fluid Suspension: BC Racing BR (even better DS version), or maybe Meister R for a mx5 Wing: yes! And lookup ONELAPHEROES on RUclips, they got a 300hp mx5 prepped for track use!

Cheers! (I do have videos covering a lot of finer MX5 details if thats of any help also)
there is a good selection of 245/40r15s out there, do all 4, not just rear (you wont need to handicap yourself with massive understeer), and you wont need it aligned. since you have the flares, the various 15x10 et25 wheels out there will be MINT 👌 MIATA IS ALWAYS THE ANSWER
When I was a little kid we lived in a small town (gravel roads) and one day this guy went whipping around our corner at about 15 mph in an MG... slowly but surely... but then the rear suspension folded in somehow and it tipped over on top of him, he was messed up due to lack of effective rollover protection. My dad and a neighbor got him out of there. So they loaded them into our motorhome and went to the hospital (no ambulances), but the guy died on the way. And that was the last we ever went on holidays in that motorhome! My mom would never ride in it again, too haunted.
Actually without Hans or any neck protection device, stock belts are better on the road because they allow your body to roll one way rather than putting a lot force just on your neck in case of an accident. Good boye jimbo, hope to see more IRL content from you!
Jimmy get a "daw" digital audio workstation (if you don't already have one), there are free ones available, and they're prefetly good, then get some free guitar effect plug-ins. Specifically a Compressor and an EQ, these will allow you easily tailor your audio signal. Really easy and free, look up a few guitar/music channels for "best free DAW's" to get some idea.
I can help you out. For Time Attack and or hill climbing you need a MotorsportUK license for time attack it is inter club, for hill climbing your car will require a national license as the car is over 2.0 with the turbo multiplier, this is a challenge as you need to compete to upgrade. Not sure if you can upgrade via time attack, but possible. The RS interclub license just requires a form to be filled in and a fee, no test. Safety kit wise you need helmet to the current regs, fire resistant gloves and boots and a race suit again to the correct spec. HANS is always a good idea. Car prep is pretty simple, just yellow tape on the negative battery, on off marked on the ignition that’s it for road going and a timing strut for hills and sprints (again the car won’t allow you to do that) You don’t need a cage. Time attack is your best bet to start. Upgrades wise, the brakes first, get a set of pagid discs and a set of Blue Stuff EBC pads, this is easily good enough for a 30min track session, and some DOT 4 fluid. Next will be getting a setup and possibly changing the springs, You’ll be fine!
You should come to Japfest at Silverstone! A very nice show for the day and cheap track time (although not much), but it’s a very good day out, I’d recommend it
I can confirm that time attack is great fun. We just have our local oval with a little hairpin extension but it's still enough to get the adrenaline going.
Your car would fit nicely in the Super Touring Under 3.2 liter (STU) Class in SCCA across the pond. Our cars have very similar weight and power. Sweet little car that Miata 😃
I generally think with the way the power delivery is set up in that car that your more likely going to struggle, its almost like you could lose 30-50 bhp by fitting a smaller turbo but be quicker overall on sprints and hill climbs etc. Attempting to be in the power band could be a struggle, getting off the line and out of the corners.
If you ever come up to Scotland there are a few hillclimb tracks like at Doune in Stirling. There's also Forrestburn halfway between Glasgow and Edinburgh and I think Fintray but that's up in Aberdeenshire

Jimmy: So im going to australia
Everybody in Australia: U wut????
Yep. There is an event this week
Beautiful machine you have there Jimmer!
Make sure you prep it Jimmer. So many people do track days with no prep to only get a few laps in before having to trailer it home
Thicc Britt pounds mx5

@@felix-bk7ne Man, that should be a comment on its own 😂😂😂
Really liked this style of a video.
Looking forward to your time attack vids👌🏻
Tyres: Nankang AR1 245/40r15 no question
Brakes: ds1.11 pads rbf600 fluid
Suspension: BC Racing BR (even better DS version), or maybe Meister R for a mx5
Wing: yes!
And lookup ONELAPHEROES on RUclips, they got a 300hp mx5 prepped for track use!
I’m from Brisbane and I’ll be at the Sydney FIAGTC and can’t wait. Hopefully I can see ya Jimmer! Well most likely I will just from a far
😁🏁
I found that rust/dirt patch between the seats mesmorising! What is that? My house mate has an mx5 twenty years ago, I loved how when you put the lights on the popups get in the way of your vision somewhat.
It's old carpet that's kinda stuck on. It's a feature at this point.
@@Jimmy_Broadbent You and your fancy luxury carpeted parcel shelf mx5!
majestic car entry :]
Hi Jimmy. If you haven't yet decided where to get your alignment done, give us a shout. We do full four wheel geometry including for the MX5 restorer and have a track setup loaded on our kit.
Great video Jimmer. Looking forward to seeing it on track :)
Hi Jimmy, I have been racing MX-5's for over 10 years and have my own 300hp turbo car which is pretty quick for what it is, feel free to reach out if you want any ideas, suggestions or tips on what an MX-5 needs to be quick AND reliable. Cheers!
(I do have videos covering a lot of finer MX5 details if thats of any help also)
I would recommend Autotest too. Time attack on car parks. Im very tempted to do it myself.
The 2 camera setup is great, it does make it more interesting indeed.
there is a good selection of 245/40r15s out there, do all 4, not just rear (you wont need to handicap yourself with massive understeer), and you wont need it aligned. since you have the flares, the various 15x10 et25 wheels out there will be MINT 👌
MIATA

ANSWER
The torsen diff from the 94 MX5 with leather interior runs out of revs at around 147mph and is just about perfect for a turbo mx5 on an average track.
Oh Jimmy. Miata girl...she scoot. She scoot very rapid.
Looks like a blast to drive. Enjoy it!
New camera positions work really well, might be cool to have one behind you on the rollcage facing forwards too
AMGERY CUTIE!
I can't wait to see some proper content in this little death box
When I was a little kid we lived in a small town (gravel roads) and one day this guy went whipping around our corner at about 15 mph in an MG... slowly but surely... but then the rear suspension folded in somehow and it tipped over on top of him, he was messed up due to lack of effective rollover protection. My dad and a neighbor got him out of there. So they loaded them into our motorhome and went to the hospital (no ambulances), but the guy died on the way. And that was the last we ever went on holidays in that motorhome! My mom would never ride in it again, too haunted.
Uk Time Attack series is great start. Or any local hillclimb. Javelin Sprint Series is also a good place for new starters.
really like the look of the city
Camera work is great Jimmer! Now just another go pro on the bonnet XD
Next will be getting a setup and possibly changing the springs,
You’ll be fine!
I wouldnt mind some more track jimmy content on the channel, keep it up!
It's great to see you in the Miata! Looking forward to seeing that thing on the track
You should come to Japfest at Silverstone! A very nice show for the day and cheap track time (although not much), but it’s a very good day out, I’d recommend it
Like the additional camera angle, would like a forward facing cam too to get a better idea of the acceleration!
I can confirm that time attack is great fun. We just have our local oval with a little hairpin extension but it's still enough to get the adrenaline going.
Anyone else like the squeaky bits in the car? I think it give it personality. Can’t wait to see what this squeak machine can do on track!
Your car would fit nicely in the Super Touring Under 3.2 liter (STU) Class in SCCA across the pond. Our cars have very similar weight and power. Sweet little car that Miata 😃
4:11 "Can I put a wing on this?"
Microphone and cameras were perfect Jimmer!
Maybe move the 2nd cam to an over-the-shoulder (roll hoop mounted?). Just a thought, great video!
Cool camera setup really liked it
Very good video Jimmy your car is crazy its alot of horsepower in a little thing
If you ever come up to Scotland there are a few hillclimb tracks like at Doune in Stirling. There's also Forrestburn halfway between Glasgow and Edinburgh and I think Fintray but that's up in Aberdeenshire
We need more of this Jim
Love the rl content jimmer. You’re killing it lately!
Miata (mx-5) is always the answer.... woohoo.
Glad you're finally going to run it on track.
Can’t wait to see the 25 bar boost in action
I hope u mean psi, 25 bar of boost will send everything that's in the engine block to the moon and beyond
You how power a car making on 1.5bar of boost having 25 bar your engine would grenade itself as soon as you start it.
@Arnout Buter @Jevon Bigga it was a meme from one of his recent streams (where someone mistakingly read 2.5 bar boost as 25 bar) lol
@@short-circut2262 oh lol!
@@short-circut2262 oh mah bad dude, havent really followed his streams. Not enough time in a day to do that sadly.
Should Check Out Javelin Trackday’s, they do sprints at various circuits/places in the UK, which are basically time attacks
for hillclimbing the "HillClimb UK comunity" group is a useful one to join in terms of info for classes regs ect
Great video Jimmer!
Guys from Project Binky are the guys to check out. Their channel name is Bad Obsession Motorsport, Ask Richard Brunning on twitter he'll sort you out with that.
Also can ask Marty from @MightyCarMods about the mx - 5 or see those videos. He is an expert on this.
Check out Dutch Superlap if you wanna go international. Super fun series, awesome tracks and a very friendly atmosphere!
If you get the opportunity.. try Shellsley Walsh hill climb in Worcestershire. I believe it's the oldest in England and Murray Walker began his commentary career there .. worth a look dude 😊
Hey jimmy you should play Baja: edge of control! It’s super fun and hosts possible 3 hour long races of the Baja 1000 race. I really recommend it
So me and my wife are looking at dream cars and I have always wanted a S2 Lotus w/ the 2zz and a R32 Gtst (i dont want twins plus living in the US, it would last longer with the thicker bore walls) would you think getting a Lotus Elise would be a good car to have in the garage? i think the R32 is beautiful, but would be a pain to have in the US for me right now. just curious of others views.
"I hope you guys can hear me. I've got an external mic on today..." Where would you insert an internal mic?! 😵😋
in the camera/gopro
Sounds awesome Jimmers
I love my stock 1.6 MX5 NB. Power isn't everything.
I prefer the real life content, looking forward to the track videos in this car and getting to know it better.
Damn the production value today is v nice
See this is what puts our Jimbo above all the others. He actually thinks about things like multiple camera angles to give the best viewing experience. Good on you mate, hope ciara doesnt blow down your shed!
Instead of practicing how enter and exit your locked door, you could remove the door card and replace the lock mechanism. There about $25 on ebay or you could go to a pick and pull and get one for about $5.
Jimmy, please come over and see us at BOFI Racing in Huntingdon and we'll take you out in some of our staff cars.
