Great song remember hearing it while dad would bounce me on his knee to the rhythm and mom puttered around the house that was 40(+) yrs ago.... Now my folks are in their 70's and I'm gonna turn 51 next week and this song is just as good now as when i first remember hearing it
I was born in 78 and was trying to sing "Another brink in the wall" before talking properly. I remember vividly the frustration of not being able to be in sync with the lyrics, (it was so obvious in my mind') and I am French Canadian. I think we like or we don't. (or we pretend lol)
Beautiful! And fun lyrics, almost biographical how these artists became great..lovin spoonful, the byrds' mcGuinn, barry mcguire, sebastian, zol, denny, michelke, cass, john phillips..great song
They included the lyrics about mama cass getting fat specifically to make fun of her. One of the guys didn't even want her in the band because of how fat she was. The history of this group is pretty fucked up actually. They were a bunch of spoiled hippies that took advantage of a larger woman's undying devotion to a guy she pined after.
Mama Cass did more Drugs then any of them, when they did this song ,she gained weight because she was getting clean , I feel for her because I know its hard to get clean, its a shame she Died doing it right, when she was laid to rest no drugs were found in her system, well you tried sister R.I.P.
I got off opiates/benzoes in June 2010 after 13yrs of abuse. I ballooned up to 197lbs(from 135lbs) in less than 4mo. My face put on 10lbs it seemed. Mama Cass was Awesome!!
I'm kind of confused why it was said Cass' weight was mentioned in songs. I think he was referring to Creeque Alley that repeats the line "no one's getting fat except Mama Cass," which is then changed to "everybody's getting fat but Mama Cass." CREEQUE ALLEY is the song of how the Mamas and Papas got together. John and Michelle, Denny, and others were trying to break into the rock scene, trying lots of different things and it was very slow going and so they were all broke. Cass, on the other hand, was still a part of a very successful folk band and was making a lot of money gigging with them. So nobody was getting "fat" (making money) but Cass. Cass joined The Mugwumps where she met Denny. But then Denny started getting tuneful with John and Michelle and generating interest (and money) when the San Francisco rock scene took off. The Mugwumps broke up, and then Cass was the one left without a paycheck, so then everybody was getting fat BUT Mama Cass. That is, until Denny brought her into his good thing with John and Michelle Phillips.
When they left the island with the credit card they arrived to Puerto Rico and spent some days in the island barely getting by on the Isla Verde sector.
Always thought the one line in this song that repeated over and over, about "no one's getting fat except Mama Cass" was pretty rude, if not cruel. To be fair, the lyrics should also have included how the guys were shooting up with serious drugs and maybe how Michelle was trying to break a record for one-night-stands with diseased hippies. Now that would have gotten people's attention.
@@chetburnes3776 it's nice to know that Cass didn't mind, and in fact "she loved it"; She was special and seems to me to be well resolved, a beautiful and talented woman, which seems to me to be the most important thing.
I concur. If John didn't have anything nice to say, he should have stuck his head back in the toilet where it belonged. Incestuous child fucker prejudiced against fat people. Cass Elliot was more talented than anyone in that group.

I was born in 1980 and it realized on me that i identity more with this song and its energy than the music of today. Trippy.

I’m a new fan of their music and it’s so good. just a fun song anyone could sing on karaoke night, but they would probably mumble most of the lyrics 😂

Mcguinn and Mcguire
Couldn't get no higher
But that's what they were aiming at
Great Analogy for the band formations from the mid 60s...you got this band, their precursor the Mugwumps, Lovin Spoonful, the Byrds, etc.
Ron Burgundy highly approves of the flute solo on this jam

Hands down the most talented out of the four! How they treated her shame on them! Rip mama cass 😢🖤

👊🏾😎👍🏼
John is the one who didn't want Cass because her weight would wreck their "image". Glad he lost out on that one. Cass was everything to that group!

John was such a a terrible father. Wrote some great songs though.

The ending to the 1970 Motion Picture ' Beneath The Planet Of The Apes '
It's "Zal" (Zalman Yanovsky) not "Zol".

Mugwumps?
A short-lived pre-M&P group.
@@johnkennell2341 Oh.
nice song but the "no one's getting fat, except mama cass" part bothers me
There is a clip of Michelle talking about this and she says CASS loved it. If she was good with it, I can be, also.

It bothered me too, that is until I learned te story behind it. See my reply. "getting fat" was actually about who was making money.
