- One of the best Sixties groups to come out of the USA, their shooting star was all too brief in the pop charts. This song, their second UK chart entry, peaked at #3 in 1966. Denny Doherty, who takes lead vocals here, hated the song and was surprised when it became a big hit. Mama Cass and Michelle Phillips didn't like the song either, and even John Phillips (who wrote it) admitted he didn't really know what the song was about.
I am 69.i am an old man now! But that song will never get old!!! And Cass Elliot what a voice!!! Denis from.France...
I like to listen to this song on Monday to make me feel better
I do as well, without fail, it always helps to keep up the positive vibes
Yup! I listened today, and it helped.
Same here
While it's an upbeat sounding song, aren't they talking about how Monday morning didn't prepare them for coming home to find their partner gone on Monday night?
Johnny Repine yup. Her name is Monday and it’s Monday morning and while he has fallen in Love with her she’s just used him as another weekend affair. And she’ll be perhaps leaving again. He never knows off she’s staying or just visiting. It’s a classic case of an unfortunate one-sided live affair. He/She loves Her/Him and yet the love isn’t returned - the other party is only in the relationship for the entertainment. Sad but often true in many wrong reason relationships.
A song that rings in my ears even after 60 years.Yes I am indeed old,but the song isn’t.
I don't think the song will ever grow old.

It just blows my mind that their voices work SO well together, such an amazing sound and harmony... close my eyes, and lay back listening to it.. Just amazing... nothing else like it. Just wish I was around to enjoy it when it was 'happening'...
I was there at the time .... and glad that I was.
@@sunryse111 yea I only missed by a few yrs :(
@@sunryse111 I'm told that people who remember the '60's weren't there.......
#virtual bird it was an awesome time to be sure. The only fear in life for a young person at that time was the draft and the Vietnam War. That’s what prompted a lot of this kind of action in true song. Young people often sought the wrong answers abs made the wrong choices rather than look for absolute values.
I first heard this song when I watched the documentary ‘Echo in the Canyon.’
Cass’ voice always shown through in their music.
Yes, she had the stronger voice. But "Mitchy" could sing very well - it's her voice you hear mostly on "Dedicated to the One I Love".
Shone*
Yes.she was truly groovy and a kind, gentle, loving soul.r.i.p Cass, you are missed but never forgotten.
Actually Michelle is doing the high harmony on this song
I think this is their best song. The composition and harmonies are beautiful. It really moves me. And John Phillips' voice is fantastic.
One of the defining songs of my youth.
This song reminds me of the times when my Mom was still with us, how we use to play it and sing a long with it.
yes this sing reminds me of my young years of my folks I miss these times

Sorry for your loss, but is Monday again hope you are well .
I always have mixed emotions when I listen to these old songs. I am an Indonesian but was brought brought up in the U.S.A. during the Mamas and Papas era. Such sweet memories of an unforgettable childhood
Amen.
This is one of those songs that touch the soul and keep one going.
Love this Love Dennis Doherty he is one of the founding members of this group and he is from Halifax Nova Scotia so proud
It is a Monday during the Corona virus and I needed to hear this song. Stay safe everyone!
Thank you Susan. We're self-isolating here, but running low on most food items.

The great Cass was good on Monday and every other day..... her voice was fantastic all the time 24/7
Such a beautiful song....Thanks from Italy....RIP John Phillips, Denny Doherty, Cass Elliot
When I worked at Safeway, this song would play like 5 times a day. I hated it for so long, but now that Safeway is about 10 years behind me, this song reminds me of easier times.
If your time there was after Sobeys took over, you have my condolences. If before, you have may no idea how bad a store can be, 'cause Safeway was one of the good ones. ;)
I remember one night in college, just over 10 years ago, I was at Waffle House just off campus. They still had a jukebox with 45s, so I popped some quarters in it. This was among the songs I chose. Y’all, the sound of this song from that 45 in Waffle House was magic. Lol
The crackle of that vinyl, the grease smudges everywhere, the aroma of hot coffee, eggs & flapjacks, waitresses tearing off the receipts from their pads, some old guy mumbling to himself while another is passed out. Filmmakers live for capturing those real life moments. Americana right there.
aint seen a jukebox in years
@@SpiritusMundi4EVER beautifully put. That's the America I miss. I am 37 years old but I remember the tailend of the days when that type of scenario was commonplace. Now it would be a novelty
@@briangriffith3985 Waffle House still has jukeboxes in thier restaurants but they are all digital, the music is streamed from the internet, don't even have CDs
Totally
Monday can be hectic, but I begin with Mass and ask God to bless the week. Sunday is different because it is more peaceful, less hectic.
Friday morning, please don't go away...
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Excellent group. I always loved their stuff. Denny Doherty was from Halifax, Nova Scotia.
No shame in that, Laurie - everyone's gotta come from somewhere! 😁 Have a good day, my friend.
It is Monday morning and I am happy to hear it again after so many years.(from Hungary🇭🇺)
I am glad you found it here on my sunryse channel, Aniko.
@@sunryse111 When it was a hit a long time ago, it was not easy for me to understand the lyrics. Now at last I can read the what it is all about.

Kinda like. Oh okay- yeah I can dig that✌
I've been practicing this. The progressive changes in octaves by themselves, are genius.
This song reminds me of just how jaded and blank young'uns are these days.
God how i miss the 60s on the Sunset Strip!!!
As much as I can't say I've ever seen the Strip in the 60's or otherwise I did love 77 Sunset Strip
w/ E. Burns & his Hair , Hot Rod & Girls ( Not necessarily in that order)
@@drewsagar2634 I have written to various people, like the free TV channels that play old shows, to ask them why can't they air reruns of 77 Sunset Strip? I'd much rather see a great show like 77 Sunset Strip than the worn out reruns of MASH. I have also suggested someone make a show or youtube video featuring the cars from 77 Sunset Strip. Ford sponsored the show, and a lot of new Fords and Mercurys showed up in the parking lot of Dino's lounge. Very rare car, which appeared at a Ford dealership in Omaha, Benson suburb. It was a full sized T Bird, probably a 60 - 64 model ? It was a dark pink, with two 427 engines. The car was made for Kookie, (Ed Burns), and was put on the circuit to Ford dealers to bring people into the showroom. One car on the circuit was an autonomous vehicle, hand grip steering wheel for when a driver was driving the car.
This song is from way back in the days of good music. It's one of a kind song since it was recorded and hit the radio airwaves then. I just went down memory lane with it earlier this Monday morning.
Beautifull voices
Monday morning is a beautiful time but it doesn’t promise that Monday evening will also be beautiful. In fact, in this song it turns bad because a lover leaves unexpectedly, without a warning.
“Monday morning” could mean any beautiful time or circumstance. It is nice in the beginning but doesn’t warn us about the evening where a surprising disappointment may await us. This is why the group didn’t like this song: it is a sad premise that eerily prophesied their “Monday evening,” which would include tragedy. It resonates on deep levels with the human race that often sees unforeseen disappointments after a beautiful beginning. However, it is magical and memorable in its sound. It brings me back to my childhood in the 1960’s, my “Monday morning” that was so good to me.
Thank you for that lovely, sensitive analysis of John Phillips' lyrics. You imply that your "Monday Morning" - your childhood in the Sixties - has also led to unforeseen disappointments, and maybe even tragedies. I hope this has not been the case for you, my friend.
@@sunryse111 Yes, my life has seen some sobering moments that I didn't foresee as a child but God's blessing on my life has eclipsed any drama by far. It's all good and I'm immensely content and happy. It is well with my soul. Thank you.
The rapture
Funny how some groups will have a hit, and really not like it. Barbra Ann by the Beach Boys is really a good song that the group didn't take very seriously, goofing their way through the song, but it still came out pretty good.
I regret at how distasteful one M & P's appearances was, where Michelle Phillips held a banana during a song and would eat it. If they had a good manager, he should of told them how bad that looks. That video is on youtube. Monday Monday may be their greatest hit, basically simple but done so well.
When I used go to work I hate Mondays but I love this song ever since. Great tune though. Now I am retired from work, I never care what day it is. But I still dig this song. RIP Mama Cass.
There is no safe place except in the arms of God( Our Father in Heaven ).

I was fifteen all my friends and I used to dance when Monday, Monday was playing. 53 years ago. So happy weekends.
Happy memories!
I Brazilian and I get a huge love to "The mamas and The papas"
One of the best groups of the sixties I always liked their songs. This one is special to me as I was twenty and studying in the University then. It brings to me so many remembrances of my student days and how I lived then whenever I hear it again. And reading the quotes above I find them rather amusing as it is great song which really has a message and hits the point.
Hermosa canción, que hace recordar tiempos que no volverán ☹️😪
Takes me back to college days and young love.
Una canción muy completa y nostálgica, muy bella canción ❤
I loved this song! This is how I feel every Monday mornings. Haha

I was 12 yrs. old when this came out! I love it! It was a good time back then! No stress! No worries!
Yes, I remember it well.
Well you were only 12 how much stress does a 12 year old have? Maybe if you were 17 18 19 20 21 22. Very troubling times indeed.
@@joeearley3351 It depends where you were born too, Joe. Not everybody grew up in a crazy mixed-up world.
@@joeearley3351a lot of 12 year olds have a LOT of stress just from the family they live in. The later years in college were more carefree. And my brother served in Vietnam.
