That forehand down match point by Garrison might be the most important shot in tennis history. If she missed that Seles wins and plays Graf in the semis. Remember Garrison pulled off the huge upset of Graf in the semis. Graf obviously slaughters Seles in the semis, like their other 3 matches on grass, probably wins 6-1, 6-1 or something like that. Then it is a Graf-Navratilova final. Despite that Graf was playing much poorer than 88 and 89 and Navratilova much better, Graf probably wins. Graf is tied for the Wimbledon record with both at 8, or holds it outright since she probably wins atleast 1 of 94, 98, 99 with increased confidence of a longer Wimbledon streak.

Zina Garrison was a great tennis player. She should have won more. I get the sense that she just didn't have the off-court support she needed to be consistently strong mentally on the court. That game, the one that I have just watched, could win anywhere. My only concern was that it took her a while to warm up, AND her first serve percentage seemed low. Otherwise, I know that she won a good deal, just the same I think she could have won more, including a major.
I've thought the same. She was always one of my favorites. How many women can say they've beaten Navratilova, Evert, Graf, Seles, and Sanchez-Vicario all at majors? Insane.
Zina was such a talented player she is a pioneer too. Zina came up in the 1980s with Lori McNeil they both reached the top in women tennis. Zina unfortunately was small people forget she is only 5 foot 4. Her issue was Zina didn't have a big weapon. But she did everything well.
@@JordanjamesX I disagree about the weapon. Her volleys were spectacular! So were her backhand slice and her court craft. Also, her forehand had quite a bit of thump and depth when she swung out. For sure a pioneer.

it was the best match I ever saw Zina Garrison play, in short......better than her match against Martina at the US Open in '88...way better than the match against Evert, in her last match in '89..and to me, she even played better than the semifinal she won over Graf, in the same tournament. I remember watching this match from start to finish. And many folks may not know or remember how much of an emotional wreck Garrison was, very early in her career. She would, literally, start crying...sometimes on the court and sometimes, in between games. But from the start of this match, I NEVER saw her so locked in.
I remember her crying losing to Wade in 84 Wimbledon and beating Evert in 89 but that was after She played great here, but her FINALLY beating Martina in 88, after blowing 6 match points , up 5-0 in second set and actually WINNING, changed her direction and she had her greatest year in 89 finishing #4 that year
Seles shows her adorable teenager figure, the image we all came to miss so poignantly after her Hamburg disaster and her self-destructive junk food binging. Here, carrying no extra weight, all wiry muscles, we can see her, a very rare sight, in full sprint from corner to corner, and back again, at a time when she was the fastest. Simona Halep would have been proud of her. Seles gives us a good demonstration that she can very efficiently use her one-handed forehand on very wide balls when she needs to stretch to the extreme and even get spectacular winners in the left corner with it. I personally do not like Garrison's serve motion, but she produces good speed with her wrist snap. Her stance for receiving serve is most peculiar. She is one of the last users of the sliced backhand, but her volleying is not regular and solid enough when she has to control Seles's heavy topspin shots. However, Seles made too many unforced errors, while Garrison made some great shots, including short crosscourt backhands, for instance at 2:16:47. So kudos are deserved for her getting the better over Monica Seles, who, already at age 16, was ranked No. 3 in the world. This was for Garrison a win to savor and cherish as a special achievement that only top players could claim. Zina Garrison went on to beat Steffi Graf in the semi-finals, and lose to Martina Navratilova in the final, in a settlement of accounts among the last sliced-backhand artists.
