These two changed the game more than any two players ever, IMO (they would've still been elite in the big babe era 10-15 years later, but nobody from the 70s or even 80s would've been able to compete with them in the 90s). They would've continued producing classic matches at RG, clay was definitely the surface on which they were most evenly matched (neither were at their peak in 92 and they still gave us the greatest final ever). Also appreciate how this RG final is like the one Graf/Seles matchup where the comment section isn't (usually) just littered with their stans foolishly arguing one was far superior to the other; they both finish with around 18-20 slams in an ideal world (yes, the math checks out) but I guess we'll never know.
Peak Navratilova was far better than peak Seles. Steffi always said that the only player she was able to lose even in peak form was Martina Navratilova. And that Martina was her best opponent ever.

Monica Seles was actually only 19 when stabbed. Maybe hadn't even reached her peak. In a normal career span and staying motivated, she would have had plenty of time to win a Wimbledon singles title.
True! Monica Seles was the clear #1 at the time of stabbing (defending champion at 3 slams) and that Steffi was a clear #2 (W champ plus runner-up at the Australian and French). Monica was #1 and had been for 2 years before the stabbing. Whether Steffi or her fans liked it or not, the stabbing made her the top player!

The monster accomplished all that he could have ever hoped for in the stabbing and more with very little downside risk. He got off legally .. and yet he took the #1 ranking and the tremendous momentum away from Seles.

Graf really played in a perfect era for her. She came in while Martina and Evert were at the end of their career and were about to retire. Then Seles came around and were winning GS back to back, but soon she was stabbed and could never fully recovered. Hence, no rivals for a long long period. Once the WIlliams sisters arrived, Graf retired early. She probably did not want to battle against Serena, Venus, Davenport, and even Hingis. To that I really admire Seles kept playing for more years, for the love of the sport I think.
Monica Seles is renowned for her use of a double-handed grip on both her forehand and backhand shots, a technique she employed for the majority of her shots. However, determining her dominant hand solely based on her gameplay can be challenging. Without observing her serve, it's difficult to definitively classify her as either left- or right-handed.

@@DaveOwen-vn6ie You obviously have never played sports. Our bodies are developing until about the age of twenty two and also there is an experience factor that also comes into play. Have you ever noticed an announcer saying that a person is the youngest to win a particular title? That is the reason why it is so impressive. There is a big difference between a nineteen year old and a twenty three year old.
@toms9864 For me, Jennifer Capriati was the best but sadly she was just to young and it proved to much, to soon. Despite her ending up with 3x majors, it's definitely a case of What If .....? And such a shame we were denied a Seles/Graf/Capriati rivalry. Without doubt, Seles would have won more than the 9 majors she ended up with and it would very likely have impacted Graf's total but we will never know and the same applies to Capriati - had she not gone off the rails and stopped playing, and instead continued on the trajectory she started at age 13 then she very well would have beaten both Graf & Seles and won more than the 3 she won
There are two Graf matches that I can't watch to the end: her 1999 Wimbledon loss to Davenport and this one. Regarding the former, I think it has something to do with not wanting to see my favourite player end her career with a loss. I still wish she could have completed the back-to-back slams. With the latter, I just feel like she should have won this match, but the loss speaks to a certain stubbornness in her game, an unwillingness to adapt to the Seles challenge that cost her the match. Still, even though I can't watch it right to the end, both players are a marvel to watch.

Monica was mentally unbreakable...even with the audience clearly on Steffi's side. Monica was a natural fighter and Steffi was clueless how to break her.
@@andrews6341 errors are drawn. Seles was pressuring her like hell through the whole match and punished every short ball with a winner while bringing a lot of balls back. Graf had to go for a lot of winners and this produced a lot of errors in the process. Actually Seles was leading in the third by a significant margin and could have won 6-3 had she converted any of the match points she got.
Monica Seles was playing two hands on both sides and, when she had to, one hand on both side also. Is this unique in tennis? I read that when she return 2-3 years after her so tragic aggression, they others players, except Sabatini, insisted that she started with 0 point.
Regarding the come back after stabbing, there was a real big discussion in the WTA Circus 94 and 95, should Seles be getting her points back or not. And they voted for it, the majority was in favor of Seles, but a lot of the women players did not wanted to grant her anything. They found a solution. Seles was number 1 player, and she had the same points as Graf for 1 year. And believe it or not, Seles had only cero points, the other points she got was virtually only to grant her access to the big Turnaments and not facing to beg to access any tournaments. Graf voted for Seles to get her points back, obviously otherwise she would be the b i t c h. There was also a controversy which came out years later, when Seles was stabbed Graf visited Seles in the Hospital and wished her a lot of luck to get healthy and suddenly said "oh I have to go to the finals, bye..." lol. Don´t get me wrong, but nowadays it sounds so ridiculous to hear that. The best supporter of all time was Martina Navratilova, who always visited Monica Seles. She never gave up, and I admire her for that to bring Monica Seles to Tennis back. I saw the Monica before stabbing, I saw Monica playing one day before the stabbing live in action in Hamburg, and then I just heard the stabbing and my heart hurt so much. And I was so happy to see her afterwards when she won again Australian Open...
Graf can be hard-headed at times. This is one match where she could have varied her match play so much more, making Seles run from end to end, from front to back, with more dropshots just to keep Seles from any rhythm. but she allowed herself to play the Seles game and therefore lost, even though playing that game it was still a very close match....
Graf was "heiress apparent" to Seles? What a joke!!! Seles may have been Queen of Roland Garros 1990-1992, but she NEVER won Wimbledon where Graf beat her comprehensively. Clay was always going to give Seles some advantage, but on the faster grass courts she had NO CHANCE against Graf, who won 7 titles there. Some people in this thread consider her their "real and true GOAT": absolutely delusional. And of course, they have a convenient excuse: the "stabbing". Bull. Seles took over two years to get over her "trauma"; but that was all her decision. Final head to head: 10-5, in favor of Graf, who had to struggle through her own issues but who resolutely refused to play the "victim card."
Graff was a great player but Seles was just BETTER and mentally stronger. Graff won about half her slams after the stabbing, when it looked like she was just going to win W from then on..............

@@carrerau7138 Their respective rivalries suggest otherwise. Both Graf and Seles are worlds above Martina.
@@thb1091 That is nonsense and you know it.
Navratilova in 1983/84 won 6 slams (incl. 2 Wimbledons; 4 wins against Evert). Martina was 164-3 win/loss.
Steffi in 1988/89 won 7 slams (incl. 2 Wimbledons; 3 wins against Navratilova). Steffi was 159-5 win/loss. Martina still had 2 of her 7 best years in 1988/89.
Seles in 1991/92 won 6 slams (no Wimbledons; 1-1 in finals vs. Steffi). Seles was 144-11 win/loss. Steffi had 2 of her 6 worst years in 1991//92.
At age 34-36 Navratilova beat #1 Seles 4 times.
Even in 1988/89 Navratilova was better than Seles ever was. Ask Steffi Graf.
Dammit! Some great tennis even back in the day. Graf moved the court like a panther..Seles looked a bit slow but she was not. What a great backhand she had. I have never seen a double handed forehand dropshot before👍
One of the best Selesh vs Graff matches of the previous era 😮☝️🙄👏👌☝️
Congrats Monica. You deserved the triumph.
The best match of woman's tennis monica seles vs Steffi graf
この試合と1993年全豪決勝戦は、セレシュとグラフの両者譲らず女王対女王の意地と意地のぶつかり合いでした!!😊 1995年の全米決勝戦もね😉❤️🎵
More than a sporting duel, it was a duel to the death. I had never seen Graf talk so much and gesticulate and celebrate the points as if they were the game. and the face when receiving the trophy... what a shame that these duels were cut short by the fateful attack against them. the best women's final in history
And no one complained when graf did that or talked about her loud grunts when she hit the ball. They only do that when Serena does it.
Awesome work thanks.
Seles will always be the GOAT. No matter who wons how many? The way she was, she is the best ever. Noone has ever reached her peak !!

Superbe match et je suis très content que ce soit Monica SELES qui ait remporté le match.
Monica Seles: the only lady that had 2 handed backhand and forehand. She truly aged like fine wine. Such a beautiful lady! ❤
Love Seles too. But there was at least one other with 2 hands on both sides... Marion Bartoli

THis is the first tennis match i ever watched! And to this day the best female match of all time! Seles was brilliant! 6 Slams before she was 19!!! Beating Graf 4 times! The GOAT in my book ... she suffered the biggest injustice in the history of the sport I!! Graf wouldnt stand a chance if Seles was allowed to continue .... Grafs lunatic fan, the German guy who tried to kill her by the way didnt even do one day in jail ... Graf took advantage of that attack ... there is no way she would have 22 slams if Seles was not stoped so brutally ...
Seles should be given a special award by the tennis association
Seles tenía una fuerza impresionante. Era débil para correr y más si el match era largo. Una de las primeras jugadoras con fuerza en los golpes de fondo de cancha .
❤❤❤❤❤ I love them both n this Girl Monica was just a great Athelete, they both has shown the World the meaning of Athletics ❤
Despite Graf is an amazing champion and tennis legend, she can’t be considered as the Goat. I have great respect for her, but ignoring that the ignoble stabbing, horribly suffered by Seles, helped tremendously Graf in achieving her tennis records, even if unintentionally, it’s like ignoring the existence of the force of gravity on Earth.
the goat is based on numbers and is measurable- 22 slams. Its not based on your opinion of what could have been.
@@user-be5qg7mr1s History will look at it differently! And Serena is the current GOAT and not Graf! Can't the DENY the FACT on how the stabbing of the true#1 player benefitted the #2 player! And to make it worst, the evil act was committed by a fan of Grafs!
Seles was clearly superior to Graf. But Graf fans ( those fanatical ones) hate to admit the truth on how much Graf's career enormously benefitted from the Gunther Parche madness.
losing 5-10 H2H is " clearly superior" and 4-6 before the stabbing. You got anything else beside sounding like pouty 10 year old? @@showtell8905
@@user-be5qg7mr1s 4 to 6 before the stabbing but 3 of those Graf wins were against a 14 -15 year old Rookie Seles! 😂The real story was how Seles quickly turned it around and had a 3-1 winning record against Graf in the MAJORS where it mattered most! 10 slams for Seles vs 2 slams for Graf during the period prior to the stabbing!
Monica Seles best player in the world! ❤Ich liebe ihr beeindruckendes Spiel mit der Doppelvorhand. Das höchste Mathematik wie sie die Bälle platzieren konnte!
An iconic rivalry... A heartbreaking end ... Seles was on her way to complete domination, if not for that incident she'd easily have surpassed Graf and been the 🐐 of that generation of women's tennis.
You can’t really be considered GOAT without a Wimbledon title...she was able to make it past the quarterfinals only once in her career...
@@franciscolaprida2133 Seles reached the Wimbledon final in '92. She was only 20 when the stabbing occurred, she had 6-7 years to win a Wimbledon, and she had enough time to achieve it.
@@showtell8905 Totally agree, one of the most tragic events in sports.
Seles, the BEST female player ever! Just imagine what she would have accomplished without that stabbing 👍😍👌
2:13 a forehand winner down the line from above his head with an open grip, astonishing
TRAGICALLY, the crazy German fan made the correct decision in terms of accomplishing what he wanted to. The monster accomplished all that he could have ever hoped for in the stabbing and more with very little downside risk. He got off legally .. and yet he took the #1 ranking and the tremendous momentum away from Seles.
Yup. And people who say Seles was on the decline already should look at her late 92 early 93 stats. 1 loss in 6 months (in the 3rd set breaker vs GOAT Navratilova) after 34 straight wins that included 2 slams and the YEC
Monica Seles would have been the greatest female tennis player if it wasn't for that crazy fan.
WOW Seles was a machine! How many balls does she make!!? While hitting as hard as she can!! Even when it looks deep it STILL goes in. wow!
other obsvervations. Graf is a much faster runner hey. Why did Graf and Becker have the same ball toss? same german coach? Also, Graf hits her forehand almost behind her. never liked that. but whoa easy power! amazing . (lower string tension? how!!!??)
Siempre lamentaremos a Seles: de juego tan vivaz e ingenioso, de paciencia y tenacidad, de hermosura técnica... se perdió demasiado allí y sin embargo lo que hizo fue oro
Monica Seles, 8 Grand Slams before 20
And three more chances before her birthday. Probably would have had 9 or 10 by her 20th.
No one other than Graf could have stretched Seles to 8-10 in the third set that day.
No one other than Seles could have survived Graf’s comeback that day.
Imagine if Seles is not a victim of stab fan..
How old (or young, really) was she when she came back on tour? And for how many more years did she play?
@@christiangonzales3903 correct me if im wrong but took 2-3 years for her to comeback on tour and she never be the same again.

Cuanto me hubiera gustado verlo ,para callar muchas bocas ,que piensan que Seles hubiera ganado todo .Ojalá no hubiera sucedido .Están dando por saco muchos años ya con el tema.
A truly great final .
Super Human effort on both players in this match. Doesnt get better than this. Nadal vs Fed like.
That slice is a killer shot.
Monica ❤
Storic final that no one will forget! I miss Monica and Steffi.
🎾👌💙 revoir ces moments de Roland , que ça fait du bien 😅
Listen, Graf was great but her career and titles were impacted by Seles getting stabbed, as Seles was starting to become dominant!

BTW, which #1 player has the worst H2H record against any opponent in the history of the WTA?
Take a guess, boy…. 🤣
I love how an 18 year old Seles beat 22 year old Graf.
Why? What does a 4 year age gap have to do with anything?
@@DaveOwen-vn6ie You obviously have never played sports. Our bodies are developing until about the age of twenty two and also there is an experience factor that also comes into play. Have you ever noticed an announcer saying that a person is the youngest to win a particular title? That is the reason why it is so impressive. There is a big difference between a nineteen year old and a twenty three year old.
So you must really LOVE Martina Hingis then? After all, she was beating everyone at 16/17 years old
@@DaveOwen-vn6ie Yes, I am very impressed with Martina Hingis and that is one of the reasons.
@toms9864
For me, Jennifer Capriati was the best but sadly she was just to young and it proved to much, to soon.
Great video and would be so great to see a highlight video of the same year's semi-final match between Sabatini and Seles 🤩
Love love love both Steffi and Monica. Amazing players, amazing era.
I Would rather watch Seles/Graf--Evert/Navratilova any Day Over Anything out there Today. Seles and Evert were True Masters

Not Steffi's best day with a few too many mistakes, but that and the intensity made it one of the best finals ever. Seles was brilliant that day, but a few weeks later, on a quicker surface, she was absolutely demolished by Graf.
these two certainly were not pushers unlike the WTA today
What a match, in the end it was Graff's single BH that wilted under the pressure of Monica's double handed BH and FH !
The nightmare of Graff! I love Monica!
If Seles was not stabbed, Graf wouldn’t have 22 slams, just saying. I know it, you know all know it, dogs and cats know it.

Seles top five player of all times.
Monica Seles est réellement exceptionnelle. Steffi Graf s'est encore améliorée en frappant son revers lifté et a fait des ravages avec pour la suite de sa carrière et a construit un palmarès historique.
Monica was mentally unbreakable...even with the audience clearly on Steffi's side. Monica was a natural fighter and Steffi was clueless how to break her.
Yes. In similar conditions both Sanchez and Hingis crumbled under pressure. Seles stood firm.
Graf should have won that match , she made far too many errors. If she cut them down she would have the last two sets easily.
Monica Seles is GOAT in Tennis History
Monica Seles was playing two hands on both sides and, when she had to, one hand on both side also. Is this unique in tennis?
I read that when she return 2-3 years after her so tragic aggression, they others players, except Sabatini, insisted that she started with 0 point.
Its is but they are some players that do it such as bartoli or hseih su wei
They all hated Seles out of pure jealousy.
Just wonderful
Graff was a great player but Seles was just BETTER and mentally stronger. Graff won about half her slams after the stabbing, when it looked like she was just going to win W from then on..............
We all remember fondly how mentally strong Seles was after that unfortunate stabbing incident.
Steffi would have played again within a few weeks!

@@showtell8905 Speaking of minor stab wounds (which seem to fascinate losers so much) - Steffi would have played again within a few weeks. @@carrerau7138 Yes, but since Graff couldn't do it on the court, Parshe had to do it with a knife.🤣🤣🤣
One of the, if not the best women's match ever played. Steffi and Monica raised the bar so high and pushed each other to their respective best levels. Steffi' serve, forehand and nerve really let her down in this match. In the important moments she became too tentative (understandable as she was coming off a slum in form), where in the important moment Seles was rock solid. Monica's mental toughness was crazy. Very much Nadal like. The faster surfaces favored Steffi vs the slower surfaces which favored Monica as it allowed her more time to setup behind the ball. This was sadly a rivalry which was cut way too short too early
Monica was fast around the court back then.Graf was the better mover but seles was no slouch.
Thanks. But to get the full flavour of this masterpiece, you need to see the ENTIRE match. Cheers.
