    PertSnergleman's Review:
    -------------------------------------------
"No discussion of Monica Seles’s unique attributes and playing style could be complete without mention of her infamous grunt.
Contemporary tennis players all have variants of a basic exhaling mechanism when they hit the ball. Commentators and sports doctors debate over the value of grunting, weighing the benefits in timing it confers versus the wasted physical exertion in doing so.
For many players though, grunting is not even a question of choice, yet followers of tennis agree that it was Seles’ grunt that set the yardstick by which all others would or should be measured against... Seles was an equal opportunity grunter- her cries rang across the court regardless of whether she was hitting a thundering overhead, or a feathery drop shot.
During Monica’s run to the Wimbledon final in 1992, tabloids continually jeered her grunt. They started with the witty, dubbing her “Moan-ica”, and then went to the outright mean, demanding on tabloid covers that she “Stop That Grunt!”.
Public teasing turned into professional controversy when numerous opponents complained that Seles’ grunts were actively distracting and conferred an unfair advantage. Martina Navratilova, a respected player and an elder stateswoman of the game, went on the record saying that the screaming was so bad that she could not hear the ball come off of Seles’s racquet, slowing her own reaction time.
Whether opponents’ complaints about Seles’ excessive grunting were products of passive frustration at being unable to beat her on the court, a reaction against a perceived unfeminine approach she took to the game, or a valid complaint against self-serving gamesmanship, Seles’s grunting became part of her legacy as much as her "breathtakingly natural talent."
    Enjoy!

That is rare and was wonderful. But although Graf has always been my favorite, even I must admit that Monica might have surpassed Margaret Court if she had not been stabbed by a Graf fan in 1993. Monica's greatest foe was the grass at Wimbledon which is why she never won there, but in 1993 or 94 she probably would have. This was a great rivalry and might have been a greater one than the Chrissie/Martina rivalry. My other regret is that Seles's dad referred to Steffi as Knife Number One after his daughter was so brutally sidelined.

Hopefully one day the comments for a Graf/Seles match will be just be respectful for both players! They are both legends of the game - a potential rivalry that could have been the greatest, horribly stopped when it was just getting going, we just have 15 matches to enjoy and appreciate, they really could bring out the best in each other, some amazing points in this match.

hill 42 hi hill 42, thanks for your great, insightful and knowledgeable comment. I totally agree with your analysis of the legendary Seles vs. Graf rivalry. What people tend to forget over the last 30 years is what Monica delivered to the WTA and global sport at the time...
We had seen the awesome Evert vs. Navratilova rivalry for 10+ years before Steffi exploded into the game around 1986. Steffi was young, German and Uber-talented. She blitzed both old girls and quickly smashed her way into the undisputed #1 spot. The performance of Graf in 87 88 89 was astonishing.
Nobody outside of the Bolletieri Academy had any idea Monica was about to hit the circuit... just ask Andre and Jim, they were there.
To think that after all of Graf’s legendary success and super-talent that by the time 1993 came around she was only 22 years old with 11 Grand Slams - Steffi had turned pro in 1984... but then Monica Seles, by 1993 she was just 19 years old and had won 8 Grand Slams - Monica turned pro in 1989...
You can see where this is going if the Hamburg incident never occurred... thanks again for your terrific comment hill 42. Enjoy!

@@hill4252 yes, I agree... my point is not "what could Monica have achieved..." my only point (and the only relevant point of discussion) is Monica was every bit Steffi's equal in ability and natural talent. Both were well above the rest of the competition.
As Monica was taken away from this healthy rivalry as she approached the peak of her abilities, the entire world was denied epic sporting greatness which most definitely would have resulted from the gorgeous competitiveness of these two champions...

    51:21 hammer rallye.
Seles hammered a forehand longline deep that landed close to the baseline which Graf only just returned, seles then absolutely powered a backhand longline that made the reporter shout out "wow" in admiration, Graf got to this one with her phenomenal speed, but her return landed short , so moving in Seles fired another backhand into the cross court corner, but slick Graf had anticipated that shot and was already on her way. Hitting a running forehand passing shot for a winner. Great rallye.

Back in the day when WTA players offered something as equally interesting as ATP.
There was great rivalries and all the top ranked really worked their ass-off to be in the top ten.
Here it is: Ranked no 1 & no. 2 played in the final.
Ranked no. 3 & ranked no. 4 were semifinalists as well.
Unlike nowadays, WTA so called top 10 rank will easily lose in early rounds. Nowadays those who are in top 20-top 10 only need 3-4 okay on court achievements, because the other players will flop out of the blue.
Back in 80's -90's and early 2000's, WTA Girlies had to play their best to defeat their opponents
Nowadays, the WTA girlies just hope that their opponents have bad time & bad mood 🤷🤷

The way Monica handled defeat was exemplary.
1992 was her best year ever and last chance for a calendar Grand Slam sweep of all 4 majors.
Chris Evert always said Kipling's famous poem "If" that hangs in the hallway right before players take to Center Court, those words shaped how she conducted herself as a tennis player.
    The words to "If" are:
"If you can meet with triumph and disaster and treat those two imposters just the same".

I had to laugh a little when Chris Evert said that Steffi's topspin backhand was a new shot that she was working on with Heinz Gunthardt. Steffi hit that backhand aplenty in the 80s. Chris herself played against Steffi where Steffi hit those types of backhands (1986 Hilton Head, 1989 Boca Raton, etc.). She hit it less often though in the 90s after her thumb injury and she was also playing against less net rushers so she didn't really need it.

That was true from about 1990 to 1994 when she started hitting her groundstrokes much closer to her body. But in the late 80s (back when she played Chris herself) and 1995 onwards, Steffi had an amazing down the line slice backhand.

I don’t remember most players trying to hit the ball as hard back then, it’s was more of a strategic game. Today, they hit the ball so hard and I think they are better at striking the ball when the ball is below the net. I think SG would have struggled with her slice backhand.

Such a shame that Monica wasn’t allowed to play her natural game. Even with grass being her worst surface throught all of her career (1 title; Eastbourne 1996) I am sure she would have won Wimbledon at least once and be able to complete the career Grand Slam. She was having incredible results in her only 3rd time competing (4R at 15, QF at 16, and Finalist at 18). It even took Wimbledon’s greatest female player Martina Navratilova (9 titles) to try 5 times before winning it for the first time at 21 years old. Never a player male or female has been more realized at such a young age as Monica was, and I doubt there will ever be. Thank you Monica for all you did for tennis.

I believe Steffi Graf and Seles are a lot like Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. If Monica’s fate were different, I think their rivalry and grand slam count would be similar to Roger and Rafa’s.
If we had to only consider Monica’s years of absence, who would you think would win those GS if Monica was still competing? 🤔 Please be thoughtful in your reply and consider the other competitors who won those Slams were either their shining moment, stronger on that tennis surface, etc. No matter how great a tennis player was, it’s impossible to stay and maintain their peak for a prolonged period of time.
I am a Steffi Graf fan and I believe she is the Greatest of All Time but I do like to understand other tennis fans perspectives. What are your thoughts?

Simona Halep is one answer to the question. She is probably even speedier than Graf was. A good test would be timing the sprint from side to side behind the baseline 2 times, even 3 times in a row if such comparable clips can be found. I am persuaded that Halep is as fast, if not faster than Graf on this specific side-to-side sprint. Another test would be timing on rushing to the net to retrieve a dropshot starting from the baseline. Halep is built like an 100m Olympic sprinter, Graf more like an Olympic decathloner, more of an all-round athlete. On linear speed alone, my money is on Halep, ha, ha. Even without "Grunt Gate" hanging over this match, I still think it was Graf's match to win.
It was just her day, everything seemed to be working for her---close line calls, aces, shots right on the line, etc.
Seles had "Grunt Gate" hanging over her like a dark cloud over Wimbledon ready to burst any minute.
In previous rounds, Seles' opponents Tauziat (Qtrs) and Navratilova (semis) both complained to the umpire numerous times about Monica's grunting. The British press had a field day about Monica's grunting that it dominated all the news headlines.
Even the commentators in the broadcast booth couldn't stop talking about it.
Even a player with Monica's mental strength, it's tough to block it out.
Graf had three weeks to think about the close loss in Paris and how she had her chances in that match.
To her credit she did not exhibit the tentative uncertainty she showed at the French.
In winning or losing, Monica showed the same graceful composure.
Chris Evert always said it's how you handle winning and losing with the same balance that will define you as a player. That's the mark of a champion.

One thing people seem to forget is that Seles' grunting was not warmly received by the tennis community...not just Wimbledon. She already had a reputation of being eccentric and paranoid (ironically), the loud grunts were viewed as a form of gamesmanship meant to throw off her opponents. Whether true or not, this match backfired in the sense that it demonstrated Seles could turn off the grunting at will, like you turn off a light. Of course these days, a lot of players grunt...ever seen a match between Azarenka and Sharapova? It will make your ears bleed.

A strange match in many ways - it'd be interesting to hear both players speak about it now to see what they recall. Steffi playing brilliantly and really exploiting the slightly damp, low bouncing grass. Monica struggling to deal with the conditions and a bit flat. It's often forgotten now, but Monica seemed to have a match every few months when she wasn't at her best and was beaten easily in straight sets. In 1992 alone she lost to Capriati at the Lipton 6-2, 7-6 (double faulted on match point), lost to Sabatini 7-5, 6-4 in Rome, Graf 6-2, 6-1 and Wimbledon and then Navratilova 6-4, 6-2 in Los Angeles

its kind of very sad that those specialists dissappeared. to win on very different surfaces was the greatest challenge for a player to show completion. thats all gone now. nowadays they'e all hittng as hard as possble from the baseline. they play in wimbledon the same as they do at the us open. gone the days when wimbledon was the greatest obstacle for the baseliners to go for the grand slam. gone the days when it was an almost unsolvabe challenge for the clay champs of the french open to add a wimbledon victory. in my eyes, the nowadays players arent even capable anymore of approaching the net, if this would be the logical thing to do. certainly here is a niche for young players to learn to do so - in order to rise the game again on a higher level.

Steffi without doubt had the best sexiest legs in professional sport - then and now. Perfect shape and length. Legendary champion.

Surprised Graf didn't need a license for that forehand. I don't think any player before or after comes close to that!

this is old technique. it is not suited for modern rackets.
      Sampras had simular forehand

Graf played such an astute match here. Didn't try to blast Seles off the ground, but moved her in ungainly positions, kept great depth off her forehand and was willing to move forward whenever possible. Plus she was as fleet footed as ever.

Bud Collins speaks and shouts a little bit too early. He should have known all about Graf’s amazing speed by this time. A lot of shots from Seles will come back when playing Graf, and a lot of the time it will be a winner.
I’m sure Bud was just excited, nothing terribly negative.

Steffi really using the grass to her advantage. Pulling Monica way out wide to her backhand with that sharp angled crosscourt forehand, and using her inside out forehand to batter Monica's forehand. The pace of the court robbing Monica of time in both cases. Steffi's slice also really exploiting Monica's relative weakness on low balls to her forehand. Grass really the perfect surface for Steffi to play Monica on.

"Steffi is playing the last few matches like she won the grand slam."
Chris Evert at 49:00. Sad we couldnt watch how this great rivalery would have emerged. It had just reached a first peak. When they met, it was like before high noon.
