  • Steffi Graf's 22 Grand Slam singles titles put her second on the list of major wins in the female competition since the introduction of the Open Era in 1968 and is third all-time behind Margaret Court (24) and Serena Williams (23).
In 1988, she became the first and only tennis player (male or female) to achieve the Golden Slam by winning all four Grand Slam singles titles and the Olympic gold medal in the same calendar year. Furthermore, she is the only tennis player to have won each Grand Slam tournament at least four times.
Graf was ranked world No. 1 by the WTA for a record 377 total weeks - the longest period for which any player, male or female, has held the number-one ranking since the WTA and the ATP began issuing rankings.

for Bartoli being short in height and fat in weight, she is definitely a better player than Steffi Graf, if you want to think so, remember YOU are brainwashing me by saying Steffi Graf is great . By your own admission, Steffi Graff, needed to be tall and lanky to win grand slams, yet Marion Bartoli who is short and fat and won Wimbledon grand slam which Kim Clijsters never won, how proud is that? Bartoli is a better player just like how she is and was and Steffi Graff is a close eight to Bartoli as per Wimbledon 2013, Bartoli won without dropping a set is a million times better than Kim Clijsters who didn’t even make it to the Final. And Marion Bartoli is already a million times better than Kim Clijsters by winning 1 Wimbledon Grand Slam. So that makes Bartoli a gazillion times better right. All this is not really true and not really false, except in YOUR mind. Steffi Graf used to drop sets.

Marion Bartoli is a way better Tennis player than Steffi Graf.
Marion bartoli had belief in herself that Steffi Graff as a great tennis player doesn't have even being world no.1 to win Wimbledon.
Wimbledon is a grass court tournament and therefore amongst the medium surfaces. which means medium rallies dictated by serve and therefore less exertion of energy during a point and shorter matches in general. you get value for your shot! fat and short or tall and thin!
when you play 3 sets against 5 sets for men, it is always an advantage.
Marion Bartoli played a more strategic than a grind type of tennis in tournaments. good volleying skills as compared to Steffi Graff even in execution.
Marion Bartoli had the belief that she could win and in contrast to Steffi Graff who believed that Bartoli would wear herself down and just lose(not that they don't have to play, just that they had to hang in there long enough for her to break down). Most of them slightly underestimated what she was doing in tournaments. She was an inexperienced player by that point who had proven herself as a former top 10 player.
Her winning was really a surprise i.e out of the blue with already having made the finals twice but her consistency was questionable.
She had unique two handed forehands and backhands. That was easy to replicate and master but once mastered it was going to be lethal. That was what spectators saw in tournaments of Marion Bartoli to a great extent.
at Wimbledon 2013 she had some luck from the draw as 15th seed. she never played a top 10 player en route to her victory. the finalist she played: Venus Williams had already beaten Agnieszka Radwańska en route to the final.
Venus Williams was playing her best but was probably worn out a lot by her battles with Agnieszka Radwańska and others. Venus Williams was in the form of her life but Bartoli had the luck of the draw.
Regardless of whether your fat or not, if you make your shots even Steffi Graff may not be able to return it at Wimbledon. so if you are playing near perfection and having consistency with your shots then you are playing on a level field.
then speaking of fat, technically Marion Bartoli may be classified as fat, yet she was the most successful female tennis player.
Bartoli wasn’t really playing a specific style and really had weakness in tournaments and most of her shots had some vigor in it that Steffi Graf generally doesn't necessarily have. Here return games were spot on and had more errors and more importantly she can get Steffi Graff to errors first.
all in all, this was a victory that was easily replicable or Bartoli after this mediocre run. She had belief and luck along with inexperience that allowed her to win her only Grand Slam. Marion Bartoli was dubbed as unfit and fat. She still made it to Grand Slam finals. Even in her Wembdon win 2013 she wasn’t fit. Marion Bartoli is an inspiration.
It was really a fluke because Bartoli won by dropping sets and beat a few top 20 players along the way.
Winning by dropping a set means you played really close to perfection along with dropping the level enough that allowed anyone to comeback and take a set from you.
being fat may seem a hindrance, but is a limitation if you want it to be one.
Honestly calling her fat in tournaments is really justifiable because she wasn’t thin but fat is really appropriate.
And yes, tall and lanky players like Steffi Graf don’t always win , especially in the topsy turvy women’s tour. slightly fatter players can generate more power than extremely thin and tall players like Steffi Graff.

Very cool video of Steffi Graf’s grand slam wins! We, as tennis fans, are so fortunate that we were able to witness actually two overlapping eras where iconic legends competed against each other. As a Steffi fan, that’s why I find her tennis career/history amazing because she overlapped in two eras. She competed against legends in Martina and Chris in her youth and a future legend in Serena as a veteran.
Steffi’s accomplishments are mind blowing with her 22 grand slams, her 1988 calendar year grand slam plus Olympic gold aka ‘the Golden Grand Slam’, a non-calendar year grand slam between ‘93-‘94, her record 377 weeks at #1, and the best all-around tennis pro winning 4 or more grand slams on different surfaces... all achieved at the age of 30 prior to her retirement in ‘99.
She also had a memorable comeback from major reconstructive knee surgery in ‘97 and being away from the tour for a year. If you think about it, it’s a wonderful story-like bookends with her first French Open title in ‘87 and her last FO slam win in ‘99.
Steffi Graf and her iconic legendary forehand is the equivalent of what we see in the great Roger Federer. Both are supreme athletes with an insane all-court power game. Roger’s game very much emulates Steffi’s playing style from her shotmaking to her movement.
Thank you Steffi Graf! You are the greatest ever!!! 🎾 🏆🥇🤩🎉👏

@@juttaweise The reason why Navratilova was successful for so many years is simple: Many of the top players from the late 80s on were very early in top places of the WTA ranking - because they overcharged their body by training too intensive from early childhood on. And some of these rising stars had not the mental strength (f.e. Capriati especially). So they were younger and younger at the time of their first normal and GS titles: Austin, Graf (injuries even from 1993 on!), Jaeger, Hingis, Seles, Rehe, Capriati. Even Seles had many problems with injuries after coming back to the WTA tour, although she retired from the professional tennis for two years at the age of 20 y after being stabbed. It is mentioned in the German Wikipedia (de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monica_Seles#1995:_Das_Comeback):
      In English:
In August 1995 striking comeback at the Canadian Open - only losing 14 games in the whole tournament (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1995_Canadian_Open_%E2%80%93_Women%27s_singles) winning against Coetzer who had defeated Graf in R2. Also winning vs Sabatini 6:1 and 6:0! In addition more winners during USO (Huber, Novotna, Martinez) - only stopped by Graf in a dramatic final on a level never seen before.
After USO Seles was stopped by injury problems. Therefore no start in Oakland (wtafiles.blob.core.windows.net/pdf/draws/archive/1995/703.pdf) and at the WTA Championships (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1995_WTA_Tour_Championships_%E2%80%93_Singles).
In Chase Championships 1996 Seles unfortunately had to retire in R1 (vs K date) because of an injury: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1996_WTA_Tour_Championships_%E2%80%93_Singles.
1996-98 Seles was not able to maintain the level of 1995 because of injuries and because of the death of father Karolj."
English Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monica_Seles) only writes: "This [AO 1996] was to be Seles' last Grand Slam title, as she struggled to recapture her best form on a consistent basis. [...] In the spring of 2003, Seles sustained a foot injury."
      In conclusion:
The earlier the young ladies are successful in (GS) titles and reaching top positions in the WTA ranking the earlier they have serious problems sometimes leading to an early retirement for physical or mental reasons. This was the reason that players like Navratilova were able to be successful more years than the young rising stars, because their training in the 70s surely was not as intensive as the training of the young girls in the 80s.
Evert's training in the 60s surely was not as intensive as the training in the 80s, too. Furthermore she played another tennis - her tennis was a not such a burden - only look at her service during the whole 70s. From nowadays in a view back to this era ridiculous.

This compilation reminds us how many all-time classics were among Steffi's winning slam finals:
    1) FO 87 against Navratilova (64 46 86)
    2) Wim 88 against Navratilova (57 62 61 after trailing 57 02)
    3) USO 89 against Navratilova (36 75 61 after trailing 36 24)
    4) Wim 91 against Sabatini (64 36 86 after Gaby serve for the match twice)
    5) Wim 93 against Novotna (76 16 64 after trailing 76 16 14, Novotna serving)
    6) Wim 95 against Sanchez (46 61 75 with the famous 10th game in the last set)
    7) USO 95 against Seles (76 06 63; Seles's return and Pa Graf jailed)
    8) FO 96 against Sanchez (63 67 108)
    9) FO 99 against Hingis (46 75 62 after Hingis having served for the match at 46 45)
Steffi won 13 (!) slam finals in 3-set matches. By far the most in the history of the game.
Evert and Serena won 8 each, Navratilova 6. No one else more than 3.
Steffi had the most successful AND most dramatic career ever in women's tennis.

And Graf won 7 or 8 as a teenager but hers unlike Seles included the Calendar Grand Slam.
As for Nadal he is better suited to grass than Seles but he is still no dominant Wimbledon player. Only 2 titles, and a bunch of early round losses. Seles might have won a Wimbledon in a year she got a weak draw without the stabbing, but that is it.

Many players have had the record for most Slams (it's a record you can always chase) but how many have achieved the Grand Slam? Graf and Laver.
