    PertSnergleman's Review:
    -------------------------------------------
    "One of my all-time favourites... enjoy!"
    For a fleeting moment in history, the Seles/Graf match-up was the hottest ticket in town, and in 1991 it was heading for greatness.
    Steffi Graf challenged WTA's new superstar: Monica Seles in the final of the $350,000 Citizen Cup, which was completed over two days due to heavy rain.
    Monica Seles of Yugoslavia replaced Steffi Graf of Germany as the world No. 1 on 11th March 1991, after Graf had held onto the top spot since 1987.
    Graf sealed her Hamburgian triumph on her third match point after a total of two hours and 21 minutes, a majestic marathon of epic proportions. She earned $70,000 and her 56th career singles title (5th straight Citizen Cup in Hamburg).
    'I am very pleased that I came to Hamburg,' said Graf, 20, who decided to enter the Citizen Cup four days before it started and received a wild-card entry.
    'It was a great match,' Seles said, promising: 'I'm definitely going to come back next year.'
    These words would haunt the talented young Seles just two years later...
    Graf took the first set 7-5 with a break in the 12th game. She jumped to a 5-2 lead in the second set by breaking Seles in the fifth and seventh games.
    But the 17-year-old Seles fought back, breaking Graf's serve twice and staving off two match points in the 10th game. Seles finally forced the dramatic second set into a tiebreaker, which she won 7-4.
    'I was too hectic on the first two match points, and she just played too good,' Graf said.
    Nobody could believe what the Citizen Cup in Hamburg had lurking in the depths of sporting tragedy just two years later...

    As great a clay court player as Monica was, on painfully slow clay like this (especially if it was damp) she could be vulnerable. She not only lost this match, but also lost two Italian open finals to Sabatini on similarly slow clay. The slowness took a lot of the sting off her shots and allowed others to manoeuvre her about more. The low bounce also exposed the weakness Monica had with the low ball on her forehand side.

      Interesting match from both of them in many ways. Steffi looked really anxious at times and seriously choked while ahead, while Monica seemed to be struggling to get out of her B game. Monica seemed to have a pattern of having some loose matches at the sub grand slam level when in her prime. She played a similar match against Sabatini in Rome in 91, and had some listless straight set losses in 92 as well.

    • @Skirne
      @Skirne 4 года назад +3

      @@th8257 Agreed. It was a rare to see Steffi visibly rattled. I think it's fair to say that in the early 90s Monica worked her way into Steffi's head. Steffi could play her absolute best against Monica and still lose.
      Still, Monica had her fair share of bad days on the court. Her concentration would drift, she could seem sluggish and yeah, even listless. Steffi, on the other hand, basically never had an off day. I don't think I've seen any champion, man or woman, who so consistently played at such a high level, day after day after day, throughout their entire career.
      It's still such a damn shame we got robbed of their rivalry. Their best matches against each hit Federer/Nadal quality.

    • @th8257
      @th8257 4 года назад +2

      @@Skirne I think steffi's head was allover the place in the early nineties. With hindsight, she was probably very burnt out from her dominant run in the late eighties - apparently after his dominant years, Roger Federer used to wake up in the middle of the night in a state of anxiety and have to be calmed down by his wife. It's like the super champions develop a kind of post traumatic stress disorder after their dominant years. In 91 in particular, at times Steffi looked like she was in a state of panic sometimes on the court, or that she didn't really want to be there. She lost a lot of matches to Sabatini that are very similar to this one in many ways. when she got a lead Steffi then seemed paralysed with nerves. Steffi also lost her only matches to Novotna during that period - their match at the Virginia slims final in 1991 is bizarre. It was like Steffi wasn't there mentally at all in the third set. Virginia Wade said something perceptive about steffi in 1991: "I have seen it happen so often to Steffi since she fell off the pinnacle she was at a couple of years ago. She will come out and play a perfect set, then suddenly out of nowhere will get edgy and brittle. And it's not like her concentration goes. It's something that happens to her confidence."

    The handshake at the net is interesting - the kind of subtle psychological gamesmanship that was so common in the women's game back then. Monica storming to the net looking like she was going to start a fight. You can see Steffi noticeably back off. Tennis is such a psychological sport and it's a battle to maintain psychological dominance. Martina Navratilova was known for it in the 80s in different ways. It's maybe one of the reasons why some of her and Monica's matches in the early 90s had a bit of underlying tension to them. Both of them trying to get psychological dominance, both of them knowing what the other was up to, and both of them refusing to be intimidated by the other.

Hitting with two hands helped make the ball stronger and faster. When she hit left-handed and one-handed, she won in doubles. She was able to fight. @@makissklavenitis9881 I didn't say you were - she clearly regained it in 1993. That doesn't mean that she didn't have a real dip from 1990-93. The two aren't mutually exclusive. From 1990 onwards Steffi was clearly burnt out from her great year from 87 onwards. It happens to all great players who have a run like that - they often develop a kind of post traumatic stress disorder. Roger Federer apparently used to wake up at night in a state of panic and his wife would have to calm him down. Steffi also had a lot of personal problems with her father during that period. You need only look at a lot of her matches, particularly in 1991 for evidence of how it all affected her. She's anxious, confused or not quite there in some of them. The key thing to look at is actually steffi's rivalry with Gabriela Sabatini, as it was Gabi who had done most to wreck Steffi's confidence, including bearing Steffi 5 times in a row during this period. After 1992, steffi never lost to Gabi again, so there were signs that Steffi's confidence was slowly coming back in any event, but I'm sure that winning those slams in 1993 helped her mentally.

    • @Volker7578
      @Volker7578 4 года назад +2

      Sabatini played her best Tennis in 91, 92, that was a big factor why she beat Graf many times. Graf won only 1 GS in 94, too, by the way. So what you call burn out, was a period of half a decade. Rather a real form than a burn out. In fact, Graf great first year in 87 was due to a burnt out Navratilova, and this is written in stone, cause Navratilova didn't win a tournament in the first half of the year. Whereas Graf never lost many in any year, except for the the first few months in 91.

    • @th8257
      @th8257 4 года назад +4

      @@Volker7578 I agree totally about Navratilova and burn out in 1987. Martina said herself that with hindsight, she was severely burnt out from 1986 onwards and didn't actually realise until mid 1989 when it occurred to her that she'd been trying to play the fewest number of tournaments possible on her schedule. So, burnout can go on for a long time - it's not necessarily something that goes away quickly (over three years in Martina's case alone). John McEnroe, Bjorn Borg and Mats Wilander are three of the more extreme examples. Borg was out of the game by the age of 26 because he was so burnt out, and McEnroe and Wilander never recovered from their great years of 84 and 88 respectively - both of them went off the rails which is an indication of just how much it takes out of players both physically and mentally. Apparently Chris Evert considered retiring on many occasions and only avoided it by taking lengthy breaks away from the game in several different years. Steffi in 1994 appears to have overtrained over the winter at the end of 93 (something she seems to have done a lot over her career and which probably took years off it) and then played way too much in the spring of 94. I remember her saying after the Lipton tournament in 1994 that she was sick to death of tennis and was dying for time off. She paid the price later in the year with lacklustre performances at the French and Wimbledon. Her season was effectively finished by injury after the US Open, which she probably shouldn't have played (only playing the Virginia slims finals after that). Just two other quick anecdotes about how mentally draining tennis can be on the players: Mary Carillo mentioned once about how she interviewed Chris evert on court after a match at the US Open. Mary said that Chris had to ask her to pull the racquet out of her hand. Chris was so physically and mentally tense after the match that she couldn't physically loosen her grip on the racquet and put it down. Steffi Graf also said after she won the US Open in 88 and completed the grand slam, all her entourage wanted to go out and celebrate. She said she could barely move because she was so emotionally exhausted and had to stay in and sleep. She also said she was relieved not to have won the grand slam in 89 because the pressure would have been unbearable. So, I guess it's just really hard for people to understand the kind of pressure that the players go through. It can leave them emotionally and physically traumatised for years afterwards.

    • @th8257
      @th8257 4 года назад +2

      @@Volker7578 it's worth also noting that in several of the matches Steffi lost to Gabi during that run, Steffi was in some kind of leading or winning position in several of them, but fell apart mentally. As Virginia Wade said of Steffi in 1991 "I have seen this happen to Steffi so many times since she fell from the pinnacle she was at several years ago. She will come out, play the perfect set and not make an error. Then suddenly, out of nowhere, she will suddenly get edgy and brittle. And it's not like her concentration goes. It's just something that happens to her confidence."
