The Wimbledon loss was far worse than this one. Jana was no where near winning this match against Seles, despite taking the first set. She had Graf on the ropes and squandered a 4-1 lead with an opportunity to lead 5-1 and basically stopped playing. All Graf had to do was keep the ball in play. Complete meltdown and an ordeal to watch :(
Some people constantly criticized Seles for skipping or not being more enthusiastic about Wimbledon but who would want to go to a place where you cannot be your authentic self? Grunting should have never been an issue but good thing those dumb Wimbledon traditionalists who imposed that are dead now (hopefully). Let's now focus on the stupid "wear white" rule. Why does it have to be white and not another color? EXACTLY. Get with the times. Also, how many of the top players skip Grand Slams now? Why isn't there criticism of that? Roger skipping French, etc. Gender issues still exist. Plus Australia praising Margaret Court is an issue too. I get if you're a racist or bigot yourself - support her all you want. But you cannot separate player from person (character). I don't care how talented you are - if you feel any person should be better/worse, have more/fewer rights, etc. based on an individual characteristic, you are so EFFED up. If your god promotes that type of hatred, then so be it. It's a wrongful generalization but why do a significant number of people outside of Australia brand Australians as racists, etc.? We can name other sport-related figures and incidences. It will take a long time for them to get rid of that global brand but many Australians probably don't care. But great to see some Australian advocates and public figures condemning Margaret Court.
A lot of what you says makes sense but remember Federer didn't skip the French without an injury until he was well into his 30s. Someone who is skipping certain events at that age will not get the same criticsm as younger players doing so. It is like Navratilova skipped the French and Australian, but not until she was in her 30s.
I agree that Wimbledon has at lot wrong with it, but I think you're getting a bit confused. Monica never had a problem with her grunting at Wimbledon until 1992. She skipped the tournament a year before that, in 1991. So much of the criticism she got for it was not that she skipped Wimbledon, but how she did it. She withdrew at the last minute, didn't say why until weeks later, refused to take any calls for weeks from the WTA who wanted to know what was wrong, then mysteriously did a very weird photo shoot for People magazine with her dressed in a disguise. She then said she was suffering from shin splints but appeared at an exhibition tournament. To make matters worse, she then showed up at the US Open wearing a t shirt with all the grand slam names on it but with Wimbledon crossed out. The perception of her back then before the stabbing, rightly or wrongly, was that she had behaved very unprofessionally and disrespectfully and was an egotistical brat who thought she was bigger than the game. A lot of rumours then circulated that she hadn't had shin splints at all, but had skipped Wimbledon to make sure that she retained the number one ranking on a certain date so that she would get a huge bonus from her contract with Yonex. Back then it was fairly easy to game the ranking system by skipping tournaments. A lot of the problem with her grunting at Wimbledon in 1992 really was in many ways a follow on from her controversial withdrawal in 1991. She had not won any friends with the way she did it, the British press really had it in for her, and a lot of the players had really come to dislike her perceived attitude. I believe that's why Tauziat and then Navratilova complained about the grunting. It was more an expression of their dislike for Monica (as she was viewed then) than anything else. It's really hard to get across just how much the perception of Monica changed after the stabbing, or how much Monica really had matured and gained perspective in her time off. She went from being the real baddy to someone who everyone loved and supported.
