Thank you for your gracious use of this classic match!
    PertSnergleman's Review:
Monica Seles won her first Australian Open and her second Grand Slam by outlasting, out-playing and out-classing Jana Novotna 5-7, 6-3, 6-1.
The deceptively cute 17-year-old Yugoslav also entered the record book as the youngest women's champion, shaving five months off the mark set 31 years ago by Hall of Fame great Margaret Court of Australia.
In 1990, this two-fisted barrel of dynamite established herself as the future heiress to the throne of No. 1 Steffi Graf by winning the French Open, the Virginia Slims Championships and seven other tour titles to claim the world`s No. 2 ranking... and elevates Seles into striking range of the struggling Graf and her four-year reign as the Queen of the WTA...
Seles took the lead for good at 2-1 in the last set by storming back from a 0-30 hole to break serve. At 30-30, Seles, stretched out far to her backhand side, flicked a smashing crosscourt service return that Novotna could not handle. On the next point, Novotna lamely sent an overhead shot wide.
Seles was off and running from there to the victory ceremony to climax her Australian Open debut. Over the final four games, Seles dominated the outgunned challenger.
The 10th-seeded Novotna, who was bidding to become the tournament`s lowest-seeded champion since 1978, opened with a crafty mixture of baseline play mixed with drop shots and strong serving to vault to a 3-1 lead over an out-of-sync Seles.
Seles had reached the final with a 6-3, 0-6, 9-7 victory over American Mary Joe Fernandez on a sweltering center court. Novotna, in addition to her quarterfinal victory over Graf, eliminated Arantxa Sanchez Vicario 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals.
It was so hot Thursday that Seles-tired from the previous day`s doubles play and singles practice-had to be told what the final score was of her marathon match with Fernandez.
''If you asked me what happened, I can't recall it, really,'' said Seles, who rarely has been at a loss for words during the tournament.

I loved this version of Monica.... when life was much less complicated, she swung so freely and fearlessly at the ball. Before all of the hateful press, gruntometers, and nasty Graf fans doing their worst trolling. It was cut way too short, but it was a great run while it lasted.

Agreed with u Monica was so innocent and the evil Gunther parche took everything away from her so much pressure at Wimbledon than Steffi Graf at the 1993 was furious when she lost Aussie open she broke the locker with her racket and then this evil monster was very upset seeing Graf getting frustrated for not winning nothing he was planning to do something at the 1993 Hamburg tournament so it was Graf fault too

Some people constantly criticized Seles for skipping or not being more enthusiastic about Wimbledon but who would want to go to a place where you cannot be your authentic self? Grunting should have never been an issue but good thing those dumb Wimbledon traditionalists who imposed that are dead now (hopefully).
Let's now focus on the stupid "wear white" rule. Why does it have to be white and not another color? EXACTLY. Get with the times.
Also, how many of the top players skip Grand Slams now? Why isn't there criticism of that? Roger skipping French, etc. Gender issues still exist.
Plus Australia praising Margaret Court is an issue too. I get if you're a racist or bigot yourself - support her all you want. But you cannot separate player from person (character). I don't care how talented you are - if you feel any person should be better/worse, have more/fewer rights, etc. based on an individual characteristic, you are so EFFED up. If your god promotes that type of hatred, then so be it. It's a wrongful generalization but why do a significant number of people outside of Australia brand Australians as racists, etc.? We can name other sport-related figures and incidences. It will take a long time for them to get rid of that global brand but many Australians probably don't care. But great to see some Australian advocates and public figures condemning Margaret Court.

A lot of what you says makes sense but remember Federer didn't skip the French without an injury until he was well into his 30s. Someone who is skipping certain events at that age will not get the same criticsm as younger players doing so. It is like Navratilova skipped the French and Australian, but not until she was in her 30s.

    • @th8257
      @th8257 3 года назад

I agree that Wimbledon has at lot wrong with it, but I think you're getting a bit confused. Monica never had a problem with her grunting at Wimbledon until 1992. She skipped the tournament a year before that, in 1991. So much of the criticism she got for it was not that she skipped Wimbledon, but how she did it. She withdrew at the last minute, didn't say why until weeks later, refused to take any calls for weeks from the WTA who wanted to know what was wrong, then mysteriously did a very weird photo shoot for People magazine with her dressed in a disguise. She then said she was suffering from shin splints but appeared at an exhibition tournament. To make matters worse, she then showed up at the US Open wearing a t shirt with all the grand slam names on it but with Wimbledon crossed out. The perception of her back then before the stabbing, rightly or wrongly, was that she had behaved very unprofessionally and disrespectfully and was an egotistical brat who thought she was bigger than the game. A lot of rumours then circulated that she hadn't had shin splints at all, but had skipped Wimbledon to make sure that she retained the number one ranking on a certain date so that she would get a huge bonus from her contract with Yonex. Back then it was fairly easy to game the ranking system by skipping tournaments. A lot of the problem with her grunting at Wimbledon in 1992 really was in many ways a follow on from her controversial withdrawal in 1991. She had not won any friends with the way she did it, the British press really had it in for her, and a lot of the players had really come to dislike her perceived attitude. I believe that's why Tauziat and then Navratilova complained about the grunting. It was more an expression of their dislike for Monica (as she was viewed then) than anything else. It's really hard to get across just how much the perception of Monica changed after the stabbing, or how much Monica really had matured and gained perspective in her time off. She went from being the real baddy to someone who everyone loved and supported.

@@th8257 Yes the stabbing and Seles become this super sympathetic figure has made a lot of people forget her bizarre and at times oft putting personality in 90 and 91, especialy. She was maturing some in 92 and 93, but there was a reason she was disliked by fans and fellow players early on, and it wasn't just that she was winning. Evert was loved by her fellow players and fans when she first began dominating. So was Federer. So was Graf for the most part. Navratilova wasn't mostly due to homophobia, which isn't something Seles had to deal with.

Monica was so ungracious to not even congratulate Jana, how rude was that?

Did Jana congratulate Monica?! How convenient of you to not remark on that. Congrats to Monica were more due that vice versa, since she was the winner!

Horrible 3rd set by Jana. Nothing but unforced errors. Also last 2 games of the 2nd, 8 unforced errors in a row, or maybe 1 point was a forced error, but the rest all unforced.

She can get too nervous and edgy, and out of nowhere. Sort of unreliable. Both brilliant players to watch. Watching 2023 women’s tennis is just a sleep aid for me. Boring.

Is it because you were team Graf? Afterall she was just a kid playing great tennis. Reason I ask is bc I too was diehard team Graf up to her retirement in 99 and Seles was my least favorite before Sanchez Vicario and Sabatini. The FO Final in 90 had me scratching my head: Who is this kid to take Graf in straights? But today I respect all of them for their achievements and contributions.
