    • @akbarshahzad5780
      @akbarshahzad5780 5 месяцев назад +4

      because it wasn't federeresque. just because a player has a onehanded backhand doesn't mean their game is similar to roger's. federer was an attacking player who relied on his serve to win buckets of points and on his immaculate timing to take the ball early and keep his opponents on the run for the few groundstrokes it took to put them away; his variety and volleys were a bonus, but it was that serve and the otherworldly baseline hitting that were his bread and butter. a lot of ohbh players are in the henin mould, which is a classic clay court style (federer struggled, relatively, on clay, and so people assume onehanders struggle on clay, when in fact the reverse is true: kuerten, henin, wawrinka, thiem, tsitsipas, suarez navarro, almagro, all at their best on clay), reliant on heavy spin and lateral movement (see henin slice balls out of the corners on both sides at full sprints and it's hard to believe this is 2003).

      @@wiggawiggum Since the year 2000, there have been 24 Roland Garros championships. 14 of them have been won by Rafael Nadal, who hits a two-hander. Three more by Novak Djokovic, likewise a two-hander. Of the remaining six, _only Juan Carlos Ferrero_ hits a two-handed backhand. Kuerten (x2 in this period), Costa, Gaudio, Federer, Wawrinka -- all onehanded backhands. Given the ratio of one-handers to two-handers in the game as a whole, that is a lot of overrepresentation for the supposedly weaker form! Earlier, you had Thomas Muster, who dominated clay courts despite playing against mostly two-handers. Then there are Thiem and Tsitsipas, players whose backhands work best on clay. Ditto Almagro and Gasquet, both of whom benefit (as do many one-handers) from the extra time clay affords them, time they can use to unfurl their big backswings. On the women's side, one-handers are much rarer, yet you have Henin with three titles. Yes, the high-bouncing ball can, in theory, pose a problem, but history shows that there is another side to the one-handed coin, and Federer's struggles against Nadal and other spin-heavy players have skewed the perception.

      @@sultanabran1 Excellently put ! The Williams sisters had raw power, but little to no tactics. That is why Justine Henin stopped Serena in her prime. Her team came up with tactics to confuse Serena and not allow her to get in a comfortable position to whack the ball. Henin's team tactics plan was first tried in the 2003 Charleston final. It worked, in that Justine beat Serena in straights, thus snapping Serena's winning streak in 2003. Serena, in typical unsportsmanlike fashion, discounted the loss by declaring: " I lose only when I play bad ". Such lack of respect fired up Justine for the French Open. Indeed Justine outplayed/outsmarted Serena in the 3rd set and snapped Serena Slam-match winning streak. It was a glorious victory for the GAME of tennis !
      Moving forward to 2019, Simona Halep, whose role model is Justine, employed similar tactics to beat Serena in straights in the Wimbledon final.

      Henin beat her at 3 different slams in 2007, and she won 2 of those slams. It was a good rivalry. Henin and Clijsters were the only two "real" rivals that Serena had in her carreer. And by real I mean that they could really be better than her consistently and in big occasions. All the credit for Serena's 2012 resurgence are given to muratoglou, but I think she was able to win a lot after 2012 because there weren't Kim and Justine (at their best) around.

      @@milvao3400Better than her on big occasions? Kim beat Serena twice and lost 7 times. She only beat her once at a slam. Henin dominated Serena in 2007 mostly due to Henin playing incredible tennis and Serena not at her best because she barely played tennis in 2006. Both were incredible players, but Serena had other tough rivals like Venus and Capriati who I feel were bigger rivals than Clijsters. But it's clear that Serena at her best is better than all of them at their best except on clay in the case of Justine Henin. Henin is better than Serena on clay. And also they weren't at their best in 2012 because they couldn't compete with the younger players. Their bodies broke down. The fact that Serena could continue to dominate shows she was superior to them.

      @@kofipokuantwi-boateng5446 Venus shouldn't count because it's obvious that she's her biggest rival, due to the fact that she's also her sister. Tennis-wise Kim and Justine are the only players who didn't just beat Serena once or twice because they were lucky or because Serena wasn't at her best and/or underestimated them. That's my opinion because I watched the matches. Kim retired early and became a mother, otherwise she would have had more wins vs. Serena for sure.

      @milvao3400 There's no guarantee Kim could have won more matches against Serena. She retired in 2007 mainly because of injuries and also a desire to start a family, and that's not Serena's problem. Kim was also losing to the so called weak Era players like Azarenka, Kerber and Laura Robson as well as Sharapova in 2012. I don't see how she was going to be a threat beyond 2012. Her body could no longer handle the demands of tennis. Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters are excellent players, but when Serena is playing at her best and without any injuries she's only vulnerable against Henin on clay. Capriati was a far tougher rival than Clijsters.

    one big difference in this match is movement: Serena just cannot come out of the corners and reset in the way that Henin can, Henin growing up on red clay.
    it is quite jarring to see how frequently Serena is rushed on the forehand, unable to use her normal high and looped takeback and hit with her normal penetration. no-one was doing that to Serena back then: she had so much time on the ball.
    Henin’s game, with its mix of power, different trajectories, angles and volleying really unsettled Serena - and i can say that as someone that loved Serena’s style and shotmaking.
    people said so much about ‘the hand’ and there is certain ugliness - bequeathed by the French crowd. however, this match represents the two premier female talents of 2000s professional tennis.

Even without that moment, Serena might have lost the match but we will never know. The hand moment took away from what might have been an entertaining match. I’m glad that Henin regretted her behavior in this match and apologized to Serena eventually. The crowd was firmly against Serena and the gamesmanship along with the crowd rattled her too much. She was winning until that moment and never found her form again.

I don't know, I always felt like the hand incident, while ugly, didn't define the match as much as people think it did. I think it really was the crowd getting into it.
