This was brilliant. People bang on about the "rivalry" (like there ever *was* one) between Williams and Sharapova. But this *was* a rivalry. Henin was one of few players, at the time, who could challenge Williams with a beautiful game, full of variety, especially that backhand.
One of my favourite all time matches was the Wimbledon final of 2006 where both Henin and Mauresmo (another great one handed back hand) treated the world to the type of all court tennis you rarely see nowadays. It was one of those matches, where I didn't know who to root for.

      Serena - 34
      Steffi - 66
Steffi had two more monstrous winning streaks (45 in 1987 and 46 in 1988)
Winning record over players who have been ranked in the top 10:
      Serena - 427-177 (78%)
      Steffi - 452-91 (83%)
      Olympic singles medals:
      Serena - 1 gold (2012)
      *Steffi- 1 gold (1988), 1 silver (1992)*
      Year-End Championship titles:
      Serena - 5
      Steffi - 5
Steffi is also in the top 2 best players of all time on all surfaces, while Serena lags considerably behind Evert, Graf, Court, Seles, Henin and even Sanchez Vicario on clay. Steffi is also the only player in history to win all slams at least four times and the only player to defend each major at least once.
Steffi achieved more than Serena despite retiring at the age of 30. One Slam more for Serena simply isn't enough to overshadow all of Steffi's amazing accomplishments and records. She still is, without a doubt, the greatest female tennis player of all time. Serena's fixation on slams and complete disregard of every other event will hurt her in the long run as far as the GOAT debate is concerned. She simply was never able to achieve the level of dominance and consistency like Navratilova, Evert and especially Steffi.
Steffi leads Serena in virtually every single stat that is a benchmark of greatness and Serena will never be able to catch up to Steffi.

The whole "24 Grand Slams" only started to become a thing once Serena started approaching that number. It was never the number for Graf to beat. They change the goalposts for people like Serena; she was never supposed to be the GOAT. But boy, did she prove them wrong.

    • @akizaizinskii
      @akizaizinskii 2 года назад

      That’s not true at all…
Once she reached 20 Slams, Graf was constantly asked about whether her goal was to break Court’s Slam record to which Steffi always answered with no. And just turn on the 1999 Wimbledon final between Graf and Davenport. The ESPN commentators clearly say at the beginning that Graf is 2 Slams away from Court’s all time record.
Serena is an all time great for sure but not the GOAT and it’s not because of the Slam number either. Her career stats aren’t as good as Steffi’s. Steffi and Martina are the two greatest female players of all time, with Serena, Margaret and Chris just behind them.

By the way, Serena had already won 8 slams at the middle of 2008 (without counting the slams in doubles) more than Justine's entire career. Serena has already been world n°1 while Justine was playing and before her first retirement. So to say "Henin had the better career by April 2008 when she first retired. She was better than Serena. @@swamp5050 no I am not new to tennis and henin was unbeatable 2006-2008. neither Venus nor serena were able to beat her. Yeah she did not win Wimbledon, but her style was not baseliner who hits hard.

@@anneneville6255 Well, you've got to have all the gears to maintain and beat everyone that's in front of you, you can't just be a one trick pony! That's the reason Serena has the title of GOAT and Henin doesn't nor does anyone else on the women's side!

@@swamp5050 I guess she has all the gear since was demolishing them for years. They started to win again (and most of wta) after she retired. You need to adapt to the style of play of your opponent to win.
