You recognize the correlation between youth, injuries and going on tour. This is why Mr. Williams limited his girls junior touring schedule. He was called all kinds of disrespectful name for this by the USTA people and media people. In hindsight, he looks like a genius for his vision and guidance for the Williams sisters. And, as he foretold, they had long successful tennis careers. They have been conscious international embassadors of tennis and inspired millions to play. Currently, Serena is two major wins away from being the number 1 all time major tournament winner in tennis. Venus has been magnificent and has significant multitudes of tournament wins. When Venus casted a shadow over her sister in the early days, Mr. Williams said the younger Serena would be better in the future. Now, we see what he talked about decades ago.
During this time Hingis was the top player and everybody thought she was the next Steffi Graf. Nobody thought that Serena will actually be the one beating Graf records as she was still developing her game at that time.
Tobias Immerstein it’s so funny when people that look like you claim steroids. Considering people that look like you hate Serena has that been true Serena would have been banned a long time ago. B M-Y Still counting until she says she’s retired. She could still win US Open, or she could win 1 or 2 next year. You may have stop counting but she hasn’t yet😘.
Maybe. But she's a bully player. She just tries to overpower everyone and the other ladies have naturalized that advantage. Look how many unforced errors she had in this match. Plus she's a poor professional and notorious bad sport.
One of the greatest matches of all time, the level was just unreal and the atmosphere is crackling. It's a bit like that US Open match of Henin vs Capriati, where you can rewatch it and instantly feel the excitement of the crowd and the occasion. Some of the shots that both players came up with were inspirational. True talent on display and they both fought to the end.
Huge Serena fan here but I will say this Martina and Lindsey gave both Serena and Venus all they could handle back in the day! And made some tennis!!!!!!
Hingis was too stubborn. Giorgi is smaller than her yet packed power. Because Martina was winning so easy before the power power she never adjusted her game
And Serena was never a graceful loser against other players. Admittedly, she's one of the greatest players of all time, but never liked her entitled attitude.
This was a great match. Granted this was early in Serena’s career, but she always struggled against good returners of serve. Without that weapon to fall back on, she struggled right through her career. But love that drop volley to save match point. She was so good at the net when she was younger. The last decade in her career, she couldn’t volley to save her life. Hingis is just one of the smartest players to ever play in the women’s side.
“And we join the action in the 3rd set” Really now, is that the best you could do! You realize they only play 3 sets. C’mon now, give us at least 2 sets of a classic!
One of my favorite all time matches. The Australian Open might be the most neutral surface for both Hingis and Serena. Hingis truly won this match. Serena did not lose this match, Hingis had to win it.
Martina might have had a weak service, might have not been the fastest or strongest, but she was definitly the most intelligent and had the most beautiful and classy playmaking I've ever seen.
Classic Hingis, after she demolishes Venus. Too bad for Women's Tennis Hingis got injured. This would've been such a great rivalry. Hingis has superior striking ability, shot placement, pace control, diversity of game, she just lacked power.
LadyMaryNW45 Yeah, most players even hard hitters were very cautious when dealing with Martina Hingis. She was striking the ball early on the rise, top spin shots and those skillful half volleys were her weapons to compensate for the lack of power.
@@mountainblanc3200 She really formed the foundation for the new players now. They are able to incorporate all which Hingis innovated into their power games, even deadlier now!

Errr I disagree. Its rumoured she became a bit of a coke head..She always deniged it though..Anyways I think that was why she walked away from it..But yeah she was a joy to watch.. My favourite female player, her and Graff...And of course the William's sisters
@@markmorris7123 "Rumored" being the key point here. In reality, Hingis' game didn't match up to power players when they were hitting more winners than unforced. Hingis had a lot of variety, but none of that mattered when you can't get to the ball or forced onto your back foot.
Martina's serve was the biggest issue in her game, because she had everything else she was quick she was smart and once she got a rally going she usually got the upper hand. but shoulder problems and i think going pro so young just took the longevity out of her career .
Imagine if she was around in the 70s 80s
I wonder why her serves looked soo weak and I seen her stretching out her shoulders a lot
And the cocaine problem
10:43 wow don't know anyone else hit this kind of shot. Drive volley almost at the baseline 😮
So good to see Martina playing so well after all these years. I hope she gets to the final and wins.
You do realize this is from 2001??
@@mwoz14222 I think he meant he hopes she went to the final after this match.
@@amaiurjarauta969 she did and lost to Capriati
What a match!! Beautiful Hingis smile!
During this time Hingis was the top player and everybody thought she was the next Steffi Graf. Nobody thought that Serena will actually be the one beating Graf records as she was still developing her game at that time.
Graf is the GOAT.
And graf faced much better HOF competition.
Tobias Immerstein it’s so funny when people that look like you claim steroids. Considering people that look like you hate Serena has that been true Serena would have been banned a long time ago. But I guess drugs helps your limited mind comprehend how physically superior Serena is than her opponents.
Also during this time, no mention of Margaret Court's record. Steffi's record was seen as the one to beat, but since Serena broke it... The narrative changed.
@@TobiasImmerstein-tm3gp you didn't grow up with black kids in your community or have any as friends? This can be considered a stereotype, but it is my truth; a lot of them are gifted with athletic bodies. Our track and field team were all Canadian black for the sprints, Africans for the long distance, and field spots were the whites sprinkled with some Asians. Quite a few of my classmates from 11 years old onwards naturally had a 6 pack abs. Genetics - all the strong, well built Africans in the 20th century were sold as slaves - those genes have been passed on
Xiao Chiao yes. Serena already is since AO 17 the greatest slam winner
Martina was not only a hell of a tennis star but she’s pretty to look at as well. The perfect combo. She has an a competitive monster inside of her.
Martina was an incredibly smart player
Serena has outlasted them ALL!!!!! 23 Grand Slam single titles & Still counting 🥰.
Buffalo 66...SO, she’s gonna be alright 👌
B M-Y not many people are still getting to FINALS at her age. i'm sure you don't disrespect Federer the same way and he's just as old and has been losing finals.
B M-Y Still counting until she says she’s retired. She could still win US Open, or she could win 1 or 2 next year. You may have stop counting but she hasn’t yet😘.
Steffi graf is the goat she won 22 out of 54 Slams serena 23 out of 71!!!
Maybe. But she's a bully player. She just tries to overpower everyone and the other ladies have naturalized that advantage. Look how many unforced errors she had in this match. Plus she's a poor professional and notorious bad sport.
I remembered I watched this game live on TV. Wow time flies.
Martina Hingis is pure class and Beauty , she is a legend and my favourite Player ever
shame for you she didn't win more of 5 grand slam ...
@@Gamer-sv2mz she won with doubles and mixed 25 GS titles
i meaned in simple play thanks
Even after being a coke head? And people still root for cheater Sharapova, tennis fans, like the sport itself needs a lesson in reality
@@1deonlucas9 she tried coke for one time on a party, it was a mistake but this was no doping!
Martina .... such a great tennis player and beautiful, too.
True talent on display and they both fought to the end.
hingis is one of the most beautiful players..EVER on tour.....her style of play is missed in tennis very much..........
just to add...now...it is just ...slam, bam, wham, eeekkkkkk......shriekkkkkkkkk.......STILL love tennis though....
Yep I must admit Martina has a lovely arse and nice legs here 😛
Serena always gave Hingis a tough time. But after this match Hingis goes on to beat Venus 6-1 6-1.
10:48 WOW that was quick
Most favourite match!
Most iconic tennis outfit of Martina
Huge Serena fan here but I will say this Martina and Lindsey gave both Serena and Venus all they could handle back in the day! And made some tennis!!!!!!
Before they both matured and then neither cam hang with them
Martina where she puts her eye she puts the bullet..What a talent.!!❤
Imagine Hingis had bullet serve like Williams
Hingis was too stubborn. Giorgi is smaller than her yet packed power. Because Martina was winning so easy before the power power she never adjusted her game
True, it can only be imagined never lived. Only dreams with no manifestation.
I always loved the Hingis style. The compact, efficient strokes, the angles, the strategy and the sometimes arrogant, brattish behaviour.
@Max E @M C There was never arrogance.
Loved Martina. Surprised she didn't win more slams..
Injuries cut her career short.
Martina was Effortless - I love her game. I grew to love Serena 😍
Serena is so quiet in this match....I wish she played more like this.
Amazing tennis. Martina was tougher mentally in this match.
The great match of Hingis career!
Legend Hingis ~~My HERO
“And we join the action in the 3rd set” Really now, is that the best you could do! You realize they only play 3 sets. C’mon now, give us at least 2 sets of a classic!
8:59 - famous wicked lob.
Wait didn’t know Natalie Portman played tennis
And Hingis got a role in Star Wars!
No, that's Serena Williams!
Don’t insult Natalie Portman
They did look alike from certain angles. Now they don't look alike as they get older but the similarity is still there in certain photographs.
a true class of her own, way to go martina!
Golden era of women's tennis. WTA was better than ATP 2000-2004/5.
One of my favorite all time matches. The Australian Open might be the most neutral surface for both Hingis and Serena. Hingis truly won this match. Serena did not lose this match, Hingis had to win it.
I love Hingis
I saw martina win aus open 1996 she was incredible such a fighter
Monumental effort from Martina, must be hard when there is such a big physical disadvantage.
Especially, when the opponent is a transgender who has no business playing women's tennis!!!!
@@jamesl9539 no she is not. look at the pics as a child. 2. she is jehovas witness they dont do that.
Martina might have had a weak service, might have not been the fastest or strongest, but she was definitly the most intelligent and had the most beautiful and classy playmaking I've ever seen.
Beauty+skills, Martina is the best at all times
What a talent of Martina Hingis..never stop smiling ❤❤❤
No me canso de ver este partido de tennis..que tel remontada de Hingis ❤❤
I didn't know Williams played without grunting once!
the most graceful tennis player, martina hingis. i love and miss the swiss girl.
Sin duda, la gran Martina!!!
Serena's topspin forehand looked excellent during this battle. 🎾🎾
This match is a classic between two greats
Terrific Martina💪❤..i miss you
Would love 2 c the full game. Please.
What a powerful game from both players.
I want to say that Martina Hingis is the most beautiful tennis player in history ❤
Classic Hingis, after she demolishes Venus. Too bad for Women's Tennis Hingis got injured. This would've been such a great rivalry. Hingis has superior striking ability, shot placement, pace control, diversity of game, she just lacked power.
Like wozniacki,radwanska and Li.
Williams has a wall in the UK of awards the white chick sucks
LadyMaryNW45 Yeah, most players even hard hitters were very cautious when dealing with Martina Hingis. She was striking the ball early on the rise, top spin shots and those skillful half volleys were her weapons to compensate for the lack of power.
@@mountainblanc3200 She really formed the foundation for the new players now. They are able to incorporate all which Hingis innovated into their power games, even deadlier now!
@@aaron1983 she never had a power game. She couldn't hang with the heavy hitters. She was good for her time but her game was too weak for what was coming. The William's sisters Shsrapova, Justine Anna Harden. Too strong for her weak game. Not to mention her serve was like 20mph slower. She rarely hit 95-100
Definitely my favorite she smiles when she's up and when she's down
Can you post the whole match? There is nothing for us to watch
I had such a huge crush on Martina Hingis growing up. LOL.
What is the "LOL" for?
Maks LOL because she wasn't a solid player in the long run and she often bad mouthed other players.
Im either
Me too.
Like a deep, carnal thing. Still can't figure it out.
I love Martina hingis..she is or was one of the best tennis players ❤
🤔She was my favorite to watch .
Talented and Beautiful.🥰😎
Dear ...oh ..dear ...one of those days ,something we never forget .
