It was more they both always felt that Graph didn't do enough work as the top dominate player to advance the sport the way both Chris and Martina (and certainly BJK ). It was a change in generation where she was taking getting the money and success that the previous generation worked so hard to create and didn't seem grateful.
@@johniii8147Steffi's personality made it hard for her to come out of her shell. Her dad Peter Graf also taught her not to get close to other players for fear it would take away her competitiveness. All these factors kept Steffi from giving more back to the game that made her so rich. Needless to say Steffi was not close to Chris or Martina
A who's who of tennis from the 20th century. Sadly, many of them are not around today. I've never seen a collection of champions such as this before or since. It brings back so many good memories of watching matches.
How inspiring to see such a grand bunch of tennis troopers! Some of those playing in the late '30's to '50's just have to be in their mid 80's to mid 90's, at this reunion/presentation event, most of them -- amazingly still looking spry -- our hats off to them all! Terrific to see some of my old favorites again, of 45+ years ago, still looking great in 2000. I don't know how many hours I was glued to the tube watching some of these players, years ago, but it's really nice to see them so many years later! I'm watching this in mid-2022 and some of the early players have gone on to their eternal reward now, but we thank all of the players for entertaining us so well, for so long, bless them all. Thank you for this post, it was wonderful though a bit emotional to see all the players again!

Can't deny Johnny Mac was a good player, he was, but his attitude sucked! Just like I liked Chris Evert and couldn't stand Billie Jean King! I respect a player's ability, but I detest combative attitudes! I rarely watch pro tennis anymore, it's changed too much. There is NO NEED to grunt and squeal every time you hit the ball, that's just no class! (I don't expect anyone to agree with me and that's fine -- everyone is entitled to their own opinion!)

The top ten - I only know 3 of them at most and don't care about the others. They must be very good, but I don't have any connection with them. Sad.

Great to hear the roar of the crowd which greeted Evonne Goolagong Cawley. Pity they misspelled her name CRAWLEY! A magical player whose performances we need to see far more of.
Not only calling her Crawley, but also crediting her with a mixed doubles title she never won! Evonne won the ladies doubles in 1974. Maybe that's what they're thinking of? She's often credited for Helen Cawley's doubles win in 1977 - the year Evonne didn't play Wimbledon!

The incomparable Manolo/Manuel Santana (1938-2021) - the player who inspired me to play the game. The Roger Federer of his era, class, grace and personality.
Just saw this terrific array of champions from my and previous and later eras. Seeing those aussie champs from the sixties was really special. I was a ball boy in 1969 at Aust. Open in Brisbane for Laver, Roche, Court, King, Casals, Gonzalez etc. I carried out racquets for Laver and Gonzalez for centre court matches in 1969 - Pancho had 7 racquets all with his name embossed on the covers !! I thought that was the height of stardom !!!! Try carrying 7 racquets as an 11 year old !! I carried Billie Jeans racquets on before a match and after she won she gave me 2 x 20c coins to go and buy us soft drinks and we sat down and chatted in the players area for a time. When Laver played Roche in the semi-final that year it was the longest match in Open history, the players came off after the 3rd set i think to shower and change, the line umpires and ball boys all changed over but i gave my 50c payment to some kid and i took his place to go back out. I knew something special was happening. Laver, Roche, probably the central umpire and me were the only ones to be on the court for the whole match. That's my claim to fame and no-one can take that off me. Laver was the greatest.

Type in 1969 Australian Open semi final and there is some vision of the match in various videos and in the 6 minute one you'll see a little fella standing at the net at 3 min 30 secs after Roche loses a point to Laver to go up 21-20 in the second set. THAT LITTLE BUGGA IS ME !!! Serve and volley for nearly five hours in 100 degree heat in January in Brisbane. Crazy yeh !
I was missing Jimmy here too. He was my favorite during his era. He must have been invited to this ceremony. Actually, over the years I noticed he doesn’t seem to attend these occasional major reunions at the U.S. Open & Wimbledon. Maybe tennis reunions aren’t his thing. Our loss. 🙁
I'm born in 67, so I haven't seen all these champions play, but I can say that I loved McEnroe, Edberg, Borg, but if I have to be honest, the player that most of all excited me for her attack game on the grass was Martina Navratilova, never again anyone like her
I am a 90 yr old active leftie tennis player living in a Senior Resort in Laguna Woods. It was great to go back down memory lane with the tennis stars of the Past many of whom I have seen playing tennis in my home country of Englad - Wimbledon in person. Tennis is a great life and keeps you young.

I remember watching this live, was massively emotional.
Was waiting to hear the name of Jimmy connors,but utter surprised that wimbledon forgot him. He was champion in 1974 and in 1982. A great champion.

Tennis is a great life and keeps you young.
The synonym for transcendence is Rafa. Just to be clear that transcendence is not in the category of superlatives. Transcendence is the dissolution of thought that attempts to describe. It is prior to and beyond every description.
Rafa is not superhuman. On the contrary, he is fully human - he fully embraces suffering, he fully breathes self-doubt, he fully respects each and every player, each and every human being across the planet, he fully respects every tennis 🎾 racquet if he's not smashed a single one, he fully loves Real Madrid, he fully respects Roger and Novak, he fully loves humanity.
Transcendence when lived is humility, humility, humility. Rafa!
Or, to put it another way, he's a nice bloke and a good tennis player.
