Serena's serve is just a work of art and it saved her SO many times in her career. I remember watching this match live - It was so good that I ended up being 10 minutes late to my summer class! It was a true grand slam moment. You could hear a pin drop in the audience because the tension was so high.
Still amazes me how Serena pulled this off. She was off balance, out of sort and was playing defence this whole match and Demienteva was playing arguably her best match in her career.
Elena came up short so many times. Mentally she wasn’t as strong as her opponents. This was an amazing match. They had a good one in Australia the same year
This is a top of the list of women’s Wimbledon matches. I’ll never forget that at the net volley from Serena to save match point at 4-5 in the third! Definitely a classic.
It takes gut to go to the net at match point especially when the approaching shot wasn't that great. Even Richard Williams had a word after the match about it.
Yep. I'll never forget this amazing match as long as I live. I remember watching it live on TV and being nervous as a cat about Serena being so close to losing. Although Elena played great tennis, Serena, as usual, proved why she's the greatest and the consistent comeback queen. God bless her! Thanks for posting this very memorable & enjoyable tennis match from back in the day, Tennis Top Shots!
This is how close serena was of loosing this match 5:40. I remember while I was watching this match live, I thought it was long and then the electricity went off in my home. So I was not able to see the hawk eye decision. I continued to sit on the same spot with the same posture for around an hour and was praying for serena. Then the electricity came back and I heard commentators of star sports saying that serena played 60 to 70 percent of her ability in this match and still won. That's when I knew the Queen has won that match. Those were the days!
I wouldnt feel too bad, Dementieva did beat Serena in 2008 to get the Gold medal at the Olympics, which she says in Russia is just as big as winning a grand slam.
I felt bad for her. She gave everything and played at such a high level and was so close. Just shows that there is something about Serena. She just had that little bit of extra.
The Battle of the Backhands at 14:55 in which Serena’s became more deadlier with every strike was epic!!! Serena’s form on the last one is perfectly wicked!!! Wow! 😮 “It’s the knock down” for me.

Just by watching this game Serena Williams is the GOAT. If and only if she doesn’t win another grand slam her name is already written down in history period. Haters go live up to your standard.
This is why Serena is the GOAT - to be able to take your opponent's best shot and still win. Dementieva and Roddick were heartbroken this Wimbledon tournament - both of them played the matches of their lives.
My list of top 5 the greatest womens matches: 1. Venus vs Lindsay Davenport 2005. Wimbledon 2. Seles Graf 1992. RG 3. Henin Capriati 2003. USOpen 4. Serena Dementieva 2009. Wimbledon 5. Henin Dementieva 2010. Australian open. Can't get over the fact Elena hasn't won a major.
This match was such a nail biter! My heart rate was off the chain. I remember not wanting to bear the pain with Serena of her being denied another Wimbledon title after losing to Venus the previous year and the injury in '07. The point at 14:55 and the series of backhands is my favorite because of you hear her change the emphasis of her grunt to push the backhand deep into Dementieva to draw the error and not face match point. Phenomenal! Serena is the GOAT and many moments in this match proved it
Absolutely love Serena. Elena!!!! I wanted her to win a slam. She was one of the best players. She should have beat Pierce in the French open, but Mary pulled ‘an injury’ time out to stop Elena’s momentum. Great player!!
Elena improved her serve late in her career. 2008 and 2009 was about her peak. She definitely would have won grand slams if she served like this her entire career
I honestly think that this is the match that put the nail in the coffin for her retirement. I think she knew she couldn't play better than this and in losing she knew how difficult it would be to get to that level (or better) again in her career.
@@co9971 I get that, but without injury she had a very good chance to win the French the following year. I think Stosur could have won the final, but Elena wasn't losing to Fran in the semi without the injury. I truly believe in any other era Dementieva would have been dominant, it's unfortunate she played during Serena's!
