Great Advice here Steve.
Good work Fella! 😇
Thanks for your take on sowing seeds Steve. I'm just starting out, a lot to learn and am looking forward to growing something for myself.
Thanks Steve
You are welcome Noreen...Steve...😃
Super video; brilliantly straightforward and informative. Thanks a bunch x
New gardener, thanks for all your great advice, RIP, trying the Lisbon now 🤞
👍👍🇺🇸 Oregon
Don't worry Steve, I'm a softy southerner and I understand your accent fine. 👍👍
Thanks for that Simon, good to know I am coming through loud and clear...Steve...😃
Another great guide to seed sowing. Day length is so important for success. Teach!
Extra daylight, extra gardening time!...Steve...😃
As you are going through your seed packets, I like the way you are surrounded by spade handles - it’s as if they are on guard!
Hi Steve. I like the sound of your cottage garden style raised beds. Really looking forward to seeing these over the coming weeks and how they progress. Trevor.
The kitchen garden sounds great, specially for the home garden growers that need veg varieties in small quantities. 🤗👍✅
Hi Steve this is exciting times planing your seed sowing and planting , after a winter of repairs and such like to the plots it's now time to think of getting seed sown . Keep safe Bill and val
So much to do at this time of the year, but hopefully I am prepared enough this season...Steve...😃
I planted White Lisbon bunching onion, first time, Jan.28th. Sooo glad for your comment. I won't fall apart if they don't produce.
Hi Brenda, white lisbon are popular because they are supposed to be bullet proof and easy to grow, I could grow them but I never seemed to manage to get the bottoms to bulb out as they should, so I gave up and now grow the Ishikura instead...Steve...😃
Great reminder about the number of daylight hours as the weeks go by Steve - it won't be too long til we're up to 10 hours! Also, agree with you on the taste of the flat leaf parsley - I'll definitely be growing more of it this year.
Even when you have too much parsley, chopped and frozen in the freezer...you will run out of it! At least that is what happens to me...Steve...😃
Thank you, this is my first year with allotment and I am going to aim to sow my seeds at the same time as you. My aubergines and chillis have sprouted already on the spare bedroom windowsill which faces south.
The very best of luck Fiona with your fist year on your allotment ! Do a little bit at a time and dont forget you will have problems in your first couple of years, fellow plot holders will be a godsend for you over this time...Steve...😃
Thank you for the seed list in the description so helpful to hunt out some early varieties.
Thanks so much for another fab video, Steve! I love your enthusiasm for your kitchen garden. The spitty-spotty but made me giggle - I could totally get what you meant by that. I can't wait to see the results.
Thanks Robin, It will either be great or it will fail miserably, in which case I will learn from it, so a win win!...Steve...😃
@@GreenSideUp Everything is an experiment, a learning opportunity. Nothing is ever a failure (remind me of that next time I have one 😂).
I agree about the sideshoots being more vigorous
I’m a little confused when do you remove side shoots or is it suckers you’s are referring to? Wud appreciate any advice on this thanks 🍅
@@bernadettesullivan29 Yes they are called suckers in America, in the UK we call those sideshoots...Steve...😃
I've been talking about growing on sideshoots for a couple of years now, I'm quite surprised that more people have not caught on to this and use it themselves...Steve...😃
Question on onions... Hi Steve, I watched your Boxing Day onion seed sowing. Here it's been -8 at night, maybe 0 during the day for most of the month. How do you protect the seedlings even in the greenhouse from the cold? I left some outside, they died, kept some inside, they are leggy and a bit pasty looking.. what do you recommend? Thanks :)
Another great program! My daughter planted flat leaf parsley in our shared veggie garden. The plant is huge. The snow/frost doesn't seem to effect it! I like to leave the giant parsley leaves whole and drop into soups. The soup looks pretty with the giant leaves....
Whole leaves are also excellent dropped into a salad too Brenda...Steve...😃
Yes I agree with the thoughts of the side shoots. We in the US call the shoot that comes out of the 90 degree angle of a branch to the main stem a sucker and generally toss them away. However I do not, for each plant I look for one or two good ones put them in water about 10 days for roots to form then I plant them thus cloning the original plant. As these secondary plants grow I take a couple again and repeat. All of these are my succession plants each 3-4 weeks behind. If blight develops just pluck the plant and replace with the younger clone as it is healthier and more resistant. Good luck with your seedlings I am 6-8 weeks behind because of the temp but that is ok. Take care bye for now
It is a very good method, I just put mine straight into soil though and skip the placing into water step, but whatever works is good. Maybe I will try that myself this year...Steve...😃
Cheers Steve x
You are welcome Ann...Steve...😃
I got busy in the tunnel today. Lots of onions looking good after pricking out. Beetroot babies everywhere. Kale and cabbage getting going.
Very busy time of the year coming up now, I look forward to this so much...Steve...😃
Could onions be planted under a mini polytunnel now or would you advise to wait a while?
@@GreenSideUp So do I. Once it's warm enough for tomatoes and cucumber, it starts getting hectic
@@MrCobbsalad I find onions love tunnels. I got better ones than outside last year, but weather was different. I also find dates on package can be changed to your area. No harm trying a few. I even like losses, as teaches me lessons.
Really like the format Steve, and looking forward to following the sowings for the kitchen garden. Will be definitely be sowing some of those along with you and love the tomato cordon planting idea - so will have a go at that too. Many thanks.
I lost all my tomatoes last year to blight so I’ve bought lots of crimson crush after your recommendation & definitely going to plant the side shoots too. Great tip 👍🏻
Amazing collection of herb seeds Steve. I went through all mine last week. January is such a depressing long month that going through your seeds is the best way to lift your spirits for the new season ahead.
Your idea of companion planting beds sound lovely. Definitely following your lead on that 😊 can’t wait
Hi Jo, I have planted up and grown Kitchen garden beds before quite a few times and they are great, what I have not tried though is doing it with a combination of all edibles in one bed, where some of the edibles are companion plants and then another bed with edibles and just herbs. It will be interesting and educational for me and hopefully for viewers too. I am always ready and happy to fail and then learn from it...Steve...😃
I’ve just found your channel! What a wonderful video, so many helpful hints, thank you so much. Will definitely look forward to watching them in future.
This channel is awesome.
Hi Jan, so glad you have found us and that you are sticking around too...Steve...😃
many thanks steve good info about seeds
Thanks Martyn...Steve...😃
Love your idea about tom side shoot planting - will take on this year!
It works very well, especially if the tomato mother plant is an early fruiting variety...Steve...😃
Lovely video Steve, I really like White Lisbon, we are eating it now as it happens, Must be my sandy soil, although I prefer Guardsman as its less floppy! By the way, when do you find your mature carrots start going to seed? : all the best - Steve

Just found your channel and subscribed straight away. Thank you for your videos, you have so much experience and knowledge but it is delivered in such a gentle and empathetic way I'm sure no one could ever feel intimidated, no matter how inexperienced. I'm so looking forward to learning from your videos and improving how I utilise my home garden.
Also, I totally agree with you on flat leaf parsley issue, really can't get on with the curly stuff to me honest.
Thanks Steve, very informative 🙂
You are welcome Kim, thanks for watching...Steve...😃
Thanks again always informative 👍
Many thanks Janet...Steve...😃
Cheers Steve , infomative as ever
Many thanks Jim...Steve...😃
Hi Steve, I'm thinking of companion planting too this season, hopefully it will turn out well 🙂 love your videos, thanks for sharing & take care 🙂
Thank you Christine, best of luck with companion planting!...Steve...😃
Going to try and do some companion planting this year. It that time of year us gardeners get excited about planting seedling lol.
I've been excited about this year, since last year...but I think there is something wrong with me..."Gardeningitis" or somesuch...Steve...😃
@@GreenSideUp think where all yhe same. I love sowing seeds lol find it so relaxing
Love your channel, Steve. Being from central New Jersey in the U.S., you caught my attention with the mention of the Jersey Devil tomato. I was not familiar with it, and wouldn't have room for it in my garden this season, but would be very interested to see how you get on with it should you decide to grow it. We do love our tomatoes here in the "Garden State".
Nothing beats your own fresh homegrown tomatoes, I think everyone loves that...Steve...😃
Fab video Steve, last year I grew several herbs and as I could not possibly use them all I learnt how to dry them for the late winter months, it was much easier than I thought it would be to be honest. I had fab results ! plus I also finely chopped lots of herbs and mixed it with cold butter then wrapped them into sausage shapes by rolling in clingfilm then put them into the freezer. Quick and easy to take a slice of garlic, chive or parsley butter when needed. This year I will be infusing oil with different herbs, garlic and chilies, to put into fancy bottles for Christmas presents to go with homemade jars of jam 😊I am trying to learn lots of preserving methods this year finger crossed 🤞
Homemade gifts are so valuable and more appreciated I think, than bought ones. For my herb buitters I do the same as you but I beat the butter untill it is white or near white then combine the additives. It whips it up slightly and makes it easier to cut straight from the freezer. I have no herby butters left in the freezer, used the last on Christmas day and I think I have about a tablespoon of chopped parsley left in there too, lean times ahead !!...Steve...😃
Be careful what you put next to chard. A couple of years ago I mixed chard and celeriac but the chard was more vigorous. The poor celeriac was also hit by root fly so between pests and being shaded out by the chard, it suffered badly.
👍
Good horde of seeds Steve. Interested to see your spring onions. You've never given me a bum steer with your suggestions. I'm still harvesting broccoletto 😀😀😀
Glad to hear you like the broccoletto, the ishikura bunching onions will not let you down either, very easy to grow Eli...Steve...😃
I planted leek seeds in my greenhouse but the compost developed mould. Help!
Shallot seeds need high bottom heat to germinate as I be found out to my cost on my third attempt with with unwind F1 ambition seeds and finally germinated with heat mat
Hi Chris, thanks for that, I always go for around the teens in temperature for shallots and onions, I will have to try another test...Steve...😃
Steve ,had some onions and leeks on the windowsill for a few weeks ,can I now put them out into my cold frame ?
Barry just asked the same question, they are 3 inches high supposed to be hardy but don't want to lose them
Yes, as long as the weather is reasonably settled they will be fine. If there is frost overnight or icy temps all round then harden them off first as they wont really die but they can suffer from cold shock...Steve...😃
@@GreenSideUp ,thanks Steve
Have you grown Sungold tomatoes? I grew a plant last year for the first time from a bought small plant as I was too late to grow any from seed, bt my word they taste so sweet and tasty, so I am going to try them in the new vitopod heated propagator, as it is the 30th jan I might want to do the seeds today perhaps.
I grow Sungold every year. They are amazing. I live in us zone 8. Last year, due to unusual heat wave in NW Oregon (116 degrees) mine didn't get planted out till mid June. I had record breaking crop. They are easy and prolific, here. But of course, Steve knows beat.
Yes I have grown Sungold many times in the past, a super tomato for the reasons you mentioned, but I stopped growing them because they have a tendancy to split whilst still on the plant. None of them ever came home from the plot either, I would eat them whilst there like sweets/candy...Steve...😃
@@GreenSideUp 🤣👍
Steve are your onions and leeks still sheltered or can you put in a cold frame
Yes, as long as the weather is reasonably settled they will be fine. If there is frost overnight or icy temps all round then harden them off first as they wont really die but they can suffer from cold shock...Steve...😃
Is crimson crush blight resista t
Yes it is Ged, and early fruiting too...Steve...😃
Steve. Where can I get Tansy.
Hi John, you can get it from Premier Seeds Direct, here is a direct link and it is where I got mine from www.premierseedsdirect.com/product-category/herbs-head/tansy/. Be careful where you plant Tansy, it can self seed and its roots can grow big Rhyzomes and be difficult to remove once established...Steve...😃
@@GreenSideUp Thanks Steve.I currently grow Shoo Fly plant which keeps away white fly. That readily self seeds but is easy to pull up.
