With all the crops outside and undecover now mostly planted out, focus and thoughts turn to protecting them from pests and maintenance.

still getting those tips here for autumn winter , rip steve miss your updates but thankyour soul for leaving us these videos
Interesting vlog again Steve thanks For all advise 👍
Thank you for being considerate for the pests. I know they are a pain in the butt. But like us there only trying to survive. You have just melted my heart with your way of thinking thank you 😊 great video as usual. Thank you for sharing
Always so inspiring. Thank you. Who needs gardening books!
Hi Steve, I’ve started to use organic Neem Oil made up as a spray to deter the caterpillars and it’s working a treat. You must make sure it is organic ‘first press’ and you mix it with a natural soap and warm water. It gives the caterpillars tummy ache but all other forms of wildlife are safe from it. Also rats hate peppermint just sprinkle it around and they are gone! Good video and it’s always nice to tune in to your experience
Will try your mint idea out.
I don’t have pigeons here luckily but we do get loads of cabbage whites, hubby built me a great brassica cage but I did get some on plants not under cover. Malcolm Kingswell shakes his plants gently so I tried that and some caterpillars fell off 😂😂 squished and good to go. I’ve tried since early spring to keep on top of he slugs and been pretty successful (dropping them in a buck of soapy water kills them quickly). My nemesis are squirrels they dig up things aka beans and peas so I have to grow in starters. Mice we catch in live traps and take them off site. Thank you for sharing ✌️🇨🇦🐝 safe
All looking grand Steve. Nice to see you so relaxed! Thankyou for the advice 🙂
Great pest control & management video Steve and those pests are needing something to eat unfortunately it's the same thing we want to eat 😀. When it comes to humans versus pests, humans because of their knowledge and skill to control & manage them the pests are going to lose that war. Keep safe, well and happy gardening.
Great video Steve thanks for the great advice. Take care.
All looks good 👍
Great video, always good to know about pest and how to look after them going to look up about the slug pellets. Have followed suit this year and carried on with seed sowing let's wait and see
Yes then Steve 👍👍👍
Cheers Steve , Might try and grow lettuce in the greenhouse I made from polycarbonate sheets after transporting it and breaking all the glass, It did well for the tomato and peppers and I Still have cucumbers growing
I used the humane mousetrap last year as my garden borders fields and the greenhouse bed was being chewed. Every day for weeks I was walking up the lane to release them early so they didn’t die . Also I use those slug pellets in the green bottle I got them off Amazon and I got a refill box of pellets as well very reasonably priced.
Another very helpful episode Steve. I wish I had some of that BT my sprouts are massacred!
Great video as always. Could I ask what thickness of polytunnel cover would you recommend and when is the best time of year to recover it, would now be alright.
By whitefly, I meant to say...
Steve how do you find using BT with the rain? I haven't used it outdoors because it rains multiple times a day here so I'm not sure it'd get the chance to be useful.
I spray underside of leaves hoping it will stick even during light rain and I find most caterpillars under the leaves anyway.
I found my kale being attacked by cabbage (greyish) aphid any tips on how get rid thank you
Really interesting video as always Steve. In respect to bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki I have been looking to get some for some time but cant find anywhere. I don't know if this is correct but I found this warning on one site.
'As from 26th Novemember 2015 it is an offence for anyone to purchase pesticides authorised for professional use unless they have ensured that the intended end user holds the relevant specified cetificate(s)'.
May be there is a shortage this year or it might be that only professional growers can now buy this particular product? What do you think Steve?
If you're releasing mice in the fields anywhere near you they will just come back. They need 2+ miles to deter their return. They're the rodent equivalent of homing pigeons.
I was surprised to hear you had caterpillars on your cabbage's, I live down south and I was also surprised to find them on my Kale today, as for the "organic" slug pellets I've been using them for about 4 years, but they are expensive, the live catch rat and mouse trap i use is a long wire cage thing ( i use it because I sometimes catch a bird in it and I wouldn't want to kill them) when i catch a rat I just drop the trap in my pond for 10 mins then I dump the rat on the garden and the fox gets it, so I feed the wildlife to the wildlife.
pandemic ?
Sadly it's illegal under the wild mammals act to trap and transport rats and mice
