I am only sowing a few seeds this month, simply because I am now very well prepared for crop growing over Winter. But I still have a few to sow! At this time of the year light levels as well as temperaatures start to tumble and growing becomes difficult, but not impossible.
If you want to sow and grow vegetables at this time of the year, you can! Here is my list of recommendations to sow now.
Plant Garlic and Elephant garlic now, it will grow slowly over Winter, developing a good root system ready for a good growth spurt when temperatures warm up in Spring.
Broad Beans, many gardeners will have planted these by now and it is probably too late to try sowing direct into the ground. Sow and grow in modules trays, but get on with it sooneer than later and have them sown by mid November latest.
Lettuces, keep sowing lettuce seeds, you may well have lettuce planted and growing but they wont last the 5 months till Spring, so keep them coming!
Brassicas, This family of plants can all mostly germinate at around 7 or 8 degrees so they are a good choice for the Winter veg gardener.
Asian greens such as Pak Choi, Bok Choi, Tatsoi, Mizunas, Mustards all germinate and grow quickly at this time of the year, they will germinate much quicker if placed on a warm windowsill too.
Broccoli Raab is noted as a 60 day crop, it has a bitterness about it and is more akin to a sprouting broccoli only on much smaller plants, pick when young eat the flowers too if it does flower but at this stage the stems will be tougher. Due to it's bitterness it is best served with fattier meats.
Chard and Kale can also be sown and grown now!
Dont overlook Spring cabbage either, it may be too late to sow to get good heads of Cabbage next Spring, but if we have a prolonged warm spell mid winter they can catch up, or you can just harvest them as young plants - "Spring Greens".
Try a few Turnips and Radish too, why not!!
But do try something, this builds your knowledge for next year.
Yes, I have 3 polytunnels to grow in, you can use a cloche on your beds and get the same effect, my cloches are just a little bigger.

Watched your video, Cumbria & it’s Lake District beautiful part of the world so stay safe , south west of Scotland taking one hell of a battering with heavy rain too like Cumbria causing massive amount of flooding. So take care happy gardening.
great views of the river, you are in a lovely part of the country.
Thanks for this, will get some broad beans in pronto👍 Beautiful countryside and a lovely allotment, I'm green with envy 😁😅 and interesting views of all that water. Take care, God Bless🙏🏻💖
Stay safe Steve
Great video, Thanks Steve. So helpful as usual ☺
Thank you very much for taking time to show the river and what is currently going on . Great info as always .
Nice video Steve, 👩🌾👍
Greetings from Windermere, Florida zone 9b 🇺🇸
Here in Central Florida we are able to grow in the winter. We might have a near freeze in January.
I hope you stay safe.
Please take care and my best wishes are sent to everyone affected by the flooding. Thanks for the video and the footage of the area. Take care.
Stay safe Steve and Mrs Steve great video as always thank you from Wolverhampton
Nice video Ste . I've not been doing any seeding .been on my friends allotment a lot clearing it all . Im now his working partner so it's also my little get away now. Keep up the good work
Hi Steve, love your videos, I am now the proud owner of a 10ft x 10ft polytunnel and are looking for advice on polytunnel growing all year, looking forward to it, thank you for all your videos, take care 🙂
While others are putting the beds to 'sleep' there is still so much growing in your garden 🤗🌱 That's very inspiring 👍
That’s a lot of water you’ve got up there Steve, take care mate and stay safe David 👍👍
😱 as if you haven’t had enough to deal with for the past 18 months, hopefully everyone is safe. We have a huge river here that can flood the lower farms (Fraser River) and they go on flood watch almost yearly now. But like you we are in a higher area and so far ok. It’s been raining heavily for days but we are in a few days of sun right now. It it was down to 1c in poly tunnel last night 🥶🥶🥶. I find it’s fun just to try what the heck. Thank you for sharing ✌️🇨🇦🐝 safe stay dry
Thank you for taking the trouble to show us the river Steve. Had wondered if Cockermouth was in danger of flooding. Spent a holiday in my cousins bungalow there many years ago and remember Cockermouth well.
So glad you’re ok Steve. I did wonder this morning after watching the news. Let’s hope it stays that way 🙏🏻
climate change is real… we’ve definitely experienced it all this year alone!!! We all must do our bit.
Great vid as always. Stay safe 🙏🏻
Great video Steve and great to hear that the allotment isn't effected by flooding and hopefully the surrounding area will be OK. Great selection of seeds for sowing in November. Keep safe and well and happy gardening.
Wow, that's a lot of water!
I do love a wee trip to your polytunnel. Hope you guys are OK and fingers crossed for a dry spell 🤞
We share the same river lol I'm in Derby runs right through the city. No issues reported this time here. Hope all is well at your end.
Flooding is awful, I really feel for people whose homes and businesses are affected. We had flooding on our allotment earlier in the year after storm Christoph. Our shed had over 2 foot of water inside it and as the water receded it left behind thick sludge. It was bad enough in the shed so can only imagine how awful it must be in a house. We visited Cumbria a week after storm Desmond and the destruction was devastating, especially at Glenridding. Let's hope things don't get that bad again ever, but the force of nature can never be underestimated. Keep safe everyone especially those in Cockermouth which sadly always gets the floods.
As with most here such a beautiful yet devastating sight, let's hope it clears quickly for those effected. Thanks for the share Steve.
How devastating !!! Stay safe Steve.

Didn't realise you are just up the road from me Steve, im just in Whitehaven. Another great video mate ;-)
Your close. Sure been lots since this?
Oh, Steve, I do hope you all will stay safe from the flooding. We live in Perthshire and are getting a fair bit of rain, too, but not like you are. Dumfries was flooded a couple of days ago, just awful. Keep yourself safe.
I don't have a polytunnel or a greenhouse, but I've been sowing microgreens to keep us in fresh stuff through the winter. I'll be sowing more today.
As far as your broad beans go, why are you sowing them now, instead of late winter/early spring? I'm worried now because I'm going to grow two kinds of broad bean and borlotti beans next year, as well as peas and french dwarfs.
Hope you all stay safe and hope your town doesnt suffer too much damage due to flooding.
Ey up lad, just got back from my respite in Lakeland, grange over sands/ Lake District. I expected it to be a bit wet but this last week had some reight deluges - and a north cold wind to boot. Thanks for another good vid.
I’m making crab apple & quince jelly then I’m going to try sowing some Giant Spinach - all the best
Stay safe Steve good video as normal 👍
Hope you managed to dodge any flooding Steve.
The rain has been horrendous up her for about the last 10 days. Thankfully the forecast is looking a lot better for the next wee while
Great update. Nice reminder of what to sow. Channel of the year in my view ! Hope the floods abate soon. Whatever happened to the builders bucket challenge?
just a thought steve. why not plant your lettuce seedling very close. draw the plants. you won't get any extra leaves, but a longer juicy stem to include with the leaves when you cut every other plant leaving the rest to grow as you intended. if i get some seeds to germinate, i might have a go myself....................brian
My garlic was planted out 2 weeks ago and the green stem is about 2 inches above ground.
Your video of the flooding makes me feel ashamed of myself for whingeing about the rain down here on the south coast. Puts things into perspective. Thanks for taking the footage.
you stay safe there is plenty of pictures on the TV of the river
Lettuce in winter do well in hanging baskets. It allows the soil to warm up easier, plus cold air drops to the ground.
Good idea gowing to try
Sundays weather aint looking good either. Got my Arc ready just in case.
Hows the river? We have had lots of rain since this vid?
😲😲😲😲😬😬😬😬xxxx Sunderland Linds xxxxx ❤️❤️❤️❤️
It’s quite scary how much rain we are getting already this year , I’m in Cornwall and it’s been horrendous , but October in general was warmer than May, Not sure how next year’s growing season will turn out. But thanks for all your tips and advice Steve.
TBH the rain is normal. It's the super dry years I worry about like we had in 2020 and 2018
Rain rain rain we complain . If it was drought, we might pull our finger out.
