With Chinese Cabbage, I have not grown them for a couple of years, but when I have grown them before I had great sucess. I was told never to transplant them as they hate root disturbance so I started mine in cell trays. I'll buy a packet and sow them again. Great video again Steve.
i have to say mate your the only one who says about the future of the economy how expensive compost is going to be because compost is the most expensive thing in gardening even i with a small garden feels the pinch so thank you

Great video Steve - it's given me some good ideas of what to sow next. It's been such a weird season, with more than a few failures, so it's encouraging to know we can all keep on growing! With your new tunnel up & running I'm sure you're going to have a very productive winter - here's hoping for a mild one!

Late August I always sow Japanese onions (Senshui) they make really good onions in June/ July when my maincrop store is empty. Probably the most valued vegetable I grow.... like your channel, pleased to have found it.
Like all ur vegetables you plant I am now trying to plant beetroot and carrot I will do it your way.

Hi Steve. I bought some Lidl radish seed Riesenbutter, absolutely huge. No bolting.
Good stuff,I am off outside now to sow some lettuce,beetroot and spring onion after watching this. Light rain is on its way so good time to sow. My radish mostly went to seed as well. It's just the way it is : )
Good to see you don't get disheartened by failures and keep trying, or have a tweak with the process to see if it makes a difference, which it usually does.
Carrots and tomatoes were my nemesises (? 😂) to begin with.
I'd overwater them and they'd split, just before harvesting.
Slugs used to murder my lettuces, 'til I began planting them in plastic guttering, hung off the ground.
Knock backs put a lot of gardeners off and that's a pity.
Trial and error is actually fun, if you get your mind in the right place.
As for sieving compost, I've always used my fingers to determine what gets chucked back in the compost to rot down further.
If it's crushable and yields it goes in, providing it isn't a twig.

13:30 I had no idea until recently, beetroot "seeds" are actually a pod containing 4 seeds. I definitley agree that multisowing might not be the best idea in this case!

I did my oniins over winter, i put mine in to a big pot and left them in the greenhouse till feb and put them out worked well fof me
Sieving must also add air, which is good. I sowed a Courgette and a butternut squash in February in my South facing conservatory. It was an experiment to see what would kill them. They proved me wrong and flourished, I do use grow lights plus usually use the heat from the house at night to keep them at or above 10 degrees C by opening a door to the house (central heating is off). I had a good sized butternut on the plant and courgette in May. I planted them out in mid May under fleece, but they were not totally happy as May was very cold. Courgette is producing but May took the vigor out of it. The butternut sulked for a while, so I removed the butternut. It is now very happy large and with lots of butternuts. I like to push boundaries you learn a lot by doing so and improve the care of your plants. Will do this again next year.

Hi Steve I just subscribed! I like your laid back style and how you explain everything, very encouraging too! Your polytunnel is every gardeners dream, we hope to get one but need ground work first. We've also just moved and have more ground to plant but it's all wild grass, rocks, docks, rocks, hogweed and did I mention rocks?! haha, we'll be building some stone walled raised beds I think!
I sow my overwintering onion seed direct into my raised bed in Sept I put between 6 and 10 seeds for spring onions and 4 to 6 for my normal onions all are white Lisbon, also if your radish bolt wait for the seeds pods and eat them in a salad they are delicious

Fantastic seeds for sowing in August. Sorry to hear that radishes haven't been doing too well this year Steve but I wouldn't give up on them and the video was excellent 👍 Good point not to insist on sowing seeds by the packet instructions because nature isn't dependent on seed sowing by dates on a seed packet.

Hi Steve I’m Tony , just building a raised bed in my car parking area as I live in a flat and have no land or garden I have a strip of very weedy land where my raised bed will be now can I lay old carpet in the base so I don’t have to dig as my back is not good hence the raised bed look forward to your advice it’s 23 inches deep 6x2’
I'm a newbie to your video's and gardening, you make it look so easy. What do you do with all of your produce?
I had a similar issue with growing spring onions over winter - I found that using seeds for Welsh Onions gives me a better success that those labelled spring onions.
I've had so much bolting this year - spinach, rocket, Tat Choi, Pac Choi, komatsuma, chard. Bees have loved it though with those I left to flower.
I've a stack full of seeds I;ll be sowing this week,
I have managed over wintering with only two spring onions which are Lillia and North Holland Red, better than red onion sets less bolting.
I have no success with beetroot, although I’ve not tried boltardy. All I’ve managed to grow this year is a few thin seedlings that refuse to bulk up. Yes, they’ve been watered!
I recommend the Boltardy.
Been growing it six years now and as a variety it's never let me down.
Would be nice to know where you are located. I am in a Stage 4 watering restrictions area where I cannot water ANYTHING (August 12th). So what to seed?

Let the radish flower and then you can eat the seed pods in a salad. They give a hot kick!
