  • Traditional Onion Sowing | Tradition or not? | Best way to sow onions | Green Side Up
    Boxing day is the traditional day for sowing onion seeds, or is it? There is much debate about this but I believe it is tradition, watch the video to find out why, also discover why it is too early to sow leeks and shallots, a mistake many people make at this time of the year.
    ONION SPECIAL I was part of a whole hours live discussion about growing Onions along with Jb and Tony Smith on the Potty Mouth Garden Club here • Potty Mouth Boxing Day... this is a discussion and live question and answer video one hour long, its not to be missed !

    Hey Steve, I agree it is more important to know when you need your plants ready and what you will do with them and then you can calculate back to find the best day to start them. You may grow them for eating by a particular date and to show them on a different date. So you will need to start them on different dates to arrive maturity on your target date.
    Here in Minnesota US I have a short growing season 155 days so I have to start veg that can finish be harvested while leaving enough time for another veg to be transplanted in and harvested all with in 155 days! It is like an air traffic controller for the garden.

    Hi we don’t have a window in our kitchen it’s a galley kitchen with French doors at the end leading to our postage stamp garden. So I have to use all of the rest of the windowsills. I grew onions from seed for first time last year and I grew Bedfordshire champion and they were amazing so I growing a lot more this year. I have planted onion sets in October wen I planted garlic. I don’t use that much garlic but we eat or use hundreds of onions in a year. They go into everything I cook almost. Thanks steve for your advice and fantastic information. Hey Kim the past few years I have been emptying most of my hanging baskets and pots and mix them together 50/50 with new compost then refill the container / pot. Bought bagged Compost is just a growing medium and generally feeds your plants for about six weeks. After that it is still (or should be) a good growing medium but will require some feed adding to it for the next plants you grow in it. Some Fish blood and bone or growmore will recharge it or mixing in some well rotted manure or other compost. It is an ideal medium for germinating seeds in, seeds have everything they need within that little shell to start growing and push up to the cotylodens (seed leaves or first leaves), after that they will need some feed to continue to photosythesize and grow. So your choice then is to either give them feed at the start so they can continue growing in that old compost or to prick them out into some good fesh compost....Steve...🙂

    • @GreenSideUp
      @GreenSideUp  Год назад +1

      It is important to not go too big between potting on, pot on in to modules, then when the roots grow out of the bottom of those go one size up and pot on again. You want young plants to start to outgrow the container they are in so they are drinking the moisture in that container, if thay sit in too big a container they will be too wet and will never use all that moisture and can actually drown, so dont miss out the important potting on process....Steve...🙂
