    It's time for a quick catch up and more information on the trial in my third polytunnel. I am trying a commercial approach to feeding the plants in there and the early signs are very very promising. I also discuss very lightly about NPK and its importantance in knowing about it for your plants.

    Great info! Like you I feed my tomatoes daily previously with tomorite. This year however I'm using the Nutrigrow that came with my new quadgrow planters. Really impressive growth and I've got fruit earlier than usual, even on my heirloom Italian oxheart, which is slow to get going. I'm up on the Solway coast. The shocker are the leftover Tom's I've put in pots outside. They usually do really poorly but this year I'm giving them the Nutrigrow and they are definitely smaller than the greenhouse gang but are full of flowers and really strong looking. After watching your informative video, I looked up the nutrient profile Bottle A:

    Part of the reason why shop ferts are cheap and less npk is money if commercial blends like master blend were the same price as normal over the counter ferts the commercial fert companies wouldn't exist its the dollar but there's another catch that some commercial blends especially New ones will always be trialed commercialy before it ever gets to home gardeners thats also why price is higher as well

      Watery tomatoes are generally because they've been picked shortly after watering. A tip for picking tomatoes is to not water until the point of slight stress. The plant will use all of its essential sugars nutrients and proteins and end up within the fruit instead of just water circulating the plant and going into the fruit.

    • @GreenSideUp
      @GreenSideUp  2 года назад

      Hi Derek, all the flavour should be there. Shop bought tomatoes are picked and packed green then artificially ripened with ethylene gas to make them look red and ripe, it is the ripening on the plant that develops the flavour...Steve...🙂

  • @reggie5
    @reggie5 2 года назад

    I have been using rock phosphate which I originally bought to support carrots but the bag was so big I chucked it into the hole with my tomatoes too. It is supposed to be slow release, so far the tomato fruits are looking really healthy on it. Otherwise I was struggling to find any off the shelf fertiliser that had a good high PK ratio (like the masterblend) and wasn't just focussed on the N. I wonder if consumer blends are limited for environmental reasons of some kind?

  • @trevorpowell9544
    @trevorpowell9544 2 года назад +2

    Could the really high P.K impair the flavour of the tomato? as shop bought tomatoes generaly dont taste of much or is that down to the breed of tomato they use. just wonder if a fast ripening fruit gives less taste to a slower ripening fruit.

    • @saltytree729
      @saltytree729 2 года назад +1

      No on the contrary it will increase the flavour. Most supermarket tomatoes are actually picked green and force fed ethylene gas. This gives the illusion they are ripe as ethylene gas makes the tomatoe turn red... However it actually couldn't be further from the truth. You are basicslly eating a green thick walled tomato that's been painted red. No flavour has developed yet and is probably still 2 or 3 weeks away from being ripe.
      Now farmers markets are where you should be getting your tomatoes from. Whether they use organic or inorganic fertalisers it won't matter they are well cared for and picked ripe and they will taste fantastic.

    Hi Steve, enjoyed the video, my only thoughts on the commercial growers is imo they grown for the masses in bulk and what we get in the shops suffers in the flavour department! So I will be more than interested in your findings. For the time being I will stick with the old methods 🤔

    • @saltytree729
      @saltytree729 2 года назад +7

      Hi Alan I am the person in the video he is referring too and I have grown commercial for years. Commercial just means to sell or make a profit. I've worked in organic hoop houses and also conventional hoop houses and both places sold tomatoes at market farms.
      Now tomatoes at market farms taste better than anything sold at a supermarket. Supermarket picked tomatos are picked green and force fed ethylene gas to force ripen them. Essentially you're eating a green tomato turned red.
      You won't taste much difference atall if any from tomatoes picked and sold at farmers markets! If you have a local one next to you that's where you need to buy from. Not supermarket

    • @GreenSideUp

      The idea with using masterblend is to use it from the start and as the plant grows the mix gets stronger. I started using it partway through this season to see what it is like. This is why I want to run the whole test again next year starting from very small plants. This is why I said that using masterblend is an expensive thing to use, and why I am doing the test and recording it on video so that others dont have to get involved in it and spend the money, not knowing. I hope to do a breakdown of costs later in the year, then do the whole thing again next year, uless the costs are truly massive!...Steve...🙂

    Hi, Steve I'm growing Brad's atomic & Barry's crazy legs. Funny looking plants leaves seem to curl up a bit. And I've got some of the plants splitting in two I have never seen that before. I've got Master blend but not sure how to use it 🙈been making Comfrey & nettle tea this year as well. I've noticed my Tom's have plenty of growth but not many flowers?

    I Have Lots Of Flowers On My Tomatoes, No Fruit
    Is This Ok?

    • @GreenSideUp
      @GreenSideUp  2 года назад +1

      Hi Debbie, Tomatoes go through different stages of growth, there is the vegetative stage (green growth) then the blooming stage (Flower production) then the fruiting stage, it sounds like you are just between the last two. Start feeding a high potash feed to encourage the plants to start making fruits. That is the "K" part of NPK, Tomorite is a good ell known one in the UK but any good feed labeled as "Tomato Feed" will work...Steve...🙂
