  • What to sow in August? My top picks of seeds I'm sowing that you can too! That’s what we’re talking about today… because maybe you’re wondering ‘what should I sow this month?’ AND I’m going to recommend one seed, that if you sow nothing else, you need to sow this!
    Check out my website at www.niallgardens.com for show notes and the seed list from this month!
    For 5% discount off your seed purchases from Seeds Ireland, click here: seedsireland.ie/niallgardens I get asked so often where I get my seeds from, or if I can recommend a source… All of Seeds Ireland’s seeds are certified organic and open pollinated and you're supporting independent Irish business. I’ve found their germination rates to be great and highly recommend them!

      This is the first year I've ever planted something after spring and things are growing real good with this nice warm weather I planted more corn in July and when my social security check comes in 10 days I'm going to buy some more seeds of carrots lettuce and kale and chives and I believe I will able to harvest some as they're growing and the later half of September and October and maybe partly into November I'm looking forward to it because I've been starving for two or three weeks every month while waiting for my social security check I work hard all my life doing concrete work and they took money out for Social Security I would really be in a mess if I didn't get Social Security it's not near enough to keep a roof over my head and eat I have two adult Rottweilers I think I'll plant some extra carrots for them one of them likes to dig them up and eat them😆

    Little tip on lambs lettuce , I leave some go to seed every year in the poly tunnel and haven’t had the need for sowing it again ( bad news for seed companies)for the last 10 years . It comes up better when self seeded , we always have lots of it late winter early spring and it grows in the more I in disturbed areas close to the plastic of the poly tunnel

    I've started my Black Magic Kale, Spinach and Swiss Chard in containers (my first year growing stuff). The important thing for me this autumn is that they grow fast, and can be harvested multiple times 😁. Radishes are the first things I ever planted and they'll always be one of my favourites, so colourful and cute. They grow like weeds and taste fantastic, I eat every part of it, from roots to leaves.

    • @niallgardens

    • @jvp9703
      @jvp9703 2 года назад +2

      @@bernadettesullivan29 I mostly put the leafy bits in soups and stews to make them nice and tender, or even straight up blanch and eat them as a side dish (probably not for everyone though since older leaves can be somewhat woody. My mum doesn't like texture from the leftover prickles 😅). Sometimes I nip the baby ones to put in my salads, since they still have that radishy they taste. Good for adding that extra little kick if you don't like rocket leaves.

    Hi Niall, can I just ask, what do you do with your bolted plants? Compost bin, feed to chickens if you have them, or do you leave and collect seed? All my crops bolted too, so this video is great because I'm a blow-in to Ireland from northern Scotland, so used to a different climate and feeling a bit "lost" as to what I can grow here in Autumn or for the hungry gap.

    • @niallgardens
      @niallgardens  3 года назад

      What I've done is picked off any of the small, edible leaves off the spinach and pak choi which is a fiddly fiddly job! 😂 Then I've pulled them out of the soil and they've gone into the composter. We don't have chickens at the minute, but we hope to! Once we do, they can have the bolted plants. Whereabouts in Scotland are you from?

We have Brahmas (the giants of the chook world,) Wyandottes and Swedish Flower Hens..if you've got near neighbours don't get the Swedes...they're superloud! Also spent two decades living on the Orcadian Isle of Sanday where gardening is a huge challenge! Salt in the air and no trees to buffer the ever blowing winds! Beautiful but, though. :)
      Ireland's changeable climate is throwing me a curve, what with it raining a lot but being humid at the same time. And I'm growing pumpkins for the first time in my life! I generally go with a mix of both strategies because at this time of year, both will be successful 👍

    i find it baffling how so many have a garden and dont use it to grow food and will complaiin about the price of food going up. well derrrrrr..... look!!!! a garden!!! yes ...grow stuff. (not to mention the fact that compost and plant food can also be made for free in a garden. when i say garden i dont mean those linear minimalistic corporate designs full of grey paint and smooth concrete surfaces.
