Hi Gary , My best teacher , Ive followed you now several years and if you remember, I even bought our own heat mats & Lights just like yours, Had my 1st plant sale to help our community with my granddaughters for only $1-$2 a plant plus gave alot to many parents to teach the children, Then last October 2022 i required emergency back fusion & caught SEPSIS was on IV Rocephin for 7 weeks , Im worse then b4 the surgery and i will be 58 next month , but with the help of our sons, dils , granddaughters we got our plants going this year , But this Texas heat has really damaged alot of our friends gardens , My husband put shade cloth up back in june which helped and bought me a rolling seat on thick 10inch wheels for me to get around down by our property , Found 2 tomato horn worms sunday , they stripped 2 plants in 10 hours , so glad I caught them , We are getting ready to start our 3rd round of many things with this 106-107 temps , But will be starting my fall gardens also , I get my onion starts from Dixondale farms to plant end of November or beginning of December, with our economy & shortages we must all just keep planting .. You are the best , I follow your book and used your 2inch pots again 2nd yr in a row with the trays , many times . God bless you & your family sir . Mrs josette Tharp Montgomery County, Texas
This year I had some volunteer parsley seeds come up from plants that were there two years ago. It's curley parsley, which I found I didn't use enough, so I didn't plant again, but they came up really full. However, the ones that self seeded in the sunflower row are still tiny. What's so much fun is finding Parsley Caterpillars on my plants, which turn into Eastern Black Swallowtail Butterflies, one of my favorite butterflies! I have seen 6 Parsley Caterpillars, so far, and several Black Swallowtails. I even found a Monarch caterpillar munching on my Milkweed the other day...and I'd never seen one here before. So much fun watching out for nature in the garden and knowing I have the right habitat for them to flourish! 🦋🐞🐝

I love your channel and have learned sooooo much. I haven't watched for awhile. I fractured my back about a week before my seedlings were due to be planted in the spring. They all died because I couldn't look after them, and I couldn't get them in the ground. I'm still not up for a fall planting but I am so looking forward to spring and hoping next year to be able to get back at it. Thank you so much for everything you taught me. Last year was my first garden and it was a HUGE success with much thanks to you.
Sending healing thoughts. Also I would be drinking Comfrey tea or soaking in it or placing Comfrey poultices on my back (or all three). Comfrey's nickname is "knit-bone".
@@emilybh6255 Awe, thank you. I am on the mend. Able to walk short distances now. Soon hoping to be able to drive again. Yes, there has been a lot of lovely cups of tea in my life over the past several months. Also lots of ice and heat packs. I'm getting there and I am very hopeful for next spring's garden.

Mostly, I'm starting seeds indoors right now. So anxious for my Fall garden! :) We don't get frost until January, so I'll have plenty of time.

My peppers are really struggling this year. The plants are small, still. I put row cover over them to keep them warm at night, but shaded from the intense afternoon sun. We have had a lot of rain and a cooler than usual start... but this is August. They should have gotten a growth spurt by now like my tomatoes and squash finally did. Very disappointing. I may try another round of carrots and beets, plus add some parsnips. I may also plant some cabbages. Good to know we can still grow some herbs, too.

Thanks for the inspiring video. I got started late this season and then was knocked off my feet with Covid. Though I'm moving slowly and my garden is in a discouraging state, I'm so thankful to be able to get outside to pull weeds and conquer squash bugs. Just like life, the garden grows onward. I'll be planting for fall soon. I hope to see your fall garden.
I love this video. This is definitely a "future calendar" entry - to come back and watch this at the end of next July, to plan properly for fall crops. Thank you Gary!
Gary, thank you so much for your videos. You do such a great job of teaching me / us in a way that leaves no room for confusion. Even more, thank you for posting the information on your blog! You have saved me So Much Time in note-taking and that, in itself, is priceless. Thanks again and namaste.
Gary, didn't you just say the other day on a perks call you were tired??!!😁 Isn't it funny that as gardeners we just need a short break then ready to go again!! Looks like you will have an awesome fall garden!!
Really helpful video. Zone 7A NY here. I was recently digging potatoes some of which had gone green and started to sprout. I didn't discard them, but set them aside thinking, maybe I can replant these and get a second crop -- thanks for confirming. You have definitely inspired me to get out there and continue planting.

This year has been weird. Usually my tomatoes do well but this year, kind of scraggly. I fertilized with fish emulsion and when they bloomed, phosphorus, about every 7-10 days, but dayrime temps were in the 80's, night time 55-65. Pepper plants didnt get very big. Cucumbers thrived! Just a strange year. Butternuts are always good. Thanks for your time. I give a lot of mine to you! Heart❤😊

I so wish that gardeners would put in their title and posters as well. I’m in Zone 4. First frost in mid-Sept and winters get down to -35F for a few weeks and below zero most of the winter. Unless I had nothing else to do, it’s a waste of my time to watch a gardener in Zones 6 to 9 unless it’s a subject not relative to temp or length of season. TIA

You didn't mention broccoli or cauliflower. Thoughts? I am going to try them for a fall harvest (broccolini instead of standard) - first frost avg, anytime after Oct 1 is possible. But last few years it's come much later. Gonna roll the dice and see what goes.
If you wanted to do one pea plant per container, what's the smallest size container you'd use? I have a bunch of smaller pots and grow bags (1-3 gallon) that I'm trying to decide what to use them for.
1 gallon is fine. The keys is keeping up on watering. I have a question I live in Gallatin Tennessee and I want to know what vegetables that I can still plant August 26th of your 35 plants that you mention that can be planted in August. Please anyone that would have an answer I would appreciate it very much.
I'm here in Lebanon and just planted mustard greens, arugula, cilantro, bush beans and going to try some collards, lettuce, bunching onion, and spinach in a week or so with some protection. Im also experimenting with some Roma tomatoes...fast growing and determinate. Just as he is saying, plant some one week, then some more the next etc. Our first frost this year should be around Oct. 24. Just experiment and see what you get.
Really is crazy. Shade cloth can help but the heat is so intense. I’m zone 8b, planting most of these in August on shady East side garden ( morning sun afternoon shade) mulched with straw or fresh wood chips ( grinding from my garden, September/october I’ll second plant these on north side, I do use shade cloth and build 2 fr tall hot beds for winter , raising the soil temp throughout the winter
They do but what I am finding is it is early growth of the plant and once tall, there isn't much issue. Like when the plant is competing for root space. However, this is not scientific and it's not every plant. The close tomatoes were effected. But we will see. Cheers.

Hi Gary , My best teacher ,
Ive followed you now several years and if you remember, I even bought our own heat mats & Lights just like yours,
Had my 1st plant sale to help our community with my granddaughters for only $1-$2 a plant plus gave alot to many parents to teach the children,
Then last October 2022 i required emergency back fusion & caught SEPSIS was on IV Rocephin for 7 weeks ,
Im worse then b4 the surgery and i will be 58 next month , but with the help of our sons, dils , granddaughters we got our plants going this year ,
But this Texas heat has really damaged alot of our friends gardens ,
My husband put shade cloth up back in june which helped and bought me a rolling seat on thick 10inch wheels for me to get around down by our property ,
Found 2 tomato horn worms sunday , they stripped 2 plants in 10 hours , so glad I caught them ,
We are getting ready to start our 3rd round of many things with this 106-107 temps ,
But will be starting my fall gardens also ,
I get my onion starts from Dixondale farms to plant end of November or beginning of December, with our economy & shortages we must all just keep planting ..
You are the best , I follow your book and used your 2inch pots again 2nd yr in a row with the trays , many times .
God bless you & your family sir .

I agree and yes parsley is loved by the swallowtail.

I have lettuce growing under my pole beans that I have picked from since May and it still isn’t bitter. It’s a red oak leaf variety. My romaine bit the dust about 3 weeks ago but it lasted several months as well!

I was able to pick my buttercrunch through some of July and it never turned bitter. I'm in AL, so it died the end of July when the heat get very intense and there was no rain. I couldnt keep it watered
You are right. The heat, insects, and diseases have me wanting to throw in the towel.
I got so discouraged sometimes, but it's great listening to you, I am trying again. Thanks!!❤.

I'm getting there and I am very hopeful for next spring's garden.
good luck with healing and best of luck for next year!

I love your videos and learn a lot. Here in Florida 9b we are so hot and humid that I'm taking your ideas and postponing them a couple of weeks, and will use shade cloth. Mostly, I'm starting seeds indoors right now. So anxious for my Fall garden! :) We don't get frost until January, so I'll have plenty of time.
Thanks so much and that is a great strategy for Florida. It's just too hot.

Glad I saw this…I guess I’ll start my broccoli, squash, zucchini seeds indoors. I’m in lower MS and it’s so hot but at least I got rain yesterday. Keep growing👍🏻
Florida, Hastings area. My dad was a cabbage farmer, he would start his seed bed first of September. I helped another farmer grow sweet onions, he started the seeds for his sets middle of September.
Days here are 107-109. Spring garden produced very little, it got hot and dry early. Weather people are saying no end in sight. Texas is on fire
It is so nice to see that you are having the same struggles as a gardening expert that I’m going through. Thanks for showing that, it gives me a ton of inspiration to get at a fall planting! ❤
Glad to show a garden how it actually looks at time. Don't get discouraged!

I know this sounds silly but I like that you put the seeds on top of the soil and push them in. I’ve always had a problem with making holes and dropping in the seeds. And now that I am suffering with compression fractures in my back. Your method will make my life so much easier. Thank you
It's a good way to do it.

My goal is to grow carrots this fall. And some cucumbers to pickle. Maybe some peas (I’m the only one who will eat them in the family) and I never had fresh garden peas.
I grow them to eat off the vine like garden candy. 😋
You are in for a treat! I don't even LIKE peas...except from the vine.
When I was as growing up my h
Dad planted climbing peas beans etc. between the corn and let the corn provide trellising for them.
Going to throw a few seeds in today 😊
I think it is worth it.

It has been a tough weather year in many gardens

I've had issues with the sweet peppers, they just won't grow. The hot pepper varieties have been booming though.
It has been a problem everywhere and not just the weather but tomatogate and pepper gate with people getting the wrong plants and wrong seeds.
This was REALLY helpful! I did not know that I could go ahead and do some of those veggies! THANK YOU!!!!

22 of the varieties have germinated already.
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Holy moly. You're going to have a delicious, fresh fall and early winter!

It's extremely important for all those folks who make videos like these WHERE YOU ARE. LOCATION. Because very few of these will grow in zone 5b Illinois. I be lucky to get anything to grow. As of lately weather has become very cold at night.
its on my RUclips channel on the banner. It says Maryland Zone 7. And I do say many times in videos I am in Maryland. Often say you have to adjust you time. Sometimes people dont watch the whole video and miss information.

Heart❤😊

Good tips. Any suggestions on labeling. Everytime I write on those label markers with permanent markers it always get fsded.
Write both sides and face on side east and the other west. Less southern sun and they last. Or use a black grease pencil.

I'm going to plant a bunch of diacon radish, everywhere I don't already have something planted, and leave it in the soil all winter to break up my clay Oregon😊 soil.
It feeds the soil too.
Thats a great idea.

TIA
😊 1:11 😊 2:33 7😮😊
Thanks for the great info! I have your book on order! Can’t wait to get it!😊Regina

I have never successfully grown fennel. Are there any videos on growing it on TRG?
Not specifically. But it does well as a transplant in the spring. The heat so summer kills it so again in the fall.

Great inspiring video! I’m in NEPA and am trying to see what works for me. Can I ask where did you get your 10 gallon planters from, they look so sturdy. Would Remay work as a shade cloth?
Anything can work for shade cloth. The fabric 10 gallons are something we sell at my shop.

You didn't mention broccoli or cauliflower. Thoughts? I am going to try them for a fall harvest (broccolini instead of standard) - first frost avg, anytime after Oct 1 is possible. But last few years it's come much later. Gonna roll the dice and see what goes.
They got a cameo with the cabbage. Shorter days to maturity varieties are great by seed. But I tend to plant them as transplants.
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN I apologize for the miss. Good grief! 😉
Have at it. You can always throw an extra blanket over them if it gets really cold. Many lovely blessings to everyone everywhere
If you wanted to do one pea plant per container, what's the smallest size container you'd use? I have a bunch of smaller pots and grow bags (1-3 gallon) that I'm trying to decide what to use them for.
1 gallon is fine. The keys is keeping up on watering.

Hey Gary! I bought Black Krim tomato seeds from you. How do I contact you regarding what they produced.
Gary what zone are you in in Maryland❓I know I should know that by now, lol 😂
What do you think of this electroculture that's going around?
I live in Texas , it's been 109 for like 2 months and it will be over 102 for another month , there is NOT A SEED Out there that will grow now
Really is crazy. Shade cloth can help but the heat is so intense.

The struggle is real!! I’m wondering - it’s so extra- if you seed start indoors- get them some legs and transplant?
South Florida is still too hot too. Tropical fruit is all that survives at this point. "Standard" garden seeds will sprout but the plants will die.
Use hay as mulch around the base of plant for shade control and retain as much moisture as possible
I thought you said sunflowers stunt growth on nearby plants.
They do but what I am finding is it is early growth of the plant and once tall, there isn't much issue. Like when the plant is competing for root space. However, this is not scientific and it's not every plant. The close tomatoes were effected. But we will see. Cheers.
What zone is this planting schedule?
