      I agree! There's a lot of people where I live that get puppies for their children for gifts, & then when they get bigger they put them outside all day in 90+ degree weather, & will just put water out in the morning. (And by 11am it's hot to the touch! ) ive been known to go to several neighbors houses & put ive in their dogs bowls, several times a day in the past....

    What I learned from from this video I didn't know before:
    * adding excessive nitrogen to nitrogen producing plants (like many legumes) results in more leaf growth and less fruit/veg growth.
    * using a 1ft plank of wood is a quick and easy way to engage in square foot gardening.
    * leaving the plank over carrot seeds makes germination easier and with greater success.
    * BT is a great organic spray for brassicas
    * Tuck is a not so secret vegetarian!

    You can create plant splints to heal damaged plants. First, position the stem back together as tightly as possible, then wrap the damaged area in seran wrap. Splint the stem with popsicle sticks, and use packaging tape to bind it together so it's immobile. Then, shade the plant from direct sun for a few days until the plant heals well enough to transport nutrients passed the damaged area. Leave the splint on for about a week until the healed area is strong enough to endure stress.
    I've done this a number of times, and it has always worked.

    • @gwendyrose8905
      @gwendyrose8905 4 года назад +1

      I had a tomato this season that I accidentally split part of the main stem about 18 or so inches from the ground. :( I didn't have any popsicle sticks so I just used some floral tape I happened to have. It worked like a charm! Funny how we use band-aids for our own wounds, but don't always think about using "plant band-aids" as much. They are usually even better at healing than we are. :)

    • @laurensimonelli5654
      @laurensimonelli5654 4 года назад

      @@gwendyrose8905 Just like the human vascular system, a plant's vascular system is quick to repair. Repairing a damaged plant is very similar in concept to grafting.
      You bring up a good point about using popcicle sticks, though. I use them to secure the break, but it's not always necessary or feasible, especially for breaks in small stems.
      In your case, you also had another option. Tomato plants are very quick to create new root systems. I'm sure you've noticed they are 'hairy'. These hairs are called trichomes, and they have a dual purpose. They help to dissuade pests from feeding on the plant, but they are also able to sense conditions that are appropriate for root growth.
      Tomato plants are creepers, and their natural growth cycle is to spread along the ground and set roots as they expand.
      If you were to bury a broken branch from a tomato plant, it will propagate new roots.

    Hello from New Hampshire! Great tips- Thank you! Our gardens are taking a hit from all the rain. My woodland garden has better drainage, so hopefully it will dry out. I want to plant more squash to try and fool the squash bugs. They are numerous in our main garden, despite hand picking. Planted tomatoes in the woodland garden to avoid the horn worms. Have not seen any, but have a butterfly net to catch any of the moths.

They are still good in spring once I can get them out of the soil. I pull them all out in April. Super sweet. I live in Buffalo NY USA, so I am aware of cold.

I just did bush beans, carrots, sugar snap peas, lettuce, kale, spinach, Swiss chard, onions, cucumbers, zucchini, yellow crooked neck summer squash, and I started seeds for broccoli and cauliflower inside in July, and still going to plant garlic too! This is my first garden this year! Spring crops didn't do the best with the late frost then fast 90s. But my summer crops are doing AMAZING!! I did multiple varieties of everything we eat and it's all doing awesome! I was so scared I wouldn't get it to work but it's so true to just try and you might be surprised! I just had to learn to can and preserving because we have overwhelming amounts! 🥰

    Once the late summer/fall sown carrots are up a few inches, I mulch them. Once the really cold weather arrives I add a lot more mulch. The carrots will also grow more slowly in the shorter daylight. I have harvested carrots as late as New Year's Day (zone 7 a/b South Jersey). The ground was frozen, but the carrots were still really good!

    I like pellets for carrots. I tried strips for carrots, (and lettuce). I had little luck. Tried in with pellets and they worked well. More spendy yes but since I have a small area it is worth it. The seeds I send to a Church work in Zambia. Then I send open pollination because I can get much more and they have several hectors to plant.

    Very good information. I’ve been hit and miss with some plantings, always wondered why. You explain so well.
    Thanks 🙏

    Thank you so much. I planted a lot of these vegetables in totes sitting in chairs. Very helpful for my old bones. Only gets 4-5 hours direct sunlight but still hoping to get some produce. Any way it was an unforgettable experience to sit in a chair and plant seeds at eye level then watch them grow.
    Thank you for your excellent videos.

    Hey James excellent video!!!I have a few questions #1 what do you recommend night time temps are before planting spinach and brassicas #2 what do you mean when you say “ inoculate” the beans before planting. #3 do you use any kind of hoops for a “ low tunnel” to help extend. Also I wanted to let you know I don’t think you were being greedy at all!! Your post storm video helped me try to have a more positive attitude when bad things happen. Thank you Tuck and James!!

    😂 I just came in from staring at my empty garden space pondering what I can plant after finishing up cleaning the aftermath of the storm.
    Also, we made a raised 4x4 bed for the kids to start learning to grow veggies and hopefully getting excited to eat their veggies.
    We planted 3 squares of radish, chard and lettuce. And couldn’t decide what to plant in the rest of the space. Was overthinking wanting to set the kids up to get the rewarding taste of a successful garden. Also, couldn’t get any spinach seeds along with many other seeds this year...
    BUT We’ll be back out planting the rest of the space with what seeds we do have tomorrow morning.
    THANK YOU for your suggestions!
    P. S. I try to watch your videos with the kids and they get so excited to see Tuck! So cute!

    Thank you. I really get a lot of good information from your videos. I’m in RI so I’m in a colder zone. I came from MD so I’m trying to adjust to the RI growing season.

    I’m planting some squash, radishes, and chard right now, but unfortunately my first frost is 2 full months after yours, and we’re farther north so it’s too hot and sunny to plant any fall plants now. I’m planting summer varieties of some and hoping for the best for others. One thing that’s a surprisingly good summer crop is mushrooms. A warmer, humid, dark place is perfect (under your sink or on a shelf in a dark corner) so you can grow mushrooms without taking up the sun space everything else needs!

    We had first frost August 31 in NB Canada. Frost blankets are essential around here. Last frost was June 8. Clouches are essential as well.

    Just found your channel! I’m from Philly but I moved out to California and I’ve started a garden on balcony. I tried to garden in Pennsylvania when I had a house but the mosquitoes made me quickly give up that hobby. They eat me alive !! Out here I’m pretty sure things would grow all year round as far as I can tail so I think I might try this
