- Hot Boxes | Versatile Cloche | Undercover | Mini Greenhouse | Green Side Up
I have used many different protection structures/strategies for protecting plants over the decades, but this is one of the best so far, I call them Hot Boxes. They are panelised square boxes that maximise space when compared to hoop tunnels. Mine are sized to fit all of my beds making them truly versatile and they get used out on the plot and inside the polytunnel too.
Storm Arwen damage to an allotment site, go have a look here at Tony Smith's video he filmed after the storm, truly heart breaking footage. Oh...and subscribe while your over there too!

I think I speak for everyone when I say, we miss you mate.
Good that there was no big damage on your allotment. It's a nice Mini Greenhouse 👍 I might build one like that in spring.
You will wonder how you managed without them!...Steve...😃
Mini walled garden
Indeed it is!...Steve...😃
All looking good 👍
Cheers D N...Steve...😃
Cheers Steve nice to see not much damage.
We where very fortunate over here on the west coast Lee...Steve...😃
Great video Steve.
Think I’ll be making a couple of those hot boxes for the upcoming season 👍
They are a Godsend Mark, and so versatile!...Steve...😃
Another storm on the way tonight steve
No damage from that one Andrew...Steve...😃
@@GreenSideUp thank god for that
I love the panelised boxes and think I might bite the cost and make some. Also need a little festive tree for the veg plot. It really brought a smile to my face,
Hi Steve those are very handy things to have thats for sure , I did have two very similar but not anymore firstly someone cut them then after that they grew legs and walked so gave up after that and just used hoops they not bothered in them . Keep safe Bill and val
It's such a shame that such things go on, even more of a shame that no one ever sees anything!...Steve...😃
Just watching the weather Steve another big storm coming in from the west hitting N.ireland Monday night Tuesday morning hope we all stay safe and escape major damage
I saw it hit Ireland quite badly, all okay here...Steve...😃
Dear Steve, have been planting my tomatoes and tons of veg. outside. Whilst planting the lettuce I channeled you, saying "One week's sulking . . . " I do so enjoy your approach. Have a groovy day, Kerry.
Hehe, I like it. There are a few here who have said they use my sayings!...Steve...😃
@@GreenSideUp Thanks so much for replying. Here in Tasmania I've just planted out my tomatoes. Wish me luck!
I'm so glad you were spared.🌿💚🌿
Me too Peggy, it is a nervous journey to the plot to find out...Steve...😃
Now that is a winter project worth investing in for next year- love the way you explain things
thank you Steve
Thanks Jo, mail me a couple of photo's when you have built them...Steve...😃
Storm Barra on the way, stay safe everyone xx
Just a baby storm that one Kim I think...Steve...😃
Sorry to hear that many gardeners have lost panes of glass and other structural damage. I found those aluminium green houses flimsy in high winds. I was losing at least ten panes every year which can be a costly business. My greenhouse made from old window frames lasted far longer.
Great video, glad u didn't get to much damage, such a relief
Thanks Mark, we get rough weather here every Winter, it either lasts for a year or 5+...Steve...😃
@@GreenSideUp must be very worrying time, I'm looking out the window all the time. Haha
Great video Steve and good that you didn't get much damage due to Storm Arwen. I checked out my allotment and there wasn't any damage either and all the surrounding plots were untouched by the Storm. I have known people who lost their power supply for a few days but it's back on now. Keep safe, warm, well and happy gardening.
Many thanks David, glad there is no damage for you also...Steve...😃
Just been out to check everything is tied down properly for tomorrows storm. Here we go again⚠⚠
I dont think "Barra" had quite the same venom as Arwen, hope you and yours are ok...Steve...😃
Another good tip well explained Steve. I'll be planning a variation on your theme somehow.👍🏽
Good to hear Pat, mail me a photo or two when you have it done...Steve...😃
In the US, folks replace their house windows. I use these for structures like this. We also have what are called storm windows.. these seal up older windows for the winter. These can be framed out. I just lay them on a cold frame (and hope for no wind!). Along with buckets of random bolts and and fasteners, I've built all my growing extension for free. I find them roadside, craigslist, and buy nothing on FB.
These are great ideas azmri, we have one similar on our other allotment site here in the village where a plot holder has built a greenhouse out of old windows and doors...Steve...😃
Hi Steve, glad you haven't had much damage to your plot 🙂 my hubby's greenhouse had 8 panes of glass broken so, had to replace. Unfortunately, the door was blown off and smashed Into my new polytunnel but, it suffered about 4 rips that weren't too big and out came the repair.tape. I watched Tony Smiths video & very saddened to see the damage on their site, nature is very cruel at times. Thanks for sharing your video & take care 🙂
Hiope it is all sorted out now Christine, it can feel like the end of the world when such things happen...Steve...😃
@@GreenSideUp it is thank you, take care 🙂
Good explanation of how to build and the uses for a hot box Steve. I think once the price of timber falls ( if it ever does!) I'll be making some of these.
Thanks for sharing mate
ATB 👍
Woody
Cheers Woody, they will serve you very well in your new Kitchen garden that you are building...Steve...😃
👍
Many thanks Locke...Steve...😃
I am glad you hadn't had much damage Steve. I have seen ur panalised boards when u talked about Yr corn growing.. Have been very inspired by this and have been after my 18 year old to help me put one together atleast to overwinterise some of my plants for now.. Thanks very much... I wondered how u keep them sturdy in the bed.. Is it because u made them to size for the inside edges?
Hi Jhansi, yes it is exactly that , that keeps them (mostly) together, I mentioned this in a video I shot yesterday for publishing later today...Steve...😃
Hi Steve. Thanks for another great video full of useful tips. Three questions please. You have stapled the polythene to the frames. Do these stand up to high winds and is the polythene likely to tear? Are the stones on the hot boxes sufficient to stop them blowing away during a storm like Arwen. Thanx
Hi Val, with the stapling, no the plastic does not tear as it is thick polytunnel plastic held in many places. New video out later today showing the stapling in more detail. Yes, a couple of bricks on each corner holds the lid down firmly. Because these little structures are so good and strong, it is why I became a little blase wih them and did not bolt up properly, then it blew apart as you saw...Steve...😃
I planted broad beans in my tunnel, it looks like they have been eaten alive by rodents 😔 I've just this morning planted a new lot at home in the propagator, will get them through then keep them in the mini greenhouse until I can get them out!
There is always something queueing up to eat or destroy what we gardeners have done, it is quite tedious at times, good luck with the broad beans Anita...Steve...😃
Hiya Steve, hot boxes look a great investment. As I'm a bit green (side up) at garenening at the minute could you tell me why you use the netting on the carrots and not the polythene? Thank you and thanks for another great video. I'm on the north east coast and it was chilly and a bit blowy.
Hi Col, the netting is called "Veggiemesh" and stops carrot and cabbage fly getting at your crops, polythene would also stop them but the netting allows the rain in to water your plants. The Polythene is used to help raise the temperature inside...Steve...😃
Hi Steve, is 500 gauge plastic good enough for these hot boxes please? I really want get ahead with my planting this year.
Do you have any problems with snow building up on top of the hotbox? Especially if you can't get to your allotment for a few days or weeks
Hi Philip, we never really get snow load here, the most I recall is a couple of inches, just a couple of years ago and I knew that was coming so I just put a timber baton under one edge of the lid and the snow slid off before I got there...Steve...😃
Don't you fasten the bottom of your hot boxes out side great video again cheers
Hi Stephen, In general I only use the top bolts to secure and it is right now I should be using the bottom ones also, great simple idea to bolt the other way round at the bottom that I had not thought of. I've mentioned it in the video I shot yesterday for publishing later today...Steve...😃
