- What to grow NOW in February! This isn't your typical video of what to sow this month. Instead, I've created an unmissable list of just 5 plants that I think you need in your gardens to give you abundance, tasty food, flowers, and all-year-round interest, without you getting overwhelmed! Don't just take my word for it... joining me this month are Liz from @LizZorab and Tanya from @Lovelygreens with their recommendations!
For 5% discount off your seed purchases from Seeds Ireland, click here: seedsireland.i... I get asked so often where I get my seeds from, or if I can recommend a source… All of Seeds Ireland’s seeds are certified organic and open pollinated and you're supporting independent Irish business. I’ve found their germination rates to be great and highly recommend them!

Hope you love this video folks! Tell me... what are you choosing to grow (or not grow!) now?
Thanks for inviting me to join you in this video Niall. Wow, that witch hazel is going to be gorgeous in years to come!
And thank you for making such a great segment! Yeah I think the Witch Hazel will look amazing once it gets established!
I started sweet peas in December because here in California we can get away with it and they do not like the weather conditions in late spring and summer- wayyy too hot . I check them everyday because it's so fun watching them attach to whatever I've fashioned for them to grow up
I still find it so interesting the different times that things can be started in different parts of the world. For us here our sweet peas can last longer because of the cooler weather. On the flip side, the weather isn’t as good for enjoying things outside!!! 😂
@Niall Gardens yes my BFF in Cork is envious of my winter garden but in Summer I'm envious of his. Our droughts make summer gardening not so fun
Good for you, getting that hamamelis! When I bought my garden, I knew that the one thing I had to have was a yellow hamamelis, but seven years later, I still haven't! I just don't know where to fit it in. But I will get around to it, and in the meantime, they have several colours in the botanical garden here in town that I can enjoy.
Thanks for having me in your fab video, Niall! Lots to sow and grow, beginning now, and wow, look at how far along your snowdrops are. Mine are still just tiny sprouts. Great tips for all the ornamentals and edibles in this piece too. Love the witch hazel (need!) and don't be surprised if some of those broad beans bounce back :)
And a huge thank you to joining me in the video! Yeah I'm hopeful that a good number of the beans will power through! I've been surprised at far along the snowdrops are here as well actually. Now that I have one witch hazel, I'm already eyeing up getting a few more!!
I think hellebores are great to grow in February. The cultivar ‘Jacob’ blooms for me this month in New York, USA. Zone 7a
Niall just found you.... thankyou!!! ive been darting back and fourth to different channels for my garden in killarney... great video keep em coming hope we see lots more from u :)
Awesome! Thank you! So glad you found the channel!
Love it. Love The colabs between you, Liz (and Huw but not today) and that you’re all friends, not competing. Watch you all individually but it’s like my friends hanging out together 😂Also loved the aubergine lady 😊 not seen her before but I’ve brought aubergine seeds but no idea what to do- now I do! And it was a really helpful presentation ❤
Yay! Thank you! Glad that you enjoy when we get together - I think it's a really nice thing to do. Certainly, I've loved getting to know and becoming friends with Liz, Tanya, Huw, etc... and it's great that we can share that with you 😃
I just love sowing! It’s so exciting as every seed has so much potential
It's a magic thing to do isn't it!
Glad I came across your channel!
Glad you found me too!
Love witch hazel! It's such a lovely scent in the air to promise spring!
Cool video Niall! I can't wait to watch these every month! I've learned some cool plants to have in January ☺️
Yay! I’m so pleased you liked it! I think by the end of the year the videos will create a brilliant collection of plants
I love watching gardeners from around the world for inspiration. I'm in California, usda hardiness zone 9b & a fairly Mediterranean type climate. I basically have 2 growing seasons, a "cool" season late fall through early spring & a "hot" season (that is also very dry) late spring through fall. Daffodils, grape hyacinth, spring snowflakes, camelias, & hellebores are all in full bloom right now. Witch hazel is on my wishlist to add to my garden for early color.
Good morning, Niall, Liz and Tanya.
Thanks for sharing your special knowledge with us 🌿💚🌿
Sorry I'm only catching up on comments now! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Aconites are in full flower weeks ahead of snowdrops. A blast of cheery yellow but hardly ever mentioned.
They're lovely little things!
Great video Niall 😊
Thanks!
Good morning Niall, hope alls well, all good here, bit milder last few days and done nice sunny walks, wrapped up though. Church in a bit catch this later have a good day everyone thanks Niall x
Morning Hazel! Glad to hear the weather is a bit better with you. Have a nice day and time in church.
Great video
Best shrub for winter viburnum bodnantense. Pink flowers on bare stems from Autumn through the Spring and good autumn colour most years.
That's a super choice Valerie! I love it too!
Great inspiration Niall. The witch hazel looks fabulous.
Thanks Cearma! Yeah the Witch Hazel is something special!
I’m going to love this series 🥰🥰
I'm hoping you will! I've got some great plans for it through the year!
great video Niall! I must admit snowdrops are my favourites and love to see them as it really is a reminder that spring is on its way soon! I do need to treat myself to more as this mature garden doesn’t have enough!
Unfortunately we don’t really like broad beans or aubergines but great and helpful tips on them!
I have just started my first seeds this week in the electric propagator of sweet peppers, geraniums but many many sweetpeas (6 different types with 8 seeds of each planted) so cant wait for them to be enjoyed this year but will keep them well away from my sunflowers this year!
have a great week and thanks again
Thanks Lisa and sorry I'm only catching up on the message now. I'm officially giving you permission from me to treat yourself! lol
Good video. Your snow drops are so pretty. Enjoyed the colab. My Grandmother had a big witch hazel bush in her garden so beautiful. Have a wonderful week.
Here in North Texas we are in for hard week. It was 60 degrees this morning temp is dropping and will be 29 degrees F tonight. Tomorrow high 34 burr. I don't like this. Oh well one week of winter again. ha ha
Thanks Donna and apologies for only replying now!
Got my first witch hazel, for half price, at Bents garden centre. There were many different colours, but could only afford and carry one!
Yay! That's so cool that you've got one! And getting at a bargain price too! Can't beat that!
Will it be ok in a pot? I’ve only got a tiny back yard with a couple of raised beds and about 140 containers! I also have a community well-being garden called Grow Your Mind. Xxx
@@joannewilliams5589 Yeah I think it'll be fine providing you make it a good big pot!
It’s only a medium pot at the moment, and it’s a tiny tree
Lovely video! Love the witch hazel!
Thanks so much Rose! Yeah they're just the most beautiful plants
Excellent Tips Niall….🇨🇦🇨🇦❤️
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks!
Niall! Excellent Video and I love Liz :) I like forsythia better than witch hazel. But I have to say I love the burgundy-colored one very much! Excellent suggestions and I can't wait to see the rest of the series!
Thanks so much Dolly!
Funny i was looking at the witch hazel last week when I was shopping big in the 70% off section ( fondly known as bargain corner ) i tend to veer to pink over yellow in most flower choice.
As I spent a little too much on the bargains i withheld on the Full price stuff. But came away with some (6 pots which I will divide up) ground cover plants ( pink flowers ) clematis pink or white flowers (8 or was it 10)hostas 3 different leaf colour, a dark sedum and some delphinium’s(5 mixed blues and white) and a couple white hydrangeas.
So a good £200 spent. Oops.
Wow! You picked a great selection of things - I love the sound of them. How nice! And money well-spent!
I’ll do you some pots up if you manage to visit you can take them home with you
Niall, great video, Well done, good recommendations. Must get my sweet peas seeds, I keep forgetting. I have primroses and lovely grass plants gone in this week.
Ah thanks Lorraine! I got a few bits and pieces that I need to get planted into the ground also - I'm going to have to get that done. Plus I've been working away on reducing the size of the apple trees a bit, but they're so huge that it's a massive job
@Niall Gardens oh my word, mind yourself, the apple trees are a huge job. It will be worth it. Our weekend has been a blessing. The weather is beautiful. Our allotments open Feb 1st, whoohoo, super excited. I have fallen in love with the grass plants, awaiting a new delivery at our co-op . Those snowdrops are so beautiful, i bet they were worth lying on the cold ground. So delecate looking.
Beautiful ❤️ gonna try the sweet peas..lovely
Brilliant! So glad that it inspired you to have a try with them - make sure to let me know how you get on!
Witch hazel is great for skin care! It's astringent so it's good for inflammation. It costs £3 a bottle for witch hazel solution for me so in the long run, witch hazel would save money!
It is super for skin care, so as well as being beautiful, I think that makes it a super-plant!
Good video thank you, hope you didn't freeze on that damp grass!
Thanks Sarah! Hahahaha yeah it fairly cold alright though I managed to get that section filmed in one take so I didn't have to be lying there too long!
I have tried planting asparagus twice in NW Highlands of Scotland, very mild seaside garden No luck so should I try for 3rd time lucky?
Sweet pea 'High Scent' is confirmed the most fragrant of all sweet peas
I didn't actually know that - great info!
Can you tell us what zone you're in? Thanks & love from Montréal.
I looked it up, and I think you're in a equivalent to USDA Zone 9. :)
Don’t grow snow drops if you have dogs…. They are poisonous to dogs. Killed my last girl… please be careful… I don’t know what else is dangerous so I’m very careful what I grow now
Thank you so very much for this info Cheryl.. I wasn’t aware 🙏💕
Most of your Flower Bulbs are poisonous to Dogs & Humans so plant deep or plant in part of garden that's of limits which i know is hard or use chicken wire or small fence round where planted or in containers out of reach i hope this helps💚🌞
@@KenCanif thank you so very much for this !! I’m a very new gardener as of last year and would hate to unknowingly cause any harm to any animals 🙏💕
@@KenCanif may I please ask ; is it just the bulbs that are poisonous or the flowers as well ? 💚
Now that I'm not 100% sure of but if the bulb is & the stem & flower come from the bulb i would stay clear but don't dismay there are lots of other plants & Flowers that are 100% edible & that is the joy of gardening as you start your journey you'll discover a wonderful world just go online or local library & do some research on plants & Flowers you'll find plenty good luck as your journey begins💚🌞
