    Fun fact, Space Invaders is regarded as one of the first games with a difficulty curve, since the aliens speed up the more of them you defeat... but that was an accident, they move slow at first because there was more of them and the game's processor couldn't handle that. It became iconic mainly due to a glitch.
    There's some parallels between that and Judgment Silversword.

    • @timothymclean
      @timothymclean 2 года назад +10

      I mean, obviously it went in the opposite direction-the hardware speed _flattened_ the difficulty curve instead of _creating_ one. But still.

    I recommend Boktai, or Bokura No Taiyo in Japan. Super unique solar-powered stealth-shooter-RPG that uses the literal real sun to power most of the games' mechanics, like weapon charging and the damage enemies take. When emulated you don't have to go outside with a physical cartridge, as there's a program available for simulating the sun for the emulator. That way you don't have to get sunburns to play it. Also, I forgot to mention it's a vampire hunting game with Norse and Spaghetti-Western inspired aesthetics.

    13:05 yeah the throwing mechanic is a pretty useful tool in the mystery dungeon games. There are seeds that debuff you if you eat them, so if you throw them at any enemy, including bosses, they will catch them and eat them, which can lead to crazy set ups to oneshot a lot of the bosses.

    • @MercuryA2000
      @MercuryA2000 2 года назад +12

      I remember cheesing at least one boss because I'd just throw sleep seeds at it while I waited for my team to beat it up.

    • @thohillesland
      @thohillesland 11 месяцев назад +2

      Even looking outside of the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games to the actual Roguelike games in the series like Mystery Dungeon: Shiren The Wanderer there is even more of this type of stuff. For example in that game you can get various different "monster meats" which when eaten turns you into that monster for a little while. This of course works on enemies too, so if you manage to take some early game monster meat all the way to the final boss you can very easily cheese him with it.

    One game I found recently is Void Terrarium. It’s a roguelike where you play as a robot who is tasked with keeping the last human, Toriko, left alive. You don’t keep any items after dungeons or if you die, but they are reduced to scrap you can use to feed Toriko, make medicine if she’s sick, make furniture for her place, or make new starting loadouts for your character. Both the SIM and Dungeon Crawling are linked intrinsically and losing in a dungeon is barely a punishment since you just get booted out with scrap, just the same as if you clear it. It’s on Switch, PS4, and PS5 at around $25 digital.

    Dead or School was on my list for games I'd like to get on PS4. It looked interesting to me, so I do really look forward to getting it eventually, especially knowing now that it's a long game.
    Started playing Izuna as soon as I saw the thumbnail for the video (I knew about the game already). I've only beaten the second dungeon so far, but it is fun. Never really played those types of games before, so I am glad that it has held my attention and I've enjoyed it.
    I saw the playthrough for the Mary-Kate and Ashley game and didn't think it was that bad, honestly; definitely could have been worse for what it was.

    0:29 Given I am concurrently seeing Mystery Dungeon-like Gameplay without any Pokémon, Chocobos, Dragon Quest Characters, or a guy named Shiren attached to it I am sure I am already sold on one of these...

    Unbound: Worlds Apart is another really underrated game. It's quite quickly become my personal favorite platformer of all time.
    It's at just the right difficulty for me (quite hard, but still very fair) and respawns you right before you died 99% of the time, because it has automatic save points right before almost every obstacle, which also means you can pretty much back out whenever you want.
    Its main mechanic is quite unique, too. You have a bubble that you can spawn, and for different areas, it has different effects. For example, there's one where you shrink, one where the direction of gravity reverses, and one that pretty much pauses time.

    Gonna throw my own hat into the ring to recommend Ghost 1.0. It's a story-driven sidescroller that becomes a rouge-like after you beat it. Super fun, needs more love.

    Izuna looks awesome, there should be more games that use mystery dungeon mechanics. I'd recommend you play a Pokemon Mystery Dungeon game, I believe Explorers of Sky (DS) is widely considered the best but it's a bit hard to get ahold of. Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness are similar and easier to find. I've been having a lot of fun with Rescue Team DX on the switch, but Super Mystery Dungeon on 3DS is my personal favourite because of more of a "recruit em all" focus and little RNG when recruiting. I've barely played Gates to Infinity (also 3DS) but people say it's the worst one, I don't know if that means it's a bad game though. Never played Red Rescue Team or Blue Rescue Team (one GBA, one DS) but Rescue Team DX is a remake so they're probably great. I love this series so much, it's got some of the best stories and music to ever come out of the Pokemon franchise

    I grew up with Sheep Raider! I still have the disc and everything, I absolutely ADORE it, the little oddball that it is. And I remember Izuna vaguely, there were ads for it in Tips N Tricks, and I always thought "Hey, that looks fun!" and then never bought it for some reason. I'll definitely check it out and check out the other games as well!

    Wow that last one really broke her. Also the using items, and multiple characters/character swap is actually a mystery dungeon thing (especially the Pokémon mystery dungeon). I’d highly recommend running through the Explorers Of series. If you can get it explorers of sky is the best one with the most content.

    Izuna was my intro to roguelikes too, and I got it because of the "Unemployed Ninja" in the title as well.
    Turns out I'm not a big fan of roguelikes and never finished the game. I stopped playing halfway through the last dungeon.

    This is the kinda content I wanna see between major videos personally.
    Judgement Silversword I never heard of but does look like a good entry point into hard Shmups.
    Dead or School I watched ProtonJon play one stream and it was HILARIOUS and I'm glad I got some more info on it.
    SHEEP RAIDER WAS ACTUALLY A CHILDHOOD GAME HOLY SHIT I SCREAMED WHEN I SAW IT POP UP.... I also sucked at it.
    Izuna, anyone who KNOWS Mystery Dungeon knows of Izuna. Whether or not we actually played it is another thing entirely! Pretty funny to see someone has played Izuna but not MD.
    "Is this just a bit?" *scrolls ahead in the preview and sees the stream clip* "OH NO THIS ISN'T JUST A BIT ABORT ABORT"

    In general, I'd say it's very worth to jump into random, obscure PSX era titles. There's so much hidden charm in those games that were forgotten in time. Even if the games are not super fun to play, it's still a good experience to.
