      I thought it was pretty well known that the dub is actually kinda messed up at times. Despite trying to censor a lot, they often add disturbing implications or new stakes and the times when something crazy does happen stings a lot more due to the usual tone not desensitizing the audience to dark moments.(Or that one time in GX where a certain character died from his heart stopping and...er, the japanese version 4K-censored themselves by saying "that entire plotline last season? never happened, the chars just misunderstood", while the dub played it straight that far but cut out said retcon by not dubbing the season it was in.)

      @@lpfan4491 GX had an entire school, with foreign exchange students, up and disappear into another dimension in the third season. In the second season, the school was taken over by a cult worshipping the Light of Ruin from deep space (if I remember the lore correctly). This is the same force that turned Yubel from vaguely yandere spirit to "let's merge all the dimensions and rule forever" whackadoodle spirit. The first season had a different cult that caused the disappearance of one student and the deaths of the rest of that dorm. And that cult was full of duel spirits, an achient pharaoh, a vampire lady, a humunculus, and said missing student who had been brainwashed.
      GX was waaaaaaaaay more off the rails then "that time Zane Truesdale was doing the Yu-Gi-Oh! equivalent of cage fighting where everytime you lose LP you get shocked violently".

    I feel there should be something mentioned with the infamous "angry finger-pointing" scene. With the goon on the right, 4Kids actually drew in an extra finger over where the gun was so he would be pointing. But if you look closely, the goon's index finger that was on the gun's trigger is still there, meaning they made him have FIVE fingers on top of this thumb.

      @@castonyoung7514 well it's a belief Solomon passed down, it's about treating cards with respect, not that they are truly alive. However with all of Japan's minor Kami and Yokai and other spiritual beings it's not beyond the realm of possibility for some people to believe their cards could gain a soul, or heart, over time.
      The truth is cards are based off of real monsters, some are based off of real people, like Dark Magician was the Pharaoh's best friend. So in a way some have a heart or some strange connection they feel close to.
      But when people day "Heart of the Cards" in terms of Yugi drawing the cards he needs at the perfect time, it's referring to the Destiny Draw as some call it. Where magic manipulates the order of the remaining cards to give him something that will help. It's not like the Shining Draw from later series that literally makes up cards, but rather Yugi's Destiny Draw works like "this is a tight spot, if I just had one of these 5 cards I could buy myself more time"
      And one of those 5 cards would randomly be selected to help. Which is why he seems to get better draws in more desperate situations.
      If only a single card has a chance of helping, that single card is the only thing his magic will bring to him.
      However, since Yugi doesn't even know about the Magic himself, it's possible that's why its so limited. Perhaps if he knew he could actively use it to get any card he wanted at any point

    It’s interesting to me that the dub *added* a plot point about Kaiba being in a strange place mentally due to the mind crush.
    Because in the manga, that really was a plot point. The duel between Yugi and Kaiba was after Kaiba had done a *lot* of evil stuff to get revenge on Yugi. The mind crush was explicitly to break the evil part of Seto’s mind, and allow him to rebuild himself as a better person. Seto was actually in a *coma* after the duel in the manga, and him still being in that state is part of why Mokuba was so angry with Yugi, and why the deal for Kaibacorp started (can’t have a guy in a coma as head of the company).
    The manga even has that bit about Seto missing a piece of himself. The implication being that is his love for his brother. Mokuba being captured causes Seto to wake up from his coma a continent away, and when the two reunite at the end of the arc, we see a young Kaiba finish the puzzle of his heart that he started building when Yugi mind crushed him.
    The manga even had a different context for the upcoming duel. It was against a puppeteer who claimed that Seto had died in his coma, and he was channeling his angry spirit though a puppet. . And it was only during that battle that we see Seto wake up in his hospital bed
    So, kinda like the Mako’s father thing last time, the dub, seemingly accidentally, created a story that mirrored parts of the original story.

    • @lpfan4491
      @lpfan4491 Год назад +23

      Even without the context of something vaguely similar going on in the manga, it is very easy to consider the idea the dub had here as a lot better. Of course it is a direct lead in to the duel against a literal part of Kaiba removed from him, but it also just makes more sense on a deeper level in the text. The company is not in a bind because dude lost literally once, but rather because he is completely besides himself and is legitimately not in a state of mind where he can manage anything. It also has surprisingly good synergy with the lore added in the later arcs(Specifically virtual world), to the point where I legitimately wish these details were actually in the original japanese series.

      this reminds me of how in yugi vs kaiba atop the roof, when celtic guardian is about to attack ultimate dragon, the dub adds a cut-in of the two yugis splitting apart and then he yells "STOP!" which is closer to how it reads in the manga version of that moment which even has a similar panel of the yugis splitting, as opposed to the japanese version of the anime where there is no such cut-in and yugi just falls to the ground silently, and celtic guardian just sort of...gives up and stops running of his own accord
      and yet it's still not the best version of the scene because they also completely reversed téa's thought process when she's running up to him to "he looks so conflicted like he's struggling to do the right thing", from the original which i find more dramatic and compelling where it's instead "he looks completely resolved, that means the other yugi has actually decided to go through with potentially killing kaiba"...which would also tie better into the mini-arc of little yugi distrusting big yugi that, again, 4kids added ??? uyuyuy

      I think part of the issue there is that the manga's first 7 volumes when that happened weren't really adapted into the main anime, but rather the season 0 iteration. Episode 1 kind of truncates the Death-T arc battle and Kaiba's coma so it all feels more abrupt.

    You know, for all the incomprehensible changes that the English dub made, I think that the scene where Pegasus negotiates with Kaiba Corp's board is actually an improvement. Like the Japanese dialogue makes no sense, in what world would a board of directors accept an offer from the CEO of a different company to simply *transfer all their shares to him* with nothing in it for them? Sure, Pegasus promises to restore Kaiba Corp's reputation, but they wouldn't even benefit from that because they would have just given all their shares away for free.

      Pyramid of Light is also one of the few western anime products to have proper card art(Though it is the TCG-cards, not the anime-cards). The reason I don't call it a dub is because despite the visual material being produced in japan as always, the movie was commissioned by 4Kids and went through the conceptstage, writingphase and final production on their end first. It was then dubbed and rewritten into japanese using the uncut original animation to still somehow make the JP-version the better one by far.
      (Also, I'm fairly sure it is actually meant to be seen as a legitimate part of the lineup. It was given the proper duel monsters-branding of the animeseries upon localization and was even given a JP-only movienovel of all things to provide deck lists, fill gaps left in the movie and expand its lore through an alternate telling.)

    Kaiba's bossness takes the worst hits from the censorship in Duelist Kingdom, between deflecting a bullet with his briefcase and later jamming a gun with a sick trick-shot with a card that slots it neatly in place to stop the hammer from striking the barrel, and I think just in time to be stopped in place by the pulled trigger's movement of the hammer, so it wasn't just the maneuver itself but the timing of it as well I think. Also I think he throws another card at the thug's hand to make him drop the gun? Oh, and he full-on swings his briefcase at a thug. Is that whole scene of him being jumped on the way to Pegasus' castle cut out? Or is it made into another 'I point at you' scene?

    Frankly, I think Pegasus drinking fruit juice out of a fancy wine glass in the dub is actually extremely in-character for him. The man runs a company that makes children's card games for a living and still reads cartoon books at age... whatever age he is.
    All in all, a lot of changes 4Kids made are terrible, yes, but more than you'd expect actually change the context for the better.

  • @PhalanxKnight
    @PhalanxKnight Год назад +2

    Some changes from the equivalent manga chapters for this episode I found interesting:
    The reason for Kaiba missing Duelist Kingdom is the fact that he was knocked into a coma after the duel with Yami. Yami's Mind Crush metaphorically shattered Kaiba's heart to remove the evil inside of it, and Kaiba was tasked with reassembling his heart before he could awaken. This better explains how Pegasus was able to enact his plans to take over Kaibacorp, since Kaiba was completely out of the picture and unable to do anything to stop him.
    While the scene with the kid getting his star-chips stolen plays out mostly the same, it becomes immediately obvious that Sawutari never intended to give them a chance to reclaim the missing star-chips. As soon as they leave to go find them, he gets the boat to depart without hesitation. The group see the boat leaving, but are confronted by Mokuba at the same time. Despite no longer been able to return the star-chips to the kid, Yami accepts Mokuba's challenge of a duel to try and understand what Mokuba is planning.
    Instead of a data card Kaiba gives him (or his favourite card in the dub), Mokuba took the key to Kaiba's safe after realizing the Big Five needed documents contained inside and swallowed it. This explains why a bunch of grown adults couldn't just take it from a small child, and does lead to the rather amusing gag when Mokuba delights in explaining that they'd come running every time he went to the toilet to see if he had pooped out the key.
    The duel itself plays out pretty much the same with Mokuba stealing some of Yami's star-chips to try and knock him out of the tournament. When Mokuba decides to trust Yami and return his star-chips, Sawutari shows up and declares that duelists exchanging star-chips outside of a duel is against the rules and confiscates them. Yami challenges Sawutari to a duel to win back the star-chips, which leads into the duel between Yami and the fake Kaiba. However, in the manga, it is a ventriloquist with a Kaiba puppet they claim contains the soul of the real Kaiba.

    • @lpfan4491
      @lpfan4491 Год назад +1

      The reason for the first change is mostly the diffrence in context. Unlike in the manga or Toei anime, Kaiba has not done anywhere near enough in the DM-anime to need or deserve a trial and full reset, so Yami just removed the darkness clouding his mind instead of shattering his heart completely. Diffrences like these really put into perspective that these are just not the same entity. In most other cases, the DM anime would have just been considered a poor adaptation and discarded(Which is what some people are actually still advocating for), but its legacy is so deeply integrated into the IP at this point that that's not exactly an option anymore.
      The manga should just get a seperate adaptation that stands on its own at that point, though that would require the people responsible for stuff like that to actually care.

    • @PhalanxKnight
      @PhalanxKnight Год назад +1

      @@lpfan4491 Oh for sure. I'd also assume there would be an issue of timing. In the manga, you have the Monster Fight, Evil Dragon Cards, Jounouchi's final confrontation with Hirutani (among other smaller adventures), and most importantly the entire Monster World Arc with Yami Bakura between Death - T and the start of Duelist Kingdom. Kaiba was in that coma for quite a bit of time in the manga.
      However in the anime, it would have felt quite rushed for Kaiba to be put into a coma only to come out of it 10 or so episodes later. It just wouldn't have had the same impact, in my opinion.
      It could also be that they knew at that point Kaiba was going to be a popular character, and wanted the opportunity to include him in the series more. The anime does keep him in the series until the very end, despite him completely exiting the series after Battle City in the manga.
