There’s a funny thing about the change to Ryota’s motivation. Later on, in his Battle City duel, he actually does express the belief that his father is still alive, somewhere out there. It actually informs the reason one of his moves in the duel, where he resurrects The Legendary Fisherman instead of Fortress Whale. Because leaving the fisherman in the graveyard feels like admitting to himself that his father is likely dead.
So while 4kids almost certainly had a ratings-based reason for adding the line about the lifeboats, it accidentally fits with later information about Ryota’s character.

I like that Mako's honorable personality was made much more explicit in Japanese because he basically warned, asked, or told Yugi a bunch of information from asking if he was ok with the terrain split to giving him monster stats/info of things he plays. It's still kinda underhanded because he doesn't divulge that his monsters will be hidden while playing, but it's far less scummy than how he's portrayed in English.

Storm approaching "mirror" edit is to reflect a metaphorical sense of "forward". In japanese, you read from right to left, where as in english, you read from left to right. Your eye is naturally trained on the starting position. So in japan, that's the right side. In places like america, it's the left. The idea is that the storm washes over you, rather than your eye starting at the storm as it covers your screen.
The reason why this is important is "stormclouds" are like, symbology 101, so you gotta get the symbology right otherwise you miss the entire point of the scene.

    • @velvetbutterfly

During the 1950s there was a fad of writing horizontally from right to left, but other than that it's been that way since as early as the 1920s. After the end of WWII in 1942, many official documents were written horizontally from left to right as a result of western influence. Most novels, manga, and newspapers that are printed only in Japanese still have page orders from right to left where the text itself is read from left to right, but anything that has alternative language translations has a page order from left to right and is read from left to right. The ground photoshop made sense. It was to fix it so the divide between land and sea was more even. This way, each player got 50% of the field, making it feel more even and fair, like if they are to sell placemats.
The Japanese one is like 70% water, which creates a completely different metaphorical tone suggesting an unfair battle in favor of the side represented by water from the very start of the dual. . . which isn't how a card game you're trying to sell should be portrayed. You want it to feel competitive, which means you want it to feel equal. It creates a false sense of "yeah, I can do that to" in younger audiences. An example off the top of my head are the sins from Nanatsu no Taizai. 傲慢の罪 (Gōman no Batsu) is read as “The Lion’s Sin” due to the Furigana being ライオンのシン (Raion no Shin), in spite of its literal reading of simply “The Sin of Pride”. Hi, here's a fun fact about Japanese in response to 12:34.
It's common in Japanese to use words that are in English with Kanji in certain contexts. For example in Seven Deadly Sins' Japanese version of the Manga, the opening chapter has customers call Meliodus "Master" with the proper english outloud (represented by katakana in furigana) but with the Kanji of the Japanese word. It's just so that people can identify English words they don't know the meaning of. So they know they're saying a different word, but the meaning doesn't go over their heads. So technically the Japanese name of Kairyu-shin is Leviathan but it means 海竜神.
It's weird but it's like how if I said "Sayounara" but I wrote it as Goodbye. Technically both are correct and true but I spelled it a different way.

The manga was meant to be a mix of "Villain/Game of the Week", and the author wanted a game to be a Magic: The Gathering expy for that week. Initially, the rules were pretty much simplified in order to get the game across. However, a large number of readers actually sent in letters requesting a more in-depth look of this game. And from there, Duel Monsters, and subsequently, Yu-Gi-Oh became a proper Card Game.
Of course, by the time this anime was in the works, the Card Game was still in development so there wasn't exactly a "Defined" set of rules to go off of for both the Manga/Anime. But the Author is also a major fan of Dungeons & Dragons as well. So a lot of the random stuff you see here, the Field Boosts, rarity of Effect Monsters, Traps, and Spells, and crazy "Attack The Moon!" silliness is more attributed to a mixing of TCG/D&D elements while the actual TCG/OCG could actually develop.
It's around Battle City when the Card Game formally got the rules, although the Anime still uses a custom set of rules referred to as "Super Expert" alongside its own Banlist (primarily free Burn and Field Wipe cards like Hinotama and Raigeki). While the rules weren't really *Explained* (in either the manga or Anime as a whole), rules are referenced here and there. As an example, one of the rules is only being allowed to set 1 Spell and 1 Trap each turn, which answers the "Why don't the player(s) load their entire back row with Spell/Trap cards?" question. Plus, it does add tension.

Yu-Gi-Oh! will always have a place in my heart (and my sub feed) because of things like this. I think GX will probably be my favorite series for nostalgia reasons, but the OG DM series is fantastic too. In general, where can you find such crazy hairstyles, ludicrous character quirks, and crazy bonkers plots? So thank you, Ms. Champ, for blessing us with some top tier Yu-Gi-Oh! content!!!
Side note: my current favorite card name is Interplanetarypurplythorny Beast. For... obvious reasons.

My theory about why they change the land on the duel is the following
And editor in chief combed through every changed that needed to be made and wanted to get rid of the "Illusion light and magic" markings on the duel field. He then made a lackluster note "change ILM"
And editor doesn't understand what ILM means and interprets it as change "island land mass" which is why the illusion light and magic logo is there, but the land mass has been changed

A few things: if I were the type to edit my Patreon name for episodes, I could have done "Getsugaru was stabbed by the Giant Soldier of Stone in this episode and could use a hug." Second, anyone else notice the clips behind the credits this episode? I think those were Rockman 3 clips from the boss rush at the end of the game, but they may have been Rockman 4. Third, I actually like these Yu-Gi-Oh videos a lot, as they are quite entertaining and informative. And finally, here you go person from the Patreon listings: "Hamm Mann is cool then my anime redemption arc of self satisfaction will be complete."

It actually kinda amazes me how years later they actually made cards that reflect Mako's no-rules card effects.
Sea Stealth attack is an actual card that lets you hide a monster for a turn, that is, banished and returned
And Fury of 'Kay ru Shan', as the Anime would put it, which destroys a bunch of enemy monsters and makes it impossible to use those monster zones for a turn.
Oh, and of course, destroying the moon is a card now too, I suppose
