Actually that does make me curious. Who had the final say of the localize card names? Would it be Konami or Upper Deck at the time, or were these names 4Kids chose?
@@Timmir00 Probably Konami, 4Kids localized the show, but Konami localized the actual card game

@@genyakozlov1316 The card didn't actually exist in the real card game until much later (except for prize cards and the like, and that was mostly in Japan at the beginning).
I like how in English every character is significantly dumber and they all accuse Weevil of cheating, despite him never actually cheating. The 4kids version is just so goofy, it’s hard not to love
But he DID cheat in the 4kids version...

@@whiz8569 pegasus did tell them the rules and land bonusses, so he didnt cheat (I consider japanese versions, always the true version). He just had a advantage and still lost to yugi because of plot armor lol
It's been a while since I've seen the episode, but I remember Weevil himself even saying that he stole the information about land bonuses and whatnot.(in the 4kids version)
whiz 85 he said something about stealing the rules, but it’s not really important how he got the knowledge, he very well could have just dueled against anyone else first and come into the same knowledge, he’s not really getting any advantage from knowing there’s a power bonus because he stole the rules.

I was always confused why Weavile had to 'steal' information on the rules of the game just to know how to play it. Having it be a reward for winning before makes MUCH more sense. (Even though withholding game rules to only a select group of participants is still really dumb...)

It's not even supposed to be a fair competition though, right? Didn't Pegasus specifically want Yugi to win so that he could duel him for the millennium puzzle?
@@nanowasabi4421 I believe so and yet he doesn't rig anything in his favour and actually constantly puts him in situations where he could easily be eliminated.
The real reason behind this was the actual game wasn’t finalized before the show was written which led to moments like this and “screw the rules”.

i love how when you refer to the characters in the Japanese version you say their untranslated names and when referring to English you use their translated names!

Yugioh for children yes the same show where people get sent to the shadow realm.
Yeah, the realm of endless suffering and the Breaking down of Souls to the dankness(tbh, I really like when 4kids make some stuff technically darker)
Calling them trespassers is the only change i like
I wonder, was it 4KIDS or Yugioh that made the changes.....since Yugioh is obsessed with censorship in the US it could be possible 4KIDS simply did as told.
Turkey 83 Some of the executives told the writers to make the changes. They didn’t like it, from what I’ve heard.
Which is why 4Kids, ironically enough, likes Yu-Gi-Oh! The Abridged Series, despite the fact that the series makes fun of 4Kids.
EDIT: The writers didn’t like censoring stuff, is what I meant.
Also, the executives wanted YGO to compete with Pokémon, which is why they made it more kid-friendly.
To be fair, the japaness version is already a censored version of the manga. Seriously, read the manga. It's really dark and even gory at times. Some parts of it didn't making in to the anime at all, such as that time Joey killed a man with a yoyo

It’s not even a YGO thing, literally every 4kids dub Shares these unnecessary issues. They’re far from the worst dubs for sure but really question what we’re.their priorities when handling all these shows.

LightByte Sounds a lot like the English dub. I might have to do research to see the changes in dubs besides the English dub.
Speaking of which, you want to know an even weirder English dub? The Singapore English dub. All the characters are given weird accents, and they use really outdated slang (e.g., they give Yami Yugi a “surfer dude” accent, complete with use of the word “tubular,” Bakura is given a US Southern accent [apparently that’s considered the stereotypical “polite” accent there, which is weird to me as an American given our stereotypes of the south]), and overall it’s a surreal experience.
Man, Japanese Yugi is a baller. Time to watch the Japanese dub I guess lol
Based on the rules, the best tactic for Duelist Kingdom is to run a 60 card deck filled with magic and trap cards and focus on trying to deck out your opponent. Since your opponents can't attack directly, if you have no monsters you can never really lose by monster attack if you just don't summon anything.
You would get disqualified from doing that since Duelist Kingdom have a rule that said you MUCH have a monster on the field so building a deck with only magic and trap cards won't get you far, trap monsters included.
If you end your turn without any monsters on the field, you lose.

I was really confused back then why their never did a direct attack to finish the duel when watching the dub now i know. Also what happens when you have a beat stick on your side of the field and cards to negate both spell and trap cards for your opponent. Do you just wait and end turns untill the other person just runs out of cards, duels take forever then lol
I was thinking the same thing. Just make a deck with no monsters whatsoever, only traps and spell cards that lowers the opponent's LP, and win.
I don't have a direct source, but I did hear somewhere that for those rules, if you end your turn without a monster on your side of the field that counts as a loss.
The card game didn't exist back during the manga run of this ark the rules were less defined, that's probably why they had pegasus announce those rules, as it would have been different from the actual card game, so it would have clarified all that
@@whiz8569 that would be stupid, because if you get bad luck and draw no monsters for you first 2 turns, it is rare but it can happen. That means you lose without any fault of your own, i would be so pissed if that would happe to me lol.
@@justboschma5047 They probably have some kind of mulligan rule in place for those kinds of situations, similar to how the pokemon TCG lets you re-draw your hand if you don't have any basic pokemon in it. Though, I don't know for sure and am just talking out of my ass at this point.

I love that the ideal Duelist Kingdom strategy is to not use any monsters and to make a deck with lots of burn spells/traps. Just because of the no direct attacks rule.
Nope, you’re required to use Duel Monsters in the duel.
Kaiba actually lost to Pegasus for this reason.
