    Oh that’s actually a change that showed attention to detail (in this case at least). It would make sense for Yugi to sneak a peak at the card after he had already played it in Japanese since the suggestions wouldn’t be so subtle if they made him withdraw the card after already playing it.
    However, since Yugi deduced Pegasus was somehow scrying the cards Yugi could see, he doesn’t look at the card so that Pegasus doesn’t know what it is either.

      I mean I watched like all the episodes of season 1 on Netflix within like a week and I still didn’t make that connection, so I don’t think anyone watching the show in order would. There’s no indication that that footage is significant in this episode so your brain won’t hold onto it for long, and so much stuff happens between this episode and Yugi facing Pegasus.

  • @ReSubrose

    Maybe it's just a minor thing, but when showing the footage, it'd make things much clearer if there was an indication over which footage was japanese or english. In some instances it's obvious but in others, I can't tell which version I'm looking at. And since you mention it once in the beginning of each difference, by the end of the explanation, that indication is kinda muddled a bit.
    tl;dr: on-screen indications saying what's JPN and whats USA would be helpful.

    So the reason a lot of the dialogue changes were made in the English version is because it's the sequel to a prior season (often dubbed season 0, which I assume was too graphic to translate). As such the English version felt the need that they still has to establish a lot of things that the Japanese version didn't. The duel with Kaiba at the very start of the show is pretty much the same duel played at one point in season 0, where 'Kaibaland' is already an established place and Kaiba forces Yugi to participate in a challenge called the "Death Tower". Yugi and the gang there participate in multiple dangerous tasks to clear floors and reach the top to get the duel you get in the first episode of season 1. (Some of those challenge include laser shooting that can actually kill you, played against war veterans, saw death traps and a game of 'Capsule Monsters' against Mokuba.)
    A moment I'm pretty sure about (though it's been a while since I watched season 0), is when Jounouchi and grandpa are talking about his performance in a certain tournament, is also apart of season 0, but a special. This special establishes Jjounouchi's connection with the Red-Eyes Black Dragon, giving it more meaning when he gets one from Rex in season 1. The flashback scene where Anzu works at the restaurant is also something already established in season 0, as an entire episode is dedicated to it.
    By the way, in season 0 there are only very few episodes spent playing Duel Monsters, and features a plethora of different 'games' in each episode.
    Other noticable changes between season 0 and season 1 is the removal of one of Yugi's friends, a girl called Miho who was Honda's love interest and Mokuba having a more prevolent role as a rival of Yugi's (in different games than duel monsters).
    Kaiba and Mokuba have green hair too. (thank god they changed that thought)

    • @Gamechamp3000
      @Gamechamp3000  6 лет назад +101

      "Season 0" is a fan nickname; the anime it's referring to is an entirely separate adaptation of the same manga made by a competing studio, hence why it's a separate universe, the entire voice cast is different, and efforts are made to establish the characters' prior backstories (most evident in Episode 3). Miho wasn't "removed," she was just never an important character in the manga to begin with. Any similarities to the prior series are either by coincidence or the nature of adapting the same original work: Anzu working at Burger World, for example, is taken directly from the manga. It is likely, of course, that they felt they could get away with starting partway through the series due to a portion of their audience already being aware with the material, choosing to begin the anime at a similar point in the manga as where the prior adaptation ended to avoid making theirs a redundant work. But a large part of that decision is also because a big part of this series' goal was to function in tandem with the real world Duel Monsters card game, and Duelist Kingdom marks the point in the series where it focuses heavily on Duel Monsters rather than being about games in general.
      The tournament Sugoroku and Jounouchi are discussing is the one being advertised on the poster Sugoroku puts up, and the same tournament Jounouchi competes in off-screen after training; it has no relation to the tournament shown in the prior anime's movie. The Red Eyes Black Dragon originated in the manga, before that movie was made.
      There's only one element in the entirety of Yu-Gi-Oh: Duel Monsters that I believe to be an explicit reference to Season 0: the villain of the first filler arc is a Kaiba recolor with green hair.

    • @TerenB1
      @TerenB1 6 лет назад +22

      Technically, Season 0 isn't *really* a prequel to the Yugioh duel monsters we know and love. They were two separate shows, handled by separate animation studios. That said, its pretty fair to consider season 0 a prequel, seeing as its mostly material taken from the manga, which smoothly flows from season 0 content, to yugioh duel monsters content.
      Explanations about shadow games in Duel Monsters would come later if Im not mistaken.

      Well yeah, the 4kids version came out after the japanese version (makes sense) so they probably polished it in order to make it less "old"

  • @faereman
    @faereman 4 года назад

    It's funny how the French version is kinda halfway through the Japanese and English ones, some dialogues have not been altered (like the reason why Kaiba ripped the 4th Blue-eyes) while some other have (like the training bit). Even some names have been kept like Insector Haga while Dinosaur Ryuzaki has been changed to Rex Raptor. The invisible guns were still a thing but the pentagram was unchanged, and so on...
    And I'm assuming that every counrty had its own amount of censoring, but man I now realize that this English version had a lot more censorship than the French one.

    I think it would be really fun if in the future episodes (up to episode 9) you look at the Funimation dub of Yu-Gi-Oh as well, which is based off the JPN version and only released on three uncut DVDs before both 4Kids and Funimation cancelled them, mainly because they still use English names for the sake of consistency but keep the JPN score and story. Sadly it ends after 10 but I think it would be a nice thing to mention/showcase

      I may make a video about that dub as a whole in the future, since it seems to be really obscure. I didn't even know about it until a few days ago.

    Fun fact: The Swedish Dub of Yu-Gi-Oh, while still being done by 4-Kids, kept the Japanese names for all the characters (with the exception of one time when they accidentally call Jonouchi by his English name). My guess why they did this was probably because the Swedish Manga also kept the Japanese names, and they had to stay consistent.

    the interesting thing about the poster change is that they changed it to cards english speaking countries wouldn't see for a year in the case of buster blader, and nearly 9 years in the case of harpies pet dragon, though this is one of the cases where we had it a bit better since harpie's pet dragon was released with promos for season 0, 6 months before the first season started and 7 before it would be shown in japan and its not until 2010 that the card would be obtainable again.really have to wonder why go to the effort of creating the card and then not letting people get it for about 9-10 years.

    My only suggestion is mentioning when a scene references an event that happened in season 0, you mentioned something about joey being in a tournament, but mabey a quick say that its a reference to season 0 would be nice to know why it changed, since that wasnt out over here.

    • @Gamechamp3000
      @Gamechamp3000  6 лет назад +1

      It is not a Season 0 reference. Season 0 is only tangentially related by way of being an adaptation of the same manga; this anime actively avoids being related to Season 0, as Season 0 was made by their competitors (and they may not have even had any legal rights to Season 0 elements). "Season 0" is a fan nickname.

    • @MrMariosonicman
      @MrMariosonicman 6 лет назад

      Ah, understood, well then nevermind. guess ill just remain slightly confused about the whole tournament thing.

    • @Gamechamp3000
      @Gamechamp3000  6 лет назад +1

      In the Japanese version: Jounouchi finds out from Sugoroku that there will be a tournament in one month, with a 300,000 yen cash prize. He begs Sugoroku to train him for the tournament. Sugoroku trains him and Jounouchi competes in that tournament off-screen, placing in the best 8 of the regional preliminaries for his region. The final match of this tournament, deciding the Japanese national champion of Duel Monsters, is the match we see between Haga and Ryuzaki.
      In the English version: Joey trains under Grandpa only because he wishes to be better at the game, without any explicit external motivation. He never enters the tournament. The first mention of the tournament is when they watch the final match on TV.
