@kev ow Living in PA is cheap. a decent house in a good neighborhood is about 300-400k, and we have very low income taxes. prices for food etc are also very good. 70000 might be the min in California, but in PA that's enough for a solid middle-class life.

Regarding their wedding, for those who don't know, it's extremely important in Indian culture. Typical Indian weddings are multi-day event with hundreds if not thousands of guests. So it's understandable when they need to have two, and plan to spend about 50K. That's a lot of money but I don't think it's a huge deal for them because they will make many times that a year when they're done with residency in a few years.

Hi! Andrew here. No shade to my mom was given nor received! Both of us rewatched that part, and our families as well, and nobody feels any kind of offense in the slightest. You can even see that I am nodding, agreeing with Ashley's answer. I would have said the same exact thing. She is simply answering the question of the breakdown of our wedding budget. We found her answer and tone completely respectful! This video is about financial transparency, and I think Ashley did a great job of answering the question!

We often work 80-100 hour weeks, get compensated less than minimal wage (~8 dollars an hour last i calculated) for 3-8 years on top of loans, all during the golden years age 25-35. This couple lives a frugal lifestyle, and a wedding of 50k is their entire saving. Let that sink in.

It’s not as magical as you think.. internists start out 160- 240k depending on community health, teaching/government positions vs private. For those fortunate enough to open their own practices, almost zero income first 2-3 years (one must build up the patients’ roster, collections of insurance pay can lag up to 18 months, staff’s pay, rent, equipments). If student loans are involved, currently, for 200k at 6% interest, about $1400 per month and not tax deductible. Malpractice with tail coverage can be up to 18k per year. Disability insurance about 1.2- 2k per month depending on age. In the end, if one works for a group, monthly take home after 401k, health insurance deductible, etc about 10k. After all the other post tax obligations such as childcare/student loans/mortgage on a modest home/car payment for a Toyota/bills and gas, one would have enough left for a nice dinner once - twice per month or save up for one modest vacation per year. Don’t do primary care if money is the driver for your passion in doing medicine

Someone recommended this episode to us because we live right over the bridge in south Jersey and have a podcast for young adults.
This was a great episode! I love seeing couples be resourceful and living within their means. They still had goals and didn’t let debt hold them back from living their lives.

It’s so refreshing seeming children of immigrants in the medical field! I am, soon to be a neurosurgeon, and I am too a daughter of immigrant parents. (:

What inspires me about these episodes is not the amount of money people make, but their passion to create a better society. That's the kind of people we need, not just people with lots of money.

this is seriously so fkn sad for these two amazing frontlines employees to only me making that much a year?! i know ppl who are in tech management making 150k and look how much it cost to have medical insurance + a cost to get hospitalized and they are getting paid under 100k HEARTBREAKING they deserve so much more!

Ay! Shout-out to respiratory therapist! Can't believe she mentioned us , we seriously don't get enough recognition working in the frontline. So thank you sister!

7:13 I found it profound how she says “Nothing from Andrews mom” lol my toxic self would’ve paused and looked at her confused

I was shocked when she said that. She could have just said that my parents are helping with the wedding. That’s all. Why call out Andrew’s mom?! Disappointed!

Especially since she doesn't live in the US! Plus I thought in the Indian culture the brides parents pay for the entire wedding along with a dowry

This is so relatable to me being a radiology consultant in India and my husband being a physician working with covid patients as I write this comment. So happy to know them and their turmoil of being a front line worker..great video in entire millennial series...youtube is a side hustle that I started during my post pregnancy break..I wish all doctors get paid well as they put their heart and soul out their to help someone else at odd hours of their life sacrificing their own health, family time and relaxation during this pandemic
