- Bukola Ayodele, 25, earns $210,000 a year as a software engineer in New York City. That income includes her base salary, bonus and equity. She doesn’t touch the equity and lives off of her base salary and bonus. Now, she wants to inspire more women, and especially black women, to join her in tech. To help fill the gap, she started a RUclips channel called The Come Up (@Bukola1) to provide black women and other women of color with the resources and advice she wished existed when she first considered pursuing a career in tech.
This is the latest installment of Millennial Money, which profiles people across the U.S. and details how they earn and spend their money.

She attended Columbia University where she studied political science. She graduated in 2016 with $7,000 in student loan debt, thanks to combination of needs-based financial aid and holding a job throughout college, as well as financial support from her grandmother and her parents, who also took out some loans. She paid off her loans by the beginning of 2018.
Growing up, “we had a saying that you could either be a doctor or a lawyer or a disgrace,” she says, and after college, she expected to go into law. But it didn’t take her long to realize she wasn’t passionate about the work.
Computer science, though, had appealed to her since she took an introductory course in undergrad. After researching careers online, Ayodele quit her job in compliance in 2017 to attend a three-month engineering retreat at the New York City-based RECURSE Center to refresh her programming skills.
Leaving behind a steady job is never an easy call, especially when you’re living paycheck to paycheck, like Ayodele was. While the retreat itself was free, she saved around $6,000 in the months before she quit her job. Making that career change is what inspired her to start taking her finances more seriously: She watched RUclips videos, listened to podcasts and cut her expenses down as far as she could to save up.
Ayodele is a fan of the FIRE - financial independence, retire early - movement, and one of her goals is to earn enough off of her investments that all of her monthly costs are covered.
To that end, she contributes $1,583 each month to max out her 401(k) contributions for the year (those were her contributions in 2019 when this story was reported; the 2020 individual contribution limit increased slightly from $19,000 to $19,500), and invests an additional $4,000 a month in a Vanguard brokerage account. She also contributes around $42 a month to a health savings account.

Hope you are doing good. I'm from Nigerian parents too and I can relate with this story. As a Software Engineer I would say that we leave in our bubble where we have flexible hours, supports and benefits, with options to work remotely, high salary and job offers every day from companies.
She definitely just inspired me to become more mindful of my money. I inherited bad shopping habits from my family, but I've at least managed to stay debt free.

Shoutout to immigrant parents who left their families, friends, and every person they know and love back at their home country to migrate to another country for a chance of a better life for their family and kids. I have the utmost respect for anybody that does that, especially my mother.
I’m forever grateful for my immigrant parents. They left everyone behind: friends, family, etc. Just so me and my brothers can have a better life. It definitely pushed me harder in school. Now my parents have me, a neurosurgeon, and my older brother, a nuclear engineer. Now, all their hard work is paid off and they’ll never want to ever work again.

Studied four years then quit her job. Studied for a 3 months then find her dream job. That right there is what's wrong with the educational system.
Why's that a problem with the education system? She could have studied computer science if she knew she wanted to do that at the time.

I'm also an ethnic minority (female). In our building, everyone gets stopped by security so on this occasion I expect it's just company security protocol...
Not saying it's right but there aren't many Black women in tech, she even stated it, and it's understandable the guard would stop her before entering if he doesn't know she works there.

@@King_SPLshe mentioned that she took computer science classes in college and then after quitting her first job out of college she took a sabbatical in order to become better at coding and was part of a program for people looking to do the same. It doesnt matter whether you actually have a degree in Computer Science, employers just care about whether you have the skills to do the job
@@King_SPL there's literally a huge industry of people in tech. Only 36% of the tech industry has a CS degree. The majority are self taught or had other Stem majors. Please research.

Motivated. Inspiration not aspiration. People often compare another person's achievements by a certain time to their but you have to understand that everyone is different and every person's environment and upbringing is a massive factor into a person's life and the things they can achieve.
You can look to someone to be motivated and inspired by them but you shouldn't look to someone to aspire to be them. Also never mind age or when you get started. The best time to start was yesterday the second best time is now.

When I saw she donates to Black Girls Code, I instantly had respect because IVE BEEN ATTENDING FOR 4 YEARS NOW even though I’m not black I’m Mexican, it’s a very welcoming place to anyone but mainly there are African americas there but I got to have such a wonderful experience there and met so many friends there. One thing I love about this girl is that she showed that it's never too late for anything.
She had a degree in PolySci and was working to be a lawyer and ended up not liking it and switched to a field she actually enjoyed. I feel like some people think they are stuck with their decisions and sometimes that's not always the case.

@@cyronixed As someone in this field, they are most likely to actually. But that's not a lot in the software engineering world anyway. It's good but far from amazing. Top tier people are making over twice that and up to the millions a year.

Why americans get neck high in debt is because their parents leave them on their own.
It gives you to start fresh out of college if you are debt free,college debt is the worst western culture,its the duty as a parent to give their children free education.
It isn't western culture. It's American.
If a parent has the opportunity to pay for a child's education, they should definitely do it. However, the astronomical price of tuition makes it nearly impossible for the average couple to pay for their child's education. As a person raised by a single mother, I don't consider it her duty to pay for my tuition because it just isn't possible. That's why so many Americans continue in the cycle of poverty and find it so hard to climb out.
Imagine if your parents has 3-4 kids, it is even higher burden for ur parents.

when I saw a young black person saying she's a software engineer making over 200K, I pretty much knew that's a Nigerian immigrant or daughter of ones. They are one of the most successful groups of immigrants in this country, highly educated with high incomes.

It's a good motto. Tried & tested. Safe and strong. But this is the reason why black and asian people do not invent anything. Too busy being doctors, lawyers or whatever. Real entrepreneurship is about having an idea, investing in it and taking risks, not having letters after your name and earning a steady salary. But I see why parents would want status for their kids. If you spent all your savings emigrating your family to another country, the last thing you want them to do is say they have a really brilliant business idea that could earn millions, but then at the same time could also live them destitute if they fail. Whereas as an employee, you can easily pick up another job if whoever you work for, goes bankrupt.
What a role model she is! WOW!!! She's "self-made" and doesn't let anything get in her way. We need millions more like her!!!

Everyone makes a big deal every time black people put each other on or do for self. People tell us to stop waiting for other races to help us. We do that, then everyone gets offended. So while no one says the actual words “it’s wrong”, the comments and backlash are enough. Some black woman was getting cancelled in 2019 for saying she wanted her business to get more exposure to empower black kids to get into business and white people were all in the comments and giving her bad reviews saying white kids need empowering too or she’s reverse racist. She didn’t even mention white people. When haven’t white kids gotten positive representation? Then a black wo man reaches her community positively it offends people. So yeah as I said before. White people made this world about race and that’s how it is. So yeah we’re going to keep pointing out that we love seeing BLACK people doing well or the fact we want to reach out to BLACK people.
This is thanks to her and this video that I discovered all the job opportunities that we can have when we work in the tech industry. She really inspired me especially because I'm black a black woman that is retraining from communication to Web dev. And few days ago I was accepted to a school to start a formation. I'm very happy that I watched this video!

It's not, if you've actually gotten a chance to see what's like in a IT company most of it it's a bunch of middle aged ugly, fat men.
One of the things that pushed me away from it after i graduated. I just didn't feel comfortable around such group of people. Yeah they make money but you can make money of other things too and be happy with your environment it's not like there's only one job in the world.

I’m the only black, female software engineering major at my midsized college 😅 hopefully i will meet someone like me when i get a full time job because this is ridiculous

That's 7 times more that my monthly earnings in Serbia, and I'm still the "lucky one" in this country. Not to mention that as a freelancer I work a lot for foreign companies and clients, but they usually say "you're Serbian, your people are cheap . We don't want to pay you more than 5 times less that we would pay someone in our country for the same job". Guess there are white people who are way more undervalued than a black woman in America is. Yet I'm still being called racist when I say that in my country it doesn't matter if you are white or black, or a woman or a man. It's only impoetant if you are from a rich family or if you are a criminal working closely with the government officials. 🙄 I'm happy for her, but she just proved that the whole "white supremacy around the world" narrative null and void.

@@duncanbug I also felt like a failure and it felt impossible for me to change my situation. I didn't have anyone to help me really but I was able to spend a few months teaching myself through online tutorials.
Then I started looking for people to let me build them small websites until I had a portfolio to show off on interviews or to paying clients. It will feel impossible until it's done.
