- Elena Haskins earns $50,000 a year as a graphic designer in Brooklyn, New York. The 23-year-old has $11,000 in student debt, but her salary is enough for her to live 'comfortably' in New York City. She also has a freelance photography side hustle and recently launched a website that serves as a guide for recent college grads.
Read more about Elena's budget breakdown here: cnb.cx/2KNj6I9
This is the latest installment of Millennial Money, which profiles people across the U.S. and details how they earn and spend their money.
Eleana Haskins moved to New York City after graduating from college in the spring of 2018. She may be a recent college graduate, but she's not a novice when it comes to work. “I’ve always had part-time jobs,” she tells CNBC Make It. “I think it’s important to have a side income, even if you have support from your family. You want to have your own money.”
In addition to her full-time job as an associate designer at PEI, a finance media and conference company, Haskins has several side hustles including a freelance photography gig and a website for recent college grads. While her side hustles don't boost her income significantly, she appreciates the extra income.
Haskins, who started her full-time job in September 2018, is happy with her $50,000 starting salary, but her goal is to make $100,000 a year by age 30.

yes finally! it felt like 80% was based in NYC. Don't sleep on popular millennial cities like Raleigh, Richmond, DC, Dallas, Provo, etc either.
Go global!
I would love to see some people in the major Canadian cities!
this is really one of the few realistic ones. we definitely need to see more from the under $100K crowd
100% agree
I agree
The girl who earns USD210,000.00 per annum in NYC was also relatable. She showed that one doesn't have to live an expensive life just because they make money
Let’s see more from the under $30k crowd
If it’s possible, it’s realistic
No starbucks, no avocado toast, no cupcakes... Graham not gonna like this.
Exactly. She seems to have her $hit together...
And lots of savings in an Ally high interest saving account
Meta af
I was about to say the same thing!!!
CNBC knows he's watching lmao
she can DEFINITELY make 100K by 30 in NYC! that was my goal & i achieved it! change jobs if you have to, and ASK for what you want (very important, especially for us women!)
Congrats Jess! If you don't mind me asking, what do you do for work?
Please tell me what job you have
Jess's Couch what is your career path?
@@iChristianGurl product development
I feel like even $100k in the city is nothing...
She’s very level headed for 23. If I was that savvy, I’d be further ahead in life. Lol 😂
Same
She's Asian. Culturally, she's very different in terms of thought.
I was thinking the same thing. She has a good head on her shoulders!
Alanna Hodgson for real
Alanna Hodgson if I was like that at 23 we’d all have flying cars, free education, healthcare and school, renewable energy, all homeless will be cut in half( from the waist) by 2025
She's extremely fortunate to only be paying $950 in rent in Brooklyn.
She is renting just room, most likely
Yeah, she has at least one roommate
Rush Rush she probably has a sugar daddy
i was looking around actaully if you stay out of popular towns is very doable, something right off manhattan is only 1200 with a roommate , its very doable
Her phone bill is $40 😮😮
Props to her! She’s killing it at 23, she’s going to make well over $100,000 at 30!
Amanda Walker I don’t think graphics designers make that much.Maybe 80k at most.
Unless she is talented enough to be a Sr. Designer or Art Director.
50k is nothing in NY
Unfortunately never
She doesn’t invest....
@@mypeteskimo5307 well she's only 23... she has time
She save 880 a month? Good girl
I make half of what she makes in nyc aswell and save more.
It is, but as she said, it's not just LONGTERM savings, but for travel, emergencies, bits of clothing and whatnot that one may need in future.
Marcel Rodriguez I’d put in more towards the debt repayment and save only 500 a month if it were me.....especially if she has reasonable job security.......it would help minimize interest paid in the end.
Why not pay more on the student loans unless it's low interest?
@Whiskey Earned I'd also question if they're including her employer's contributions to her retirement account in that. I often hear people folding the employer match for 401k's into the 50/30/20 rule. That said, yes, the lack of student debt is a big saver. Indescribable how much more that puts in your pocket in high cost areas
She's focused, realistic, and ambitious. The perfect recipe to her goals by age 30. I wish her the best of luck!
I love millenial money so much please do more of these!
Lila Prosser but the real struggle not the rich people 🤑
Why is it Millennial Money when they feature a Gen Z? Guys, millenials have grown up.
She is not a millennial.she is a early gen.z
She seems frugal, down to earth and very honest person 😊
She sounds just like me when she said that she wanted to make over 100k. I live in New York too and I finally reached that goal through IT. It's definitely possible to hit the 100k mark before reaching 30 years old. She's really smart with her money and ambitious.
@Kay Flip depends where you live in NY and how you use your money.
@Kay Flip you have to be joking -if not, you need to specify what part of NYC because many places in NYC you can live beyond find with that amount especially as a single person.
eiram31 he’s just trolling. He prolly is unemployed in his moms basement don’t even know where ny is.
It’s all relative. Some people like this girl makes $50k and can save money while some people who live in same area with double the income are still heavily in debt.
@Kay Flip The vast majority of people that live in NYC make well under $100k. The median income for an entire family is less than $60k.
Matt Sezer that’s because the vast majority of people in nyc are poor immigrants. There is virtually zero middle class due to high taxes and socialist policies. NYC is a city of extremes, extremely poor and extremely rich. The millionaires even out the average to around 60k
She knows her neighbors and bakes cakes with them! I think that’s incredibly sweet!
That’s better then going to bars for drinks!
Am I the only one who mainly watches these to get insight into other peoples' lifestyles as opposed to just seeing their spending?
I do too
A 20$ tip on a 45 dollar tab? Servers must love you!
naw man thats a rookie mistake. never go over 20 percent.
@@jimindecarlo9356 or you can be kind and do a higher tip :D
@@kahlan6786 I guess I could if we werent all unemployed by the covid
yeah I would tip $5
The tipping culture is just stupid. Only business owners benefit from it. Many countries don't tip. Make the employers pay fair wages
Wow she’s doing great for just 23 years old. I think I was making like 32k at the age after college
MissPuglife it is good but working in NYC might be part of why her income is higher than average post-grads
itstatilol nah, it’s definitely because of her degree in graphic design. I work in NYC and my first job it of college, I made about $38k and I worked in a big, well known media company. I was the HR Assistant/Receptionist
@@goldenxdiva6562 i live in the midwest where everything is considerably cheap and 38k a year is considered very very good money for starting out.
Kylie Finstad i agree but you have to remember, she lives in nyc. the cost of living in brooklyn (which is a part of nyc) is way higher than living in the Midwest
Golden x Diva I know. I’m saying 37k is a lot of money in the Midwest where in nyc, it’s not that great money.
We have similar lifestyle. I live in NY Brooklyn. I think she can def achieve that 100k salary goal. She is very smart with her money at her age!!!
I think Graham finally found his match, no 19 cent coffee outburst needed.
this was the 1st vid i stumbled upon for cnbc make it so i was so impressed on how she was doing😂
Woah I went to school with her
Was she cool?
Was she as insufferable then?
L I e s
Did you smell her aura?
I graduated college 4 years ago and I love watching these videos. They are so informative
This video was really well time as I just graduated recently and its nice to see how others are handling their future. Thank you CNBC for making this content.
I have so much respect for this woman, especially because she's able to responsibly fit in donations on a budget. That's something I haven't really seen and would honestly like to incorporate more in my own budget. Thanks for being a role model and showing millennials in such a good light!
She actually seems really reasonable and smart. Not that much debt and a lot put into savings
This is probably the most sound one I've seen so far. Good job
she seems super normal and down to earth, sounds like any of my friends.
You are amazing Elena! I'm 24 and recently just landed my first job. I save about 2k a month. I'm single so its super easy for me to save. Would love to meet or find someone like Elena one day. haha
You are Asian.
Simp
Simp
lol I do that while living with a dog and renting and car insurance
My boi shooting from outside the gym ⛹️♂️
she's 23 and she already knows the importance of budgeting, saving and working towards her goals. This lady will go far in life. Wonder if she ever came across Dave Ramsey to learn about all this.
No, parents who learned financial literacy over time share that information to their kids. That's how money stays within the family name.
She’s definitely on the right track. So happy to see young people with a good financial mindset
this is so encouraging to see - saving, paying off debt, living within her means !
I love how honest and friendly she is!
GREAT Video! ! ! ! ! ! ! Thank you so much for sharing so many perspectives.
I applaud her tremendously for launching converge. When I left college I was completely lost. It’s an absolutely necessary resource for recent grads. She’s doing great already!
Tipping 44%...Boomers are so LIVID right now.
Jovanny8Soccer I tip 10% cuz I don’t believe in subsidizing someone else’s employee’s salary
@heatism
The server chooses to work there (at that salary). And it's called kindness, and generosity
@@TJ-oo5mx one can simply hand out money to panhandlers on the freeway exits too....different kind of generosity.
You’re crazy. If you are eating out you are abiding by the system and under obligation to tip. If you don’t want to tip, make food at home. Otherwise the server is serving your table for free & you wouldn’t appreciate that at your job.
@@user-lt1jd1ye3v I don't tips at my job :(
She’s so brilliantly grounded & adorable! 🙌🏻
She’s so level headed and wise, bravo to her!
She’s doing great, kudos to her. I’d love to see an episode with someone with student loans and where the parents aren’t the ones paying who is managing it well also. 16k is super low. Granted she lives in NYC so it will take some time.
Finally someone i can relate a little more to salary wise.
but the main affect is how much debt you have or don't for the amount you are able to afford
I’d like to see an educator and their salary and expenses!
IMO, she should save a little less and pay off those student loans quicker. The faster she gets out of debt the better.
tbf if she’s making more in interest than the student loan APR it’s probably more beneficial to make regular payments and invest the rest of her money
@@DC-ee9de the interest rates for student loans are 4-8%. Ally only pays 1.9%. The stock market is very unpredictable right now. she is pretty off paying all of the student loans and living completely debt free.
If the student loans are charging low interest regularly investing and building an emergency fund are both more important.
Herp Derp she is not saving log term, those savings are for travel, clothes, etc tc.. as it is stated there
King Pins she still said she had loans lol
Graham is going to be proud of her!! Smart girl
Graham is going to be so happy! Ally account and picnics
They switched the title format back!
Who is Graham? This is the first video I've watched from this channel and sooo many comments have mentioned him
Cookie Monster graham Stephan. He does videos reacting to these millennial money videos
I swear CNBC watches grahms videos and finds people that do things by his standards
People actually apply to them :D But yeah, Grahms reaction videos are key :D
It would be interesting if CNBC did one on Graham!
@@AskMiko this aged well.
Something something GRAHAM something 20 cent iced coffee something.
Stannis Baratheon Graham will have a lot of good things to say about this 23 yo. I’m sure she won’t allow her future fiancé to spend 40k on a ring
I loveeee this episode! Please more videos like this! I’m currently on an aggressive debt payoff plan and my goal is to have a budget like hers especially for the savings! I live in NY and make a little more than her and this is so inspiring to be able to actually live in NYC, have a social life and save money is goals!
This is one my favorites so far 👏🏾 reasonable budget and realistic salary
Graham won't see this as great finance advice material but he'll appreciate how she is handling her finances!! Nice job Elena--so level headed for 23!!
She is a SMART 23 years old . she is making good choices , she is on a good path.
Great job, Elena! You're killing it! 👍
This has been a very helpful episode. I am wondering if you have plans to make one on Vancouver, Canada with their crazy rent and phone bills.
Your very responsible! Keep doing what your doing!
It seems like she's subscribed to Graham...... she even mentioned robinhood.. Graham is gonna cry while watching this millenial money...
After graduating from 4 yr college, I was doing temp office jobs initially, and later landed a permanent job pulling in only $24K/yr + annual bonus working at a finance co. in NYC. Needless to say, she is doing way better than me after college.
The most realistic budget and lifestyle ever seen on this channel history!!!
A breath of fresh air after all those videos of 25 yr olds earning $205k.
She is super smart and focused for a 23 year old. I like how she is cutting down on make up, that actually saves up a lot of money. :P
I like these series a lot.
Graphic design is so cool! I love these kinds of careers
Wow! $950 is pretty good for (I believe) Bushwick in Brooklyn! Probably have roommates though...
I think 23 in 2020 is considered gen Z
It is
please do more of these!
Fave most realistic one of all. Please more like this! More average income earners as that is most of us
I love that she seems to have Mindy Kaling on her wall!
Her electricity and water bill is so low! $50 a month including wifi. Good on her for keeping her carbon output low.
Lots of people do not pay for water in nyc
She’s so level headed🙌🏾💜
Wow she sounds like she is actually doing a great job. Good for her. Love her picnic idea and her homemade cake! With her attitude she will be financially independent in no time.
She’s actually lucky she got right out of college into a career she had a scholarship and said her parents helps her pay the little student loans she does have she makes a salary she doesn’t have to live paycheck to paycheck like most ppl who get out of college do and don’t get jobs right away
Best millennial money!
Good job young lady. Your parents did a phenomenal job. Best of luck to you and your endeavors. I have a feeling we will be seeing more of you in the future...I’m predicting Forbes 🤗
Wow. That's so interesting. I feel it's not about how much you earn but how you spend that matters and she's quite good at it!!
Graham won’t like this one cause she’s doing everything right! Jk 🤣 what an awesome story!!!
I used to like coming to the comments on these types of videos. Not so much now because I already know what they're going to say 🤣🙄
It's even more annoying now cause they keep talking about Graham
Exactly!! I watch some of his videos but this is getting ridiculous 🤣
I like his channel but as always the viewers seem to be the ones making things annoying. Some of them are disappointed that she is not a person who blows their money on crap all because Graham won't have a lot to criticize, therefore his react won't be entertaining
I am so relieved someone said it. I used to watch millennial money type of videos to put some things in perspective and give me ideas. But it is not the same anymore with these comments. So sad there is only one perspective now...
Some person, graham
This person here. We love this person.
Rent prices in New York is no joke! But, I do love New York. Great city. Electric.
Could someone drop the details of her side hustles? I wanna support her!
This is me. I made 57k last year at 23, and I also live in Brooklyn
Also me at 63k at 23
I make just starting 6 figure income & my rent is $985 in Buffalo, NY.
People should move out of costly cities.
I used to stay in MA state, my rent was $1700 excluding utilities. Asked my company to allow me to work from home. Moved to Buffalo, Ny. Saving $700 on rent.
She definitely seems like she's going to be very successful in life. I hope that when my time to enter the real world comes, I am as competent and forward thinking as she is.
Grahm is going to love this !
This girl lives on my street 😳
What size card board do y'all sleep on?
She's fake she doesn't look like a Haskin

@@zenplayss_ whats it called not. a stalker just looking for affordable apartment in nyc lol
Amakusa Yoshi actually Jones here aren’t as small as it seems . My place is pretty spacious and have high ceilings
You have a good head on your shoulders I have no doubt you will reach your goals. Good Luck.
She is such a down to earth woman, I love her. Great example
I need to meet this girl!
Graham will definitely comment on her "miscellaneous" expenses lol
Awesome, it all depends what borough you live and the neighborhood. I brought a co-op in the Bronx northeastern (Mitchell lama) pay the same exact amount she pays. For a one bedroom, (mortgage and Maintence) combined. It’s all about doing what works for you. You can thrive in nyc, just don’t go chasing waterfalls ($3000 and up for rent)
I LOVE this girl! I totally wish I started saving so much when I was this young. She will def have a bright future 😊
When she said percentage and savings you know graham was like I found my soulmate lol
I can't wait to be on this lol. I'm not ready now but soon.
A 1 bedroom apartment in NYC goes for atleast $1600. So anything lower you are renting a room.
this women is so good with her finance
Graham would have tough time criticizing her
Graham!
There did my part.
Get ready for Grahams next episode!!!
She has a monthly budget for donation...wow hats off to her
Guess we won't be needing that graham guy this time. This girl knows her finances
Really good, really promising. She understands frugality well. And her viewpoint at 4:42...👍👌
They literally showed her roommate in the video yet people keep questioning how she found an apartment for only $950.
That's further into the video than most people watched
Good job she’s doing graphic design really cool but a technical job
If Elena is a typical Millennial then I think the world will be fine. She is definitely MUCH more level headed than I was at 23.
Graham let’s go
Calling in Graham to make a reaction video and then I’ll watch lol
who's Graham?
wow, a responsible young adult....who knew! Good job!
