This is the latest installment of Millennial Money, which profiles people across the U.S. and details how they earn and spend their money.
Chloe Potter, 26, moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, nearly two years ago. She’d been living at home in Boca Raton, Florida, after graduating from college and was ready for a change, she tells CNBC Make It: “I wanted to be in a space that I could make mine and start my own life.”
She considered big cities like New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles, but the cost of living was too high.
“I ended up doing a bunch of research and finding out that Charlotte was a growing city with a lot of job opportunities,” she says. Plus, it’s a place where she felt she could “make it work financially.”
She borrowed $1,000 from her grandmother to make the move and couch-surfed for a few months while job searching. She landed a 9-to-5 job at a mortgage company and waited tables on the side to save enough money to pay back her grandmother and rent an apartment.

@@cocomarineblu993 Exactly I agree!
Yes, finally get Graham Stephan on the show. With do many viewers requesting that, you're just being silly (or a fool, if you're doing it on purpose) by not having it done long time ago.
Ya, what Coco said above. More of these videos and from across the country! We want more Millennial Money. 3 times a week ideally.
Please keep making these 😍
I support anyone getting into the coffee business...and I love coffee...so I just placed an order through her site :)

I better see a reaction video ASAP!! Can't wait.
Wow youre famous on this channel

Chloe is the most normal person you’ve had on here. Her situation is so relatable! Would love to hear a recap on her in a year.

I totally agree. The most honest too.

$600 in food nahhhh sis that ain’t it
She is eating healthy & burn a lot of energy doing workouts. That's about right unless you want her to buy canned food
@@TruthHurts1871 nope
@@TruthHurts1871 Yep I agree eating healthy cost money.
@Johnny Doeboy Whole foods are you crazy I don't shop at any expensive stores. I even garden on a decent size scale. That's not cheap either.
I'm vegan like her and don't spend nearly as much as her in groceries. The 600 probably includes dining out.
Spends $600 a month on food, yet says she cannot afford health insurance? Girl, come on...
Jessica Tollefson nonsense
Health Insurance is also much more important than a gym membership....
@@naviarex101 PX90 is cheaper than a gym membership. Save the money and get health insurance.
She eats organic and they're vegan. Goes to the gym...she's already on prevention steps to where she can do without insurance for awhile.
@@marisaford1120 That is incorrect on multiple fronts. I am a research scientist at a cancer institute and see plenty of health conscious young adults that are not spared from the disease . Yes eating less read meat ant exercising has benefits, but no way near preventative to the degree that you don't need health insurance. Furthermore, she should at least have super basic catastrophic health insurance - accidents happen to everyone. When I was 22 I woke up one day and had retinal detachment. I was grateful I had health insurance to cover the 50k in eye surgery. One doesn't gamble with health.
Graham will definitely say remove $120 subscriptions expense and reduce $600 food to $300 and add that $420 to savings !!
luvtotrade2009 I would say no and keep the gym, but cut back the food to half.
No he’d say take that $420 and pay off her $7,000 debt even quicker. Not having debt on the books will make getting loans for her business easier and less interest over the long run
He’ll even say toss the pets out the window.
Just take the 420 and blaze it 😎
Holy smokes!! $600 on food?! Im vegan too and I spend $125!! I eat mostly whole foods too. Im curious what she buys lol
PeachyVegan most likely a lot of restaurants
Weed
What do you eat raw dirt and grass with that budget? It can't be fulfilling.
Olivia Green what do u buy? I would like spend $125 for food.
She’s eating out too much.
This was very realistic to me. No savings, spending too much on food and $100 a month on fitness but no insurance. Sounds like the struggling millennials I know. She'll get it together.
I really enjoyed her story. Instead of ragging on her for reasonable expenses, perhaps she should talk to her company about a raise. $38,000 for a loan officer seems extremely low - if she can negotiate her salary up to $45,000 (after all, her company offers no health insurance OR retirement, so they should compensate through other means) and use the extra income for health insurance, retirement, building a savings account and debt repayment, she'll be well on her way. Work for a larger company and forget the startup if necessary. She needs more income and benefits
It’s North Carolina we cheap af
Yeah North Carolina with a salary like hers is like a million to us here in SoCal!! I easily spend $600 a week on organic food. I also spend $200 a month on haircuts and manicures
heatism that’s crazyyy but things are also cheaper in NC so
BREEZEBLOCKS starting teacher salary in Charlotte is 40k. If she started at 22. She would be pulling 44k. Nah, she’s getting screwed over when teacher are making more than her
Getting an annual raise of 7k would only cover a health care policy.. you couldn't do all of those things with that small of a raise. She definitely needs to cut costs on expenses and make more money to do all those things you're taking about.
CrossFit and no health insurance. A winning combination!
Crossfit wore my body completely out. I ended having to go to chiropractors and masseuse on a regular basis. I guess I'm too #OldLameDetached lol
Healthy people get sick too..
@@dnfkghs Insightful.
Avoid startups if you aren't in tech or in a big city -- they don't grow fast enough for your livelihood. Just work for a big corp and work the side hustle business.
Dean Tan why do you say this?
Small cities dont have enough demand in them to grow a start up. Infrastructure and laws is also not so good for start ups in small towns. There is a reason why they are small
Fair statement unless the start-up she’s a part of is based out of a major city
or, here's a neat trick....MOVE to a big city. BTW, Charlotte is a pretty up and coming city. Go there while rent is cheap I say.
@Maxwell Gill 2 bedroom? Oh buddy, I'm from NYC, that's a steal to me. I know my cousin pays $1400 for one of those special HOA-like rental areas, 3-bedroom. Sans the hoa fees of course.
A lot of criticism in the comments, but I’d like the thank you for sharing your financial story. I wish the best to you and your new business!
I think many people in the comments are constructive and doing it out of care, not because of disrespect. Of course, she should ignore the rude comments.
I also laud her for courage to share her story and her entrepreneurship and sleeping on couches that I can relate.
No savings, no health insurance, credit card debt, and a “business” that doesn’t make money? Dios mio. First of all, that “business” is a hobby, and one she can’t afford. She doesn’t seem at all stressed that she’s in debt to the tune of 1/4 of her gross annual income. She’s overpaying for the gym. She’s one minor setback away from insolvency. Not a role model.
Drew Conway These brief videos, are a glimpse at different perspectives. Not every business is successful from the start. I paid my way through college, from working part time gigs and having a small business. That small business was started 100% from 0% credit cards, and took a little over a year to see profits. That business was sold off a few years ago, for over half a million. Sometimes, you just have to take the gamble.
Wow! What a pessimistic way to punch someone in the gut when they're down. Consider yourself lucky that it ain't you, let her love and live her life and dream big.
Excatly what I'm saying she has no priorities
@Andre Bonaparte what kind of stupid reasoning is that?
That's how businesses start, no profit. You'd always make more money if you worked for someone compared to starting a business. The keyword is 'start'.
Her expenses are out of control. For someone who claims to work 70-80 hours a week she sure does spend a lot of time/money on food and subscriptions.
She was working 80 hours a week
@@nabilion 80 hours a week? Making 38k? That's minimum wage. I would quit in a heartbeat
There’s no room in her budget for health insurance yet she can spend $600 on food?
She can definitely do it on her salary.
She seems healthy so I don't think she needs health insurance. But I entirely agree she needs to cut on food on that income.
@@bsarioz Just because you're healthy doesn't mean you don't need health insurance!
ً you’re brainwashed
@@Sageboy13 Not really, just been hospitalized 3 times and thankful that I didn't have to pay a penny for the ambulance.
Born and raised in Charlotte super happy they made a video here
Graham is going to freak.
Business has no profit
She's in debt
OH YEA, AND NO SAVINGS
All while $600/mo is going to food. This is going to be a juicy one.
And she spends more on food than rent.
After watching this I said Graham is going to eat her alive. 🤦
His reactions arent even that genuine anymore, plus is just weird when he judges someone who is obviously working her butt off to make a living and start a business. Her spending isnt really that bad. groceries are a bit high, but still.
He’s was already in the comments. He ordered coffee from her
She has enough money to spend 600 on groceries but not 200 for insurance? Girl. Priorities! And I’m vegan, you can make it work for much less of that.
Poor thing. She is one injury away from basically being bankrupt.
I'd take my knowledge, go to a chem gym that has weights and forget the expensive gym!
She's not getting health insurance for 200 dollars a month in her situation. No kids, single, 38k a year, I'll bet she'd pay AT LEAST 500 a month for fairly high deductible Obamacare - especially without her employer chipping in.
My family is vegan and we live in the same area... We don't even spend $600 to feed our whole family lmao this is too much. She is too old to be living like that lbs
Exactly... I’m not vegan, organic accounts 50% of my shopping list, get fresh produce, and live in Manhattan. I spent $130 every month during quarantine, and approx. $200 in normal month when I’d go out with friends. There’s really no excuses for bad choices and wrong priorities
@@dexter131 she would pay around $300 a month
“When you love something enough you just start and figure it out”. That is exactly what I told myself when I started Purpose Activewear. Chloe keep up that positive attitude and it will all pay off.💪🏾🙏🏾🏆
This was an interesting one seeing I’m living in Charlotte. Found her coffee page seems she’s already relocated back to Fl.
I would have saved 6-8 months in an emergency fund, payed off my debt then save to start my business.
I wish her success!
Waiting three to four years for the coffee business to start making money? She must be kidding
It's such a competitive / saturated space.
I live in Finland and we are so lucky as we have free healthcare, i couldnt imagine living in the US without health insurance.

I find this story so relatable. I wish I could do what she did, move and start a coffee business which is something I've thought about since I'm a teenager but I'm too deep in my job. I think she's awesome!
She's splitting rent in Charlotte. She'll be fine 😂
Who can make it first, Graham Stephan or Meet Kevin? (Or am I just writing this to make you think I'll react to it first? *Shrug*)

does it matter?
*This is what happens when your philosophy on money is just about what feels good.* I really hope she takes the time to financially educate herself. There's nothing wrong with the amount of money she makes, but she's sooooo comfortable with no savings, no retirement, no health insurance, and no profits from her company. I hope she aspires for more in life. If her boyfriend leaves her, she's back to couch surfing, and that's no way for any millennial woman to live sis!
💯
Unfortunately there's an entire breed of millenial entrepreneurs like her. Heads in the clouds, priorities not straight, not thinking longterm.
This is so refreshing. Outcome as expected. Compared to “I make $200k a year living in El Paso, TX” and I get to save $10k a month
I love that her situation is relatable! Nice to see someone like her and that she is starting a business. I am too and it can be tough to make sacrifices.
Treat the debt like its an all out emergency. Clear it asap.
That's my biggest concern with this video, she doesn't seem to realize how big of an emergency she is in/Will be in with the slightest tooth ache or ear infection. Watching this gave me anxiety
Yes.. best advice for anyone!
this was so inspiring and her honesty made it easy to relate to.
Lived in Charlotte for the first half of the year. Loved it. Cost of living is low for a major city. Lots of cool people from everywhere. Moved to California for work. Definitely miss the vibe of Charlotte
120 on subscriptions and 600 on food? But no insurance?
She needs to see a financial advisor/counselor
Girl, I believe in you. You have the passion and nobody in the world can teach you anything about that. But if you see this comment, Graham Stephan on RUclips takes calls and gives financial/business advice. He said on his channel he wants to help you out. You’ve made it from couches to here, I want to see you keep going up 😄🙌🏻
“Health is important” but doesn’t have health insurance. Come on
Notoruis Hacker I died when she said that
Well if she is health, she doesn’t need health insurance. It’s just waste of money if u never go to the doctor lol get it?
Fishy You know who I am health insurance is also for things like accidents. If she wrecks her shoulder doing her stupid CrossFit, she needs surgery ($15-30k). Get it?
I go to Crossfit, for the last 2 years, and it’s been great! I love it. I go almost everyday. But with that said, if I lived in a strict budget it would be the first to go, and I will certainly opt for a cheaper option. If Crossfit has taught me anything, is that working out doesn’t have to be intimidating. Minimal equipment, some dumbbells and kettlebells or even sandbags, etc. at home or a cheaper gym can yield great results with the right mindset. I would put the extra 100 dollars a month into paying off debt first.
Finally a normal person in a different city, I’m tired of LA and NY
Normal is boring tho. Charlotte has too many normal ppl
I love how the comment section is always full of experts.
600 for food? I remember when I first lived on my own, my grocery was about 200-300 a month. It was tough but I had to change my eating habits to make it work. Rarely ate out and cooked all my meals.
Graham's going to freakout about this one. $600 a month on food and no savings?
I wonder how she’s doing now with the shut down
i would think she is working from home if not work for someone else that lets her at this time.
This is why people need to save their money.
No health insurance, no savings? Just wait till someone gets a toothache 😢
Realistic, hard working, and she seems really nice. Thanks for showing someone from a smaller city.
How are you consuming 150 dollars a week worth in food??
I get that it’s organic/vegan but Jesus lol
Save half that money and cook more
She should take advantage of local community gardens.
I spend 500 per month on eating out
That's not the worst of it. The worst part of it is how it negatively affects everyone else in the community. When people shop like this, no matter the income, businesses feel it's ok to raise the price of goods because people will pay for it no matter their income. It makes us frugal people pay more for what used to be half the cost. Then these same big spenders complain why is the cost of goods rapidly increasing when they don't see what they do.
They must eat out at restaurants or cafe's a lot.
Lives in North Carolina and can't find cheap healthy food? That don't make any sense to me.
Awaiting on reactions.
Should I even watch the original? 😂
She forgot to mention how much "assistance" she is receiving from family.
Yep.
I think this sounds mean.
Ally Colina Welcome to the internet.
Brian Glover has to be getting some help!
I don't think she's receiving any help from her family. She did mention she has credit card debt.
$600 on food while making $38k is insane. Multiple it by 12 months and she is spending roughly 19% of her income on food for 1 person.
Me and my wife make $190k per year, and we spend $1,200 on groceries
/dinning for a family of 5 (2 elderly adults, 2 working adults, and one cute baby).
Agent_WestCoast A cool story
Don't the old folks get a pension or retirement? Why can't they but there own food? Or help cover some expenses.

I love coffee and I love your story, if I am ever able to support before I leave, I will do so !
I liked this MM. She seems really cool person with a good perspective and drive for what she wants. She should try and negotiate a raise at her job so she could save a little bit more. $600 for food! The family of 5 of my parents spends less than that. What is going on?
I like how she just went for it on her business dream 👍🏼
Being in Real Estate in Charlotte... I love seeing this! Thank you for sharing.
It's great to see how people make sacrifices to do a living, I truly admire them, 'cause we're all in the same path; nice looking couple too, really loved this interview
It is very easy to live on 38k a year in Charlotte. It's still relatively cheap
It would be if she made smarter money choices.
I totally agree with you Since half all people in America make less than 35,000 a year She’s in the upper 50% don’t they ever do someone that’s actually living on minimum-wage and struggling lol
As a person who lives in Charlotte it is NOT easy to make it on 38k when the avg rent is 1200-1400/mnth for a decent area
I make twice that in Fayetteville, NC just physically working income... I also invest my money wisely. Plus I keep up with my fitness because I'm a SSG in the Army Reserves. Seeing that she make $38k work in Charlotte... I am now curious on moving there.

She’s very pleasing and inspiring. Hope she succeeds launching her company!
I can relate to her. Unlike "Jane and Jim" who's parents gave them money at their wedding and cleared their debt for them and helped them with the mortgage.
I understand Chloe
Yea but spending $600 per month on food while carrying debt is irresponsible as well. She should be getting rid of that debt ASAP instead of dining out. As many others have pointed out, even vegans can spend far less on food per month. I've seen families of four spend less than that by cooking at home.
$100/mo on the gym and no health insurance.
$600/Mo on food and no savings.
An unknown amount of money making coffee that isn’t profitable and likely will never be profitable since she has no legitimate business plan, and yet is in debt for an amount nearly 1/4 of her salary.
All of these above problems despite getting “help” from her family...
This is a person you understand???
Nope my parents didn't help me with my bills and yet I was still able to get a lot of my debt paid off and saved 20k at the age of 26.
She said her parents help lmfao
1. Reduce food expenses
2. Get rid of the pets
3. Minimize the subscriptions
No ones gonna “get rid of their pet to save a buck” wtf??? So many other things she can cut back on especially the gym and how she grocery shops
@@jovandraganescu1406 apologies, someone should get rid of a pet. But if someone is not making a lot of money they should not have a pet. A pet is like a kid, food, care, and time. People need to consider these things. Maybe a fish, but fish food, aquarium, filters, etc add up.
Great break down I just moved to Charlotte. I love that she is not letting her debt stress her out and be her main focus. Luckily she doesn't have student loan debt and has a partner to split the rent with. Very bold moving to a new city with no savings.
Really happy you included my city! She's actually around my salary so this was very interesting. I have some debt too, but I have insurance through my job plus benefits. And I split rent with a roommate
CrossFit and no health insurance...oh boy!!!!!!
The cure for Graham's Thursday blues!
I have lived in Charlotte my whole life, and for my friends and I who went to college and came back, our experience is very different. Unless you work in finance.
There are gyms with amazing facilities for $20 a month. And food expenses can be cut down.
I spend about €200 a month on food but I do cook quite a bit. It's cheaper and healthier. If she just makes these what seem like minor adjustments, her life will be so much better.
cutting out expensive groceries, tattoos, subscriptions, and unnecessary/expensive clothing would completely free her up to pay off the debt. hard to watch
If my wife ever calls me her "partner" I will quickly become a sole proprietor. LOL!
This is one of my favorites!!!
I really admire her dedication and go getter mentality! You go girl! 😁👏🏾
Finally a Millenial Money I can relate to
Same
Should have put a link to her coffee business, CNBC. This lady needs all the help she can get. When your in debt.
Charlotte is a great city ! I moved from one of the big cities and life is so much better here
I lived in Charlotte for 21 yrs, all my kids were born there, now we’re in Dallas so glad we moved
Yeah, you don’t need to spend 100 dollars a month for a gym membership. That’s insane.
I also can't "afford" health insurance, but with insulin costing close to $1,000 a month, I have to find a way to make it work out. She's lucky she doesn't have any health issues or else she'd be in even more debt than she is.
This is why u need to vote for Bernie Sanders he’s getting Americans insulin for cheaper they are over pricing Americans what cost $300 cost 30$ in Canada, if u haven’t read up on it u should
@@ken23493 Trust me, I'll only vote for a candidate that supports single-payer healthcare, which Sanders supports. The thing is that insulin is only the tip of the iceberg. Test strips, continuous glucose monitor sensors, insulin pump tubing/infusion sets, and doctor visits all add up to close to another additional $1000 a month if you don't have insurance or have a high deductible plan. Unlike insulin, you can skimp on some of those things, but it's crazy to potentially sacrifice your health so corporations can become richer.
It's a shame what big pharma has done to this country, no one should have to pay that much to keep themselves alive absolutely horrible
So cool! Love her vision for her business future.
Very interesting video, I like to see how this turns out
“can’t afford insurance with a growing small business” but they just said her profit ranges between $30-$400 a month... honey that’s not growing, that’s a hobby
Graham this is for you man
I’ve looked into the coffee business and you’d be lucky to make a profit at all owning a coffee shop. Any profit you make probably won’t be able to cover your living expenses unless you own multiple locations (like ten or more). A lot of owners of these shops just keep going deeper into debt to keep the business open. I imagine that’s what’s going to happen to her if she tries to open a coffee shop. Just because you’re passionate about something doesn’t make it a good business decision.
This is one of the most realistic I've seen as far as food. I find it hard to believe that so many on here that make over 100k only spend like $200-300 a month on food including groceries, delivery, drinks and going out.
You answer to the IRS
Charlotte NC is extremely expensive now. I make 60 k a year with no children and I can barely afford it :(
I like the fact that she doesnt BS about coffee business, most small businesses dont make money or barely break even when it comes to starting up a business in the first couple of years
People have already said that $600/month on food is a lot, which it is. But you've said you are both vegan and choose to buy stuff that fulfills this need in a specific way so 👍🏽 As for the rest, really embodying the Millennial struggle in a way that a lot of the other videos from Millennial Money just don't so hats off to ya, doing your best in life and trying not to let it all get you down. Now that I can relate to
Millenial Money | "I make only 38k a year, but I need to spend money on organic food and I met my partner at Cross Fit."

I find it strange y’all only interviewing people that focus on expenses and not on income and investments and side hustles? 🤔 it like the 7 - 8 of them! Just saying
To echo some of the sentiments expressed in previous comments: THANK YOU for featuring a person NOT living in NYC/LA/Boston/Seattle/San Francisco. I agree what we put in our bodies is important but $600? And yet no health insurance AND no emergency fund? I think the Budget needs a little tweaking to incorporate at least an Emergency Fund.
