    Nice video - and thank you for sharing your insight about what is really wrong with these gpu - the problem is in the chip not the bga solder pad. But then why did you heat the gpu from the bottom? If you reflow the gpu from the top where actual silicon is exposed, then it will take lot less heat and is safer. I did mine at 330 deg c/ 50 seconds from the top and it worked fine.

    • @tossancuyota7848
      @tossancuyota7848 Год назад +1

      he did that to avoid the sudden thermal drop and to stabalize the chip into position with the melted lead, cause heat can do two things on a chip either expand or shrink and with that chip exposed to an environtment with alot lower temp itll cause it to crack/break / or sometimes pop like i did with mine lol and i do precaution with it like slowly lowering that temp while pulling the hotair away but it did cracked ived learned it the hardway like sorin did ive done gpu reballing the same way now just dont forget to change that thermal pad or thermal paste cause theyd be dried sometimes cause of the heat

    • @MixYourWay

      It basically 'revives' dry solder joints around it and somewhat restores conductivity. It works, I've tried it on bigger Gpus but they'll need to be replaced eventually. Maybe 3 months, maybe 6 more months. Depending on average usage time/intensity.

    But why did u heated up the back of the chip, and then took the heat away? You tried to see if the fan will start, or you wanted to re-melt the chip soldering? So the fan didn't start, what that meaned? Then you decided the old thermal is not working well? Where is the thermic sensor, on the chip?

      Hi. I have this issue. My motherboard is dead, I ordered a new one so I see this as a challenge. My motherboard is Asus K53SD rev 6.0. I turn on my laptop, power button is on, caps lock is on, little led light (marked as light bulb) is on, but my screen is black. Fan works normally, I can hear the hdd spinning. I tried all those easy fixes; switching ram, taking out cmos battery, holding power button for a minute, etc.
      I tried the external display via vga and hdmi. Nothing. So my suspicion was right from the beginning, dead graphics chip. I disassembled the laptop, took apart everything from the motherboard and tried the bare test (just motherboard with cooling system connected to external display); still nothing.
      I even tried cutting power to graphics chip and creating it to UMA (I took out it's voltage regulator); still nothing. I checked my display (learned that from one of your videos), there is 19v, 5 and 3.3 power supply.
      Any help would be most appreciated.
      By the way, your videos are great learning material. I learned alot. Thank you.
      I use this electronic tinkering as an escape from my stressful job and my stressful life. It calms me down.

      James Domaboc, reflowing your graphics chip is the solution. I did it a while back, and it inhaled new life into my dead motherboard. I just checked it, works just fine, but I already installed a new motherboard. My old one was killed by the heat. This time I cut out 6 cm circle inside a bottom laptop cover, just below the graphics chip. Installed a small 5v, 5 cm diameter cooling fan. I covered it with a stainless steel grill I scavenged from my old desktop power supply. Soldered its power to USB slot. Now fan starts when I start my laptop. No more overheating.

    Thank you for your explainings. I work about graphic card repairing. I am a civil engineer but i like repairing some electronical cards. Now, i try to repair a laptop: Acer Aspire 5750g. I have 19 volts at all of power supply. I have 4 ohms at gpu power supply, 16 ohms at 2 rail CPU power supply, Stand by powers 3.3v and 5.0v ok. All of power supplies gives their voltages, only CPU power rails can't give their voltages when i push the power button. When i push power button: power led is coming up, i/o chip starting test of system, cooling fan turns and it goes to off about 5 seconds later. What do you thing about that?

    • @jarnovilen5259

      Not that easily, since the gap is too big and the pressure too low for thermal paste usually. The elasticity of the thermal pad is required for constant and proper contact hence heat conduction.

      Just watched this today. I wish I had found this video a month ago because I had the same problem.I eventually fixed it but by replacing the graphics chip which is very difficult. One comment. You can generally tell it's a graphics chip problem and not corrupt Bios or memory because the hard disk light will act like a normal boot sequence and when it stops will continue showing activity when you hit "Enter" as Windows continues boot sequence even with no screen lighting. With BIOS and memory problems you won't see this sequence of hard disk activity indicated by the hard disk light in almost all failure modes where no video is visible. Again, great video.

    I have a Dell Dimension 3000 it's not showing a pitcher on the monitor so I googled it so tell me if this is the problem so I can get a pitcher Baroni701
    The 3000, has no AGP or PCIe slot, you need to buy a PCI graphics card.
    The 3000 troubleshooter is here BEV ??? Another thing I pulled up on google is change the Hard Drive and Dvd Drive or change the TFT and 1 CRT or the HDD but what will be the simplest thing for me to do to get pitcher and the Tower comes on ???

    Hi, GPU? I have no BSD or artifacts but when i turn on, the screen either has picture normal or totally black- tried hot and cold do diff. . I have swapped out CPU, Ram, PS (19V good anyway at mosfets) When it does work, Video plays normal for about 5 mins then gets jittery like frames dropping out. NO ERRORS or BSD. MB will stay on forever and fans spin as usual. Could it be PS around GPU or only GPU? Already changed paste, pads ect and heatsink was clear. Thanks

    If only reflowing was a permanent fix. It's all rubbish, even reballing. It will last a few months before it fails again. The GPU is dying, it needs replacing. The Dell 5010 is the worst laptop I have ever seen for GPU failure.
    The 5010 does run quite hot, often the cooling fan doesn't kick in until around 65-70 celcius, this isn't the case on similar Dell models such as the 5030. 5040 and 5110 where the fan steps in around 55-60 celcius.

    I noticed you used paste on cpu and looked hard for a pad for gpu is there a reason you did
    not just use the paste on both?

      ranny day those kinds of chips don't have a surface to transfer heat like the casing of a cpu does! So, they go with pads to act as that intermideary mateial. Also! It depends on the pads u use. Some specify to apply some thermal paste and some don't! But generally, you don't because it ends up being a waste! Those laptops are never really used for heavy tasks, anyway! The real thing is to keep a clean airway and to keep the CPU at good temps always! Also! That pad on the back of the chip will help a lot to dissipate heat to the keyboard! So, next time you open up your out of the shelf laptop for dust blowing, put one of those guys in there!

    I have a laptop in which the screen has several blurry horizontal lines with a wider one near the bottom. Sometimes the screen has only the one wider white line near the bottom and the rest of the screen is black. I can't ever see any text on the screen so I can't boot up. When I try connecting an external monitor to the unit, the monitor gets no signal. What would you suspect to be the problem with this unit?

    @electronics repair school: Hi,
    Some keys of my Lenovo X270 keyboard were not working so I've decided to replace it myself.
    I was very cautious and followed the service manual and best practices and could remove the faulty keyboard successfully.
    I plugged back all the ribbon cables and everything into its place.
    The issue is now the laptop turns ON (green light, the fan also turns, there is no beep unless I remove RAM memory) but the screen remains black.
    I've tried to connect it to an external monitor (and keyboard/mouse) but it didn't work.
    I've removed the CMOS battery for a while and put it back on but it didn't help.
    I have a big issue because when I wanted to connect the SSD drive to another laptop to access at least my data and back it up, it asks for BitLocker key which I never set (only had Windows session password) and I believe it is security/tamper protection from the old laptop.
    Could you please tell me what can be the issue? The GPU?
    Thanks a lot for your help.

    My friend, the color of the screen is shifting in my laptop and there are lines, but when I reflect it to the monitor with VGA, it works perfectly smoothly. Is the problem with the video card or the leptop lcd?

      Whatever happened - happened. But in the future build the habit of changing the thermal paste (maintenance) every spring and you won't have an overheating laptop on your hands. It's like a car - you can't just buy it and drive it without an oil change. And once you forget and do serious damage, the solution is never as cheap as regular maintenance. ;)
