hi, i dont understand one thing, if the transistor was short why do not change it and you look for other components if they short to ground?
My mistake, its not the transistor on short, its was the transinstor pin to the ground! that transistor its on serial mode with 19v ,so even if its on short, the laptop still should work fine
so if i understanding correctly ( transistor is a resistor who can change the value) the pin of transistor should not be ground and the video why saw it was going to ground, thats why looking for short to ground component?

I've been a technician for quite some time but most I do is parts replacement on laptops/smartphones and never really dived into motherboard level repair. I recently got into laptop motherboard repairs and revived quite a few old laptops in my shop now thank to your teachings 👍👍👍

Awesome tutorial. AFAIK, @23:00 if all 3 caps are in parallel, multimeter won't help bc whole bank is shorted, heat dissipation is the key.

dude your awesome I have taken my laptop to two techs and say there is a short need new motherboard, but I see you looking to fix short this is where best do and mediocre don't do so they lose business. I like people that go the extra mile or do what somebody else said can't be done nice job ACE!. I AM gonna have to fix my laptop by myself thanks.

If you follow his previous videos very well you will know it is petrol. This man could be ridiculous sometimes...hahahahaha
@ Josh Champlin....he is using Zippo lighter fluid. It evaporates quickly as you saw when the high current draw hit the middle cap. Smart man.

lighter fluid but you can also use isoproponal alcohol

@@martijn4740 ummm.. I saw sparks at one point. you pour lighter fluid on the motherboard and sparks can't ignite it? That is exactly how a cigarette lighter works. Wick draws up lighter fluid, flick the wheel to generate a spark and the lighter fluid in the wick ignites.

Your welcome. I've tried the ISO evaporation method on a board i worked on last week. No luck. It draws 7.2 amps from the 3.3 volt power supply (external substitution) and not a single damn things gets hot, or even warm, on the boards. The power leads get hot - lol. I must have an inner layer board short or short under one of the ball grid chips (really hefty tin whisker maybe). Anyway, you video setup for your power supply and DVM readout works so well, along with the video source of you and your microscope. I was very impressed.
I had tantalum caps in short before and they don't get hot, try to isolate the 3.3V power supply from the rest and try to see what is happening there with your multimeter in continuity mode.
But remove the tantalum of your 3v3 power rail and see how it goes, it is easier to solder back again.
And never put 7.2Amps because your board traces and vias might not be able to handle so much current and you will end up destroying your board. Usually 2.5 Amps would be enough to test things up and for a short period of time.

its a power supply (two mosfets, one coil and one chip) for every voltage rail

Yes Anders, you are right, every rail is created from the 19V main power rail with 2 mosfets, an inductor and a capacitor. Sometimes you'll see more than one power rail output connected to each other, they are outputting the same voltage but they are there for higher current draws.

excellent work mate, I've recently been given a 12month old laptop acer swift 3 and its dead, no power light, no charge light, so I'm learning what i can from you so i can try to diagnose the problem and hopefully fix it. I just dont have a microscope, heat gun, or nice clicking voltimeter like you.....yet....^_^

Eventually. It would not be a proper repair if you did not replace the capacitor.

Hi,I have watched quite many of your videos in a short time. I like your videos and your approach very much. I started looking at free schematics for two Acer laptops/Wistro/Taiwan. I was looking for the mosfet switch pairs in the power supply parts. I found quite many. They are connected back to back. What surprises me is that their common midpoint constitutes the output voltage, the input of the first switch is connected to the voltage in question (1.05V, 3.3 V etc ) but the output of the second switch is connected to ground! The combination of the two switches is like a T with input voltage, output voltage and ground. None of these where connected to 19 V. The control voltages of the switches are of opposite phase like low and high. This is quite different from what I understood from your videos.Regards Johan
