Watching this a year and a half later and your point-of-failure predictions have all come true. And the five B's (bump-steer, bad bearings, belly bump) are defacto talking points. Even so, I bought the Gen8 PACK and I like it. There are owners who insist that anyone who breaks this truck is abusive, while others report catastrophic damage crawling the kitchen floor. I will say that no one should drive without first putting on a skidplate to protect the servo horn, and the Panhard mount at the axle must be reinforced. The other three brackets will probably rip out too (SSD has a solution). Suffice to say RedCat is close. Maybe the Gen9. Thanks for the walk-thru.
The "Easter egg" inside the receiver box lid reminded me of the original Amiga 1000 computer which has signatures of all the developers on the inside of the top cover. Including the designer's dog Mitchy's paw print.
I was sold on the redcat with the Gen 7 its a very tough truck out of the box and is the only one I haven't had to replace half the parts on so I just had to get the Gen 8 so far the only thing Ive done to it is a new steering horn the one in it is short a longer one gives you about twice as much degree on turn and got a center skid plate just Love these trucks and like Marco I'm going to have to get the AXE have fun out there!
The Left Portal input Gear broke at the CVA First Run Out. Not just mine, another driver on our Crawl broke his right side at the CVA just as mine did. We haven’t even had these trucks under stress on rocks yet. We were doing straight slow climbs on hard packed hill, the truck had great traction very little wheel spin and suddenly was pulling more to the right. I pick up the truck, spun the left front and it was free wheeling.
I’ve owned mine for 2 months now during the quarantine running it hard everyday or every other day. Bearings are definitely a major issue for me. Fast eddy bearings kits are a must when operating the gen8. I’ll probably be getting another (different) truck this winter as I’m happy with the gen 8 but not HAPPY with the gen 8...
I just recently got the v2 version....I tried to find the v1 version because of the orange body...but in the end I got the purple one....I like it more then my original scx10
After watching a few vids on this truck, I think most of the differences between this truck and the Traxxas are just to keep Traxxas from suing Redcat. But mainly I am glad to see a body that isn't another Jeep or Toyota.
Great informational content. The attention to detail is awesome. I have a trx 4 defender and just ordered the old lady an orange gen 8. Im super excited for her to jump on board because i myself am just getting into the scale side of the hobby. Thanks again for a great non biased review.
With the wheelbase being reported as 12.5”+, I’m thinking it might not be too difficult to get a Scout body to mount on a TRX-4 Defender/Tactical 12.8” chassis.
Yeah, you could see the bump steer from the geometry without even articulating the truck. Still think it’s workable though. Looks like a very good first try.
Great honest informative review. I pre ordered one before I watched this, not so sure I would have if I saw this review first. But the price is good and I’m sure upgrades are being made as we speak.
Great unbiased (one way or the other) review! I already have mine. Picked it up from the warehouse. I love it. So far I just think it needs some weight changes. Had trouble crawling steep rocks.
So the question is do you have 300 extra bones laying around that you can spend on a rig that is still in the experimental stage? test run will pretty much Make It or Break it. Will the price go up or will it go down in the future? I'm trying to look at it from a conservative point also a supply-and-demand ordeal.
The portal axles have been vetted. They appear to be the beta portals I have on my Gen 7. So no worries there. The truck seems solid and has a lot of well thought out designs. I will be purchasing one based on my Gen 7 experience. No it's not my only rig, 1 of 14.
I'm not saying portal axles are a bad thing. I'm expecting them to become the norm in crawlers going forward. But I think it's interesting in that it generally flies in the face of going scale as most vehicles in real life don't have them. Guess it's a trade off we're making for performance.
This is very true, they are not scale in most all applications. People seem to overlook that often but I’m very much on your side of the fence when it comes to that. I don’t think they’re right for every application.
Nice video. I think its a well engineered rig for its price. And they are definitely listening to the people for scale features. Im curious to see what the aftermarket support brings.
Very nice review. One area in the portals that I hadn't paid much attention to is the small bearings. Redcat is using rubber sealed bearings, but long term, some of those small bearings could end up being a concern.

@@BOTAJELL Cannot help you on the body. I have never done any RC. I clicked to this site when I saw the Scout picture. I sold these new back in the day. Never did sell a diesel tho. IMHO the Scout was one tough unit. The gas V-345 approx 6.0L had gobs of low end torque. The auto trans was a Chrysler 727 torque flight. I beat the snot out of a couple of these and they just wouldn't die. Used a 4 cyl 196, approx 4L to go whitewater kayaking for several years. Had a posi rear and the close ratio 4 spd. Drop the TC into low and it went anywhere i needed to go. On one trip to the Gauley river in W Va heavy rain washed out the shuttle road while we were on the river. Rafters stuck there, other kayakers stuck there, buses held up. A zoo. Topo map showed remnants of a logging trail going the other direction. Figured WTH and headed off, 6 kayaks on the roof and six people inside. About 5 miles at 2 to 10 mph but we made it. Biggest obstacle was a K5 Blazer that had gotton hung trying to cross a washed out culvert. His angle of approach wasn't steep enough. Neither was angle of departure. He was basically hung up on his frt and rr bumpers. I was able to ooze around and not drop off the right shoulder. Couldn't help him because nobody had any straps or chains. Been anticipating this review and Harley delivered. Having recently picked up the FTX Outback ll Fury it was interesting to see the Redcat in detail. There are many similarities in the basic design and hardware between the two. Same links, drive shafts, servo horn and motor for example. I've not forensically examined the vlog or the rig but its fair to say this shares some DNA and is more than likely manufactured in the same place. My experience of the Outback has been good and I'm guessing the Redcat will deliver comparatively with it and other rtr's and looks mint.
The tire foams will be easy to change due to the beadlocks. I see this being a decent truck, not a true game changer but its a step in the forward direction. Now to get the aftermarket to buy into it. I feel that determines in a truck is good or a flop. Parts and aftermarket.
Redcat has already came out with upgrades for the axle/portal gear issues and for the 2 piece spool/ring gear. I don't recall the video name unfortunately. both are now a one piece design versus the 2 pieces
Mike, they have already made the changes to the gears. I was/am a beta tester for the portal axles, and the new gears are light-years ahead of the original ones.
At least the tires will hold form plus a bead lock. Never understood why the big dogs build a good tire with a almost worthless foam and glue on wheel. Rather the wheels and tires come disassembled.
eric rush I think at this point, it’s almost expected that an owner will swap RTR’s tires and wheels out for a better tire and beadlocks as a first upgrade. Yea a few kits come with decent tires, but there are still many better options out there along with most hobbyists already have many other sets of tires and wheels to swap out.
these swampers are not very good in my opinion especially if they're the same compound as the gen7. That's always the first upgrade I invest in if I don't have an extra set.
They’ll definitely need to get dealers on board with stocking all the new parts, since none of it is reverse compatible. But I think that will happen soon.
I forgot to make mention about that receiver box not being waterproof. Not sure that it has to be, if its the same receiver as in the Gen7 which is pretty good at standing up to water.
Not sure if I should congratulate you on having it already or curse you, I've had four on pre order since Nov 26. Still no expected arrival. And don't give me no ... about having to be a platinum member at AMain.. could cover 10 people for the last two years. So will quit ranting and watch as usual. Maybe you will cover something not previously known I hope and keep me still wanting my orders. Edit: you got the "Like", most in depth review yet, so you get some points there. Definitely brought out some additional information and I hope that my team doesn't start seeing failures too soon before aftermarket parts come available.
That was a great look at a very anticipated Rig, Josh!! Very balanced and complete. Maybe Incision could produce an upper Driveshaft, and a Flat Bottomed Skidplate and TC mount.... 😎😉 And I'm sure someone will come out with a stronger Axle Housing with larger Bearing Bosses. With an open mind, there's lots of potential Aftermarket Parts that can be made available!! I predicted earlier, this may have a minor flaw or two, but it's about to change the Landscape!! Carmine 💥 ⛽
Portals rock, sadly redcat didn’t learn from GMade, only failures on their portals were the teeny tiny bearings. I haven’t heard of Traxxas bearings failing though
From the beta testing on the portals that many many people tried. The bearing were never an issue. The weak gear was found to be the issue and it was replaced with a beefier one piece for the new ones
With the weak gears they were using the stress may not have been moved down the system. This weak bearing will need to be upgraded to hold power. If someone only uses stock-ish brushed power then it will live for longer of course.
Hey Josh, Great video as usual. Doesn't look like Gen8 portholes are even up there with the Trx4 quality, and I sure would have liked to see metal trans & transfer gears. But that's expected @ $300. Think I'm going to wait and see who jumps on board w/aftermarket parts. Have a great year, you're off to a great start. 😎🇺🇸☝️
quality sure isn't there with traxxas or the aftermarket support. I'd spend the extra 60 bucks and go with the trx sport over this especially after hearing about the bumpsteer issue
Thank you Josh for a great update and breakdown of the rig. I only seen a box of one in AZ 3 days ago and they didn’t have one open to do a good looking at. Yes please run it in stock form at first. 👍🏼👍🏼
😁👍 That was a awesome showcasing of the truck!! You scared me I have one on order and now wondering if I should just cancel it, I am with you that center case lump on the bottom hanging down is not to good and I think they did it just to lower the COG for the battery tray? and also those tiny bearings kind of wimpy... I have the gen 7 sport it's bottom is smooth but the axles hang low and get hung up and redcat now makes the axles up high and the center gear box hang down low to get stuck on the new gen 8? my gen 7 now after moding and tweaking it can keep up with most rigs my trx 4 sport is better though but I could kind of keep up with it. Thanks for the great showing of the gen 8!
@@BudgetRC_Channel I am sure if somebody makes a smooth bottom mount that raises the center gear box you can probably use a smaller battery and relocate it if you want to. somebody will make it I am pretty sure.
Having the protrusion from the skid is a huge issue and is not something that can be overlooked. The battery may have to move but the skid has to be fixed.
@@HarleyDesignsInc Yes I have a few trucks even toy grade I tested and when they have that little lump hanging down like the gen 8 has on the bottom from the center gearbox they get hung up on it and the truck starts swaying and rocking back and forth left and right on it on the rocks and then breaks free. Unlike a smooth bottom that glides right over the objects.
It's a very personal thing but for someone who's looking for a first crawler an SCX10ii or a TRX4 is a better option. The cheapest versions of those are only $30 more. For someone who already owns an SCX10ii or a TRX4, the Gen8 doesn't of much else and a leafsprung truck or something on smaller tires (Trailfinder2 is the obvious option here) would be a more interesting option. But this truck will probably sell well. Saving a few bucks and getting some minor problems in trade doesn't bother most, if it did everyone would be driving a VS4-10.
Nice review. I have time on the same portal axle setup (Gen 7 w/beta portals) and it has held up fine. I have had no issues with them. So I don't for see any problems soon. So many of the statements were "what ifs", or "could be" statements. Didn't mean the design was bad or wrong, just insight to be mindful of maintenance on your rig. As for the bulge, that is a Dad Bod..... So don't knock it.. LOL. Actually that does stink to see that. At $300 this rig gives you a great place to start. Can't count how many folks buy an almost $500 TRX4 to strip it down of almost everything on the rig to replace it with comp series components. What a waste of money paying $200 more for a spot to say you own a Traxxass. I think in a real "non-biased" test, people would be surprised. Ordering mine soon. I need a 15th rig....
Trying to say that bulge is acceptable is ridiculous. There are trucks with this same portal design with a lower COG and NO BULGE. That aspect was a poor design choice. The designers are inexperienced in this market, I would bet huge money they don’t make that mistake on the next one.
As someone who has been in the crawling world for over a decade the biggest fail here is in the marketing. This is not a upgraded gen 7 with a cool body. It's a new truck and should have got a new name to get away from the bad thoughts of the gen 7. Could have been the new Redcat "Super Scout" Thanks for the good breakdown of the good and bad stuff.
Quite ironic after Redcat released a video about finding their own path and starting a bright new future. I figured their truck would be a rip off of another one, but this is very obvious. I would not be surprised if Traxxas takes them to court.
Thanks for the detailed review. I like the body but want one I can paint and I'm not sure about the rest of the Chassis. I've already seen it on the trail last Tuesday and I'm not very impressed with the performance. I will have to see how much upgradeable parts will help the performance before I consider getting one. I guess only time will tell for me. Thanks again. Have a great New Year.
Ikr 👊he s does a good review , i can see that bearing giving me a problem in the future and now ik , my 1st crawler i even made fun crawlers when i was younger now i see how cool they are .
You can find them used on Ebay, or look on facebook market place , 180$ used , 200-250 new. I love the gen 7 too btw it's an amazing truck , have friends with axials , traxxas , vattera etc and theres no where they go I cant
Not that interested any more after seeing all the inside of the axle and transmission. Thx josh you saved me some money and i will throw this safed money into a black series Vs4 😊
Great review. The Gen8 is miles ahead of the 7, but that's largely due to Redcat's blatant rip-off of the TRX-4. They should not be proud of themselves. The only innovation here is that they separated the transmission and transfer case, but they screwed that up with "the bulge". The velcro body attachment is slick at first, but run that thing through the mud a few times and take the body on/off a few times and it won't be very well attached anymore. The Sport is a better buy, even with the ugly body.
Crawl Hard rc I agree, especially considering my LHS sells the sport for the same price as this Redcat. Now seeing the guts of this truck spilled it’s nowhere near as well built as the TRX-4 in my opinion.
We've definitely got the same view on the fender design, the fronts should have just been made to more closely mimic the rears. I noticed they snuck a little Redcat logo right where I'd Dremel it away to make it look better. That being said, great review, decent budget rig, but glad I just (yesterday, in fact!) added a TRX-4 Defender to my stable... Keep the rubber side down!
I guess we learn Something new-about this guy doesn’t know much about engineering why the bump is there terrific truck i’ll be buying one Soon there is no such thing as perfect
Ok, I just have to ask, what are MOD1 gears? I have seen these types of gears mentioned in several model videos. What does MOD1 mean in relation to "regular " gears? I am also sure that I have even heard mention of MOD2 gears.
That is a "Metric" pitch value. MOD1 or MODULE 1 gears have bigger teeths than 32 pitch gears, which are similar to 0,8 MOD and 48p gears are similar to 0,6 MOD gears. The biggest i've seen in a RC was MOD 1.5 gears.
This truck has changed my outlook on REDCAT

Ron Underwood thank you Sir 💥🤝💥👊💥👍💥was great talking to you ! This is good gear ⚙️ head talk and I’m all about that ! Most new generation don’t know how to speak gear ⚙️ or engine talk anymore only computer crap or electronics lol 😂 happy new year to you God Bless!
Very informative video. You mentioned "aftermarket" and "upgrades" so many times, it makes me wonder if the Gen8 is at all reliable. Time will tell.
I don't recall the video name unfortunately. both are now a one piece design versus the 2 pieces
ruclips.net/video/Ab5WvhHubSc/видео.html found the video concerning preproduction versus production about the portals
No, this is exactly how they are coming. These are the updated parts.
Mike, they have already made the changes to the gears. I was/am a beta tester for the portal axles, and the new gears are light-years ahead of the original ones.
@@puzzleluvr I noticed that in his newest video. just misunderstood him on this one. thx
@@mikej8832 no prob, just wanted to make sure you had correct info. 😉
I get it and the shocks are leaking slowly and i dont no how to fix them
What's your opinion on parts availability? Great video. Thanks.
They’ll definitely need to get dealers on board with stocking all the new parts, since none of it is reverse compatible. But I think that will happen soon.
Thanks.
Redcat sent him that for free so that he could review it. It's good cheap advertising for them.
Dealers have not gotten delivery as of yet, just those that do the reviews and partners that helped bring the Gen 8 to life...
@@TVsGringoStarr wasn't quite sure, he did say a couple weeks back that he ordered one.
I did preorder one, and then Redcat contacted be and sent a media version. So the one I bought hasn’t shipped yet.
That was a great look at a very anticipated Rig, Josh!! Very balanced and complete.
Maybe Incision could produce an upper Driveshaft, and a Flat Bottomed Skidplate and TC mount.... 😎😉
And I'm sure someone will come out with a stronger Axle Housing with larger Bearing Bosses. With an open mind, there's lots of potential Aftermarket Parts that can be made available!!
I predicted earlier, this may have a minor flaw or two, but it's about to change the Landscape!!
Carmine 💥 ⛽
Is this better than the axial scx 2 jeep cherokee rtr
I can see you putting Vanquish portals on this rig! Nice descriptive video! Keep up the good work!
The bump under the chassis allows for a lower overall CG. Raising it will compromise the performance.
No, the bump should have never happened. Plenty of designers have found ways to keep the belly flat and the CG low. This was a mistake.
Nice review. You covered it all. Think it will be a great rig for the price. Every rig has downfalls and dont seem to be that bad on this.
I've always been an axial person but the gen 8 might be the first one from redcat that I'll buy but not before an trx4 sport
Going to keep to bronco body
I just took the foams out of my tires on my Redcat Racing Gen 8 I noticed that the tire's are sponge will that burn up my motor and servo
You should definitely be running a proper foam in the tires. The stock memory foams are terrible but you should definitely be running something.
@@HarleyDesignsInc Will my truck be alright without the foams in the tires I am still running the stock tires and foams
You should just put the stock foams back in.
@@HarleyDesignsInc Ok I will do that
Detailed and well done..as usual. Thanks for the review.
Nice breakdown of the truck! Well done!
Another informative review in the can. Great job Josh🤙🏼
Portals rock, sadly redcat didn’t learn from GMade, only failures on their portals were the teeny tiny bearings. I haven’t heard of Traxxas bearings failing though
Portals are cool but always have their own disadvantages as well. We’ll see how these do over time.
Hey Josh,
Great video as usual. Doesn't look like Gen8 portholes are even up there with the Trx4 quality, and I sure would have liked to see metal
trans & transfer gears.
Great video my friend!👍
The receiver is waterproof so you don’t need to silicone the receiver box.
Wonder how hard Traxxas axles would be to install on this rig, the bearings in those portal boxes seem strong enough.
The truck looks good but I don't think it would hold up to a major drop or rolling over on some of the hard courses 🤔
I have the Gen 7 and it gets beat on. This rig will be fine.
Well done video! Thanks for details!!
I bet there was a huge amount of buyer's remorse for Gen8 owners when the TRX-4 Sport was released.
Which dual stage foams do you prefer?
Crawler Innovations Lil Novas
really liked your review, not sure about the truck, like to see it against box-stock '79 bronco trx-4
That comparison doesn't make much sense. That truck is 50% more expensive.
Raising that transfer case will require raising the battery, and that will be bad for CoG. It's all a trade off.
God this video was so informational man thank you brother !!!🙏🏽🙏🏽
This or the Traxxas Bronco for the first crawler?
Great review look forward to seeing the other videos
No one ever says what no,da of batteries I can use with it. What is the minimun C rating on Lipos for it?
C rating and capacity are a function of the output. Even a 20c 5000mah pack would do fine.
It was recommended to use a 2s lipo right out of the box.
A 5000 mAh 20C should be plenty for the stock setup.
As someone who has been in the crawling world for over a decade the biggest fail here is in the marketing. This is not a upgraded gen 7 with a cool body. It's a new truck and should have got a new name to get away from the bad thoughts of the gen 7.
Could have been the new Redcat "Super Scout"
Thanks for the good breakdown of the good and bad stuff.
Nice review, love that Orange color ❗😃
The inside of the Redcat gen 8 looks just like the trx4 inside
Quite ironic after Redcat released a video about finding their own path and starting a bright new future.
I figured their truck would be a rip off of another one, but this is very obvious. I would not be surprised if Traxxas takes them to court.
🤣
Thanks for the detailed review. I like the body but want one I can paint and I'm not sure about the rest of the Chassis. I've already seen it on the trail last Tuesday and I'm not very impressed with the performance. I will have to see how much upgradeable parts will help the performance before I consider getting one. I guess only time will tell for me. Thanks again. Have a great New Year.
Just ordered one ☝️
The fender wells have the same shape as the 1:1 scouts. I see nothing wrong with the front.
Ikr 👊he s does a good review , i can see that bearing giving me a problem in the future and now ik , my 1st crawler i even made fun crawlers when i was younger now i see how cool they are .
I was going dremel wheel well but i thought they w e re lile that on 1:1
Cool video!!
Now, who's waiting for Gen 7 to go on clearance?
You can find them used on Ebay, or look on facebook market place , 180$ used , 200-250 new. I love the gen 7 too btw it's an amazing truck , have friends with axials , traxxas , vattera etc and theres no where they go I cant
great video. where can i get one?
Thank you sir. Always the best work
Well all I'm hearing is failure points..I had some hype going in, but I'll take a pass. Gen 9 should be nice tho. Earned a sub for honesty
great info josh, thanks.
So this for 300 of traxxas trx4 for 350?? Im getting one now which one
TRX I would say.
Not that interested any more after seeing all the inside of the axle and transmission. Thx josh you saved me some money and i will throw this safed money into a black series Vs4 😊
🤣
Great review. The Gen8 is miles ahead of the 7, but that's largely due to Redcat's blatant rip-off of the TRX-4. They should not be proud of themselves.
The only innovation here is that they separated the transmission and transfer case, but they screwed that up with "the bulge".
The velcro body attachment is slick at first, but run that thing through the mud a few times and take the body on/off a few times and it won't be very well attached anymore.
The Sport is a better buy, even with the ugly body.
That is not a bulge, that is a Dad Bod...
That scout in the intro what is it????
sweet truck going to get one
Well do you like this Gen8?
Need more time to form a full opinion. I just tried to give all the info I could for you to form your own opinion.
the answer is no because i just bought a scx10ii and spent a whole bunch of money on mods and dont have any money now lol :)
Usefully informative. Thank you.
Nice job! 👍👍
Didn't like the review . . . I loved it! Great, thorough information. Happy New Year Josh.
hats off to redcat but I think the trx4 sport is still a better option
Crawl Hard rc I agree, especially considering my LHS sells the sport for the same price as this Redcat. Now seeing the guts of this truck spilled it’s nowhere near as well built as the TRX-4 in my opinion.
can't beleive your Lhs sells the sport for the same price. that's awesome
Crawl Hard rc my LHS has the best prices I’ve found for Traxxas vehicles. Parts and accessories are average price though.
Redcat is doing stuff none else is
Great review 👍🏾
I guess we learn Something new-about this guy doesn’t know much about engineering why the bump is there terrific truck i’ll be buying one Soon there is no such thing as perfect
I’m well aware of the engineering, the bump could have been fixed with a different gear design and not have such pronounced feature.
Ok, I just have to ask, what are MOD1 gears? I have seen these types of gears mentioned in several model videos. What does MOD1 mean in relation to "regular " gears? I am also sure that I have even heard mention of MOD2 gears.
Mod 1 describes the pitch of the teeth aka the depth of the gear. Axial started with 48p then moved to 32p. Mod 1 is deeper than 48p
