John - thank you for your dedication to the hobby. Having recently watched this video, I decided to purchase a Crawl Master Expert (13T) from Amain for my Redcat Everest-10. The Crawl master was more money than I intended to spend, but I wanted to support a small businessperson who is out there sharing his passion. Keep up the good fight, and know that people appreciate your time and effort!
Wow John I just bought a CrawlMaster Pro 550 12T Motor for my redcat racing scout ii gen 8 and added the same speed control you ran . I am so impressed with this motor why is it so much better than the 550 that came with the scout ii. The torque is unreal on this setup now
Revisiting this as I"m getting ready to pull the 550 out of my Gen8. Owning it for a month or so, I have to say I agree with your findings as well. Very predictable, capable rig...What a pleasure to drive. I am always surprised at what it manages to get through. I and the people I'm with usually make a comment like "welp, that was fun but I think the hand of God is going to be needed aaaaannnnd - voila, like magic it finds a line and makes it happen.
Watching you crawl and listening to your dialog is like watching Bob Ross, it's enjoyable and relaxing with humor lol. You got me yearning to crawl so I'm charging my 0 cell lipo as we speak, never takes long, must be my super duper $1000 charger 😉. Always a pleasure, take care!
Hi John, I have had two of the gen 8s sold the first one after a year or so bought another one Gen 8 again brass end to end it out to the max also had Treal heavy bead lock wheels and JC Concepts-Rupture tires , my question since I have 10 crawlers, and have your 2300 fusion in my Defender smooth as silk! Don't want to stick any more money in this rig I have my own small 10 obstacle course, speed is not what we do, is a different pinon the only way I can slow it down with getting new motor, great video as always, I wish I knew what you forgot about crawlers LOL Thanks Ike
wish I had seen this sooner, that being said instead of buying the fms 18th anniversary truck they brought out... I ordered the brushless esc and motor from it and plan on putting it in my little fcx24. I guess I will find out how that works. very interesting video.
Just got my first crawler yesterday, redcat axe edition gen 8. I'm stoked it's a beast but I've heard GREAT things about all your products I can wait to try out one of those crawl masters I'm gonna get another gen8 like the one in this video and use the same motor for my son.
I’ve not watched this yet, and you may ask why I’m posting before watching. Well I will tell you. I’m as thick as a thick thing. 60 year old and trying to find an hobby that I can still do. I struggle with that because I’m now disabled. I used to be hands on and very physical. So here I am with a brand new one of these trucks and I have zero knowledge of them. This gentleman here has more knowledge in a burp than I possess. So, I will watch it but I don’t think it’s going to sink in xx
so I have decided the big draw for me is the mechanical side of these things... I loved working on my own cars and really cant do it anymore. But I can on these little RC's.
I'm sitting here thinking...what's with the long screwdriver?...love the jokes. keep it up. i just picked up a gen8 as my first crawler and was trying to figure out wth was going on with the throttle control. This video is perfectly timed.
I’m super impressed with my Gen8 v2 in stock form. I think I might have to spring for one of your motors in the near future. I’ve gotten used to the esc, my son is more of a power through it vs slow climb , but we were all that way at 11 right 🤣
Great info as always John! When you take the big ass screw-driver to the Gen8, they're killer. I run a BLE Pro in mine paired with a Puller Pro 2200KV. The weak point in the rig is the input gear in the TC. Move to the CNC gears if going more beef than what you have there, which is very close to what I ran before except with a WP1080. Had no breakage before the brushless. Got some portal gears in the pit box in case though and the slipper set juuuussstt right. So far, so good!
Let me tell you all something, this motor makes a HUGE difference in the performance of this truck. I had the opportunity to take it out for about an hour Memorial Day evening. Did some basic trail riding/crawling. The low end control and wide torque band is amazing. I DID put my hacked Flysky GT3B radio back on the truck. The stock radio has a lot of issues with throttle control. I believe the pot for the trigger is pretty notchy. Simply adding an aftermarket radio to the stock electronics makes a big difference. Adding this motor into the mix is leaps and bounds better than stock. And it's sewing machine quiet. My friend was running his stock Gen 8 along with me. The difference in sound between the two dramatic.
John Holmes should be nominated for the Guinness book of world records. The screwdriver tip starts in the workshop And finishes with someone holding the other end in australia🇦🇺👍😂
Awesome video the gen 8 is gr8t. Have you tried taking out foam completely and sealing the breather holes in the wheels with something like E6000 and then put tire back on wheel without the foam. You will see a huge difference in less struggle for hook up for traction. Try it and see the change is REAL.
I Have one of their 1/5 scale clawback crawlers it has dual 550 kg and is severely under powered I would love to get a new set of motors for it not really any faster speed but definitely more power would love to see you guys do an upgrade video on one of these so I could follow along and I know there are a lot of people that only days they would love to upgrade them as well
When driving a "holmes" you do not need a big johnson t-shirt :) Seriously. I do not want to bash a big name brand, but I can say all my future rigs will run Holmes. One Question: Do you make a hand wound waterproof (resistant) Neodymium motor?
Man I'd love to go crawl with you one day and just learn some stuff. Since I started watching your videos I plan on going Holmes with my electronics. Thanks for all the help with selecting those electronics man.
Hi John you are the electronics guru enjoy your tutorials and build videos lol in my pinion 😆 gee who builds the crawlmaster I wonder I got a Gen 8 about 6 weeks ago I love it that and my scx10ii 69' blazer are my go to trial and crawl rigs my bomber well is for desert bashing it has a tekin 3150 brushless system now it's crazy fast and has low end for some crawling that Harley Designs guy helped me with upgrades 😉 I'll buy a crawlmaster system from you in a few months for my gen 8 😎👍
I put a Traxxas Titan 21 turn on mine. Just because i get them for $10. The titan 21 turn is way better for low speed control than the 17 turn it came with. Much smoother. I'm wanting to get a CrawlMaster to go in it.
Hey John I'm a new subscriber love watching your Channel. I got a gen 8 V2 I love the truck I really wish I could afford a motor swap right now. I would like to at least go with what you're doing to this truck on the motor. Soon as I had the money I am going to try to get some of the stuff you have I see your videos and I know you have great products. when I get one I will install it on my little RUclips channel. Thanks for all the good content and great products
Its a nice body style adding a HH motor is a great move...I sent in a Revolver to be looked at about 4 or 5 month's old please email or call to tell me what's up thanks … Love my HH stuff and Castle ...building a Sport put in A HH 2700 stubby and CC Mamba X micro can"t wait to get it on the trail...
New subscription here. Just got into the 1/10 scale crawling hobby with a gen8 V2. Bought a crawl master expert 20t, but I'm wondering if I should have gone with a 550 can instead...? Do 550 cans produce more torque or better slow speed? I'm looking to do more crawling than trailing. Also not sure about what gearing would be ideal for my new crawl master expert motor. Any advice would be appreciated!
I'm considering buying this motor or maybe the 12t. Looking for something with more torque then Stock and similar speed don't want to go slower. And wanting better low speed control.
I run my rigs on your crawl master pro motors be it the 550 or the 540 motors they work really well with the hobby wing 1080escs only put these motors and escs in my crawlers rigs
Love my puller 400 13t way more than I liked the 2700 stubby. Just orderd a crawlmaster and I'm super excited to try it. I have a question, how do you know if you should switch polarity on the motor or switch the throttle reverse on your raido? Let's say timing on the can is zero. Thanks John
just installed your trail mastersport 21t in my 2017 jeep rubicon wrangler and used it over the memorial weekend up at my daughters and husbands land in northern minnesota ; it ran great andafter watching your videos which you recommended that motor. will be installing a hobbywing 1080 esc here soon. Also looking to upgrade the axles front and rear.
i run a crawlmaster 540 paired with a hobbywing 1080 on 3s in my tf2. have the transmission locked into the high speed gear and it crawls lie ka dream, lots of low end control but wheel speed when i want!
great video would love to see a comparison between that motor and the torque master pro 550. I have been trying to decide between the two for my gen 8 I'm not sure which would be best been a newbie to the crawling world also love the screwdriver have some of my own
The Crawlmaster is more smooth on the throttle while the Torquemaster is more punchy and less smooth but a little more power. Torquemaster is for heavier rigs
I am in the market for a new esc motor combo. I still am unsure where to go. I want that super smooth low speed control. Just so many options out there. Yet an other option in this video. ughh.
I started with the 550 21t sport and 16t pinion on my gen 8 it ran great barely got warm. Upgraded transfer case to deadloc contender overdrive unit and lost a fair bit of gear down, but love how it performs. i did also upgrade driveshafts to mip and swapped links to stainless, so this added rotational mass and weight, I went down to to a 10t pinion and changed to 27t 550 sport, but motor still runs pretty warm just trailing even with overdrive disengaged. I would rather not lose any more wheelspeed, so my next powerplant will be the new revolver motor and sw4 esc. Any other suggestions or is this a good plan? Thanks and love your products.
All u had to do is upgrade the transmitter and reciver they dont come with very great ones i had the same issue with mine after i upgraded to a reciver and transmitter from a trx4 it was much easyer to slowly easy into motion
I have recently purchased one of your 1800kv waterproof censored motors for my trx4. What is the best, most cost effective esc that you would recommend for it? I have a sidewinder3 on hand. If course it's not sensored. Slow speed control is a must.
Hi, you never try to control the esc by arduino in order to control the speed and the torque? We can do with encoder directly connected un the motor. I’m try to study the code on arduino...

Whoa! you are a much better driver than me! lol. I have the same rig with the stock set up. Will your trail master sport 550 21T fit in the gen 8? Im buying my son the everest 10 for his birthday in the next two weeks and I thought about buying two Trailmaster Sport 550 21T one for me and one for him. It will be a little more wheel speed than he needs but he is going to be 5 and likes to crawl and play monster trucks! We are @rc_amigos on IG. thanks for the great vid!
I would seriously consider the Traxxas Bigfoot for him... it’s $200 or less, does 30 on 3s, almost indestructible and you can limit the power / speed to 50% since he’s so young. Once he gets the hang of it you can hit the full power button on the Esc. Get 1.9 tires and it’s very hard to flip, the stock balloon tires make jumps a ton of fun though!! Just my 2 cents..
Can someone help me understand what he’s talking about with the startup control and phase amps being too high and the motor running away when the obstacle is cleared? All I know is this is what I want to avoid, but I don’t get what causes it, can someone explain this to me?

One day I will have to try one of those nice 550 motors, the Trailmaster ones I run now do great though, even the 12t.
Beautiful crawl! The stability of that rig is impressive.
I've been running the crawl master 550 17t in my stock Gen 7, for a few years now an I love it 😎👍
Nice 👍

We need a John Holmes longest screwdriver you can find T shirt
Just picked up a gen 8 scout last week. Loving this rig so far for the price

Great video, Enjoying my 550 brushed 27t on 3S. Recommend for GEN8, gotcha bro!
Me too! Well 27t on a Gen7... like the top speed and at $20 each I go thru mud snow the beach etc...

I'm runnin a 1080 esc and a hh21 t trailmaster sport with gens ace 1800 3 cell
Interesting review, but will be more impressive if you could compare the model on the same obstacles before and after the upgrade.
I try to hit the same lines in most vids. The gen8 isn't mine to keep though, it's already gone back to the owner.

Yeah, that's a good question
Why don't you sell that tray John? I'm sure Gen 8 owners would buy some
Hey nice video man. hey when y'all gonna have some more revolvers in stock ?

I tried many different motor speeds but I find I like the stock motor best with a 12 tooth pinion and a hobbywing 1080
Thanks that was fun:)
Cool gen 8 video brotha
actually in missouri we are only required to have one rear view mirror.
All u had to do is upgrade the transmitter and reciver they dont come with very great ones i had the same issue with mine after i upgraded to a reciver and transmitter from a trx4 it was much easyer to slowly easy into motion
This must be a special screw driver, just for brush motors 😄😄😄
this video taught me a lot. thanks.
Maybe 1vr after the fact but l got it... off the wall enough to catch a laugh on a bad day...my Pinon it helped...
What motor would be recommend for a 1.9 scale rig around 10-11 lbs?
at that weight, a TorqueMaster Pro might be handy, but if you can fit a 550 you could choose about anything from the catalogue
I have recently purchased one of your 1800kv waterproof censored motors for my trx4. What is the best, most cost effective esc that you would recommend for it? I have a sidewinder3 on hand. If course it's not sensored. Slow speed control is a must.
sidewinder 4 by a long way
I believe stock ESC on scout ii is a 1040 🤔
How do you get better turning on the gen 8
Once I went Crawlmaster Pro I haven't gone back. lol Now, I guess it's going to be Crawlmaster Magnum. Ha!
Which is the best motor to run on mud and water ?
For the new motor can i use the stock esc?
Hi, you never try to control the esc by arduino in order to control the speed and the torque? We can do with encoder directly connected un the motor.
I’m try to study the code on arduino...
So is it a forwards or reverse rotation motor?
Man your videos are always so informative . Thanks for educating us idiots.....😁
I have a question. I have a xl5hv with a trailmaster 27t and can’t get reverse to work. I’ve got a xl5 and it works just fine when throttle swapped.
Yo Holmes!
What kind of motor do you recommend for a heavy scx10?
Would I be able to run a crawlmaster pro 550, 10t with a hobby wing 1080 esc together on my gen 8
Lol love the rc humor!!
Hahaha easy peasy, lemon squeezy. I still say that to this day.
Can you go from a 390 to a 550
How would removing the slipper pads and spring for a locked system work out?
Locking the slipper clutch out is fine as long as your not going fast and slamming the brakes constantly. The slipper just relieves the stress off drive train parts from high speed momentum.
Modificated?
get rid of that stock pinion please
Whoa! you are a much better driver than me!
Yes it will! I have it in my Gen7, Traxxas Bronco and Carisma Coyote... amazing motors , especially for $20!!
Just my 2 cents..
hey, i was wondering how you made the belly of your gen 8 flat? any help is appreciated! thanks
3d printed skid from the net
@3:16 I'm sorry..why the length?
If I buy out your neighbor with the noisy dog can I get some motor discounts LOL
HE-MAN!
What's a motor like that hand wound crawl master going for?
One Ben Frank
3D printed seats under a body with blacked out windows? What's the point?
Can someone help me understand what he’s talking about with the startup control and phase amps being too high and the motor running away when the obstacle is cleared? All I know is this is what I want to avoid, but I don’t get what causes it, can someone explain this to me?
Get as much gear down as possible, that's the best 2 way to make the throttle feel good.
I know a guy that builds 'em also. Do I get a good deal?
Will the crawlmaster pro 550 10t fit in the element enduro sendero? Sorry for the newbie question.
should be no problem, lots of room
HolmesHobbies Thank you!
I'm not understanding how a 27t and a 10t can have the same rpm speed??????
3 slot vs 5 slot. different armature types. Also longer motors are slower for the same turns
@@HolmesHobbies The Holmes motors I've seen only have a bearing on the bell and a crappy bushing on the can...are they all like this???
55t on 3s
Had no idea " modificated" was even a word. Modified for sure but....
had me at the dad jokes.... those 5 thumbs downs are the 5 out of 4 people who admit their bad at fractions.
Is that a calculator watch he is wearing?
remove your rear bumper and it will get through there. i love my gen 8
for the price cant beat it.
Modificated ahahah
