I love your videos John! Just ordered a TRX4 Sport as Birthday present to myself (38 today!). Cant say enough about your knowledge and contributions to the RC community! Thanks for the great videos and I cant wait to pick up a sweet motor from you in the near future! God bless from Texas!!
I swapped my trx4 to a single speed sport trans, 9t pinion and 8t crawlmaster and it is awesome. Smooth low end, but faster than stock motor. Highly recommend these. I will be using nothing but Holmes hobbies for all of my electronic needs.
@little harold keep in mind, the sport comes with a 39t spur and 17t pinion (36:1 final drive ratio). The smallest pinion that fits is a 15t (41:1 FDR), unless you get a 45t spur. Then you can use anywhere from 16t-9t pinion. 16t/49t = 44:1 FDR. 9t/45t = 79:1 FDR. Me personally, I would try a 15t pinion on the 39t spur, and if you feel it’s too fast, or not controllable enough on the low end, switch to the 45t spur and go from there. Pinions are cheap, so it’s nice to experiment with.
@little harold for sure, definitely explore the different settings on the 1080, (I believe you have one anyway) you might be surprised how well the 5 slot can crawl on the low end while maintaining good wheel speed. Particularly when compared to the stock motor. Enjoy the new setup!
I recently upgraded my TRX4 Defender to a Holmes hobbies Crawlmaster 550 12T paired with Hobbywing 1080 and its amazing very smooth low end, huge amount of torque and also very good wheel speed. Very happy with the Upgrade. Thanks John for producing some amazing as well as very affordable electronics.
I just installed this motor in my trx4 on Monday. Running it on 3s on stock esc. Great low end control and loving the wheel speed. The best of both worlds for only $20. Time to upgrade the stock esc. Thanks for making these dope motors.
Love watching your channel from Australia. I just bought my self... ah cough... my 11 yo son a TRX-4 Sport kit to build. I'm waiting excitedly... did it again... he's waiting excitedly for the Crawl Master Magnum 540 11t and HW 1080 esc to arrive form HK. Not sure what pinion gear to whack on there with the 3s. Can't wait to play with my new toys. It's a shame you don't sell your products in Aus. Bought my Revolver from you guys for my Enduro kit... gotta love that whistle. Keep up the great channel, keep safe and well in these crazy times.
I just upgraded my TRX4 to a sealed brushless 1800kv Hobbywing 2in1, Holmes Brushless 12V Servo and running 3s lipo with an 8 tooth pinion gear. Amazing control and no stall crawling.
I have Traxx so I need the turning power, I also upgraded to brass portal housings, kept the plastic portal cover for now, and yeah racing axles with plastic dif covers.
Thanks John absolutely love your products I run the crawl Master sport 12t in my trx4 sport everybody thinks it's the smoothest system even out of all the hobbywing axes in our group my buddy just put the 8t turn in his Enduro and is it loving it
Have you used second gear much and if so in what ways? Just wondering how the 8-10,t holds up when bashing around and hill climbing lose dirt in second or if it should be highly avoided
@@shaneclipse97 I've had good luck with it so far. I did a bunch of hooning around with it. Donuts, jumps, wheelies, etc. Went through most of a 3s 4000 pack that way and my motor still wasn't too hot (didn't get a temp reading). I have no concerns with it holding up well.
Picking one of these up for a Wraith 1.9 project I have. Making it a rock racer/go fast hiking rig, but still be able to do a bit of crawling along the trail. Has portals for clearance, so currently geared close to a stock Sport. Good stuff my friend 👊👍🍻
I'm running a revolver 2200kv on 3s in mine. I absolutely love it! underdrive rear axle, bowhouse low cg battery tray running a shorty 4300 gensace 11.4v, hot racing brass front portal covers, and the thing absolutely performs as well or better than my stupid expensive vanquish ultra.
Put a puller pro 2200kv in my trx4. It's a V1, and the only thing I would like more off, you addressed with the V2, and that's the drag brake. It is a fairly heavy truck though, so it's to be expected. Thanks for all the great stuff.
@little harold I did. It is the 17T pinion that came with the kit. My ESC is a Hobby Wing QuickRun 1080. The Holmes Hobbies 12T Crawlmaster Sport is the 550 can. Fun crawler.
I've got one of your unicorn motors(Devolver) on a 9 tooth with under drive gears, cant wait for my next motor from ya once it's back in stock, and have one of you PP stubby 3300 in my bomber 2.0

Do I have to give this type of driving up for gods w an 8t? Not crawling in second g we but you know using second with a good run up and trying to make it up dirt hills but of the time ufl can't find traction and a line w in say 15 seconds I back out and re align my run up and ry again(truck normally flips first anyway. we are a bit behind in emails, but we will take care of it. If you are runnning 3s I would recommend gearing down, its a very fast motor that is capable of being stalled out on 3s.

Which of the crawlmaster sport motors would be as near to the titan 21t using the standard trx4 sport gearing. Im more than happy with the speed already, im just wanting a little more smoothness on the slow crawls.
Hi! I just got the trx4 2021 bronco and am interested in a one of your motors. Which would you suggest for crawling that has a bit more drag brake and torque than the titan 21t ? Tia.
Which motor turn do you recommend for best overall performance between speed and torque? I’ll be building a trx kit soon and am stuck on which motor turn would be best for the single speed trans
I'm running the devolver with a sw4 on 3s.but I'm fixin to swap out with my comp rig that's got a 12 turn sport with a 1080.the devolver setup in my trx4 goes through batteries to fast for a trail rig.
I am getting a TRX4 builders kit. Already have a better steering servo to put in and I want to add a crawlmaster sport 550. Would you suggest 13t or 8t? I will be running a 3s lipo and the stock traxxas esc (for now, will upgrade to a hw 1080) also does the sport crawlmaster come with the leads I need to solder or do I have to get some seperately?
Was just wondering I have a very heavy 6th scale rig using the twin titan motors and gearbox from a Traxxas Emaxx for power what motor would you recomend as a replacement?
I have this in my trx4 sport and when I let off the drag brake doesn’t work like it should . Could the motor wires not being soldered corrrectly cause this ? The throttle is reversed on remote , and I have to have the forward down
The stock gearing is 17T Pinion / 39T Spur gear. If running 3S and if I went to a 10T Crawlmaster Sport to get more wheel speed and smoother startup what motor pinion would you go to in order to preserve the drag brake and climbing power I’m getting from my Trailmaster Sport 550 27T? Maybe drop to a 15T pinion?
Out of curiosity, which 550 Crawlmaster Sport would you consider for a 3S powered SCX10II (15T/60T gear setup - can be changed obviously). It's a trail truck, one I'm leaning towards keeping it as performance oriented as possible rather then scale. Was thinking about a 15T motor, but starting to think maybe I should go a little lower. Actually, maybe a 540 might be better given it's a little smaller which might (?) keep the weight down (though I don't want to compromise on power or torque).
@@HolmesHobbies Okay, sold - I'll set a watch up. Hmm, well I still have the stock pinion (13T) and spur (56T) in my box O'Spares... Don't think I want to down size the spur back to stock, but the 13T pinion with 60T spur I hope will suffice for gear down. Or you think that would that be a little too much reduction?
Forgive my ignorance: bought a couple of these motors and need to know which terminal is positive and which negative? I see one has a “red” led beside it and the other no. Help please.
I was wondering what you’d recommend for a SCX10.3. I was planning on the v2 puller pro stubby, but they’re sold out. Your team is amazing and is checking warehouse inventory for me, but if I can’t get one. What route would you suggest? I’m planning on getting a mama x micro esc to go along with whichever motor I go with
Is better to reverse the wires on the motor or reverse the transmitter? I have the torque master expert 21T. With a futaba T3pv. I told that futaba transmitters need to be reversed. It seems a little quicker this this way or maybe I’m just tripping.
My stock vxl5hv ESC has recently died on me. I was thinking about going with a hobbywing 1080 esc, this trailmaster motor and the 10t pinion since I run mine on 3s. Seem like a reasonable combo to you?
The stock motor on 3S is really quite good. I upgraded to the crawlmaster sport 550 12T. Most everyone in my town has done the same. A Little more power and drag break without breaking the bank.
So I did the exact same setup as you just did after a couple minutes of running the motor burn up and all you could do about it is send me a link saying you don’t recommend this motor and a TRX4 sport but your own RUclips installing it but don’t warranty it after you do it and something happens to the motor not good business!!! Last Holmes Hobbies motor I’ll buy 3rd brushed motor that has did the same thing
@@HolmesHobbies so do you think a trx4 with the two speed and a 9t pinion/45t spur running 3s lipo will be fine? Hard time trying to figure out if I want a trailmaster 550 21t or this crawlmaster 550 8t.
So I have a Tex-4 and I go in the mud and rock crawl pretty much beat the crap out it and I’m on my 2nd motor then keep breaking and stop working what motor do you think I should us for it I don’t want spend a lot but want something better
How are you able to run an 8T motor when this ESC says the motor limit is 21T. The HW1080 and the Carisma ARC2 is a 16T limit so how is this posible to run this Hot of a motor on these ESC`s?
I’m running stock overdrive in my Element Trailwalker but flipped the trans (so I guess it’s overdriven in the rear) and I want a little more speed in the truck since it can’t even keep up with my stock TRX4 Sport. So what motor do you recommend I buy for the Trailwalker? Thanks! Edit: It’s also on a 2s LiPo and will probably run with 1.9” tires often.

Capra is a fun scale rig, but the trx is a lot more solid. If you have a tendancy to bash or tumble down big rocks, the trx will give fewer problems. If you are a careful wheeler, the capra is a lot of fun.

I'm running the devolver with a sw4 on 3s.but I'm fixin to swap out with my comp rig that's got a 12 turn sport with a 1080.the devolver setup in my trx4 goes through batteries to fast for a trail rig.
I've got a reedy 16t. I've been wanting to try one of your motors tough. Any recommendations?
I am getting a TRX4 builders kit. Already have a better steering servo to put in and I want to add a crawlmaster sport 550. Would you suggest 13t or 8t? I will be running a 3s lipo and the stock traxxas esc (for now, will upgrade to a hw 1080) also does the sport crawlmaster come with the leads I need to solder or do I have to get some seperately?
I got one of yours buddy,couple actually,thanks
Do you think the 550 8T motor with stock traxxas ESC on trx4 is ok for 3S lipo? I’m little worried about ESC burn out.
What battery size/ weight were you using? What would you recommend?
12 or 13t will bring the wheelspeed back in line with stock gearing and 27t 550
Out of curiosity, which 550 Crawlmaster Sport would you consider for a 3S powered SCX10II (15T/60T gear setup - can be changed obviously). It's a trail truck, one I'm leaning towards keeping it as performance oriented as possible rather then scale. Was thinking about a 15T motor, but starting to think maybe I should go a little lower. Actually, maybe a 540 might be better given it's a little smaller which might (?) keep the weight down (though I don't want to compromise on power or torque).
personal preference, 12t. enough wheelspeed and not spongy on the throttle.
I am using 3s and have the stock motor. What motor should I get and should I get a lower tooth pinion gear?
Forgive my ignorance: bought a couple of these motors and need to know which terminal is positive and which negative? I see one has a “red” led beside it and the other no. Help please.
Red is positive for normal installs. If it spins backwards just swap polarity
I was wondering what you’d recommend for a SCX10.3. I was planning on the v2 puller pro stubby, but they’re sold out. Your team is amazing and is checking warehouse inventory for me, but if I can’t get one. What route would you suggest? I’m planning on getting a mama x micro esc to go along with whichever motor I go with
I don’t plan on using the 2 speed either. Currently have the stock RTR electronics with overdrive and 11t gear.
,, I'm just waiting for Hobby town.. to get the order in💯,, . They been sold out.. here in Asheville NC.. 🏞
So not looking for high speed but just great trailing and slow speed crawls, what should I go higher or lower than the stock 21t?
Higher turn. 27t trailmaster 550 or 15t crawlmaster 550 (5 slot, slower than normal 15t) would be really smooth and controlled
@@HolmesHobbies thanks for replying even though it’s been awhile since you made this video👍🏼
Do yo have anything that would help a traxxas summit 1/16 crawl better but keep the top end?
i have your 10turn motor with stock esc and the esc died. it got hot.
I have your 21t luv it by the way your a Genius 🚙
My 8T Burnt up gear down on 3s but motor doesn't like 3s at all.
Is better to reverse the wires on the motor or reverse the transmitter? I have the torque master expert 21T. With a futaba T3pv. I told that futaba transmitters need to be reversed. It seems a little quicker this this way or maybe I’m just tripping.
reverse the motor
My stock vxl5hv ESC has recently died on me. I was thinking about going with a hobbywing 1080 esc, this trailmaster motor and the 10t pinion since I run mine on 3s. Seem like a reasonable combo to you?
Certainly is, 1080 is great esc, and pinion is fine if it fits check the chart. Otherwise fine setup
I can out craw a Redcat, so I think I'll stay with the stock setup.
It’s literally $20 for 20% more torque. Plus, saying you can out crawl a redcat isn’t saying much🙄
@@jacobcvpi8279, My point was for how I use my truck, it's great right out of the box. I did add realism pieces to it.
We went Revolver 1800kv stubby
What would you recommend for using 3s on the Trx4? I only have 3s batteries. Gearing and electronics are stock. Thanks brother!!!
The stock motor on 3S is really quite good. I upgraded to the crawlmaster sport 550 12T. Most everyone in my town has done the same. A Little more power and drag break without breaking the bank.
12t crawlmaster 550
Thanks5 brothers!!!!! Time to order put 2 aside for me John
Ooooo I want that for my deadbolt
So I did the exact same setup as you just did after a couple minutes of running the motor burn up and all you could do about it is send me a link saying you don’t recommend this motor and a TRX4 sport but your own RUclips installing it but don’t warranty it after you do it and something happens to the motor not good business!!! Last Holmes Hobbies motor I’ll buy 3rd brushed motor that has did the same thing
can i use 3s lipo? also can the stock esc handle hh 10turn motor
Would this also be a good upgrade for the Trx4 Bronco. Or do you recommend something else since the Bronco is a little heavier.
Geared a little lower it would be fine. Or choose the 10t model.
It's hard to best sport motors for mud. I'd rather ruin 6 $20 motors than one $120 one
All motors will get ruined in mud, even "waterproof" brushless.
Will this motor pull in to a stock scx10 honco?
Will this motor run a 3s Traxxas battery?
What is the best motor for the trx4 sport?
That’s the trx-4 that Luke won at USTE and then gave to you to give to your son!!!
yep
How are you able to run an 8T motor when this ESC says the motor limit is 21T. The HW1080 and the Carisma ARC2 is a 16T limit so how is this posible to run this Hot of a motor on these ESC`s?
It's a 5 slot, so about like a 16t 550 in speed but amp draw more like a 19t 550
@@HolmesHobbies Thank you sir.
What motor set up do you recommend for trx4 bronco with 2 speed and locking diffs, stock motor? Thank you
I should say, which pinion tooth count?
stock pinion is fine. 21t trailmaster sport 550 is a good drop in upgrade with similar wheelspeed, or 10t crawlmaster 550 for smoother starts
You could just gear up a bit, but personally I would put a 10t crawlmaster 550 in
@@HolmesHobbies what pinion will be good on the 10t crawl master for element enduro
can i use 11.1 3s? stock pinion stock spur
why do you have a rubiks cube at the corner of the desk?
I have the stock trx 4 sport and it's still brushed would a 50 turn motor be to strong i want to swap it out but wanted some expert advise
it will be slow and weak. 21t 550 and 27t 540 are the golden zone for power and torque
Thank you for the reply i love the channel buddy awesome content
Would a 3660 sensor less motor 2600kv+60 amp esc would be to much for my trx 4 like to strong for the chassis
What HH motor you recommend on a trx4 blazer with a HW1080 in it?
all of em, lol! literally any of the 550 sport motors. 10t crawlmaster is my personal fav
@@HolmesHobbies thank u... I just got a 13t crawl master at the chinese auction at spirit rc in PA for chuck Herbie at his cancer fund. Thanks for the donations..he was so happy and blessed..
Brushless 2700 puller pro team spec
I want that trucks and your sick ass watch
id like to get a bit of advice off you if i could , i have a TRX4 land rover and an axial scx10 ii, i would like one more but not sure which way to go, im thinking , TRX4 sport or axial capra ??
what are your thoughts on these two cars ?
both rtr versions . im not really interested in building one thanks
Capra is a fun scale rig, but the trx is a lot more solid. If you have a tendancy to bash or tumble down big rocks, the trx will give fewer problems. If you are a careful wheeler, the capra is a lot of fun.

thanks for the reply buddy , you have my SUB
let me guess... your 7yr old son came to you with these requests? "Dad i think i need a 5 slot motor and my ESC settings changed" hahahaha jk. Great video thanks for sharing! This will be my next motor if my stock motor every burns out.
oh yeah, all his idea, lol
Nope. I do not own one. But I like your videos
Great I bought a motor for a kid lol
Wish it was in stock. Kinda sucks to watch a video on a product thats sold out.
Got to be quick like a jackrabbit my brother is RC game is rough my buddy got a 8 turn a week ago and I got a backup 12 turn about 3 days ago and the eight the 10 the 12 and the 13 was all in stock then
we have backstock and try to keep the website filled, but its touugh to keep up right now. Sign up for email updates and you will get notified when they pop up.
Sounds like a plan. I gotta get me a brushless setup soon. What do you recommend for the best wheel speed and smoothest start up thats less than $100 usd?
@@Cannabis_Connoisseur nothing that I've seen LOL when you find out let me know too
I been waiting for 4 months, and I don’t think the email... hahaha but w/e

does this chap ever answer any questions ??
Yes

thanks for the reply pal , i can tell you know your stuff, which makes your reply worth more, i think ill try the capra , its a bit more of a change i suppose , just one last thing if you dont mind , TIRES , i bought boom racing tires but the traxxas canyon tires seem better as the foams in the boom racing ones are too stiff , could you tell me what you think of RC4WD IROK TIRES for rocks and roots or would you recommend any others like proline flat iron , pitbull tires are quite hard to get where i am so theyre out .
thanks for any help
@@gatti493 I know you're asking John but I am going to reply too my favorite tires are proline krawlers with proline dual stage foams 👍 but the Foams all depend on how heavy your rig is I'm running around seven and a half pounds and the dual stage work fine
@@sprather84
i dont think its because my foams are duel stage to be honest mate i think there is just a tad too much foam altogether which makes it a tight fit , i would just dismantle them and cut some foam away but i cocked up when i put the wheels together and had to use a couple of different bolts with phillips heads on them which i just cant get out now lol,
ill have a look at those that you mention, i dont suppose youve had any experience with the IROKS i mentioned ?
lovely tread on them but i dont want to make the same mistake as i did with the boom racing hustlers , they too have a great looking tread.
Great rig for a seven year old........ or this 40 year old 😂
