Hey RC Girl nice job. For your issue on descents it looks like your ESC is still set to trail mode which is only 50% drag brake. This is how it is set when new. If you change it to crawl mode the drag brakes will be set at 100% braking. In crawl mode it will stop on downhills if you let off the throttle. 100% drag brake is 100% braking. It also lets you go directly from forward to reverse without having to double tap the throttle control. Doing this makes a huge difference in crawling performance.

In real life rock crawlers there are "suck down winches" and also "limiting straps". Have RC crawlers ever tried those concepts?
Suck Down Winch: a small ATV style winch mounts to chassis frame rail or crossmember above front axle and beneath or near motor. The winch rope attaches to center of axle housing. When activated on steep incline obsticles, it sucks down and compresses the front end suspension to prevent suspension unloading on incline when nose is feeling light.
Front end "limiting straps" are similar concept but do not compress suspensions, rather just prevents too much front suspension unloading on steep incline.
Would be cool to see on RC crawler, even if just there for appearance of realism.

Like you i was struck that way also . . . this Gal is a trail blazer! I've watched a handful of of previous videos that always displayed knowledge and sincerity, this topic is a bit more complex and she tackled it w the same results. A terrific role model for girls who are drawn to STEM stuff, talking about it doesn't move it forward, moving it forward does. Hey! we're not eye candy pieces of fluff, we're the real deal. Kind of mirrors rock crawling = progress will be an inch at a time and add up, and good for You, her and everybody that your daughter's choices aren't limited. PS it sometimes strikes me w some of the accessories sold for crawlers and military RCs = grown men playing w dolls. All 3 of you have Fun, fix things and learn along w keep making progress in many ways.

Dear RC Girl, I am not a physicist by trade, but I do have a Ph.D. from somewhere in something else. Anyway, Colin Chapman (the racecar driver who founded Lotus) once said something to the effect of "If you add power to a car, you make it faster on the straights. If you reduce weight, you make if faster everywhere." I think that the same principle applies to climb rate and maximum safe descent rate.
At some point, I would like to modify a short-wheelbase TRX4 into super low CG Mars crawler. That plus a trailer so I could tow it using my Defender (which is still awesome after three years.

Go the cheaper route, get some beadlocks and wrap the inner ring with 1/4 oz wheel weights to your desired weight. Costs about $25 for 360 pcs (90 oz). I put 2 layers in the front (6 1/4 oz) and one layer (3 oz) in the rears. You'd be impressed by how well it does compared to spending $300+ for brass and metal axles.

  • @chiccorocker
    @chiccorocker 5 лет назад +1

The TRX-4 definitely needs some weight on the front. The center of gravity, when including a 5000 mah 3S battery and the body with the spare tire, is towards the rear, not in the middle of the car. I've added about 300g (a bit less maybe) to the front. Nothing fancy like your stuff, just glued lead in the bumper and between the chassis beams. This made the center of gravity in the center and it's another planet. Very realistic (the full size defender has the center of mass in the the center between the two axles) and not too bad both in ascending and descending. Of course master of none :).
If I may, I would advise to try removing the big round weights on the front, I think that's a bit too much. However I bet your sidehilling capability is stellar in the current setup.
And about the diffs: you might want to consider stainless steal ball bearings (possibly with ceramic balls), to avoid rust. I'm very lazy and run in a lot of water..... I rusted all of the bearings in about an year :P. Should have done more maintenance :D :D :D.
Great video, keep up the good work!

I seen previous videos of upgrades of metal axles and whilst it improves in certain ways, there are some disadvantages. Seeing that the Defender is a bit top heavy I went for stainless steel driveshafts these are possibly double the weight of original. Not tried out yet, hopefully this might improve the stability. When I get a new R/C the very first thing I do, before I ever take it out for a run, is grease the axles. I use high temperature heavy grease. --- I have an ECX Barrage Gen1 that out of the box would roll over if you sneezed on it. Using what I had on hand I weighted the wheels; I tied five 1/8th oz fishing weights onto each wheel with hemp twine, then secured them in place with a strip of bicycle inner tube. For a total of 5/8ths oz (20 grams) per wheel. It handles like a whole different truck, climbs much better and rarely rolls over now. --- I can't imagine why anyone would "not" put oil in their shocks. R/C's with springs only have such an unrealistic ride bouncing along.

Get the Castle Creation Mamba X Sensored Motor and ESC Combo and you will probably see the biggest difference in performance. The programmability of the ESC is a very useful feature that is needed for setting drag brake and throttle/brake curves . Your rig does definitely look very cool. Keep up the good work!

A lot of weight up front and to you have some bumber chains that all look great but I noticed some push coming down the steps that the no weight had better control and sure it will take a bit of tweaking. So cost and effect is the upgrades worth the cost. I'm a newbie so I like asking questions. And this rig is really cool you have made it look awesome. I just received today my TRX4m so this is especially a great content video. Thankyou so much for sharing and I wish you lived in my neighborhood your a great mechanic 🧰 😀

Nice video about the "heavy metal conversion". As I pointed out on another video on youtube: You don't need to lubricate neither the seat of a ballbearing nor the shaft that is running in it. Lube, oil, grease on the seats of a ballrace is counter productive to its function. You may, for example, cause the shaft running on the surface of the inner bearing shell and wear. I clean ballbearings on their outside before installation. So the ballrace does the work and not the shaft in the bearing shell.
What about the steering angle of the metal parts? Did you notice any difference? For some conversion kits there is the rumour that the steering angle is not as good as with the original parts. And especially the turning radius of the TRX ist a big advantage of this chassis.
BTW I like your way of presenting your rc-toys. Very sympathic. And it's a relief that not only men find their fun in this hobby. Also good to know that "the best woman of them all" (yes, sorry, I mean mine) is not alone with her interest in rc's.

You're awesome, thanks, the only thing I missed was the cost of everything, I don't have one yet, very tempting, yet personally I like the new tactical unit, it's a tiny bit cheaper, & these days saving what I can helps, most my Axial builds have at least an alloy front axle & alloy wheels to keep the weight low but thanks I go look them up as far as $ cost

Ps, loved the new installations, really cool looking. Might have to get them. Isn't the Trx4 Landy just great!! Cheers, thank you again.

Great video and well done. Really think that a little lighter front portal hub will fix your descent and level the rig out just a tad. All in all cant wait to see the up date on the shocks.

It’s so so awesome to see a woman in this hobby. There are far too few of you. I’ve been tried to get my wife into the hobby for years but gave up. She still calls all my rigs “toys”. 🤦‍♂️

I did FULL brass on my Defender. I left my Bronco factory, no brass. I can't tell the difference? Except I spent a ton on upgraded parts for the Defender. I do believe the weight of the Defender body is countered by the brass. My stock Bronco can go over hard obstacles the heavily modified Defender can't! I like the Defender for the look.

Yep agreed. If you want to run the Defender body, it needs some counterweight down low.

Hi RCgirl great video here. I noticed you did mention the individual weight of each part you swapped but I was just asking what is the total combined weight difference between out of box and with the extra brass and aluminium parts? I was really close to buying a Landrover defender in red from Traxxas because it looks beautiful and I am getting impatient waiting on my high lift ford F150 , but I will stick it out and continue waiting. Only 2 weeks away now for a metallic brown F150. I really like the Landrover but there seems to be a lot of criticism regarding the weight of the Body shell and how the Landrover rolls over onto its roof real easy due to high centre of gravity. So I was just curious how much is the total weight difference from out of box to fitted with these optional parts? Looks like the extra weight does help in keeping the rubber side down and keeps the truck more planted too. Great work and excellent tutorial video here too.love your work Rcgirl.👍
